Hey,
I'm the first employee in the mobile team at my work and they've asked me to provide a list of hardware for dev/testing purposes that I will need.
This got me really excited and I put together a little list; I was wondering if you guys could check it out and let me know if you think I've missed anything. The thing I've got to consider is that I'm going to need a wide range of popular handsets that I can test our apps out on, including laptops and tablets I'm interested to know what you guys would consider to be the essential handsets out there currently and coming up.
Currently I have:
Nexus one
HTC Desire, Hero, Dream, Incredible, Legend, Evo 4G
Samsung Galaxy S
Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, Xperia X10 Mini
Dell Streak
Motorola Droid, Droid X
Have I got all the essential hardware? What else would you be tempted to include and why?
Thank you.
I think your covered with the dell streak, but the Archos runs android. And the ICD gemini and/or NotionInk ADAM will hopefully be out by the end of the year, so i owuld get those as well. Im really jealous that you can just have all those devices lol.
Oh...good call on the Archos! I'll stick that down along with the ICD and damn, if the vids are anything to go by the NotionInk Adam looks amazing!
I'm sure I'm not going to get everything that I ask for, but to say I am pretty excited is an understatement.
OK, I've added these to the list:
ICD Vega, Gemini
NotionInk ADAM
entourage eDGe
Spring Design Alex
Acer Inc Aspire One D250
So does this cover most popular phones, tablets and other devices, do you think?
Just saying that the Archos can't see protected apps in the market place
I'm jealous of your list
I Envy You!
You might consider an HTC Vogue . Not only because they're cheap but the dev community for those devices is superb.
HTC just announced a little over an hour ago that it will no longer lock any of the bootloaders on their devices.
Link to FB post: http://www.facebook.com/HTC/posts/10150307320018084
Here is the site where Sony Ericsson users can unlock their phones:
http://unlockbootloader.sonyericsson.com/
This is a quote from Motorola in regards to the locked bootloder:
"We completely understand the operator requirement for security to the end user, and as well, want to support the developer communities desire to use these products as a development platform. It is our intention to enable the unlockable/relockable bootloader currently found on Motorola XOOM across our portfolio of devices starting in late 2011, where carriers and operators will allow it."

Shouldn't Motorola follow the current trend and open their systems?
What do you guys think of HTC and Sony Ericsson's actions?
Well, we love them! Mototola is a terribly frustrating company. Good riddance.
If only there were good HTC phones in att when I bought this phone (still love it)
Sent from the bowels of hell...
This proves that Motorola was using carriers as a scapegoat. Deceptive and cowardly!!
I love the Atrix but I'm feverishly looking for the quickest way to get an HTC Sensation (willing to switch back to old provider if need be!). I'll gladly sell my Atrix to anyone here. The only way I want to stay is if we get an unlocked bootloader or HDMI mirroring for landscape mode.
I hope Motorola comments on this. I should subtly troll their Twitter.
Framing sweet, my aria is a nice little phone

Forget the Sensation man, it's Holiday time!
http://www.pcworld.com/article/228445/htc_holiday_specs_outed.html
Above link said:
The rumored specifications come courtesy of a ROM discovered by 911Sniper, a prominent source for HTC-related leaks. The exposed details point towards the device having a lot in common with the HTC Sensation. The Holiday will apparently have a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, 1GB of memory, and a slightly excessive 4.5-inch, 540 by 960 resolution screen.
The ROM leak also pointed towards the smartphone running Android version 2.3.4 (Gingerbread), and having both an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front camera.
Further details regarding the phone, such as price points, are currently low on the ground, but some sites are suggesting that the HTC Holiday could be part of AT&T's promised range of late-2011 4G LTE smartphones.

Damn, I'll have to keep an eye out. I think I'll draw the line at 4.3", but the nice thing is that I'm sure it's ROM will be ported to the Sensation or Evo 3D.
Looking towards getting another HTC device again. I really wished the Atrix could get Gingerbreak to make sure of the Tegra 2, or that we'd have an unlocked bootloader for now. I was more satisfied with my Desire Z regretfully.. c'mon, Motorola!!!
It seems that Cyanogenmod will not be bringing their next generation (ICS) to the Vibrant. While I really like the Vibrant, perhaps it is time to think about moving on.
Are there any recommendations for where I should be looking. Here would be my considerations:
- I like the hardware features (screen size and resolution and 16GB memory)
- I want the phone to have full Cyanogenmod support
- Cyanogenmod support should include a good gps and battery life (both of which are shortcomings for the Vibrant)
- I need to stick with TMobile
- And, I don't want the phone to cost an arm and a leg
Any thoughts, ideas, advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Nexus. Nothing else needs to be said. But if it does not come to to tmobile, I would lean towards HTC, they seem to be able to at least update phones.

I agree. Nexus should be #1 on your list if you want support and like the Vibrant. The HTC Amaze just came out on T-Mobile and has impressive hardware specs and is on the list from HTC to get the ICS update. It also has a 8MP camera with instant picture taking like the Nexus. I would imagine that Cyanogenmod will put out a mod for it. Though any new phones will need some time to see if CM will support it.
The Galaxy Nexus is a pentaband phone, so even if T-Mobile doesn't get it, it'll still run on their network. I normally tell people to get the phone that they like the best. Not everyone is an uber android geek. I told a buddy of mine to get the Droid Charge, he loves the thing. If he waited for the Galaxy Nexus, he'd be disappointed. It's personal preference.
It sounds like you like to tinker. People that like to tinker need a Nexus device because they'll always be the ones with the most support and the smoothest Android experience. I love my Vibrant, it was my first Android device. I'll probably always hold onto it as a backup phone with Stock Froyo + WiFi Calling, but in the future I'll most likely stick to Nexus devices.
Decide what you care about the most and less about hardware/appearance. If you want a custom experience more than what a manufacturer's android experience is, then go for a Nexus with optimized hardware. There are a lot of really nice, very cool phones out there but in terms of longevity of future up to date use, Nexus wins 10 times out of 10.
Also, I wouldn't buy a device based on the promise of updates. Carriers may intend to update a device, but several things can hinder that intention. In all reality, if an upgrade to ICS doesn't come until next August, well, what's the point? Remember, for a long time it looked like Samsung assumed that T-Mobile would want the Vibrant updated, and it didn't happen. There have several devices through the years that were suppose to be updated and never were. Always buy a phone for what it is, not what a carrier says it should be.
Regarding Galaxy Nexus being penta band, doesn't it mean only GSM is supported in 5 bands and not 3G? Why would Samsung build AWS band in a world phone for couple of carriers.
tmobil sgs2
What do you think of the T-Mobile sgs2? Will it get ice or will it end up being forgotten like the vibrant? Seems to me the T-Mobile sgs2 is more powerful than the nexus hardware wise
Sent from my T959 using xda premium
Higher specs are irrelevant. I'm sure it needs them to push TouchWiz. There is one device ICS is optimized for, and that's the Galaxy Nexus.
1) It's not Samsung that will abandon the SGS, it's T-Mobile
2) If you chase spec sheets you'll be replacing devices every 3-6 months.
Also, manufacturers are going to want to want their frameworks on top of ICS. There's no reference point for how ICS will look or run with TouchWiz, Sense or Motoblur on top of it. You have to go with what you know, not what you think you can assume.

Your advice is based on a "think" without any leak information of a virtual phone
nexus or tmobil sgs2! stay away from amaze
iPhone 5 will be my next device. too tempted by androids openness to play around with all the roms out there. iPhone will take that choice away and simplify things. also would play nicer with my Mac. my MacBook hates the vibrant it seems.

If I was upgrading now, and couldn't wait until later this year, I would pick the Nexus, simply because of the development opportunities. Razor is sweet, I like the HTC Rezound too, but the Nexus was built for rooting and Romming, etc. And I am a fan of Samsung phones...later this year, when I am eligible for my upgrade, I'm hoping the GSIII will be an option as well. The GSII is my favorite device on the market right now.

My wife picked up a Razr Maxx a week ago. Actually I think it's a nice unit. Some of the V-bloat, like games can be uninstalled (she's not a big Madden 12 fan. LOL). The Verizon stuff can be "hidden" from appearing in the app drawer.
Motocast seems to be a nice feature, with the Moto program on our desktop she can access shared folders on the PC with her phone over wi-fi or 3G/4G from anywhere.
Smart Actions is similar to a Tasker app but with a graphical UI. You have Triggers and Actions. Very easy to use. We set up one so that when she leaves work to drive home, any incoming phone call or text message, Voice anounces the callers name and sends an Auto reply txt message that says, "I'm driving right now. I'll get back to you ASAP".
The battery is a monster. She fiddled with the phone all day Sat and still had 60% that night. We only have 3G service right now where we live but when battery sucking 4G is available I'm sure the extra mAh will come in very handy, especially as the phone ages.

well discontinued support is misleading in a way...source code will still be pushed and available for developers
basically they are just not "officially" calling it a supported phone because of the proprietary files for the radio/lte that they do not have the rights too (google that is) and because of that they feel they cannot truly support it
but the status quo in regards to source roms and the like wont change

Might wanna do your research. They said that for ALL CDMA bases Nexus devices, the nexus one, the nexus s 4G, the LTE Galaxy Nexus and the LTE Motorola Xoom.
The only thing they aren't supporting is end users building AOSP for it. Google themselves will still be releasing official updates.

Whether or not Ubuntu Edge will get the green light or not (read Joey's great 5 Reasons Why You Should Stop What You’re Doing & Pledge to #UbuntuEdge), everybody's hard at work making Ubuntu Touch, the beautiful mobile OS, happen.
Two weeks ago we had our first Ubuntu Touch Porting Clinic and it went quite well. We found and fixed a number of issues in our tools, our porting guide and many porters turned up to ask their questions and update the images.
There's also still Michael Hall's offer to win an OPPO Find 5. If you are interested in winning it, or work on an existing port, create a new one and generally get Ubuntu Touch on devices out there, show up, talk to the Ubuntu Touch engineers, find out what's happening and how to get involved.
It's all happening

When is the radio going to be activated on non nexus devices? Especially samsung.
No they dont "just work" and im sure by now you guys know.
Whats d point of the beautiful mobile os if i cant call or browse.?
Less than 2 months to go this should be priority........ not everyone can get a nexus.
If at launch the media is yapping about how they cant even make calls on their test device this project becomes a lame duck......
Its weird how nobody seems to be bothered about this. Except of course its a deliberate thing to prevent mass use before v 1.0

Bad luck!
Don't be too harsh. We should be gratefull for what Canonical is already giving (for free!) even if it's only on a few devices for now. The main focus is and should remain the OS itself, there's no space to support a countless number of hardware. That should be left to the community.
There is also no reason to support every android hardware because they are going to have their 'own' devices.

I have no issue with it being exclusive to nexus devices as they are affordable and highly accessible without contract. However I have to agree on some points considering I have a nexus device in my hand with no native support. Verizon Galaxy Nexus. If you are going to commit to targeting Nexus audiences then at least follow through with that. Meanwhile I will be attempting to make a port myself so I understand how difficult radio's can be but I digress.
Not aware of the American network ecosystem so I can't argue with that. Indeed it does sound unfortunate.

Some of us stay in places where buying a nexus is very difficult and even makes no sense.
in my country a nexus 4 retails for about 500 dollars!!
Secondly, there are no Ubuntu Devices until next year. Are u telling me v1.0 is designed to be used by only the nexus users? smh.
anyway if you know any port that has functional radios pls share....... as far as i know, none.
apparently we are developing a mobile OS we cannot use on a mobile phone... at least till we are able to buy a ubuntu phone..... which no one has committed to making yet.

They are targeting true Nexus phones directly from Google and not the carrier branded versions. The reason why you won't see a official image or a completely functional community built image for the Verizon/Sprint Galaxy Nexus is because the radio which is CDMA/LTE is proprietary to the carrier and so its harder to patch a RIL to work with those phones opposed to the standard RIL for GSM based phones.
If you want a functional Ubuntu Touch phone on Verizon, you will have to wait until a OEM makes one for Verizon. If not, you will probably have to switch to AT&T or T-Mobile to get a community/official built image for a phone.
