Some would argue that going from N1 to SGS is a downgrade, but oh well I'd try to avoid doing any unofficial flashing for the moment until Froyo is officially released.

I went from a Nexus One to SGS, it is a bit of a downgrade firmware wise, but the screen on the SGS so much nicer, it's worth changing just for the screen.
Keeping in mind that pretty much everybody's is whining constantly about their rom versions, I would upgrade to JPK from 23 September '10 (yes the old and first "real" one) having OCLF over it, and am still pretty amazed by his responsiveness nd decent gps reception.(even playing with it just to see for myself how stable it is)
I have, since a couple of days, increased the minumum cpu to 200MHz for a bit more responce and it's working for me, one full day with a bit less then 2 hours of navigation will not be a problem with this setup.
Maybe and just maybe i'll update to an jpx rom when everybody is satisfied with it, .. hard time restoring hundreds of apps constantly
unless you're having a 'newer is better' mentality, you should go with the pack!
Thanks for the reply compulse, the main reason I would of wanted froyo was for the flash web browsing.
I like the desire hd aswell but the speaker is a bit crap and the screen is a bit washed out, im sure there's not much difference in screen size between the sgs or dhd

installed elements_zinc themed TYVM

I have had my Fascinate since the first week that it came out, came from a droid. In my opinion, out of the box fascinate is by far the biggest POS ever. But I got it for the hardware and the unlocked boot loader. SO I rooted it, replaced the launcher, installed clockwork and waited for custom ROMs. I did not (and have not) done the "lag fix" due to my (possibly incorrect) feeling that the risk/reward is too high.
Yesterday I installed Elements_Zinc_v1.0-themed
Nice, very nice.
Downloaded with ROM Manager, backed up, cleared cached.
First, it LOOKS nice, and thats important.
Second, its fast. My understanding is that the kernel is not over clocked, so it must just be the removal of all the crap.
To the developers: Thank you, so much. You have made the fascinate the phone that its capable of being, well done.
To other users: I suggest you do the same; install this package from ROM manager. I believe that you will not be disappointed.
Based on the excellent job that was done on this ROM, I am very much looking forward to a 2.2 kernel. Thank you again.
I agree 100%. I came from a d1 then d2 and bought this phone for the same reasons. I also would like to thank the dev community for all of their hard work and I can't wait until they get their hands on froyo to really bring out the potential this device has.

I agree.
I get SO tired of the "I didn't follow the directions, now my phone doesn't work, the dev sucks" posts. Really, be a grownup for Xenu's sake.
I waited a couple of months before installing my first ROM because I wanted YOU guys to test it (sorry, too busy to be a beta tester ) And its a great ROM, well worth the wait and the dev deserves all sorts of love for the hard work.

I am bored and I want to root my desire.... BUT?

Update: attempting root, flash etc... help a brother out, lol
I keep editing my last post for problems I am finding, thx
what i've seen so far are other way round, that is rooting could make you unable to get OTA updates..
you can find rooting guides and roms in development section

To the TS, there's a good sticky in the DHD Android Dev section, the very first thread by Ivo.. u should read that.

With the help of this forum, I did get into rooting my nexus one... and flashing often... but if someone could point me to a proper how to.... and a known solid rom/kernel....
I would appreciate it, thx in advance

this is quite OT, but I was wondering how come DHDs overclocked to 1.5Ghz can achieve 3k+ Quadrant scores but the G2 needs to be OCed to 1.8 or 1.9Ghz to achieve similar scores? The extra RAM of the DHD makes so much difference?
Well its a different processor, not just lower clocked.
I dont know the specs off the top of my head but i would guess it has smaller caches. That does make a difference. I doubt ram comes into it for most of the benchmarks.

thx for that, I had a brutal day at work... and then I had a very, very late "tour" at a correctional facility..... so i did not get to any of this. Hopefully tomorrow.... I absolutely love this phone and case..... my windows 7 phone came today... and wifi compared to wife.... the dhd destroys it.... not to mention... things look normal on the dhd... on the w7p, it looks like crap until you zoom in... I just wanted to try the phone for myself, lol
so for me, it all comes down to 2g vs 3g.... dhd is better has down, for many things and reasons..... but the 2g vs 3g is causing me turmoil... oh well, once I root and see the goodness... maybe it will be a much easier decision
brb almost done

Not going to lie, I had NO idea what I was doing... but I think I just stumbled through it all.....
are the kernels dangerous.... how can I test/check to see if it is worthwhile.... will they drain the battery even more so? thx
Depending what kernel and what clock speed you set, you should be able to underclock to around 700 +/- mhz and not have any noticeable slow downs.
Just make sure you set a lower speed when your screen is off and you battery will last upwards of 24 hours.
thx, I just that 1.51 one for now.... seems to be working well, I put a profile in for screen off.... dropping it to 256-756 or whatever it is! did some light benching, angry birds, no lag or issues so far.... woke up and the phone is still alive, lol
thx

[Q] getting my new wildfire on thursday!

Hi Guys
Getting my wildfire on thursday cant wait!
ive been reading the forums trying to get some ideas what i can do with it,
this is my first android phone.
I know i definately want to root it,
overclock it,
and try some custom roms...
Just a few noob questions if you dont mind....
Can any1 recommend a good rom to start with where everything works and not buggy.(i do like the look of wildpuzzle would this be a good choice?)
Will i have problems using the android market place, goole apps or be any other cons i need to know about?
What would be a safe speed to overclock to?
any other tips or tricks would be most appreciated
many thanks craig
The only thing i can say about The wildfire is that it is a really slow phone. Absolutely not for games. Before my desire i used my wildfire and wanted more speed it was my first android phone too, good starter. Have fun with ur wildfire.

First make sure it's still on Eclair 2.1 and not FroYo or else you'lll have to wait a while before you can root it.
Try all the ROMs first with all the apps you would care about, so you won't have any usage or compatibility issues. IMHO start from flashing Safe Stock ROM > other Sense ROMS> AOSPs > CM7.
I played around with some ROMS when I got my Wildfire, and then settled for WP v0.8, but this was before the dev moved on and CM7 nightlies were out.Still, it's awesome and serves all my needs.
As the previous post said:
MAKE SURE IT'S ECLAIR 2.1 !!!!
The Wildfires currently retailing are Froyo 2.2 and can't yet be rooted - ie. NO overclock and NO custom ROMs.
Apologies for the shouting but I don't want you to be disappointed like I was earlier this week when I bought my 2nd Wildfire retail.

Keep your fingers crossed for me
i can recommend wildpuzzle v.08, not one problem since flashing.
you should be ok 3 have only just released update
I will take my Wildfire tommorrow, already comfirm that it's 2.1
Hi just want to echo the posts from above.Make sure it`s 2.1.Got my Wildfire just over a month ago and have got it rooted, overclocked and running live wallpapers.
If I can do it after years of having Nokia phones anyone can do it, mostly thanks for the instructions and help from these pages.
I`ve currently got WildPuzzle v 0.8 overclocked 691 max and 245 min and running nicely.
Sure its not the fastest phone so pay 3 times as much and get a desire!
Seriously for the money it`s a good phone
thanks very much guys
i must say this forum rockz!
lots of fast responses unlike the insanely mac forums(dont ask me)
Thanks guyz will keep you posted
Just get my phone, rooted and installed CM6 into it. Wildfire rocks

Is Streakdroid 2.3 stable / working

Hi,
Streakdroid 1.9 has started to crash and go into a bootloop now I so I think it's about time I changed as this has happened before. My options are:
SimpleStreak
Streakdroid 2.3
My question is, is Streakdroid 2.3 stable enough to be used by someone who needs the phone fully working.
I don't want to bither the guys in the thread so thought I would ask here.
Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Its stable enough. Read through the thread to get a better understanding.
Sent from the SuperStreak! ;-)
I was going to ask a similar question as at the moment I'm not had much luck. While it has been responsive and nice and quick, this morning I've have it crash loads. Along with a number of other ROMs that I have tried I don't seem to be having much luck.
Has anyone got more experience of maybe a older more stable ROM.
If you want stability go with stock 351 or 360.
SimpleStreak and Streakin' 354 have had the best reports of stability IMO. I have not used them, this is based on reading the threads - like you should do.
GingerStreak is still in development and some stuff does not work. So it would be usable only if you don't need the functions that are not implemented yet. What's your defintion of "fully working"?
Yep I did read through the threads which is why I put on streakdriod, then hit some issues. The others where a bit daunting with 50+ pages of comments to read though to see it was a bit pointless looking at it.
Really just looking for a pointer before I start reading up further.
So cheers what you offered will be a good starter.
I've been using 2.3 for a week now. I've only had one random reboot whilst using the youtube app. Currently it's been up for 3 days without reboot. It's nice to use, quick and also has the gingerbread enhancements.
Give it a try, you might just like it ;-)

Since you are coming from 1.9 and willing to change, I dont know what kernel the SimpleStreak runs on , so I will not comment on that. I can talk a bit about 2.3b2 since I am spending time with it. There you have a pretty stable kernel I can compare it with the stability of the 1.9.1 ( as a kernel ) but the framework of 2.3b2 is less stable so be prepared for surprises. As for the notion of "fully stable" you may need to go back to earlier options that had been around much longer ( and even there you might not find it ).
