AT&T Smartphone Data Usage Alert for X10

This morning I got text from AT&T that they moved me from my $15 unlimited data plan to $25 2GB smartphone dataplan . Did this happen to anyone? I am wondering is this has got anything to do with X10 coming to AT&T soon? My wife has Nokia N97 and she didn't get the message (touch wood).
Damn, it sucks to pay them $25 when you pay full price for your phone. I am going to call them and at least try to grandfather me to $30 unlimited plan instead of this 2MB plan as it should help when I grab a Huawei S7 Android Tablet or similar device.

are you sure it's 2MB instead of 2GB? that could be used up in no time.

lol I wasn't aware of a 2MB plan..what can you do with that? send 3 emails a month?

I also got the text this morning. Sucks. I purposefully bought the x10 in may because I had heard the nexus one was recognized by att and required the smartphone plan. Going to put my sim back in the old nokia n95 and try to switch it back to the 10 family data plan. The only reason I buy unlocked phones is because of the cheaper data plan. If I was going to pay for the full smartphone plan, I would just get a subsidized phone from them for cheap. The smartphone plan is 2gb btw, not 2mb. From my usage, 2gb would be plenty, do you guys actually use more than 2gb a month?

This sucks... anyone have any success with contacting AT&T to switch back?

I just finished talking to AT&T. I switched my SIM card to my old W810i and told them I didnt have a smartphone. They are trying to switch me back to my original $15 Unlimited Data for Non-Smartphone plan. Looks like i'm going to have to buy another phone...
Any ideas? Switch back to X1 or X2? :/

It's complete bs that we need to pay for the extremely overpriced data plan when we didn't receive any subsidy from them. I don't care what they spew out about them doing us a fair by giving us enough data so we don't get overcharged. It's the same internet we've been receiving from them and it's been that way for years.

When you call them can you also ask them whether they detected you by IMEI or your total usage, because I am also using the x10a on AT&T but has no data plan and have yet to receive the text message. Thanks

I received the text for the smartphone data plan today too. I guess the rumors of the x10 going to at&t are true. What's a good data counter app for the x10/android besides the at&t one? I want a widget of some sort.
I may be getting rid of my x10 now. I've always wanted to try an n900 or even e72 and may end up doing so. Was going to get an ipod touch in september for media anyway. Not sure what to do. No point in buying unlocked for me if I can't use medianet (even though technically we are supposed to use the data plan anyway), even though I also buy unlocked just so I can switch phones often. When they finally remove medianet for good, then I'll get sucked in to their data capped plans. Until then, the war continues.

I used to work for att as a csr so ill throw in my two cents.
Whether they can match your imei to a specific model is unimportant. The system has a way of flagging people using smartphones. From what I understand you get flagged when your phone tries to access the data network with an incorrect or non existant feature. So if you have no data plan don't access ur data through the network and you won't get flagged. If u have one of the non smartphone data plans u are gonna get flagged sooner or later.
PS if u get the text saying u have been put on a data plan call them and tell them u were only trying your friends phone. Get a non smartphone imei ready and they should be able to remove it.

Guys why all the grumbling over $30, I'm with vodafone in the UK and my mobile price plan is for calls and data. I pay £30 GBP which is about $40-45 USD, for that I get 600 minutes of calls, 500 sms & 1gb of data. Yes 1gb and that's only a recent change because smartphones becoming so popular, when I started my contact in April I only got 500mb and went over that the first two months.
Do you guys get calls included in your plans? Not sure how it works in the US & Canada?
I wish I could get 2gb for $30 which is about £20 GBP but that's dependent on included call time.

Oops about the 2MB plan. Talked to AT&T CSR and they won't let me grandfather to $30 plan as I was on $15 unlimited dumb phone plan. So, I am sC*W#*@*. Hope I don't exceep 2GB. Started to enable WiFi and also checked the notify option for WiFi Networks.
I because of the crazy data use by iPhone users AT&T is making everyone suffer with these stupid limited data plans as I now need to monitor my use.

I was told I was detected by my data usage. So, I am wondering even if I go back to something like W995a, I still would probably chewing in lot of data but these days I got too depended on Google maps to check out restaurant reviews, etc. I was told the $15 unlimited data plan will exist if I ever get another dumb phone.

In canada we pay 30$ for 1gb. I would gladly pay that for 2gb.

I just got off the phone with at&t ccr, and after a lot of persistence, it seems at&t is really getting the x10, or at least something from sony that fed them am imei list.
Also I have some good news.
After opening a ticket and talking to two separate reps (one from the regular customer care and one from the business dept), both seem to believe that an elevated team will be able to change my plan to the smartphone unlimited data.
To those who tried and were unsuccessful, I would try again. Having the right rep really means a lot in these kinds of situations.

I am in Canada and pay $35 for unlimited (5 GB soft cap). That's with Wind Mobile.

Dell Streak only $.01 for AT&T upgrade on amazonwireless

Just ordered this yesterday for a whopping $.01 with my AT&T upgrade I've been sitting on..... can't wait to get it
I was trying to decide if I wanted to get the HTC Inspire 4G or not but when I saw this I couldn't pass it up....
Just thought I'd let everyone know...

Great deal, I thought $49 at best buy when I got mine was a good deal. I came from an iPhone 4 also, I used iPhones since 2007 and got really bored. For the techy types android wins hands down. I havent even touched my iPad since I got the streak..

Thats very good choice. I was going to go with the atrix or inspire back when I was upgrading too, and got the DELL Streak instead and love it.
Question- I have a second line on a fam plan with unlimited sms ,MEDIA msg etc. how do we not get charged for keeping the same plan? Im ordering one now but it wont let me disassociate the plan and charges.

According to amazon wireless, anything that is added on the plan side of things is only THAT LINE specific and anything that is defined under the family plan umbrella is unaffected.... In my case, I was upgrading my 2nd line in my Family plan (which is currently a captivate with the $25/mo data plan) and when I "add" the $25/mo data plan via amazon wireless for the new phone - it will just cancel out the existing data plan and "institute" the new data plan - WITHOUT touching the already existing unlimited text messaging that comes from the family plan umbrella.... if that line DIDN'T have a data plan before, IT WILL NOW! (mine did)
Does that make sense?... reading back over it I'm getting confused! LOL

For family plan with all Ur old stuff just call att they'll put t back to Ur original plan that's what I had to do

is there any difference between the unlocked version and the att version? I have an order for that $200 unlocked streak but it's taking a while to ship. The reason why i would want the unlocked one is that I would not have to pay for the data correct? Or are they going to force me to be on a data? I have had the tilt 2 since release and haven't been forced on a data plan yet.

I was very tempted to go for the $.01 deal but opted for the local Best Buy's $49 Streak. Good thing too because the first one I walked out the door with was DOA. Returned it the next day for another and love it (coming from a stolen iPhone 4).
The Amazon thing was a little dodgy about returning and/or canceling the service and if you would have to pay back the 'equipment credit' if you did cancel/return it. Sometimes it's good to have a local store to return stuff to and ***** at.

I debated between the Streak and the Galaxy Tab for a while, then I bought a Galaxy Tab through T-Mobile with hopes of getting voice capabilities one day. I should have gone with my instinct and just bought the streak. Now I have an iphone 3g and a tab, but I see I can upgrade it for $0.01. It's hard to argue with that!!! My questions is, if I do buy the streak through Amazon Wireless, can I keep my unlimited data? I see they have a bunch of garbage plans that charge an arm and a leg for data.

You should probably just try it through Amazon and see. Nothing is going to change until you finalize the transaction. Walk through and see if keeping your unlimited plan is an option provided.

I'm not sure but I thought the unlimited plan is/was only available with the iphone. You might want to call att and get a salesperson on the horn

In all honesty I purchased the INSPIRE its nice but for some reason I saw myself going back to the streak so many times I was just used to the 5 inch screen. A lot of people will say to you the sell streak is crazy big but once you start to use it and work on it you will never go back to a smaller screen. I ended up selling m inspire for 300.

Aslong as kids don't steal I wont have to invoice for a replacement. its simple and done often. But if it makes any difference other forums of the pc Overclocking type have buy/sell/trade what's the difference between rent/temporary selling?

It's a rental to activate your SIM card for the unlimited data plan. You're simply renting the 2G iPhone to get the unlimited data plan.
I see where you're coming from OP, but if you don't have a high down payment, you may not see your phone again.

..... and i thought the difference between buy/sell/trade and rent/temporary sell were pretty clear cut.
Buy: purchase item from seller to take ownership
Sell: sell item to interested buyer to make money
Trade: exchange goods you don't need for something you do need
and
Rent: loan to interested party with the promise of it being returned
Temporary sell: ...... rent?
I don't think i've ever seen a hardware rental topic in a PC hardware forum. I know people sometimes will send the hardware to you before you pay just so you can make sure you're not gonna get screwed over, with the expectancy of being paid if satisfied. It's happened to me. Bought a GTX 570 off of someone from Guru3D. So far paid for half of it, and will be paying the second half this week. Wouldn't exactly call that a "rental" though.

You don't need to rent to do it, I didnt even have iphone 2g and I got unlimited data with modification of original idea by thinking out of the box

do that many people not have unlimited data that there is a need for this? I know I have unlimited for my phone. When I got the atrix they tried to put me on the pay for data plan but all I did was ask to be grandfathered in from my old unlimited data plan and they carried it over to the atrix.

BTW - I pm'd you, I'm down for the rental. I desperately need to get my Inspire on an unlimited plan.

I found a iPhone 2g imie on internet, example is eBay, I called customer care told them I wanted to use it and asked for correct data plan for it then I had a retailer change it back to atrix with unlimited data but I forget to have them put imie back on and only got 3g unlimited til I had them correct imie then they switch it to 4g unlimited. I get no BS like u get from customer care about not wanting you to keep it

this is sad that people have to go through this to get unlimited data.. to switch to my atrix my phones on hold and at&t had to submit and inquiry to that department to switch the phone back to unlimited. so when i get my atrix im gonna have to be prorated for my 2gb data plan for 48-72 hours before I get my unlimited back o.o FAIL.

Hmmm I might try this. How much was the iPhone 2G imei on eBay and did customer care give you any other options for the data plan, meaning is there no way they can deny you from the unlimited plan?

How to get AT&T Unlimited Data Plan back

Yes it is true, I was able to get my unlimited data plan back within 24 hours. I ended up buying a $ 150.00 Iphone 2g to get me to unlimited 2g data + 200 text msgs that i eventually grandfathered to smartphone personal unlimited data. I bought the Iphone 2G yesterday around 4 PM, inserted the sim and activated it around 5 PM, called 611 around 9 am this day, took only 15 mins more or less for the first CSR that I talked to set it up. I just told her that I am planning to use a Dell Streak Smart Phone and would like to keep the unlimited data plan and she told me that she could do that and would let me grandfather the unlimited data plan for Iphone 2g. Here is what you need to do. (I do not take credit for this, credit goes to WonderBread from XDA Motorolla Atrix forum). If anyone interested in purchasing my Iphone 2G to get unlimited data too, just pm me. Here goes..
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2) Hard reset the iphone, put in your simcard, and register the iPhone 2G in iTunes. You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Find a CSR that will change your Iphone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
NOTE: Whatever you do DO NOT let them change your data plan off the iPhone data plan. If you lose that plan you need a new simcard and to start over. I think I may have had more difficulties cause I am on a business account, but it still worked! - WonderBread

People already replied in the original thread that it does work. No need to do it again here..

I got mine back a few months back. I just gave them the imei number from my brother old iphone 3g and they put me back on unlimited. I didnt even have to put a sim card in. I was on my dell streak when I asked, turned the phone off and when it powered back on, I was on unlimited data.

Yes, that was before, but they no longer offer unlimited data plan these days. It will no longer work for 3g or 3gs iphone or other smarphones unless you grandfathered your unlimited data + 200 msgs using iphone 2g. Better take advantage while it lasts.

So after him being on the phone with AT&T, for about thirty minutes I kept my unlimited plan and soon as I left there I went to AT&T who was next door and had them print me out a copy of my plan that said I was "grandfathered" in.

exact same thing happened with me, except I knew I read somewhere I could keep the unlmitied plan, so I made them get level 3 Customer Service on the phone, about 2 hrs later in Best Buy I walked out activated, unlimited plan in tact. I told them I was sure that we had the option to keep it, and I would not buy the phone otherwise.

This "trick" has been around for many months and have been discussed to death all over the interwebz. I am surprised AT&T hasn't closed this loophole just yet.

I already had unlimited data grandfathered in from my previous device. when i ordered the streak online, during the At&t registration/activation, i just didn't select a data plan and kept my unlimited.
This is a cool trick for those that are new customers and didn't have the chance to buy the unlimited when it was available. And for those that previously lost unlimited and where downgraded to one of the 2/4gb plans.

It should work.

They do a system sweep and the system will pick up on the devices that is being used. and it will automatically add the 2GB or 200 MB data feature.

That is why you need to call 611 after sometime a day perhaps and ask if you could grandfather the plan on your dell streak before you put your sim card on your streak. That is how you do it. You do not just stick it on the streak after setting it up on the iphone 2g.

DVP AT&T and medianet data plan

Can i keep the medianet data plan if i buy the phone unlocked from dell? I currently using it on my Bell Desire Z. If i buy the at&t DVP unlocked, will i be able to keep the plan? Did anyone try this?

On my wife's DVP, I bought it subsidized from Dell for AT&T and they switched her $10 dumbphone plan she was using on her Pixi to the Smartphone plan since I had to pick the plan when buying the phone. Once AT&T switched it in their system, I called and switched the IMEI on the billing system from the DVP to a dumbphone IMEI. Then I logged into OLAM and picked the $10 unlimited family data plan again and it has been on that for a month with no issues. The OLAM system still shows the phone on her line as a SE z520a instead of the DVP, so it would seem that they do not pick up the phone type automatically on the DVP like they do with other phones.
Because of the above, I would assume that buying unlocked and using the old MediaNet plan would work without issue...

Has anyone else tried this? I too have a Bell Desire Z that I use on AT&T but this phone has had my interest ever since I saw it in the Microsoft Store last November.
There is a great sale on eBay: Unlocked 16GB brand new for $299 either version (AT&T or T-Mobile) and I'm really considering getting it if I can keep my cheap data plan...
Edit: Looks like it is this price on Dell.com, too.

I'm not sure if this answers your question but I purchased a DVP locked to T-Mobile and unlocked it through dells unlock code request email service. I have been using the phone since the beginning of April on AT&T. AT&T does not recognize my DVP's IMEI # as a smartphone number and allowed me to purchase the unlimited *EDGE* data plan for $10 a month. If you don't mind slightly longer load times for youtube videos and longer download times for apps, I would recommend it. As for reception and call quality, I can't tell the difference and I've never had issues. Not a bad deal!

UPDATE: Yesterday, AT&T sent a sms and email saying they were changing my wife's line back to the $25 plan....oh well.

Darn. I was really considering the phone, now that I know I'll be switched to the $25 data plan, I won't be getting it. $300 is a steal for it, though. The only thing I wish it had was 512MB RAM. I can't believe they skimped on such a cheap component.

The ram bug was fixed in newer firmware. It does have 512 ram. I ordered one anyway, since I don't use over 2gb anyway.

I just bought an unlocked Dell Venue with AT&T bands, and AT&T replaced my $15 medianet unlimited plan with a 2gb smartphone plan. They must have all the IMEI numbers now. Lesson learned.. don't buy unlocked phones from a mfg that also offer them with a contract.

Oh I thought there physically was only 256MB in the device. I guess not. Still though, I wanted to get one to play with and see how I like WP7, but if it means I'm going to lose my $10 data plan I won't be doing that. Maybe if that new Galaxy S 2 slider comes out on AT&T next month and I'm forced to get the new data plan, I could pick one of these up, too.

Its probably an at&t (greedy bastards!) thing. I have a DVP on T-Mobile and still have my GF'ed $19.99 data plan, no trying to get me on the higher priced data plans.
