Vibrant Will Get Froyo Tomorrow - Maybe Fascinates Will Too? - Fascinate General

According to engadget the Vibrant's getting Froyo tomorrow. Maybe this means we'll get it too?

No... for one that is T-Mobile which is completely unrelated to Verizon. The Vibrant is a different phone requiring a different ROM.
If they were releasing it for more phones than the Vibrant they definitely wouldn't keep quiet about it.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/samsung-vibrant-will-get-froyo-tomorrow-says-t-mobile-cmo/
It definitely doesn't mean or even suggest we'll get it tomorrow, since each carrier is ultimately responsible for releasing the update. But it certainly bodes well for a release that could be sooner rather than later.

Seems like all the bad press is starting to get to Samsung. Also a report that the Mesmerize will get froyo in early feb, which should at least get the devs a proper froyo kernel to use rather than hacked up eclair kernels.

It's not the fascinate, but if it happens it can only be good news for us!

I'm hoping that T-Mobile's release will move Verizon to get off its ass and give us Froyo.

All it took was a class action lawsuit. Lets get this ball rolling.

From Sprints twitter feed.
Epic 4G users: Froyo is still in the works. We’re working closely with @SamsungMobileUS to ensure the best possible customer experience.
Sprint & Samsung are working to release Froyo for Epic ASAP, but only after it meets rigorous testing criteria to ensure quality experience.
Now just waiting to hear from VZW about Froyo.

Hasn't it always been coming asap? That doesn't really prove anything, and Sprint only said that to avoid any negative rep for T-Mobile beating them to the punch.

no doubt it has... just pointing out that it seems like the others might be starting to come out of their shells again

Hey guys I own a vibrant and I'm just here to give encouragement. You have to get mad. Get involved. Make your voice heard. We did it over in the vibrant section, start a twitter feed, spam the hell out of verizon. Apply pressure. We we're lucky to have leaked froyo builds for months, it doesn't seem like you are so lucky. Good luck GS bros!

Would it be the wrong time to mention the vibrant had froyo leaks for months before this supposed not yet here date? If fascinate follows that timeline, I wouldn't expect OTA froyo before mid-summer at the earliest. Forget OEM, donate to the devs that actually care how the phone works.

It seems TMO/Samsung cracked under the pressure. But knowing VZ, we still won't officially have it for awhile.

Based on the reply I got from Samsung I think this could mean Verizon will get Froyo soon. The Samsung rep said they were testing for instability on all the U.S. Galaxy S phones and once they can confirm it is stable they will start rolling it out to the carriers.
Dear Mr. ******,
Thank you for your inquiry. We do apologize for the inconvenience. Gingerbread is what we all should want but.......

Being a previous samsung owner (behold 2) I don't think that the first galaxy s line will get it. Why??? Cause samsung is already in the process of making a second galaxy s line. Just like in the armed forces how they send out the army first(vibrant, epic, captivate) then the navy, then air forces. Well that's what samsung is doing. If you think I'm just spitting out bull check out the new galaxy s phone sprint is about to get. It is keyboard less and is coming out months after the epic 4g. Why would they need 2 galaxy s phones when they already have 1 with a keyboard and an evo???
I truly think we are gonna get froyo in october but nothing after that. I'm not mad though I'm just gonna get a g2 but this is crazy how phone companies operate these days all due to android fragmentation.

Meh, the dev scene should be fully up and running by that point. Personally at that point I couldn't care less if Samsung doesn't update.
They've already proven that they don't give a **** about their appearance in the world (really, you ship a broken phone to four carriers in the US and to ~30 other countries around the world and expect anyone to take you seriously), so let them continue to shoot themselves in the foot.

And a HUGE boo hoo back at the 4 crybabies above this post.
Samsung is building a reputation of not supporting their products after the sale.
This is something the community needs to be kept aware of so other people don't make the mistake of buying their hardware with its good looking specs.
I'm fed up with companies releasing product (or more like the product escaping) before it is finished as well.
And as a final comment to the 4 whiners above, if you don't like this thread no one forced you to read it. Do something productive and contribute to the community, even if it is just a warning to future buyers not to buy from a given company instead of trying to tear down what someone else is doing.

Samsung Pulls Android 2.2 Update for Vibrant

Just read this on phandroid.com.
Samsung is no longer offering the Froyo update to via Kies (this was only available to Bell customers anyway?)
According to Samsung's facebook page:
"We are continuing to investigate issues that some users have reported while completing the upgrade to Android 2.2. In the interim, we are taking the extra precaution of temporarily suspending the upgrade as a download from Kies. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that clients contact 1-800-751-4078 or [email protected] if they have any further questions."
I think this news means a few things:
1. Since the release in Canada was going to precede the US release, we have a while to wait before any hopes of an official Froyo release for the vibrant.
2. Since Samsung pulled the plug in Canada, it is a safe conclusion that Samsung is responsible for the delay we are experiencing in the USA, not T-Mobile.
3. We should petition T-Mobile to take matters into their own hands because Samsung has failed us. As T-Mobile customers, we deserve to get what we were sold. When we bought our Vibrants, we were sold a smartphone that was capable of being officially updated to Froyo, and within at least a "reasonable" time-frame.
4. In the petition, we should suggest that T-Mobile release a vanilla Froyo or Gingerbread update for our Vibrants, which their engineers could pull-off by adapting the Nexus S rom.
I am setting up the online petition right now. Any suggestions as to details I should include in the petition? I'll post a link when it is ready.
Lol, you're wasting your time.

Samsung software support is losing right now. HTC and Motorola manage to successfully roll out updates across multiple carriers. Samsung can't even manage 1.

Its good to get your news from multiple sources.
Though I would be curious to know the build number of their 2.2 update, I wouldn't be surprised if it was different from ours, as I'm sure the model number of the Tmo Vibrant is different from theirs, as well as other regional carriers. Remember Kies does things based off of the model number.
unfortunately, your cries fall upon deaf ears..
yeah, samsung software support sucks. the intercept or whatever the crap it is on sprint just got 2.2.
oh well, just do it yourself. it's so easy, and the custom roms are 10x better anyway
but i understand the frustration
Support your own phone then lol. Screw samsung. Let it be your last samsung but don't just let it be broken, fix it. There's ROMS out there that work, and work well. Foyo has been out for the vibrant for what almost 2 months now?
I'm as mad about Samsung's service as the next person but we obviously aren't getting anywhere harrassing them on facebook/twitter or calling support. Like Jae said, it falls on def ears.
SamSUCK
I really can't believe this. This is ****ing ridiculous! I'm mad for you guys. So glad I exchanged my Vibrant for a MyTouch 4G. I can't believe Google would contract a company like SamSUCK to make a dev phone for them. Why couldn't they stick with HTC. They make good solid hardware, they actually support the devices they make.
I fell in love with the Vibrant at first (due to the screen of course) but I just couldn't take the GPS problems, the lag, retarded file system, lack of Froyo, TouchWiz, no front facing camera, no flash, no LED indicator lights, cheap plastic build. I should have known better but I absoutely loved that screen and even my iPhone 4 friends were impressed.
I just couldn't take it anymore. My friend introduced me to this forum, installed ROMs for me which were bug filled, MMS didnt work right on some of them, the pics came in blurry, the GPS was still not good, etc. It was hard for me to do but I took a deep breath and said, F*CK YOU SAMSUCK! Seeing a friends unrooted MT4G getting 1900+ on Quadrant was the last straw. I really tried so hard to like my phone but it was time to give up on SamSUCK. They just don't support their hardware. If you want an Android device, stick with HTC or a phone that runs simply stock. Lesson learned. Samsuck always falls short. Look at the Nexus S. No microSD, no HD recording, no HSPA+. Is this what Google calls revolutionary?? What are you ****ing kidding me?? Typical SamSUCK. HTC would have never done some **** like that. FAIL

Samsung Holding Back Froyo!

AndroidSpin and BGR are reporting that a reliable T-Mobile Source told them that there is a fully functioning 2.2 OTA for the T-Mobile Vibrant, but that Samsung is holding the OTA back. The report then says that Samsung fears that if the OTA is released then this would devalue the upcoming T-Mobile Vibrant 4G. (I would post a link, but I do not have 8 post. If someone could for me that would be great.) Now, I know that the hardware is different, but does anyone think that Samsung may be doing the same thing to us fascinate users considering that a new Samsung LTE phone is coming out soon? This would make sense condersidering the Telus fascinate got 2.2 before we did. Now again I know the hardware is different, but it doesn't make sense they would get it before us considering the fascinate has been out longer for us and that they are more of us. It would also explain the DL09 release. Samsung may just be trying to hold us over until they decide to release 2.2 once the LTE phone sales are up. This is just something to think about. I personally am just going to flash Kaos's 2.2 once the data works

That is complete and total crap..... they shouldn't be holding back Froyo just to "improve" sales of the Vibrant 4g... the 4g should make enough incentive if someone really wants the 4g version of the phone. Also, isn't it a little early to be releasing a 4g phone when it is just now becoming available? I could be wrong!?!?!?

T-Mobile has had their "4G" out for some time now. Not quite as long as Sprint, but it's been around for a few months at least.
Just some more information. The Samsung LTE phone is suppose to hit Verizon in February. There are a few Samsung Galaxy S phones rumored to be getting froyo in March. This would leave a month for 3g galaxy s phones to still be on 2.1 while the new phones are on 2.2 or 2.3.
So the samsung LTE is probably to complete with the Iphone release 2/10/2011?
Seems totally non-bogus to me. If they already have working builds of froyo on the Galaxy Tab and 4G phones, which all contain pretty similar hardware, it's no doubt that Samsung has working froyo builds for the Fascinate.
It makes perfect sense in regards to their effed up strategy plan of continuing the release of updated phones but delaying software updates on already released ones. It's clear that these guys are holding back the 2.2 update on our device so that they can make more sales on the upcoming devices.
To be honest, it's not that my fascinate doesn't already do what I need it to do or gives me certain issues on its current software, but I just can't stay loyal to a company that continues to disregard their customers' concerns.

My sentiments exactly. The question is, will this rumor affect their timetables? This whole thing is so political...
I don't buy it. The draw of the new phones is 4G, or LTE, not the version of Android it's running. The fact that it's running 2.2 wouldn't sway someone to buy one phone over the other for the general consumer. And that is the market that matters most to the manufacturers. To the more advanced users it might make a difference, but they make up a very small percentage.
Doesn't hold weight in my opinion.

Its a bullet point. Since Samsung did not opt to be part of the droid line on verizon, any additional bullet points adds to the selling factor of the phone. Sales people will use this to push people to the newer phones, saying things like "Its got the latest Android 2.2" or "It has the version of Android that supports flash". Its just in poor taste for Samsung to do this, and to me, its the same with Apple releasing the same iPhone for verizon that's been on at&t for 7 months or so now. I wouldn't get an iphone until after there announcement later this year, because since 2008, they have released a new iphone every year. Ok, sorry, I got off topic, but as you can see other companies do similar things just to sell more phones. Looking at all the companies with android smartphones, HTC and MOTO have done good jobs keep their android phones up to date. Samsung needs to step it up.
If said source is referring to JL5, there is a reason they are holding it back...its a piece of garbage.

Count me as skeptical, the source seems contradicts himself, unless I'm misreading:

Still, who knows. It wouldn't surprise me if they scheduled the update to be closer to the release date (VZW released 5.0 for the Storm 1 a day or two before the Storm 2 went on sale). If it does exist, and isn't a POS, it will probably get leaked.
I can see this, but it is stupid as the LTE feature alone should be enough to push people to upgrade. Additionally, those with Galaxy S phones have all had them for less than two years (typical upgrade timeframe). So how many people do they really think they can pursued to switch? Seems far more harmful to continue to piss off your existing user base who might consider later LTE phones at end of year or next when upgrade option is available.
I don't think they want to try and get people to switch. Its more for new sales. If the vibrant is sitting there for half the price (galaxy S phones are reaching the discounted portion of their lifespan) running nearly the same specs, minus the 4G, it will look pretty attractive to a decent chunck of consumers. If salesmen can say "this new one is faster and has a newer operating system" most people will think "new MUST be better" and blindly go for that.
Like someone else already said, it would just be a bullet point for salesmen.
from a business point of view, samsung did the right thing. Why fix what isn't broke, while making something in the future look much more desirable. They will make most of their money this way.
Honestly, the dev community is a very very VERY small portion of their clients. A couple thousand out of however many million phones they've sold... Most people are perfectly happy living in ignorance about all these damn desert names. ESPECIALLY now that they have a working GPS on the phone.
So why please a couple thousand, when they could be making millions on future phones?
Unfortunately for us, this blows! But they are a business. Businesses lie. ultimate goal is to make the dough...

The reason is the Galaxy S is already end of life.

So samsung addressed the rumor mill about samsung wanting to charge for 2.2 development and deployment, saying it's false. Now that seems plausible, because they aren't even doing anything with 2.2 for the Galaxy S... all development energy is behind the new hardware to be launched in February.

I check back here and poke through Google News 'Samsung Fascinate' searches pretty much daily and at this point, I'm pretty sure we're one of, if not THE last Galaxy S phone, to be on 2.1. At this point, we just have to laugh about it, right? Then I read articles like this and it makes me remember the angry "WTF " feeling... but what's the point in being pissed off. It'll get here when it gets here, right?
We don't need Verizon anymore. The Mesmerize's code is compatible enough with the Fasicnate that we don't need an official release... plus, their source is already out. Hell, we've been using their leaked kernels for a while now (EB16 and EC10 are both mez kernels).
Us Continuum users are still on 2.1

Adryn said he will work on Continuum, but not sure when.
Well, not to lessen the Continuum state, but you guys do have that funky Ticker thing with all of it's own settings I can actually understand something like that holding up the Verizon/Samsung ability to push out an update. But the Fascinate?
It's just mind-blowing that two multi-billion dollar companies are such a miserable failure in this department. The Froyo SDK came out over 10 months ago. Some team, some where, should've lost their jobs ages ago and been replaced with competent individuals.
Ok, back to laughing
True.. its gotten to the point of being so ridiculous that I really do almost laugh out loud at the whole thing these days. Still though I do feel extremely frustrated at the fact that the two big companies involved just seem to refuse to give a straight answer regarding an update - if an update is coming out for sure.. ETA.. status.. etc.. That part of it just drives me crazy.
Very true. I am waiting and hoping for ASOP or MIUI to be fully functional now.
So why the hell did Samsung drop this phone, essentially, and all the other phones are fine? This is a great phone.
Samsung Fascinate, Verizon
EB01 Superclean 2.4
Kenesis' TransMyst GBKB (EPIIIIIC)
Mob87's Honeycomb Theme
Stock Kernel
If you didn't notice the froyo versions that leaked have all had their own issues and caveats. Knowing Verizon, they would never allow a release of flawed software so I refuse to be angry about the lack of an official release. Those of us knowledgeable enough and willing to tolerate have been using it for months and with Kaos, Adryn, JT and our other AMAZING Fascinate devs we will have GB, MIUI and AOSP as well as all the wicked kernels we could possibly want ahead of anything we would ever get from sammy. I always put my faith in these ambitious and innovative people over some billion dollar team that never faces us.

I gotta say I released a bit of a chuckle when I saw on Twitter that Samsung released Froyo for the Mesmerize the other day. I was like, "The MESMERIZE? REALLY?"
But oh well.

I'm not one to correct, but wasn't the next to last official VZW release the one with the 911 puzzle lock bug? VZW has always been a pain in the butt for updates, but never, NEVER, this nad. IMO, this all falls on Samsung and their incompetence. I get done what I need done just fine from my SC 2.9.2 and stopped waiting for anything official a long time ago. All owning the fascinatehad done is solidify the fact that Sammy won't get another dime of mine. What actually makes me laugh is the BS that Samsung PR puts on here to attempt to make users happy.
From what I understand, Samsung has already released the update to Verizon, but it didn't have Bing integrated...so then Verizon's one guy in some back room closet has to integrate Bing before they can release it. Of course, any dev on here could do that in a day....
I wouldn't go stock if they did release it. I am digging Launcher Pro on SC 2.9.2 Voodoo. I have my wifi hotspot and google and NO VZW crap. Everything on my phone is working better than before and I have no lag, waits or FC. I honestly don't mind the UI of touchwiz but the implementation is piss poor in the quality department and I don't expect that to change with the next rev. I'm a happy man going to save a few duckets for Adryn he is a deserving soul.
Yep I'm with Joey - at this point even if they do come out with an official release, I dont think I could go back to a stock 'bloat rom' after trying out a rooted phone with a fast cool SC-Voodoo setup developed here by the dev community. AWESOME!
running DR v3 voodoo
EC10v
launcher pro plus
loaded the apk's that i like
battery life is good / to GREAT
Samsung / Verizon = i will be voting with my money when it comes time to upgrading my phone & service
because of leaks i am currently happy with my Fascinate
Imo I would say this definetly falls on samsung and verizon not giving the ok on an update that would have its own issues. Ive never been a fan of samsungs touch wiz interface, but I think this is a really good example of phone makers tweaks on android really effecting users getting to experience there devices as they should. Sammy has always been little slow on updates to there phones. Love there displays and there TVs are the best. I just wish they would pay as much attention to devices already launched as they do pushing out new devices. Seeing that droid x is on the verge of getting gingerbread it makes me sick thinking that fascinate is still on froyo. I keep.secretly hoping that thsy will surprise us all and just skip froyo with the vzw update and push out gingerbread for it. If they do.end up putting a froyo update out for the fascinate I guess a gingerbread update would be out of the question because who knows how lonh that would take
Samsung , has a bunch of bs programers, and poor project management. If our devs out code theirs, why haven't they been hired? Because, they'd have to eat humble pie. My guess, is that if you paid close enough attention, you find that samsung borrowed quite a bit of code from our devs. Why else would they "leak" code? They are having problems solving their own, self made hacks of miss placed code and purpose built convolutedness, so why not get someone else to fix it for free.
Just my 2¢

And now the Intercept. Against, I don't know if it's Verizon or Samsung, but at this rate I'm leaning towards Verizon being the weak link here.
Must... maintain... laughing...
At this stage, it really doesn't much matter who's to blame. We'll never know whole truth and nothing but the truth. All I can say is TY to XDA and their team!!

Far as I've seen, it's looking like they're being held back by Verizon and Bing stupidity as much as Samsung amd Verizon.
