This started happening to me about a week ago, I run an app such as Google maps or nav and it works just fine. But when I close the app and the phone stops actively using the GPS, it reboots.
I do not think this has anything to with my current rom/kernel as i tried multiple ones even stock, and the problem still occurs.
This started happening to me very soon after I applied the leaked 2.2 update. Keeping the GPS off has caused me from getting stuck in a reboot loop.
Post #2 in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746247 alludes to Sprint resetting the GPS or something to that effect. I am going to give that a try as soon as I can get on mainstream 2.2.
I decided to rename the thread because it seems many people have this problem, and people are posting solutions that worked for them ..
Im using Android build : Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3 rEVOlution
If you get a network problem, try doing one of these :
Enable Airplane mode, wait for a while, then Disable it. [tgtoys]
Get a program that shows CPU usage, and try killing each program one by one to identify which program is causing your network to hang. [Gushfevah]
--> Gushfevah mentioned that STOCKS was causing a problem, try killing this first.
-------> Gushfevah suggested using System Panel Lite, try using that and comment if it fixed your problem !
Try a Hot Restart, fixed mine once.
I dont take credits for any of the solutions that worked, thank the people who replied down here that tried to help me fix my problem.

Hello all,
Im using this android build : Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3 rEVOlution
Can someone please tell me how to fix my network connection problem ?
It was working fine yesterday but it suddently stopped working today ...
It shows 2G with a green arrow pointing downwards and a white one above it pointing upwards ...
I cant use the market, email or weather.
For example, weather says :
CONNECTION ERROR :
Sorry, but the connection dropped while your weather information was downloading
Please help !!!
This is a known problem. All builds using PPP data are experiencing drops, search through the threads.
To temporarily fix put your phone in airplane mode and then turn back to regular.

i have problems with cellular signal too on the same version
although its a great build, i'm facing natwork drops and connection failiers, some off my calls are hunged during talk.
radio version 2.12.50.02_2
I changed to MDJ Froyo Revolution 1.5 yesterday (love the build BTW) and had this random problem. (white arrow up, green arrow stuck on down) My phone became verry laggy, Airplane mode didn't work to sort it out, and all i could do was restart the phone.
When it did it the 3rd time i used "System Panel Lite" to see what was running, and the CPU seemed stuck on 99%, i killed everything in the list, and straight away it was fine.
Next time it happened i once again opened up System Panel and killed apps one by one. The one that made everything ok was "Stocks" which automatically runs on start i presume.
I restarted again and waited to see if it did it again, sure enough after about 1/2 hour using various internet apps it locked up, so once again i killed the Stocks program and it ran fine again.
Thinking that quite obviously something was wrong with the Stocks application i went into the Sync settings and Stocks was not set to auto sync, but it had the white sync circle next to it as though it was trying to sync but hadn't completed.
Anyways, i manually synced it, and since then i've not had a single problem since last night.
I don't know if its a co-incidence, and i'm still trying my hardest to get the data to freeze, but it hasn't as yet after a good few hours using Internet related features.
Will keep you posted on this.

@Gushfevah:
That's an interesting solution (sort off), I'm going to give that a go now!
Was pretty fine today ... Just a few hours ago, I lost the internet connection ..
Nothing is bringing it back again .. Im waiting for the internet signal to comeback so I can get System Panel Lite and check for a solution !
EDIT
When I check 4G in wireless and networks ... it says 4G failed ...
Is that the problem ?
POSSIBLE SOLUTION
Can someone try this when they have a problem ?
Plug your phone into the charger, then do a hot reboot ... it solved my network issue ! well for now atleast ...
I will try doing this again if it stops and reply back here with the results !

I think system lite panel is a good way to see whats using up the CPU for network data .. probably jamming up the whole thing in the process.
When I got my few mins of network availability, I rushed to the market place to get it .. Well until now I dont have any problems after I killed some apps using panel lite ..
Im going to add the on the first topic
Not had chance to reply again till now.
I used to use the Hot Reboot as it was the only was i could re-establish the data connection, as airplane mode wouldn't work when it froze.
Once i found i had the System Panel and realised what it did i decided it was worth a shot.
Not had any Data Drops so far, but i've been using WiFi mostly since, and reconditioning the battery.
Gonna keep an eye on the system panel, and may buy the full version for the logging an reports to see whats hogging the CPU if it happens again once i switch back on the Data.

Thanks for the report
Can you please explain what do you mean by reconditioning the battery ?

See that thread
Its been 2 days since my network is dropped and wont come back at all !!
I tried restarting, airplane mode, stopping connections .... nothing is working :S
I opened panel lite but nothing was hogging up the memory ... what the ????
Any ideas ?
Okay; so last night I unplugged my phone at 100% right as I went to sleep. I do this on a regular basis so nothing new.
I wake up this morning to my phone being turned off/dead. I attempt to turn it on after plugging it into the wall..and it got stuck on the boot logo and would vibrate in short bursts.
Weird; because I haven't flashed anything in a few weeks and everything seemed stable.
I pull the battery and reboot the phone..seems to work.
But as the phone powers on; the screen to log in to my account pops up to restore my data etc etc..
And guess what happens next? Force closes for every app I have install..no structural fc's.. just happens when I try opening ANY app installed.
I did try running Dolphin Browser through the phone's cache and moving the cache to my SD Card. Didn't work with it in the phone; but moving it to SD card allowed it to work for a bit then it crashed.
I fixed it by re-flashing the current rom i was running. I am running ext4; was posting to see if anyone has come across this?
What rom were you on?

I haven't seen or heard of this before but I would suggest a fresh install. Odin back to stock dk28 and redoing everything the manual way. It's a ***** but dollars to donuts it fixes your problems.

Been running midnight 2.2 for a while now. And it supports ext4; before you shoot that down
@kenvan I already fixed the issue; I was just seeing if anyone else ran into this..and to try and find out what caused it. Wish I was home so I could of gotten a logcat :/
Hey guys, I'm having an issue where my Atrix keeps disconnecting the data connection every few seconds whenever I start using data (browsing, youtube, google music, etc).
When the issue first started I was running ATT 4.5.91 with 01.77.15 Baseband. So far I tried factory reset, reflashing baseband, CM7 Ba2Tf, and right now I'm running on ATT 4.5.133 rooted and deodexed, with 01.77.36P ATT Baseband. I did the update to 4.5.133 and the current radio via CWM after wiping cache, dalvik and data. The problem still occurs.
If I keep my phone idle, it stays connected (blue bars, blue H+ icon and arrows beneath it).
A few seconds after I start browsing the web or using other data intensive tasks it keeps disconnecting the data connection at frequent intervals, every few seconds. It doesn't drop any signal bars, but the H+ and bars turn grey (lost connection to google servers) and doesn't show the Up/Down arrows below H+, meaning it disconnected the data connection. After a few seconds it connects back and everything turns blue again.
It's really annoying and I'm out of ideas. I have tried reflashing everything, another rom, another radion, also tried setting the apns by hand, all to no avail. Some insight would be very much appreciated, thanks in advance.
Sounds like an app problem. The new market did this in it's earlier versions. Would have to reboot or go into and out of airplane mode to reconnect data. What apps are you using when it happens?
In my case, CPU Tuner was causing this behavior.
I think I've set it up incorrectly or something and as soon as I uninstalled it the problem went away, but will try it again soon.

Thanks for the help, guys.
In order to test for an offending app, I cleared /data (factory reset on CWM), cache/dalvik cache and installed the latest CM7 weekly. I did not flash gapps and did not restore/installany third party apps.
The issue still appeared while browsing the web. Then I restored my current rom (att 4.5.133) and left the phone sit for a couple hours. After a while I did a few tests and everything was normal again. Then I went to bed after testing the phone for about one hour and when I woke up the issue was back. Could it be that my carrier has anything to do with it? I'm trying to get a hold of another carrier's SIM with data enable to test it out.
I had this exact issue. I was running CM7 Ba2Tf for several weeks, no problems. Then all of a sudden, my connection to google would drop for no reason at all.
The H+ & signal bars would turn white, indicating that I still had a data connection to AT&T, but no connection to google. Every time I used one of the gapps, the connection to google would drop. This was especially apparent when I was using google talk.
I cleared caches, data, re-flashed, wiped, etc..., and the problem persisted. There was absolutely no way around the problem. I'm baffled that after completing clearing & re-flashing everything, the problem persisted.
I could not find a workaround. I am now running a fruitcake variant, and do not have this problem. I really miss CM7, and am curious to hear if anyone has found a legitimate solution.
It looks like this is not a new bug either. Check out Cyanogen mod issue 3557.
I know that this thread doesn't have much action, but for what it's worth, I don't have this problem on Jokers ICS Roms.
It appears that when this problem manifests itself, it's somewhat rom specific.

Sounds strange, but I had the exact same problem after I installed Chess for Buddies. I removed the app and everything went back to normal. I do miss playing chess though

I have it on Turl's ICS.
That's crazy! Did you have it the instant you flashed the ROM, or were you able to run for a few days?
What were you running beforehand?

I think those having this problem should try removing APNs they are not using, thus only leave the one you are using.
I was having this issue on any application that would load up the GPS, as soon as I deleted all other APNs and just left the one I needed I never had the problem. I think part of the issue is when GPS connected it would quickly knock me out from data but on reconnect it would try the standard ATT APN versus the mvno I am using.
Probably won't help for everyone but that was my solution and it has worked on various ROMs I have tried (Blur, CM7, CM9).
That's a solid observation mastermind.
I would to add that the evening before I started seeing the issue, I enabled tethering on my cm7 the (ba2tf). Pretty much the next day I started seeing the issue.
Perhaps something got screwed up in the APN settings when I tethered. Up until then I hadn't seen the issue.

Today my GS5 started freaking out. I cannot install or update any apps from the Google Play store - they all get stuck at a certain percentage of the way through the download. Each app has a different sticking point (22%, 39%, 75%, etc.), but each app sticks at precisely the same percentage every time. At the same time, my wifi has gone completely bonkers. If I turn on wifi, it will connect to my home network like normal, then drop off without warning, then get back on, then drop back off, etc. every few seconds. If I go into the wifi settings and observe while this happens, I see the message that the phone will connect when the signal is stronger...but if I look at the details, my wifi signal shows as Excellent strength and 100+Mbps speed! The phone is warmer than usual (though not hot) and battery is draining faster than usual, but that's probably to be expected given what else is going on. The wifi network itself isn't having any noticeable issues with any of my other devices or laptops.
Both of these things began happening at the same time, but I'm not sure what triggered it. Everything was working correctly this morning, but sometime this evening everything blew up. I uninstalled all apps that have been installed in the past few days anyway, but the behavior persists. I am not rooted, and I have not yet upgraded to Lollipop. I have rebooted and cleaned the app cache several times, and there is at least 3GB of free space on the internal partition (and far more on the SD card).
I don't even know how to trouble shoot this! I would be most grateful if someone could give me some guidance on how to resolve this. Thanks!
Just a few questions. What OS build is your S5 running? Is it rooted? If it is rooted are you running any Xposed modules or have any apps that might have caused this?

I'm running 4.4.4 (see screenshot), not rooted. I have not (to my knowledge) touched any Xposed modules. Any apps that might have caused the problem have been uninstalled (unless I accidentally missed something).
Just FYI for anyone else who might be having these issues...I think we have some answers. After some testing and other suggestions, it looks like I have the 5.0 firmware but am still on 4.4.4, and that discrepancy appears to be causing the freakout. I assume Verizon pushed the new firmware during a reboot over the past couple days because I certainly didn't do it intentionally (and I have no plans to upgrade to 5.0 Lollipop anytime soon, either). However, by unselecting the Smart Network Switch functionality, it appears the wifi is behaving itself again and all is back to normal. Thanks, Big Red.
