[Q] root with z4root - Droid Pro General

ok i have had a bb for years and went droid pro,i am usually fairly good at doin anything, but right now im stumped,im wanting wifi hotspot for 5 devices of course no charge.
1-i have loaded z4root
2-the superuser app is on there
3-got file explorer root
4-trying to gifigure out how to change the modem string to 1 for the wifi hotspot hack and thought file explorer root would write, but thats where im stuck at,i cant change the numbers in root explorer-am i missing something, thanks all you guys that are on here are the best.
also running 2.26.60 verizon
email me at we are expecting some major snow down here and i got a few things to do outside, but if i get a email ,snow or not, this ole droid pro will get fixed ,so i can let my daughter use her ipod touch off my wifi hotspot

Have you tried "wireless tether for root users" from the market?
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

yes,i really want to try and figure the hotspot out with some help,so i can connect more than one,but main problem i have right now is writing and changing files from 0 modem to 1 modem ,so then i can go in hidden service menu and fix number

Mdw has a flashable patch (I think it works for the dpro as well). It works great for me on my x.

Z4 root possible?

Has anyone tried to root using the z4 root app? Will it work?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Yea, I used a method listed here @ XDA to get S-Off and rooted when I had the Nov. Update before unrevoke's revisions. It used zroot to enable the process.

My friend (idiot couldnt wait for me to do it correctly) rooted his Droid X using Z4. Shortly after he discovered his Droid X wouldn't boot. Soft bricked Droid. Said friend orders another Droid X (warrenty) and still couldn't wait (till AFTER SCHOOL A MATTER OF HOURS!) to root and Z4'ed again. Another soft brick. He's on his 3rd Droid X, unrooted. I've refused to do so for him.
z4root by itself will not permanently root an incredible, it will give you temporary root till the next time you reboot. this information is available in the z4root thread. you might want to try posting this in the droid x forum if you want to know about z4root and a droid x .
Its the Inc that I'm concerned with, my wife's phone to be exact. I have the fascinate & I've rooted, de-binged & de- bloated and want to root her phone for wifi tethering. I used a 1-click root app on my Eris that worked well & was just wondering if something similar would work on this one.

The best way to get root on the Inc is to use Unrevoked 3.22. There is no one-click method like the Eris to gain permanent root. You will need to get adb (android-sdk) setup on your pc as well as get the correct usb drivers setup for this to work. The instructions are on Unrevoked's website.
While z4root is technically a one-click method it will only give you a temporary root that is lost every time the phone reboots and you have to re-root it. It can be useful if all you want to do is remove some of the crapware and thats it. I did use it to do just that with Titanium Backup Pro but had to re-root my phone about 16 times, re-install busy box each time and it became rather tedious and took a couple hours. Also I wouldn't recommend using it if your going to install a custom ROM or want to do other modding to the phone.
Edit: z4root does not put a custom recovery on the phone and you wouldn't be able to use it anyways if you did as root would be lost as soon as you tried to reboot into recovery. So you couldn't even install a custom ROM with it if you wanted to.
Revoked works. Instructions here. http://jonsuh.com/2010/11/root-your-droid-incredible-how-to/ if using windows, have fun downloading ext2 drivers, if using Linux/MAC, its very easy

Okay thanks for the info. My wife's is a slcd I believe so I think I'm going to try it.

Hero wireless tether problem.

Ok. My buddy at work has a hero running 2.1
I rooted his phone using the z4 root, installed recovery using rom manager.
main reason for wanting to root was to be able to use wireless tether, so I installed it but can't get it to work at all.
app starts fine but when you hit the button to start tethering it says its starting but it won't send or receive any info, and I can't detect it sending out any kind of wireless signal.
Thought busybox might be the issue so I installed the newest version from the market. 1.18.somethingsomething.
Didn't work, still nothing.
googled the issue I'm having and can't find a fix. I'm using the newest version from the market, even tried a old version 1.61 I believe.
I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help?

when you started the app did you get a window asking for superuser permissions? if not then you are not rooted. I know that some of the carriers recently pushed an OTA update that blocked z4root's rooting method.

yes, thanks for asking, i should have stated that in my original post. I apologize. currently i have adfree, root explorer, and titanium all running with no issues on his hero.
if your on a sense 2.1 rom you need to use wireless tether v1.6 from google code this is due to the kernal in sense 2.1 roms if your on 2.2 or above v2.7 should work on almost all computer os's except ubuntu 11.0.4 due to a kernal issue. but usb tether works fine on ubuntu. also u can try wireless tether pre 3.0.14 from google code witch will work on almost all roms except for kifno sense roms and liquid sense roms. just please make sure if your on a 2.1 sense rom be sure to go to settings settup mode and select hero cdma then go down to lan settings and enable routing fix for hero.

LOL....The Ad Hoc connection should still be present, just can't connect to the internet. I know this because I am a dope and always start my tether without starting my 3g and realize what I did when I can't open up a webpage. It's more then likely what Bierce was saying with the different Wireless Tether versions between 2.1 & 2.2 or a setting / script on the receiving device. With my Nook running CM7, by default it can connect to Ad Hoc, but running Honey Comb I have to change out the wifi supplicant to switch from infrastructure to Ad Hoc, and with my old iPaq I had to go into wireless / settings and enable Ad Hoc in the list of supported network types.

Wireless Tether and Official Gingerbread, does it work?

I'm running 2.2 Fission because Wireless Tether for Root Users still works (at least version 2.08-pre1 ***EXPERIMENTAL*** still does). I tried the GB leaks and various roms before coming back to 2.2 Fission because tether didn't work. Has anyone updated to 2.3 and had their tether work after rooting again?
Solution: The only thing I've found working is using the CM7 Rom and Barnacle.
I use ver. 2.0.5-pre14.apk and it works fine.
You've taken the official update that dropped yesterday and rooted? Not on a previous leak right?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I updated my Droid2 with yesterdays official verizon update Gingerbread 2.3.3 and wish I hadn't.
Wireless Tether now says Unable to start tethering. Is your device 'rooted'?
Still looking for some clarification on this as well. I know the new update can be rooted but my girlfriend currently uses EasyTether and I know that will be broken with the official, stock unrooted update. I'd like to see if there's a wired or wifi tether that is known to work on stock rooted software. I believe newer versions of Wifi Tether were tweaked to work on the Droid X with similar restrictions?
Try using ver 3.0

Verizon 3.0 works on official gingerbread?
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Are you using the official tether or a rooted free one? I use barnacle wifi tether and it's worked on every ROM I've used. Just confirmed it works on the OTA GB with CM7 from the latest nightly.
Dumb Question
Sorry if this is such a newb question.
My DROID2 is rooted, but this morning I updated with the official Verizon Gingerbread update. Now my Wireless Tether doesn't work with my Ipad anymore.
Do I need to re-root and then download a new wireless tether?
Thanks,

Can you be specific? What is not working about barnacle? Sometimes I have had to enable then disable wifi before using it because there can be an error where the wifi manager interferes. I just booted it up and it's working.

I read thru the solution you linked to and it seems to be for Droid 3 with Windows.
Is there a solution for just plain old Droid 2 (not global) and using a 2011 Macbook?
Doesn't seem the question has been answered definitively, and the thread is derailing into a how to obtain root. Yes, I'm refering to tethering like with wireless tether for root users, not mobile hotspot addon to your plan. I couldn't get tethering to work with the leaked, rooted versions of GB, as they seemed to have patched unauthorized tethering on those versions. I'm wondering if this is still true on the ota, or official, GB.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
The droid 3 one click root works for almost any motorola phone, including the unreleased bionic.
As for the platform, can't help you with a mac =(. Next time you're better off with a PC of some kind. Cheaper too.
Deciding to just throw caution into the wind, I Titanium Backup'd my apps, made a backup through Clockwork Mod, then wiped data and cache, then rebooted into stock recovery, wiped data and cache there, then rebooted holding the up button on the keyboard to get the bootloader, then SBF'd, then OTA'd the GB, then rooted using
http://www.psouza4.com/droid3/#root
Then installed
wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
from this site
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list
and got it to connect and transmit data, but got the verizon redirect everytime.
So I rebooted the phone, and bam it worked. Didn't change any frequency channel, just a reboot. It may be noted that my laptop couldn't connect to AndroidTether, but as soon as I changed the SSID to what I had it on my 2.2 Froyo Rom, it hooked up right away. However I wasn't able to recreate this success and after several hours of beating my head against the wall, I gave up and just went back to Fission 2.2 and stopped. Couple days later I SBF'd, retook the OTA, flashed CM7 and Barnacle seems to work.
Try barnacle tether, it's free and on the market (for those getting redirected)
EDIT: Confirmed with my laptop just now. Barnacle works great, does not redirect to any site at all.
I would try CM7, especially if you just got the OTA update. It's been getting rave reviews and is amazing on battery life. Droidforums has all the info.

[Q] z4 will not work please help

I purchased my DROID x around january 2011. First thing I did was install z4 root (not sure which version) and superuser. Also installed wireless tether from the market. Everything worked fine until the update was available. I went to my settings and updated without unrooting or changing anything. As soon as it was done updating I was no longer rooted. When I open z4 is says temp root, perm root and unroot. When I try to use tether it asks if my phone is rooted. When I try to hit perm or temp root z4 closes and I have to turn phone off and back on to even get it to open. I really want my tether back and I have no clue what to do.if I need to return phone completely stock please give instructions on that as well. Thanks
Z4root will not root the phone after the update to Gingerbread is taken; also, wireless tethering does not work on Gingerbread.
If you just want root, I recommend searching for 'PetesMotorolaPhoneTools', and using that to root your phone.
If you want to be able to tether then I recommend SBFing back to 2.3.34 and flashing either MIUI or a version of CM7 that uses the froyo kernel.

Tethering using apps such as Wireless Tether is blocked on Gingerbread; however, there is a patch for the 3G Mobile Hotspot, I believe that when you use it Verizon can track you though.
