How come everything in the dev section, is just ports besides cm7? I used to have a vibrant and they had like hella shiznit, just wondering if there's anything about the phone making it hard

Sense being closed source. That's why. Everything is AOSP or sense based

I'm pretty sure Ice Glacier isn't a port - i.e. it's a ROM meant specifically for our device.

i believe IG is a port of expresso which is the sense that comes on the mytouches
I understood software porting to be, taking an application/OS that was designed to run on one set of hardware/platform and making it run on one it wasn't intended to run on/within.
As far as I've seen, Ice Glacier is the MyTouch 4G stock ROM. Teamsilence and Notxel deodexed it, zip-aligned it, removed some of the stupid bloatware, etc. They didn't take a ROM from another device and port it to ours, they just tidied our ROM up and made it better...much better.
It's essentially similar to using nLite to trim down/adjust a Windows OS installation and then repackaging it.
I could be wrong...

What's the difference between CM7 rom and Virtuous rom???
Because I'm thing about updating from virtuous to cm7
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
One big difference is that CM doesn't have HTC Sense, but Virtuous does.
Also, CM is based on 2.3, whereas Virtuous is 2.2.1

Best thing to do is flash and see for youself! Look at the specs of the roms and flash! That's what I do.

I agree. I was doing the same thing as you trying to find the difference between two different ROMs and I found that it was just easier to flash and try them yourself. Plus it was fun flashing different ROMs
I really like Roto CM7 rom So far out of all of all the roms I have tryed and it seems more stable as well as fast. but I am flashing B#54 because it has the tethering in it. seems he has taken it out after that and since I do not have Internet at home anymore... Moved and have not gotten it.... I tether...
Hey,
Well Virtuous is based on the stock rom (therefore it comes with sense). On the other hand is CM which is build on top of vanilla android (therefore it can use 2.3).
If you like the look and feel and the bundled apps of the desire z with stock rom, you will love Virtuous because its just an extension.
If you think the stock one is overloaded and you like the vanilla android experience, CM is the way to go.
In both cases you get a custom kernel with a lot of nice features.
I use CM on my G1 and Virtuous on my G2. And I like both! well more the G2 but that has nothing to do with the rom

First shout-out to thederekjay for posting a kick-ass MIUI rom with the help of faux123 and many others.
Newbie Question:
I just have one question is there anyway to combine some sense animations with a non-sense rom...i.e. today i've flashed virtuous_fusion glacier rom i like some aspects of it such as the animated lockscreens. is there a way to use that on a non-sense rom.
No, due to the fact that sense is closed source so it's impossible to port anything to a different rom.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App
Only the sense music player was ported months ago and nothing else, htc doesn't share their source code like aosp like the poster said above. You can make Vanilla look like sense if you want, I'm on soap and it looks like mysense/touchwiz mix.

will mt4g get sense 3.0?
No, the mytouch uses T-Mobile's version of sense but you can flash a sense 3.0 rom.
Sent from my HTC Glacier
Nope. The MT4G slide will, and you can flash the Sense 3.0 for MT4G slide leak if you'd like T-Mobile styled Sense 3.0.
Where can I get it and how
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
Also do I need to root a specific way?

I'm not trying to be mean but you should really read up before rooting. But since you asked perm root is when the radio security is S-OFF and clockwork recovery is the replacement of the stock recovery image which allows you to flash custom roms and kernels etc.

no problem at all.
So i when I root how do I s-off
also how do I get the clockwork
Read this thread and just google you're questions. That's how I learned the first time. Realistically, you shouldn't even try it if you don't understand it...

It probably won't. I'd even be surprised if we ever get any more updates after we get the official 2.3.4 mySense.
Either way, Sense 3 is nice but sooooo bloated. Even on the Sensation it's just not smooth like it should be.

It's a shame since it has nice specs too, but Sammy and MIUI are custom UI's that run smoothly...Why is HTC not optimizing sense, it has always been sluggish, sense alone shouldn't need more than 1GHZ 2X cores.

Yeah seriously. Sammy's TW4 is so damn nice. Not very intrusive and they really refined the look. I'm an HTC fanboy like no other buy the SGS2 with TW4 is my clear cut top dog, probably until the N3 comes out. The Sensation is nice but disappointing that HTC's quality control on it is still god awful. And it doesn't help that Sense 3.0 is now even fatter and slower. Something needs to be done with Sense, either they do a complete overhaul or at least open source it so that devs can optimize all that bloat... I really want to love Sense again, so it makes me sad.
Anyone got any ideas for roms? Not ics.
Anything specific? I'm going to make one, but I need ideas

Sense 3.5
Bliss base
Runny nav bar
No bloat
Runs perfect without swap
Or maybe u wanna port Android evolution or Runnymede desire rom by sebastian15? The latter is a great rom
Yeah, the DZ community has a love/hate relationship with 3.5 sense rom, so a one running smoothly without swap, no bloat, nicely themed (easy on the eyes ), is a way to go.
There are alot of sense 3.5 roms for the DZ. I've tried them all (literally), so far the Bliss sense and the NRG 3.5 sense roms are good, other I had trouble with (laggy, slow, crashes...).
MIUI, seen one seen them all, although popular you will be just one in a bucket of full pretty good and functional MIUI roms.
Stock g2 or AOSP also, there are alot of them for the DZ, there has to be yet an AOSP that can beat the awesome CM 7 rom.
If you make it really try hard to stand out, cause it will be burred soon under the mentioned ones.
You could try porting a weird obscure ROM that nobody has really seen much of. I remember using a ROM by SiulMagic called LiquidM_Villain, its basically an Acer modified version of Froyo. I used it for a few weeks before leaving because I missed Gingerbread, but it was quite a neat ROM. Theres a Gingerbread version around now that could be ported? Or maybe theres another modified version of Android that nobody really sees much of?

Lol or he could build cm7 for the acer liquid metal my wife has it, nice device but seriously lacking in the rom department. Taz if your interested fire me a pm, I have some background on the liquid and could help out you'd be a god on the liquid metal modaco forum
As for the g2 there isn't anything I can think of...we pretty much have everything except full ICS.
Taz I'm serious about the acer tho...pm me!

What specs does the acer have?
Also, will hopefully try my hand at that desire rom. Doesn't look too easy because of desire-specific things, but will try

Lots of similarities with the DZ taz, same cpu, ill have to check again. But they've been trying to port cm7 from the DZ to the liquid MT, they almost have it but I think you could blow it out of the water.

Honeycomb?
I noticed the HC SDK 3.0 uses the GB launcher so...
Some other folks built and compiled HC for their phones too, off the SDK I believe.

Honeycomb is a bad idea when we have ICS being ported at the moment (which if you check the dev page, there's a thread with an almost complete port) since honeycomb was designed purely for tablets and is not meant for phones. A LOT of quite possibly pointless work would have to go in it.
take any existing ROM - figure out how to make it have even better reception in weak signal areas - and you will be a STAR on XDA!!
and start with the ROM that is the fastest, leanest, and has the best battery life and most free RAM of any ROM.........yes I am talking about G-Lite 2.0.1
My idea is the latest stock rom with nice tweaks and addons but that's just an idea... And maybe nobody likes it

The ICS rom on Desire Z is out ? or it's still the alpha version ?
How hard would it be to port a Sense ROM to the Nexus 4? Back when I was on my Droid Incredible, I saw a video explaining porting one phone's ROM to another phone, as long as they were on the same version of Android (mind you, this was back in Gingerbread era). Is it still as simple as replacing some files with others in Jelly Bean?
Its hard. There are tons of people that have been working on it for a while, and I don't think they have even got it to the boot animation yet.

what about writing compatible drivers from scratch? the difference is that you are not talking about porting pure open source android, you are talking about porting something thats proprietary, and not made for a non htc phone.

lol, thats what i meant
Its hard alright, like MIUI too, (though different case as MIUI have a team similar to CM making ROM's for all major devices).
Sense itself is a highly modified SHELL, yes we use the word shell. AOSP itself doesn't have a shell therefore the AOSP purity.
Therefore if a Sense ROM is made, it might not be able to use any kernel except the one its developed with. Since Shell and Kernel is tightly bonded.
Hopefully my explanation is right, I just studied these out of my course and merged it with my knowledge in xda. Do correct me if I'm wrong.
