[Q] Toggle switches by long pressing Home button? - Wildfire General

Hello all,
I'm looking for an application which will allow me to toggle my Wifi, Bluetooth, GPS, Mobile Internet, Hotspot, Auto Rotate without leaving any application. Because sometimes when you go into some application and needs to turn on Mobile Internet because wifi is not working, then you'll have to come to home screen to turn off wifi and then turn on mobile internet, instead of that, what if there was an application which will do as follows.
Long press home button, instead of displaying recent apps which I'm sure is of no use, it will display toggle switches from which you can turn on or off bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, Hotspot etc.
It will also allow option after press to select Toggle or Recent Apps. Optionally user will be able to set the desired behavior on long press of home button in the settings if he wants to directly open the toggle or recent apps or choose at runtime.
There are some applications which allows you to do this using search button, but most of the applications already use search button for in within application search, whereas they don't use home button for anything and long pressing home button won't interfere without any action in actual application.
Thanks for listening and I'd love if someone can find the application if already developed. If not, I just gave the idea for development of new tool.

Not sure if it's an option to you, but you can run cm7 nighties. In there you have the option to define any application to run after long pressing the home or search key

Since you cant get the CM7 Nightlies, you can get some of the many applications that are listed in the Android Market which puts the toggle switches along with the notification bar. As I had specified in some other thread, here is a short list, just lifted from there:
* Extended Controls
* Bartender
* Bar Control
* Power Control Plus
* Widgetsoid
* Quickdesk
Hope they do work out for you.
Good Luck

Perfect. long press home button to start the popup of notification is sweet. That's exactly what I'm looking for. But as my wildfire came with 2.2.1, no root and no custom roms.

Have a look at above screen, I'm looking for something which will start the above screen. MySettings and Quick Settings does the job, but they won't start from some applications like Opera where even long pressing Search key brings the search bar.
So is there any way to add applications to home screen long press action. Why are they all insisting on using Search key long press instead of home key long press?
Does any of above applications provide the home screen long press initiation? Thank you.

Did you try any of the applications I listed? They are placed along with the notification bar, something like this:
So, with that, although the disadvantage is that you cannot get so many settings on that as posted in your screen shot, the advantage is they are universally available everywhere, and, does not require any button presses. I would assume that the Search Key is the most preferred one for app developers, since, it is the "least" used key among the 4, simply because, even without the search key, almost all apps and even the home screens, have their own search functions and widgets.

The problem is, most of the applications including Opera hides the notification bar and there's no way to access those settings in Opera or the applications which hides the notification bar. Search key is least used, agreed. But the home key long press is something no application will ever use as it's a key which will let you exit the application. On the other hand, search key long press is used in Opera, Market and some other applications that I can't recollect at this point of time.
The problem with above applications list is, all of them are aiming at displaying toggles either on home screen or through notification bar, but none of them give us ability to choose the custom keys. I appreciate your help mate, but I'm looking for more specific thing.
Also I'd like to know from some developer if it's possible to assign custom application to home key long press without rooting? If not, may be that is the reason no one has come up with home key long press instead of search key long press.

Launchkey lets you assign a custom app but only for long pressing search button.

There are apps in the market that do this - but, they are only Task Manager Apps. More advanced versions of the default Android Task Switcher.
But, that's an idea as well. Many task switchers allow you to "stick" app shortcuts there. So, simply install one of the task switchers, add the shortcut to Quick Settings there, and, you should be able to use it without exiting Opera Mini / other apps.
This is probably an extremely long and tiring method, but nothing else comes to my mind.

Indeed, I don't know why everyone is sticking to long press of search key instead of long press of Home key, which I think is available on all android handsets, unlike search key on samsung galaxy phones.

Thanks for keeping up with me. I have tried the task switcher applications as you said, but I couldn't find an app which will be activated on long press of home key. Most of them again uses the search key or notification bar. Now I don't know if there are certain set of rules, but Android applications don't have coherent UI interface as compared to iOS. And that is the reason, I think Opera is in fault or we're expecting too much from our Mobile?

The long press button functions are "hard-coded" into the ROM, and Search is mapped to "Custom-Shortcut" or something like that; simply put, app developers can ONLY use long press Search. On CyanogenMod it's a different story, because they added additional code to open up the other buttons.

Well, browsing the market, I found this app switcher which claims it works with the Home Key. Couldn't test it though, since it's a paid one:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.magouyaware.appswipe2
Even this one claims to do the same thing: (Again paid though)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.magouyaware.quicklaunch
And one more, which seems exactly like what you are looking for:
https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.intuitit.android.p.powerstrip
Will keep looking for any free solutions and let you know.
EDIT: One Free Solution:
https://market.android.com/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android
But, here's the catch. "Officially", it is not compatible with the Wildfire. So, you will have to look elsewhere for the APK and sideload it on your Wildfire,
Hope it works out.
Good Luck

Probably works with a listener service constantly running in the background or something; point is, it will always be better done in CyanogenMod, at system level

OMG, that did the trick. Thanks a million. Used the Quick Launch to start the MySettings app and it's perfect. It allows us to use home key, not a long press though as explained by NickHu. But it allows us to quick press it 2 times and set the maximum delay for which the action will be effective. Like if you set it to 500ms, after pressing Home button, it will wait for 500ms for you to press home button one more time. If you press home button in those 500ms, your specified application will open. If you don't do anything in those 500ms, it will perform the default home button behavior.
@NickHi, Perfect and always, it will be better at system level rather than at application level. But when I bought this Wildfire, I was on 2.2.1. So can't root, won't be able to install CyanogenMod or any other custom ROMs. So the above setting is working pretty good for me.
I'd like to know one more thing. How to get that notification setting which in turn is the best way to toggle in applications which shows you notification bar.
Kindly link me to the application which will add the panel in notification window.

* Quickdesk: https://market.android.com/details?id=sg.ruqqq.quickdesk and https://market.android.com/details?id=sg.ruqqq.quickdeskpro
All of these add the toggles to the notification bar, as it is in my screenshot.

Thanks a lot. Everything is perfect now. The software is widgetsoid. Thanks a lot everyone who has helped me.

Advice for widgetsoid (in case you don't know yet)
If you want to have the widget ONLY in the notification bar choose the 5x1 type widget, after configuring the wanted widget uncheck the "open popup" in notification tab in widgetsoid (this so that the widget doesn't popup after the selection in the notification bar).
Also if you want something more simple search the market for status bar settings.

Cheers.

LOL yeah. Figured it out eventually. I was clicking on the toggles and every single time, there was this popup. Then did some trial and error, and got rid of it successfully. SettingsBar looks good, but will switch to it when few more toggles support comes i.e. Orientation toggle which is a must when reading something while sleeping, annoying little android keeps them switching in weird orientation making it impossible to read, thanks to lock orientation on Widgetsoid.
And It gave me some warning after I tried to made the 5x1 widget that "OMG ITS ONLY FOR BIGGER SCREENS AND BLABLA" So made the 4x1 widget, but I guess that doesn't make any difference at all, I have 8 toggles on it anyways.

[Qeustion] Notification Bar Functionality

Question for the Devs,
I have one thing that bugs me about Android: taking a ton of steps to get to places, so I had an idea, but I'm not sure if it's possible. It's a two - parter:
1) Is it possible, to put into the notification area a scrollable list of your currently running applications, or possible your most used apps? Kinda like holding down home, but it's not the same.
2) I had a program on my jailbroken iCrap back in the day: sbsettings. LOVED this program, gave me quick access to just about anything. It's kinda like the power widget, but it was accessible from sliding your finger accross the top of the screen from anywhere. Imagine having the power control widget in your notification area.
Are the two above possible, or are there limitations to what the notification bar can do. Obviously, I'd want it so that if I hit "clear" they'd still remain there. Also, I don't want just a link poining me somewhere else, I want the action to occur right from the notification screen:
I searched and searched but cannot find. Have I missed something?
Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, but I figured it does have to do with development, so there ya go... Thanks in advance!
For #2 use smartbar with quick settings checked in settings for notification. It might also have #1 but I don't really poke too much around in the settings.
I use Quick Settings, which will put a notification in the pull down task bar and you have access to a number of system settings.
jkAppSwitchEX works great as a sort of AltTab type thing and you can pin it to a long press of the search button. It also can be used as a task killer and can have a list of your favorite/most used apps for easy launch (and has a recent apps list). Plus, it can put a notification in the pull down task bar. There's also a free version on the market which just shows running apps.
I also believe Folder Organizer will put apps in the task bar, I have the lite version which doesn't do that (I don't think), but I don't really need it for that, so the lite version is fine for my needs.
I've also tried SmartBar, and it does have that functionality of swiping the screen and having access to programs, etc. But it wasn't what I had been looking for when I tested it, but worth checking out.
*off topic a bit*
Sorry but it's not Qeustion it is Question
Has anyone found a way to add the power control toggles to the notification screen as seen on the Galaxy S?
if your rooted cyanogen mod have the settings in the notification like the galaxy s or you can use a app call quickdesk you can launch quickdesk by long pressing the search button or double tap the home button in any program it has this thing call quick pannel that shows you your recently used apps and the apps thats running its really slick you can also swype up on any running apps to close them. theres also another app call itchingthumb that basically do the same thing but i like the simplicity of quickdesk more you should check them out. Theres also another app call smart task bar that can also do those thing it as the most options all you have to do is swype your finger at the side of your phone to launch it. Feel free to ask me any questions about them and I'll try to answer them. Oh yeah theres another one call power strip.
I found this thread and applied the mod to the HD ROM that I'm using, it works well.

10 Awesome Tips&Tricks

1. Using the Windows Phone 7 voice controls
Press and hold the Windows key at the bottom of your screen and you can start talking to your phone. Try saying "Open Calendar", to see what we mean.
2. Adding apps to the Start screen
When you are in the long applications list on your phone pressing on an icon and holding brings up a contextual menu that gives you a series of options, one of which is "pin to start". Press on this option and the app will be shown on the Start screen.
3. Add people to the start page
No it's not just about adding apps to the start page, but people too. Find them in your contacts book, click on the "pin" icon, and they'll be added to your Start page so you can speed dial them whenever you need.
4. Moving your tiles around
Adding a new app or tile to the Start screen will place it right at the bottom. If you want it to be elsewhere, press and hold on the tile in question and then you are free to move it up and down and rearrange your tiles to best suit your needs.
5. Removing apps from the Start screen
You like the app, but you don't really want it on your Start screen anymore. No worries. Hold your finger on the tile in question for a couple of seconds and when it highlights press the no pin icon in the top right-hand corner.
6. Uninstalling apps
You've tried it and you don't like it. No problem. Head over to the menu list and press down on the app in question until you get the contextual menu. Select uninstall and you're done.
7. Rating and reviewing apps
You really love the new app you've downloaded, so much so that you want to rate and review it so anyone else interested knows whether it's any good or not. With Windows Phone 7 you don't have to wait until you delete it to rate it, you can rate and review it at any time. Press and hold down on the app in question until that contextual menu appears and then choose "Rate and review". It will bring up another page allowing you to have your say and give it a rating out of five. Easy peasy.
8. How to change the theme
If you've got your Windows Phone 7 phone from Vodafone the theme is going to be all red, O2 is dishing out blue themes and Orange, orange ones. An all red themed phone might be a bit much (we hear you), but fret not as you can change the colour of the tiles and other features in the Setting area. Zip on over to the menu list, select Settings, and then Theme. Here you can choose the colour of the background and the accent colour. Background options are "Black" or "White" while you'll get nine accent colours to pick from. Lime, anyone?
9. Swipe to the left
Windows Phone 7 is built around the idea of panoramic tiles that you swipe to reveal more content off screen. It's always worth seeing if you can swipe to the left as there might be more stuff waiting to be revealed.
10. What are the dots?
Whenever you see three dots at the bottom of the screen, that's a menu for more options. In photo playback for example, it will give you the options to delete the image or perform a quick upload.

Simply send yourself an email with the image attached, then open the email on your phone and save the image. When you view the image, you have an option of setting it as your wallpaper(The Zune software only seems to sync JPEG’s)
Click on the PNG attachment and then wait a few moments. Once the ‘cancel’ button next the attachment disappears, click again. This should open it in the picture viewer with the option to set as wallpaper.
Until the lock screen has started any animation, the home screen will appear black. Presumably this is because the home screen isn’t loaded until the lock screen has been touched, which makes sense. Secondly, it doesn’t work if you have a password on the lock screen. Having a password is obviously a good idea, so it’s a shame this doesn’t work with the password.

Its a great way to quickly press and toggle on/off your radios, BUT what i think would be FANTASTIC is that a long press or a hold on that same icon (so you're not wasting any more space)... Will launch the settings for that button.
Example, long press on:
1. Wi-Fi - takes you to WiFi setting
2. Bluetooth - takes you to Bluetooth settings
3. GPS - Maybe have this launch an application,
(i prefer GPS-Status, but I could see others wanting Google Maps)
4. Silent/Vibration - (see notes below)
or have it take you to settings/Sound/volume popup
or /setting/sound/vibrate popup
5. 4G - (see notes below)
or have it take you to Wireless/network settings
I understand cyanogenmod has a feature that allows you to select which widgets to display in this area. Great feature, because who really uses the silent button up top, that's what the volume rocker is for... And im sure 60-80% of us are not in a 4g area so that's a waste too.
I see no need for the Silent/Vibration in the pull down, we have a hardware rocker that does the same thing. So i say replace it with Brightness Auto on/off (with a long press going to settings/display)
Optional (i would like some feedback)
For most of us not is a 4g I would like 1 of three things
1. I love the tiny flashlight app/widget so it would be nice to pull down and turn flash light on/off https://market.android.com/details?id=com.devuni.flashlight (long press opening app?!?)
2. Open Phone, (log press open contacts)
3. DroCap (so you can take a screen shot.)
4. IDK what do you think????
So 1st off from a development point is this possible, The log press to other action and changing default action of slient/4G?!?!
And what do you thing about this request?!?!?

That is a huge request lol. Not impossible but some major framework editing required. I don't have the time right this second but I'll look at trying to get one button to work just to see how hard it is

Even 3g toggl in place of 4g toggle would be a huge help to me =D i know it's not so hard to press the power key, but (half?) of the US doesn't have 4g lol
Lol, I guess it is a big request, I'm not a developer so I wasn't thinking what would be involved.
I was just throughing it out there.
...But I was pretty sure that if it could be done, it would be incorporated into most of the Roms here.

Not exactly we can attempt to rewrite ours but we have tw framework-res.apk controlling our status bar buttons and it don't like to be altered at all and I wonder if any of this had to be changed before the os was built by the compiler but most likely not on that

As someone who travels quite a bit, I can tell you that the vast majority of the country does not have 4g. Population-wise, 4g is near a lot of people (major cities/large population), but geographically it is almost non-existant.
As for the idea in this thread, if someone could get this to work it would open up a whole mess of new possibilities. I'd imagine if you could make the toggles open up the settings, you could also make them do a whole slew of other things, and maybe even replace the dock entirely for those of us who prefer things minimalistic. Not holding out any hope, but it would be really really cool.

Simply put, I would love to see a developer to take advantage of this real-estate and put this area to use.

Swipepad does pretty much what you are asking, only in a slightly different way. It's even a little better, I think, because the swipepad will appear even at times when you can't get the drop-down thing because you are inside an app. Anyway, it's a free app in the market that I use for a lot of the stuff you are wanting (basically it gives you 12 quick launch buttons that you can set to whatever you want and which appear when you swipe on an area of your choosing) --- try it out and see if it meets your needs:

Thanks for the cool app. Neat idea! but most of the time i find it hard to enter the swipe menu...

I love this app! Key to it is say you on default top right. Don't slide down the edge and to the right it opens notifications. Put your finger right where the screen color ends and the black border starts anywhere that red line showes when you set it up. It vibrates then slide to the left

I crave a brightness button

I have found all kinds of widgets for controlling brightness, but they all have one disadvantage - you have to first go to the home screen and then click on the widget. I really want a way to control brightness from any application without having to leave the application to go back to the home screen. The CM9 based rom I'm using (Paranoid Android) actually has something like this ... but I don't like it for two reasons. The first is that it takes two taps to bring up the brightness slider. (One tap to open the notification window, and a second tape to bring up the toggle screen). The 2nd reason (and more significant) is that the slider is quite small and for me it does not feel very responsive or easy to control. The brightness slider control from some of the widgets I have tried are much easier to use.
Ideally I could bring up a brightness widget by long pressing on the physical home button. Currently this long press on my note will bring up the recently used apps, but this function is already served by a soft button provided by CM9. I've read that the ADWlauncherEX will allow you to reprogram the function of the long press - although installing and learning how to use a launcher seems like overkill, especially since I have a rom that already includes quite a sophisticated launcher.
I found an app that would bring up a brightness slider when you clicked on the vol up or down buttons. This worked well for brightness although was a major drag when all I wanted to do was adjust the volume. I also found an application that would allow you to call an app or a widget in response to a double or triple click of the volume buttons. That seemed ideal because it would give me quick access to a brightness control without interfering with the main use of the volume rocker. Unfortunately that application seems to have been discontinued (why!) and I couldn't even seem to find an old verison of that.
Another idea would be to reassign one of the soft keys provided by CM9. Since these soft keys merely duplicate the functions of the existing galaxy note keys (the physical home button and the two buttons on either side of it). Unfortunately I have yet to find an application that can remap one of those buttons. Another idea would be to add another soft button near the 3 soft buttons that are already there. (Are their any applications that can do that?)
And finally I figured that brightness could be controlled via screen gestures. I did find some applications that claimed to be able to do this, although I couldn't get them to work on my Note.
If you know of any application or method that can provide a brightness control button, please let me know as this is the only remaining aspect of the note's user interface that is still driving me nuts.
Thanks
~Paul
Wasn't there a feature in CyanogenMod 7 that would allow to change brightness via sliding sideways in notification area? Too bad it never worked for me in any of the phones I tried CM7 in. I understood it should have worked with no slider? Just sliding your finger accross the notifications area? That would be better than a slider imo.
I've not used paranoid android, I'm using the RC of CM9 and that does have status bar brightness control. To turn it on you go to system, then Status bar and there is a tick box. Maybe that is still included in PA if it is CM9 based? It lets you control the brightness from anywhere just by swiping left and right on the status bar.
It is not as nice as the notification tray slider you can find in AOKP roms, and there used to be a mod for CM9 that did this, but it no longer works, but it is better than nothing.

Thanks for the tip John. Qbright certainly has one of the best brightness slider bars I've seen and the configurable buttons are great. However I have to say I'm somewhat mystified about how you use it. Qbright says you can activate it by long pressing on the search button. Search button? Do we have such a thing? On either side of the physical home button I only have the menu and back buttons. By long pressing the menu button I do get the search menu ... but it doesn't bring up Qbright. There is also a "Google" button at the top of the launcher. Pressing on that also brings up the search menu, but again it can't bring up Qbright. I'm running Paranoid Android. Maybe that's the problem. Does the stock ICS have a search button?
Thanks
~Paul
To edit the setting.
Open the QBright app and then press the hard menu button left of the home key.

Hi Tinderbox. Thanks for your reply but I think you seriously misinterpreted my question. I mentioned that I like that the Qbright buttons are configurable so I obviously found the preferences menu. But I was asking how you bring up the Qbright widget (other than clicking on its icon from the home screen of course). The documentation suggests this can be done by "long pressing on the search button". (There is no preference item related to this). I couldn't bring up the Qbright widget by long pressing on anything, so I'm wondering how you do this. If you actually have to go back to the home screen to start the widget, that would greatly detract from the beauty of the widget (which I'm sure is why they put the search long press capability into Qbright). But as I indicated in my previous message, it seems that the galaxy note does not have a dedicated search button, so this feature may not work. There are so many ways one could start such a widget I'm somewhat amazed that no one has figured out how to do it. (Or maybe they have and I am just in the dark or very confused). One way would be to long press on the back button. As far as I know, this currently does nothing so there would be no drawback what so ever. Perhaps a long press on the volume up or down button could also work for such a thing. Or an extra item could be added to the menu that appears when you press the power button. Or since I have a CM9 derived rom, it gives me three more soft keys (back, home, and recent apps). A long press on any of those could be used to bring up the widget. Or even a regular press on the first two could be used since they are duplicates for buttons I already have elsewhere.
Is this a valid question, or am I out in left field somewhere?

I once accidentally set my brightness so low that I couldn't see the screen AT ALL.
I found myself really wishing there was some foolproof way to reset the screen to 100% brightness.
For example, rebooting the phone auto-resets the brightness to 100% or something.
I also tried using tasker so some obscure combination like volume+home could also reset the brightness.
I don't recall how I managed to reset my phone - i couldn't see anything. I think I just flailed about on it.

Paul...i am lookingforthis too...qbright should have an option to change that... So you can ise the long oress menu button for us note users wjo dont havr a search butto

Try kimi's.15 toggles. Gives you 15toggles in the notification bar, brightness being one of them. Need to flash it via recovery though.
Can i flash that in temprary cwn? I have a stock rom with the temp.cwm root.method

I think it should beok to flash via temp cwm. Ask in the kim's thread just to be sure.

I use this you can put it anywhere on the screen.
Download Slider Widget and add it to home screen.

At first I thought that might be the answer, but I ran into two problems with it. The main one was that I would accidently change the brightness pretty often when I was just trying to click on an icon for instance. (Unless I made the slider very thin ... but then it was too hard to grab the slider). The other problem was that some of my full screen applications would force themselves on top and the slider would not activate.
Someone in another thread suggested what I now feel is the ultimate solution:

Oh my gosh!!! You weren't kidding. Such an application does really exist
This solves all my problems with the galaxy note.
I can't believe this was so hard to find. I can't imagine that anyone would uninstall this application after trying it. It's like getting 3 extra hardware buttons for free!
I'm using:
- Home,Home to bring up Qbright.
- Home,Back to bring up papyrus (you never know when you need to scribble a note)
- Home,Menu to bring up a toggle widget (haven't decided which one yet, although I'm sure it will be easier to use than the built in PA one).
Thanks a million.

Type in "Home2 Shortcut" into the play store. Or you could probably type in the author's name which is "Hideki Kato".
~Paul
You can adjust the brightness on most Note ROMs by deactivating auto brightness and tap + hold on the statusbar and slide the finger.
Left = Decrease the brightness
Right = Increase the brightness

[Q] holding home button

I looked around but didn't find anything, although that doesn't mean anything.
My question is that when holding the home button, you get a whole semi circle, but just giogke now or whatever that silly thing is. Is there a way of adding programs or shortcuts to this popup. I have zero use for the Google thing so seems a shame if I am unable to add more useful items to this semi circle. Could prove pretty useful.

I haven't seen anywhere you can add to that or change it. I love the google now thing, just to be able to tell it to wake me up in an hour if nothing else:laugh:
Try this app if you haven't already though, it will let you launch an app just by sliding in from the side of the screen, or bottom, or whereever you want.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.conduction.swipepad.android&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsIm1vYmkuY29uZHVjdGlvbi5zd2lwZXBhZC5hbmRyb2lkIl0.
Instead of launching Google Now you could get get an app launch list using 'Launch Now', which replaces default behavior. Just serach for it in PlayStore, as I may not insert links (10 posts rule)....
There's a way for people who want to hook into the swipe up action that may not be documented. Apps like "Sudo Quicklaunch" make the system switch the icon to a generic search icon and show you the standard action completion pop-up. (One can see this in the app's promotional video.) I haven't personally tested that app, but I have seen the swipe up reassignment behavior with "Secure Settings." The Secure Settings app actually changes the icon displayed by the swipe up menu, when you tell it to "Always" use that app, and Google Search does the same thing. Coincidentally, the same reassignment behavior appears to be possible with the shop icon in the stock launcher. (I saw it for myself in the days of Honeycomb with the transition from the original Honeycomb Market app to the new, unified Market app, because both were installed, it asked me to choose when I tapped shop.)
