[Q] How many times will T-Mobile honor my warranty if... - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

...my MT4G was purchased from Craigslist? I know HTC will as long as it's still under warranty. The reason I ask is because once HTC takes in my device for repair or replacement, my warranty will only be good up to 60 or 90 days and they will only accept another exchange or repair if I run into the same problem.
The reason for wanting an exchange is because I can't transfer any files from my MT4G to my PC when I'm in Disk Mode. I've tried three different SD cards because I thought the one that came with this phone was defective but it's apparently the device itself.
To make matters worse, my buttons making noises and I have the inferior screen. The hardware imperfections do not really bother me as much as not being able to transfer files in Disk Mode since my MacBook doesn't have an SD card slot.
By the way, I'm new to the MT4G forums. My previous smartphone was an HD2.

T-Mo will not help you AFAIK. It will be "return it to the point of sale". I had to pull some teeth to get customer service on the phone to let me swap my wife's phone when the retail T-Mo store we bought it at refused to because we did not have the cardboard sleeve for the box it came in (and they would not just swap handset bodies). Lucky for me, retentions department came through for me and felt it was pretty lame of the store to treat us how they did.

[SOLVED! Yes they do :)] Does HTC's warranty cover the HD?

Hi folks
I recently bought a second-hand HTC Shift, which seemed to work just fine untill I tried installing Windows 7 on it. It started acting weird, so I formatted the drive, which failed. I ran scandisk which ran for over a day and failed. The HD restore function does not work either, telling me there's a HD error.
I then went to the store where the previous owner had bought the device, telling them that the HD was dead. The clerk told me that the warranty didn't cover the HD, so I frustratlingly left the store.
Do you guys know if the clerk is absolutely right or not? There's still one month left on the warranty and I'd be extremely unhappy if I have to spend money on replacing the HD if I don't have to as it might be covered by the warranty.
Thank you for your interest!

It is kinda touch and go on the warranty. They should cover it, but they may say that your "unauthorized" modification i.e., flashing new software, voids the warranty. Your best bet may be to just read the thread on changing the HD to a larger one, and do that instead! It is not too difficult to do. You can get a new 80gb drive for it that will fit right in and you will not have a recovery partition to deal with. You would be able to then put Windows 7 on it instead of that crappy Vista o/s. You will have to download 7 from the ms site and make sure that you follow the thread on W7 updating to the letter!!
Later
Oddly enough my HD died on me today, was working fine yesterday, left the shift in W7 powered on when I went to bed. Came down this morning to a message please insert valid boot disk and the HD clicking to itself every 7 or 8 seconds. tinkering gave me nothing, Phoned HTC, end of a 30 minute phone call they come get it tomorow and provided they don't find it to be my fault, they shouldn't it was sat on the side, it shouldn't cost me a penny
Pitty I've lost my machine for a while though.
Success!!!
Thanks for your input guys!
As dark as my situation seemed, at the time, I now have a fully working Shift again with a brand new harddrive, that HTC replaced for me
I'm think the clerk misread the warranty statement by HTC, which is on the warranty card that came with my Shift, which reads: "The Limited Warranty provided by HTC for the purchased Product excludes (i) any damages of the hard disk that are resulted from mishandling and/or dropping of the Product, and (ii) any losses of data, program and/or information resulted from such mishandling and/or dropping." He must have read it as if HTC did not cover the harddrive at all!
I contacted HTC which told me that the warranty would of course cover the harddrive also, as it would with any other computer you would have bought from any store. With their email in hand, I returned to the store, which then sent my Shift to repairs under warranty coverage! Although I had to wait nearly 3 months for it to return, I'm now back in business!
If any of you guys face a similar situation, I'd suggest you to do the same

What Phone Do I Have?

My wife bought me a phone for christmas. She thought she was buying the new T-Mobile Dash 3G. However, when we recieved the phone and booted it up, it did not have winmo on it. When viewing the website where she bought the phone it appears to be the Dash 3G with winmo (t-mobile branded) on it, but it is not. I am unsure what OS the phone has on it. I do know that it has some java apps on it and opera mini. According to the website the phone is the HTC S521. When I take the battery out, it says Model: K688 I have tried several ways to get the phone to boot into bootloader mode, in hopes that I ccould load winmo onto the phone. I tried volume up while powering up, volume down while powering up ad camera button while powering up, but nothing seems to work. Here is the website where the phone was purchased:

DHGate, eh?
Your wife should have done some research (asking the seller) first.
A large variety of items on there are copied; on the flip side a lot of sellers have the sense to include the wording "High Copy" if they copy a brand at least (unfortunate that it's not listed in the ad as such, one would think it was legit), or they will tell you directly if you ask about product specs.
Thing is they don't pay the seller until you're satisfied. If you have problems with it (as you appear to be having), open a dispute process with them and they should be able to refund your money.
DHGate is good for Chinese stuff (I bought a "Mac Air Book" - Mac Air clone, actually works quite well under Linux), but again as I said before, research before buying.
That phone retails at $300CAD flat out (~289US), so wouldn't common sense would click in at that point, and ask, "Why is this perfectly new thing selling for so cheap?" What you have is a good KIRF.
Have to agree with vcolm85.
I used to sell alot of stuff on eBay that came from China, and specifically purchased through DHGate, and on more then one occassion I got stung by false sellers making wild claims. Most sellers will state that the item selling is a copy or fake when asked, but not all. Usually any mobile phone that sells stating that it has TV is a dead giveaway that it is a Chinese knockoff.
Usually with DHGate, they will hold the payment from the seller like an escrow service until the customer has logged back into the deal and ok'd the payment to go through. As mentioned, if the payment has already been authorised, open a dispute and hopefully DHGate will get you your money back - fingers crossed.
Unfortunatelly the old addage of "too good to be true" is more often the case true, but don't believe there aren't good bargains to be had, especially on DHGate, you just have to be careful - at one stage I bought Sd Card readers that could read up to 2GB cards for onyl 75c US each, was a great bargain.

Well, i placed my order with DHgate, but never received response on it till day. And true, the products dont work rather. Then i checked with Chinabuye, an online store from China. I got sticked with them for their great service, timely delivery with no MOQ limit and best quality products. I am from India, i receive the products with no shipping charges and quite reasonable rates on all their products i buy.As Quality is more important for any online purchase!

VERY Impressed with HTC USA!

2 weeks ago to the day, I accidentally dropped my HD2. Nothing major.. I was actually sitting down when it happened, and the phone bumped my ankle then gently bumped the floor.. no big deal right? (It has a hard shell protector). Well, then as the phone flipped over, it bumped the edge of a table leg and damn! Four hairline cracks on the digitizer. And no more functionality though the LCD was fine and the phone was working but locked with no way to unlock it.
So, I weigh out the cost of repair vs. replacing it all together. Ultimately, it was cheaper to repair the screen.
Here is what blew my mind! Keep in mind that I am in Canada, I purchased the phone (T-Mobile Branded) on the 'net, it's unlocked, tweaked, and therefore there is no warranty.
So, on 04/01/2011, I contact HTC USA. To my surprise I actually get an American on the phone not some call center in a third world country. Wow! The person totally has their act together and in less than 10 minutes, I have a quote for the repair. Wow again! The rep explained everything in detail along with the mandatory disclaimers and while they were finishing up that, I'm receiving an email with all the necessary details and an RMA and Case number and shipping instructions. Wow yet again!
04/02/2011, I send the phone to the repair center in Texas. By 04/05/2011 at 10:50pm the phone has arrived at the repair center. The next morning, I get a call from HTC confirming the damage (which I knew), and they simply want a yes or no to go ahead with the repairs or not. By the afternoon, I have a FedEx tracking number, the phone is fixed and it's on its way back to me in Canada. Wow one more time!
04/11/2011 FedEx is at my door with my phone and HTC picked up the return shipping. Well.. you guessed it! Wow!
I am reconfiguring the phone back to the way I had it prior to sending it as I write this. It had been hard reset to factory spec which if fine and to be expected since they likely run various diag after repair.
So, for $120.00 + $25.00 Shipping, my phone is working again!
There's a case study for keeping our companies and their support centers on North American soil. There are dozens of companies I could list that should be taking notes. 8)
Nice to see a positive post like this. glad you got you HD2 repaired and are now back to modding it.
The whole repair process was nine days including weekends which I think is darn good!
That said, I was without the phone/device for 2 weeks. Talk about withdrawals! LOL!
Amazing how reliant we become on these devices. I use it to manage my daily activities for 3 businesses, 1 job, and my personal life/activities. I was on the verge of anxiety at times! Hehehehe!
At least I had my trusty HTC 8125 as backup and while it cannot connect to my cellular provider's network for phone/text/data, at least I had my calendars, tasks, notes, and contacts but I'll tell ya, talk about feeling tethered to a land line and out of the loop.
Yep, it just got HardSPL 4, my preferred radio flash, BsB, Total Commander, and a few other goodies back on and is now syncing with my Desktop and Exchange. d'-'

It was not a bad price if it was a year ago, but I just picked up another near mint condition one for $150 with everything included off criaglist.
Sent from HTC HD2 with Android
Yeah, fair enough however, in Canada, the phone is not even available therefore my options were a bit more limited to purchase a new phone through a system where there is a little more security in knowing that if it turns out to be a bad deal, the purchase it covered. i.e. Buyer Protection from eBay or anything like that.
It's not like you can hop on a local Craigslist up here and find them readily.
So, the replacement cost for a whole phone was much higher, and the repair was the way to go.

You're a lucky guy.
I've had less good experiences in the Benelux here.
I called in mine for a screen and gps issue that is warranty issue since I run the official image on this HD2.
They didn't pickup the device twice as promised which drove me up the wall since I had my colleague involved and had to change several appointments with my clients for.
After I complained I got called by a customer care guy and was promised my device would be fixed one week after the pickup.
Called them this afternoon since we are one week further and my device was waiting for 2 parts but they didn't know which.
I wonder how many parts can break in the HD2 that direct to the fault. Guessing the main board and an LCD screen?
Well according to the customer service I will have to wait for the parts to come in.
I am so disappointed in the service and hole customer care after having a touch, touch pro, touch hd etc.
The touch pro which costed me over 500 Euro ended up in the trash after 3 failed repairs and numerous errors which where caused by the repair center. Sending it back to another address and name was only the tip of the iceberg.
Looking around for a dedicated Android device the LG optimus 2x looks good since it has a 24hour swap warranty.
Sorry to hear bro!
Heck, they even confirmed parts availability while on the initial call just prior to setting up the RMA. Maybe I just lucked out.
I work in the IT field and deal with all kinds of this stuff all the time and it has been years since I encountered this type of competence and efficiency. Don't know what else to say.
Have you checked out the Motorola Atrix?

This thing looks cool! Watched several segments on it during the CES show back in February. My only question or disappointment was in all the promo vids from the CES they were touting Android 3 Honeycomb however at the Motorola site its tech specs list Android 2.2.
Good luck in your search!

The Motorola looks interesting but try to find one in Europe.
I very agree with your assessment of HTC. My story is one better. I had bought my phone (HTC ELFIN P3452 TOUCH) in India. It had some battery charging issues and when on a whim I finally contacted HTC US, the lady told me that the warranty on the phone had expired 5 days back. I politely requested her if there is something she could do. She came back a few minutes later and told me she will take the phone as under warranty, but she will have to get back to me after figuring out where I should be sending the phone for repair as they figured HTC touch is not serviced anymore. I did not get a call back for 10 days and then I called back and explained my situation again and the previous call to a totally different lady. She gave me an RMA and asked me to ship to their TX facility. I got the phone back with brand new board in a week. But then I noticed a crack in the body. Since now the phone was under a 90 day warranty, I called back and explained the situation. They gave another RMA and so I sent it back. another week later, I get the phone back and it was brand new everything including the LCD and the phone. New IMEI.
HTC is top notch. So my current phone is HD2 and backup phone is Touch.

[Q] Using a MicroSD voids Warranty?!

I just got off of the phone with AT&T tech support. I am having an issue with the buttons on my Focus randomly pressing themselves and so I called. They ran me through the usual procedures (restarting phone, updating etc) and then connected me to the Warranty dept to exchange my phone. Then they asked if I had ever used a MicroSD card, to which I replied yes. She went on to tell me using the MicroSD card, even if you were no longer using it, constitutes damage to the phone and voids its warranty.
I argued with her for a while, about how the phone CAME WITH instructions on how to use the slot and that it wasn't mentioned anywhere that it would void my warranty. She told me I could get a new phone at full price, or contact Samsung.
Was anyone else aware of this?
What should I do?
Same thing happened to me.
I even referenced the page in the online manual that states the Sandisk MicroSD Class 2 8GB card is supported, which I was using. They were absolutely no help at all and very rude about the whole thing.
The rep I talked to told me I had infected my phone with a virus because of the card. It's clear that they are quite ignorant and are following what must be a corporate mandate to void all focus that have any problems with SD card.
Bottom line people: if they ask if you use an SD card....the answer should always be: "NO, I have never put in an SD card."
Fortunately, Samsung was quite pleasant and fixed the phone for me. Only bummer was no phone for 3 weeks and their tracking system never worked so I had no idea what was happening with my phone until it showed up on my doorstep. The replaced the main circuit board. I think some have bad nand chips.
If you paid for your repair I would take this up with the store people and possible phone support escalating it each time until you get some relief.
I went to the store and specifically asked about a memory card for my phone. I showed them the sticker on the back and said that the phone MUST show it is logo'd for Windows Phone 7 and they pulled out and handed me a 16GB Class 2 memory stick. I proceeded to tell them that the phone manual said bad things could happen etc... and that it HAD to be compatible with my phone and they said "There will be no problem with this card, it will work in your phone"
If that doesnt convince you they are full of $hit then maybe this will:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...TM)+-+Black&q_sku=sku4980540#fbid=mDVcGxoCjhm
Scroll down just under the phone pic and click the "Compatible Accessories" link. Near the middle of the page is a 16GB SH card that they freaking SELL for as compatible with the device. Changing course mid stream when you have a problem is a load of crap and they need to be called on it.
Everyone should call and say that they bought the phone becaue it had expansion capabilities and the phone was misrepresented and what is AT&T going to do about it?

yeah I totally argued with her about how I wouldn't have bought the phone if I knew that the expansion capabilities would void the warranty. And im not going through Samsung, they freaking suck. Not being phoneless for three weeks over a glitch that I can deal with, and I'm not paying for it either.
I asked if there was a way that I could file a complaint about this and the chick on the phone said no. I think that I am just going to call and ask for a supervisor. Or maybe I should go into a store? Everytime I ask somebody at a store about something like this they just tell me to call tech support...

Sure glad I haven't had any issues like this. I have a rev1.3 model. Using a 16gb class 4 generic SDHC card. Put it in, it configured, and I now have 22GB total memory. I was mad to find that I had to buy an extra battery online somewhere. They looked at me like I was crazy at AT&T when i asked for another one. They have a million different iPhone accessories, but none for anyone else. Their stores are garbage and full of useless people who do not know squat about their phones.
I was also unaware of using a microSD card would void my warranty though. It's the reason I bought this phone...b/c at the time, there were no other new phones with that ability. Got mine late 2010. Samsung should post something about this on their site though, because this would piss me off if i had issues and needed my warranty to replace the phone.
clarify with them
They are probably confused with the surround which will void the warranty. Explain to them that you read the manual in the book it states that adding an expansion microsd card does not void the warranty. Also explain to her that the slot is user accessible.
I too was told that putting an sd card in my focus voided my warranty. I sent it into Samsung to get reflashed. Never got nodo or pre-nodo update notifications I tried all possible hacks to get it to update. Att rep was a jerk. I even talked to a supervisor. Showed them on att.com the 16gb sdcard that I bought that's certified. And they still said nothing they could do.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
My Focus bricked itself so I got a warranty replacement. I specifically told the woman on the phone that I had never used a memory card in my phone, even though I did for about 5 months. I had read this thread and didn't want to pay $415 for a new phone that I didn't even break.
Will they be able to tell that I was using one, even though the phone is completely bricked? The people in the AT&T store actually tried putting a card into my phone and turning it on when I brought it in, I'll just blame them.

[Q] Dead DZ and HTC Repair in the UK

This afternoon my DZ decided to die. I checked the phone and then 10 minutes later went to ring my wife and... nothing, phone wouldn't respond to the power button. I whipped out the battery and left it out for 2 minutes but still nothing.
I have since tried plugging in the charger and again nothing, not even the orange charging light. Tried leaving the battery out for 1/2 hour and removing the memory and sim cards and even plugging in the charger with the cards and battery removed, but still nothing.
looks like it's serious.
I have had the phone 11 months, I got it from a little shop (well booth really) that was branded as HTC in the local Westfield shopping centre. The little shop has now disappeared. The phone is sim unlocked and not tied to a carrier. When I dug out the receipt it is in the name of a company called Westcoast Mobile. They have a website (www.westcoast.co.uk) but they seem to be a rather diverse company but not one that sells phones to the public.
Consequently I was planning on calling HTC on Monday to see if I can get the phone sent off for repair. Does anyone know if I'm likely to have problems with HTC or will they be happy to help me?
In the mean time I have dug out my trusty HTC Typhoon which is currently synching my email and charging up. Old phone but it does the job and I love the size and shape of it.
HTC warranty is one yr. Should be ok. I bought mine used so I always fixed mine myself. But you bought yours new.

My suggestion is this:
Try buying a new battery , maybe it will fix the problem
Also if the phone will be recovered , take care of this with buying a new silicon case or something like this. Today my DZ cashed by up to 2M and nothing problem , sceen perfect i got luck.
Also i add if you realy love the phone , and the repair cost is to much , buy one used on ebay like me. I have bought one for 220€ @ 170£ , with 23months of guaranty and it's perfect.
Good luck mate

I'm wondering whether they had some sort of tie in with HTC as the booth was completely branded as HTC anad they were selling sim free phones on any network.
I got a phone from them because:
1. They had the DZ and I could have for free by renewing my contract with O2.
2. The sales bloke could string a sentence together unlike the fool in the O2 shop.

I have since tried plugging in the charger and again nothing, not even the orange charging light. Tried leaving the battery out for 1/2 hour and removing the memory and sim cards and even plugging in the charger with the cards and battery removed, but still nothing.
looks like it's serious.
Consequently I was planning on calling HTC on Monday to see if I can get the phone sent off for repair. Does anyone know if I'm likely to have problems with HTC or will they be happy to help me?

I'm a Brit too and I had a pretty similar issue just a few months back. The bizarre part is I wasn't even doing anything "risky".
Get in touch with HTC ASAP. They were really good to me.
I contacted them via their website (you'll need the serial number/IMEI). Very polite and helpful responses and offered courier pickup for mainland UK addresses.
Didn't take long at all for a repair, and I believe it was back with me in 2-3 days.
I can't speak for their phone support, other than that they called me to check if the phone was still working okay and asked if they could close the ticket. An unexpected touch, but appreciated.
Motorola barely lifted a finger for me when dealing with my MS2 issues... but that is another story.
Since you have the receipt, you should be fine. Again, just get in touch!
I warn you, it will most likely come back with gingerbread like mine did, but you can still downgrade and root (if you so choose) using the guides on here.

Thanks for that, it gives me a bit more confidence. It's just annoying the phone was in my pocket in a sleeve for 15 minutes and it just died.
Well I rang them on Monday morning, at first they wanted to send me a new battery but I pointed out it didn't do anything without the battery when you plugged the charger in. The bloke had to check with his supervisor then came back and said "let's arrange to pick the phone up". I had to email them a copy of the receipt from when I bought the phone and that was that.
They emailed me a form and a label, I boxed up the phone and a courier picked it up Tuesday afternoon. Pretty straightforward really.
Just waiting to hear that they have the phone now.
Got the phone back this morning, so exactly 7 days from calling HTC to having a working phone again. I think that is pretty good service.
Seems like the problem was pretty terminal as the phone has returned with a new IMEI and according to the paperwork with the phone it has had the "PCBA" and "flash board" replaced.
The phone even came in a little box with "I'm back" printed on it.
Sounds great ! Was that all free, under warranty ?
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.

All free, didn't cost me a penny.
The bloke I spoke to at HTC told me I had a two year warranty after he had spoken with his supervisor.
Is that two years from the purchese date or the repair date (as in did they extend the warrenty for you)
It will be 2 years from the purchase date. The paperwork with the phone when it comes back says something along the lines of you don't get any extra warranty after the repair date.
