I think I want to try to make a mobile game.
I made a browser game a while ago for a collage class that was very similar to kingdom of loathing. I want to port this to more of a "web app" style to be multi platform for mobile phones.
I'm not asking questions on coding specific questions, though I do need to know, other then the web development code (html, php, database(sql, mysql), javascript that I either know or have enough basic knowledge and reference material to make good use of, what other languages should I know.
So thats question one, will I really need to delve down into java to be able to make a web app game for android (iphone, winmo, etc maybe)
Secondly, when writing, should I get a browser version of the game working first, and then port it, or should I start mobile from the ground up?
If I posted this in the wrong section or If I'm completely in the wrong frame of mind here let me know.
Your question is not very clear. Are you planning to make a web app or an android app? Because they are two different things for me.
Sorry about that
I guess both, A game that you can play from a web browser but also android... Though I've started to actually answer my own question...
And an example of a similar concept is with facebook.
There is facebook for web browser, but there is also a mobile app.
What I need to do is develop an API for the game and be able to show it on both.
hmm. actually facebook is an application not a game so this is not related with your concept but you can make a game application and create a web based game istatistic page.
or you can create android game and create a web page which include episode tricks or riddles. when you get true answers from user then you can switch him/ her to new episode. etc.
i just want to give you an idea in order to use them together.

I got the idea to make a application finder software for Windows Mobile. Specially designed to HTC Diamond, with many G-apps & games and other nice apps. It's under development now, and i will release one screenshot for you.
This app will not be just an styled IE-frame, like many "appstore" like apps that have been released before.
19. October 2008:
New Screenshot of the start screen.
Development stopped, becouse of the Gecko project.
I think this is a phenominal idea. The idea that went around recently was an internet based solution through ie explorer and it just was not device friendly. To have a device based solution is much more sensable. If you could create a server that developers could upload their most recent programs too that would be the best.
Maybe contact the system admin on this site and see if he will give your program to access the sites FTP server or something. Then a user could use your device based program that would seemlessly connect to the interenet in the back ground, poll the server for software, sort it and place it into a thumb friendly interface on the phone by which it could be sorted into categories of games, utilities, themes, programs etc etc....
Of course the admin would have to create those categories on the site's side and the developers would need to upload their program to the correct one but I think everyone has been in such a need for this that they would be willing to do it without much arm twisting.
Or, you could create device user interface that interacts with Orb.com... But then you would have to get the updates of programs and upload them to ORB for your program to work. But ORB does already have a sorting feature that your user controls on the device could be made to access for sorting etc. It even has a video section that a user could download tutorials of different programs that someone took time to make.
All just ideas. Some you may find good or not. I am excited to see a device based program though. It make user intereaction easier.

yes
Its a good idea, keep working on it
seems to be a nice idea
I like the idea but this really depends on what will be offered / how updated the actual site behind the store application is. Have you had any thoughts on that yet?
i second that.
at this time i browse via opera tho xda to download stuff... but having a app that simplifies things would be even better...
maybe all the downloads here could be managed and put upto "youre" server in an automated way..
I remember seeing this article a few weeks ago about Microsoft creating their own app store.
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/n.../job-advert-reveals-microsoft-skymarket.phtml
Either way, it's certainly a good idea!!
I forward the notion. An app that has all the apps at hand for easy download by category would kick some serious asss..
If I can help in any way let me know.
Greetings to all.
Love this development. Maybe this progress will open up eyes on new skilful programmers and we will see an increase of good looking apps and games. Not that I don't just love the things going on here at xda. But the more the merrier, right? The only complaint that I might have on this forum is the all the threads with wallpapers and especially the ones with half-naked women...But that's me...
So an app store (or two) is going to make it easier for us to sort out what we are interested in and only that.
If needed count me in I can help develop..
Great idea.
In the spirit of AppToDate, which I found worked very very well. But with YouTube-app like interface, all connected to database were latest apps can get installed.
Great idea!
I'm working to figure out how to connect to MySQL from a windows mobile based device, does anyone here know?
double post****
i think if these two threads could be incorporated
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=428480
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433913
that would be a good way to do storage
each developer could use have there own account and then whenever they updated there app they update the wapps link via web or give it like some type of flash capabilities that would be really great
or there could be a generic account that ever one uses to upload too
looks like this is in the works http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436127
maybe some collabo might be nice
Nice project!! GoOd Luck!!
If there was a way to advertise this app when it gets made. the diamond would sell millions
Why not just modify a RSS feed reader?

Maybe Sqlite is more accurate for a mobile device ?
And you just download the sqlite file available on a server, this way requests would be very fast.

Yes, every time you start it will update from the web or you can click on a button to update (or an 'update every x minutes' function
please keep up the hard work!!!!! love to see this appstore happen!
Hi
I see a few threads of people developing an appstore alike program for the diamonds and other devices.
They all seem a lil bit too over the top. So, iv begun an online AppStore clone. No windows coding, no programs, just an online website, optimised for diamonds (to begin with) that lists apps by genre.
This way, developers can upload thier own apps, the website can host them, people can subscribe to the apps and recieve updates when the developer adds new files etc.
Iv even started playing with notifying subscribers via SMS when a new program becomes available from a developer.
As opera is so good, flick scrolling, fullscreen, etc, an optimised webpage should pretty much be able to do alot, if not all, of the things any windows program can do and would involve no installs and be very lightwieght..
So before, i go too far into this thing, id love to know your thoughts on this, is it worth developing further?
Hello
I think that having several projects around one theme is an excellent thing because it leads to better results.
So, yes, you should continue on your project. Good cheer !
look forward to seeing it if you carry on the project
Exactly whats needed.

I've been using Eclipse to go through the tutorials on the main Android dev site and tbh it's all a bit too much and things don't work and I've no idea why. For example; I even ended up copying and pasting the example code for the grid view tutorial and even the code in the tutorial doesn't work.
I'm not a programmer really, I just dabble in PHP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML and I've done a bit of ASP and VB in the past.
But this is a whole step up and when these things go wrong I've no idea, at all, how to fix them. If there was a good Android programming book out there I'd get it but they all have terrible reviews.
So I'm going back to using App Inventor and tbh all I want is a tabbed layout, or a grid where you can select to go to a new screen. My app is mostly info and if I were writing this in JavaScript, CSS and HTML I could do it in a day. Ideally I'd have tabs, to choose a section, and then buttons on the tabbed pages to choose the info. Like a reference set I suppose.
I can't find any code examples for multiple screens so can anyone tell me how to simulate this with App Inventor?
If it were a webpage I'd just alter the visibility of divs and then have links within the divs. It's actually a very, very simple concept...
No one knows? Seriously?
The App Inventor doesn't allow for tabbed displays, and I haven't really seen a viable way to simulate tabs.
I would suggest using Titanium Appcelerator, you build the app in Javascript, through it's API, and it'll compile into a working Android app
There's a free version, and a Paid version, but really all you need is the freebie
PhoneGap and Corona are both cross platform mobile app development environments, but how do they do what they do?
Well I'm a PhoneGap Build user and I recently DLed the PhoneGap add-ons for my Eclipse dev environment. With PhoneGap you code your app in HTML5, CSSĀ£ and JavaScript and it turns it all into an Android app for you.
I think I've worked out that PhoneGap takes your web pages and just wraps them all up into what is essentially a stand-alone website that acts as an app.
It's a nice idea if you want apps that are purely information, like some of the medical apps for healthcare professionals, but it's not so nice for smoothness and transitions or even interface elements e.g. you can simulate a Tabbed layout but it's not as neat or a smooth as a real Eclipse coded Java-xml Android Tabbed layout.
PhoneGap can repackage your web "app" for iOS, Andoird, BlackBerry, Sybian and webOS! That's one big bonus.
Now does anyone know how Corona works? Seems it's only for iOS and Android and I'm wondering what the underlying structure is. Anyone know?
No one knows?
It's be useful for developers to have insight into this. Afaik Phone gap don't have this info in their docs, I've just worked it out.

Corona is more of a Game Engine I think
It's basically it's own API/SDK/Engine. You code works within that. It looks like it uses lua script but I'm not sure.
Phonegap and other cross platform tools
Hi pizza_alarm
There are basically 3 types of multi-platform approaches:
1) the super-simplistic. These are not really programming at all, but simple tools to auto-generate an app using rss feeds, and other fairly generic settings.
2) browser-hybrid. Most of the serious contenders would fit this category, even though some claim to be in the 3rd. They use html + css to describe page layout, and some (like phonegap) allow full access to any browser-supported scripting, like javascript. At build time, a pre-compiled "player app" is bundles with your web app
3) native compiler. These let you build your app in a intermediate coding language, which then gets recompiled for each platform. Many of these still use the techniques described in item 2.
We have recently published a free comparison between all the serious contenders (items 2 and 3 in my list). Tell us what you think:
(I don't have permission to post the URL - but if you google "triballabs cross platform" you will find it)
Sorry - I meant to add that we use phonegap. One of the bits we like most about it is that you get all the source code, so if you need to enhance the basic "player" app it is very easy to do. Obviously you need to code these native, in Java or Objective-C or whatever your platform calls for
I use Corona since 2013. I have made this game Stronghold. It's easy to use, but there is a lot of limit, no multi threading, few plugin, few quantity of documentation, the app always do imagesheet in 32bits. We have to pay for many things. Like remove the launcher image (actualy it's write corona sdk XD)
Ok so im planning to build my first ever app. Cant really tell what I'm going to make since there's too many 'Zuckerbergs' around Just kidding. This forum is AWESOME!
Ok so im currently learning JAVA. I have basic knowledge of C++ (I know how to build a basic caluclator, use loop functions etc). Im using the newboston tutorials as well as reading from a book called 'Head First Java'. Anyways, my app will be using multiplayer functionality and was wondering how to get that multiplayer function. Do I have to host my own server or can I use my own internet bandwidth (I have zero knowledge in netowrking).

It depends on what kind of multiplayer you want. Do you want real time multiplayer or turn based multiplayer?
Google just came out with Google Play Games which would help with turn based multiplayer. Real time multiplayer I can't help you much with as I haven't looked into it at all but I would imagine you would need a server to host it.
As you are just starting with android. I would prefer you to start by developing some basic apps first. WHen you get how it works then move on to other big things. Directly staring with multiplayer( I assume you are trying to make a game) , you wont be able to implement your ideas. So I would prefer you to get an android book foe beginners and start making small basic apps first then move on to more complex apps and then after that get android android book for learning Game Development and then move on to Game Development.
Thanks
