Okay here's what you need to do:
Open up command prompt on your computer and enter the command - "ping -t your.phone.ip.address" (this well only work once connected with wifi). This will continuously ping your phone and once you execute the command you should be getting an error - destination host unreachable.
Once you've got the ping running open up terminal emulator on your phone and ping your computers address - once you do so, you should see the ping on computer to phone start getting replies from your phone. now try winamp.
If you need help with any of this let us know

How can I find my phone's IP address? When I put "IP address" it gives me a bunch of jargle that I don't understand.
Sent from my Liberty using XDA App
go to wireless settings, long press on the network your connected to, modify settings, it should be listed there
So I entered the correct addresses and got the ping working. Winamp still hasn't found my device yet..

Correct. To see if it worked just look at you computer. If you see the "destination host unreachable" error go away, then you've done it right...not to mention, if you pong from the terminal emulator, it's automatically continuous lol.

You put "ping (your computer's ip)", don't forget to click 'discover' after turning off wireless sync.

Are you pinging your computer from your phone WHILE you have the "ping -t" running on your computer? The "ping -t" should run a continuous ping to your phones ip address, are you seeing that? Are you pinging the right address for your computer? For your phone?

Hey, I'm also trying to get this to work, with no avail. I've followed all the steps correctly, but I still recieve the Destination Host Unreachable...
I know my computer Ip is correct (It should be; checked from cmd > ipconfig (Default gateway?).
My phone Ip (From settings) is 192.168.2.2, but when I ping it from cmd, I constantly recieve, "Reply from 192.168.2.5: Destination Host Unreachable". Should this be of any concern to me?
I'm using a router if it makes any difference?
Help is much appreciated

Default gateway is not your computers ip. 192.168.2.5 is probably your ip.

Well, its receiving replies from the phone, which is good. But it still refuses to appear in the winamp devices list...
I've tried turning off, then re-enabling the 'wireless sync', but that does nothing.
Any ideas?
Its not crucial that this works, but since the options there, I thought I might as well try it....

Hi,
could an expert out there advise me if my theory is possible please?
Using Remote desktop/Terminal services : See whats on my PC/Laptop on the screen of my XDA2 - connected via cradle and usb(as usual). If so what do I put in the "Server" box of the XDA Terminal services prog and on the "Main" PC.. Do I have to make a Network first? Or ?
Thanks to all.
The site is great but much of it goes straight over my head at the moment..

Your theory sounds correct.
Try this thread for guides on setting up terminal services. But basically load terminal services on your PDA, also enable it on your desktop, enter desktop's ip address in the box on your PDA and connect.

Use WIFI, it is better and faster when using terminal services.
Been using this method since last year.
Thanks but I do not have wifi or bluetooth...
There is a ref to doing it on MS site via the cradle and usb but then it shoots off in the over the web stuff...
I have tried just now but nothing connects.... But I notice that when I check my desktop (xp) pc under the rempte tab - I only have Remote Assistance.... Could this be it? Perhaps I do not have Remote Desktop installed then ! Eh? I will try to locate my original xp discs and see if I can install !!??
Remote desktop or Terminal services connect only via IP address.
So you can only connect via TCP/IP using WIFI on your XDA.
Bluetooth 1.1 has no IP address setting so it is not possible also.
I tried all methods since last year and WIFI is the only solution or if your XDA has a backpack you can use a CF type NIC for wired connection via crosslink or hub.
Still Wifi is the cheapest and cleanest alternative. You can use Adhoc settings between your PC if you have no WIFI access point.

you can do it with bluetooth
PEN which is bluetooth network is supported by 1.1 in vidconn's bluetooth stack
or you can just connect it with activesync over bluetooth that works too
well no it dont problem is when you connect it will sendt you to xp login screen for you to log in
and that disable activesync connection
kinda funny
With WM5 and ActiveSync 4.2 you can now use Terminal Services via Bluetooth or USB
I tried it successfully connecting to our Windows 2000 and 2003 server and my Windows XP remote desktop.

?!? I have WM2005 and Activesync 4.2 (Build 4876). I see that the network over USB made by Activesync uses 169.254.2.1 for PPC and 169.254.2.2 for Desktop PC. So I tried to let Terminal Services connect on 169.254.2.2 but my Himalaya says that this connection cannot be used for TS. How did you do?
Cause you can still use IrDA, Bluetooth (using Widcomm Stack and PAN personal area network), or Wi-Fi... but not Activesync LAN... am I wrong?

This is the root of your issue.
You probably have Windows XP Home Edition. Windows XP Home Edition does not support using Remote Desktop Protocol (Terminal Services) to remotely access the machine.
This and the fact that XP Home cannot join a domain are the two main differences between XP Home and XP Professional.
If you had XP Professional, you would have a second check box at the bottom of the Remote tab that said "Allow Remote Dekstop Connections to this machine" or something similar.
I believe I saw a hack on the web about enabling Remote Desktop on XP Home a while back. Look it up on Google.
Once you get an IP connection to your phone, all you have to do is start up the Terminal Services / Remote Desktop application on the phone, enter the IP of the machine you want to remote into, and press connect. That is, provided the machine has the ability to accept the connection.
Hope this helps you out.

I have a question. I can not get my Wizard to use Wifi OR Activesync to do terminal services. It is always trying to use the GPRS connection. How can I resolve this?
". It is always trying to use the GPRS connection. How can I resolve this?"
it's the general issue if you dont pick the connection of my network in
system->connection->connection->advance
it's not spc for terminal services it's for all network access
if you later on want to use gprs you have to set it back in there
last time i messed around with terminal services my problem was using activesync as network i got the 2000pro login box but when my pda log'd in my normal pc user was log'd out which ment that activesync was closed cutting the connection
a Pen profile would solve this of cause
or an update in activesync
I am trying to find file explorer with vpn support. I have tried gsfinder+ but it seems there's no support for vpn.
Does someone know any file explorer with vpn support?
-Matti-
What exactly do you mean by file explorer with vpn support?
Meaning that,
when try to use my firm shared resource/network folder. I first need vpn to connect inner network. Vpn works great but I cant somehow use shared resources.
Tested:
I connect vpn. Now I can show firm intranet web site so it means vpn works. I open gsfinder. try to connect network folder \\server\share but some error occurs.
And the question was, is there any file explorer that support vpn connections?
sorry my bad english...
the only apps that seem to work properly over a vpn are exchange active sync, pocket ie and the terminal services client.
maybe i'm missing something but i can't find any file explorer that will let me access the office network over vpn.
surely this is kind of the point of a vpn connection? to (securely) access the network's resources as if you were physically connected to it.
not being able to access fileshares is more than a bit rubbish!
I'm new in this forum, and I'm also quite newbie in windows mobile world, but here is how I managed to get PPTP VPN work with resco explorer:
1) Setup your VPN connection to "Settings -> connections -> connections"
2) Setup "Settings -> connections -> advanced -> Select Networks" as shown in pic 1
3) Add LAN addresses to "Settings -> connections -> advanced -> exceptions" (ie. 192.168.0.*/*)
You need to open the VPN connection first and then use resco explorer, it does not open the connection automatically.
I noticed from my firewall (m0n0wall) logs that it always tries to use my ISP:s "fake" WINS server, even if I try to map the share using IP address. So I put my WINS servers LAN IP address manually to connection settings and then it starts to work. Now I can securely access my local network folders anywhere using computer name i.e. \\SERVER\SHARE.

Thanks a lot joksanen. I get it working now with gsfinder, so happy
Only thing I needed to do was that I add intranet addresess to exception list and vola its working...
Your instructions were great!!!
Finally got it working!!!
The missing link for me was setting up a WINS server.
Thanks for the tip
Where I need to write the WINS server?
I didn't have a WINS Server.
Does this mean I need to write the
IP Adress from the Computer, I would like to connect?
I got the same problem connecting with VPN a LAN-drive.
After connecting with OpenVPN or L2TP I can ping the Computer,
but I can't map a drive.
Does somebody have a Idea for me?
Thank you for any help in advance.

Hi
What steps or things have you already tried?
If you can ping your computer then the most likely thing is:
1) You need to enable remote desktop on your computer.
2) You must have an account with a password set to use remote desktop.
3) Firewall on your computer is blocking access.
Other things that would be helpful to know is:
From your mobile phone how are you connecting? Are you connecting by wireless or through your mobile operator?
What operating system?
What other things you have already tried?
Give us something to work with and someone may help.
Regards
Phil
I tried the following two steps.

2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8BbrZqoXpY
I turned off all firewall.But I can't connect.:-(
I tired connect from other PC-s, and my Topaz, by wireless, and from my moile operator. Nothing.
I thing the main problem is on my notebook.
On my notebook - what I would like to control from other device - the OS is Vista, on the other PC where I tired connect from is WIN2000, and on my Topaz WIN MOBILE 6.1.
If you need other information for the solution, just tell....

I did it all again, what you suggested. + I turned off all firewall (what included in Vista, and Avast too.)
I got this failure message:-(
I translated it.
Did somebody get like this? Tell something for Anybody?
I tried to connect from an other notebook. I couldn't.:-(
Now I am sure the problem is in my notebook.
What else can I do in settings what solve the problem????
I run out of ideas.:-(
PLEAS HELP!
From the other PC failure message:
The first thing I would try is to simplify the setup so as to bypass the port forwarding stuff by just testing if remote desktop works on the local network.
Use WiFi on your TD2 to connect to the same network that the PC is on (or use that other notebook). Then do ipconfig in a command window on the PC you want to connect to get its local IP address. Then on the TD2, use that IP as the "computer", and see if that works. If it does, then it's an issue with the port forwarding.
I think the port forwarding is ok. The port is open. It is 100%
port looks fine, strange its 192.168.2.* and not 192.168.1.* but it should work anyway..
make sure you admin on pc and make sure all remote services started,
and make sure you connect to external ip from topaz.
EDIT: number 2 in your error message is "maximum connections" so try log off pc before trying to connect.
I checked everything like an 8 years old boy.
And all are ok. I show you. So what is the next?:-(
Yours sincerely,
M.
But I can ping every devices.
192.168.2.100. My Notebook, what I would like to control.
192.168.2.101. An other computer, with Win 2000 what I use to testing.
192.168.2.102. My Topaz.

Hi All,
I don't have a Diamond 2, but I do have a Touch Diamond. I had the same problem until I changed "Settings", "Connections", "Advanced", "Select Networks" and switched the private network to "Media Net" or whatever your Carrier calls it. For whatever reason the Wifi portion of the phone can't get to any internal IP's on your network until you change this setting. You may also take a look and make sure proxy is unchecked as well. Hope this helps.

Yep, that's exactly what I meant. I guess I could've been a little clearer I suppose. If the private network is set to work or whatever the default is I can't RDP to any devices internal to my network. Try switching yours back from wap to work and testing.

I tried but nothing.
Your device must be rooted for this to work
Get "Samba Filesharing" from the Market and install it.
Configure it on your network in the settings- very straightforward- it will give you an IP address 192.168.1.x and the name \\Android for your device
If you are using Windows 7, Right-click Computer and click Map Network Drive, otherwise open up My Computer and click the "Map Network Drive" at the top
Enter the IP address (given by the app) and the Username and Password you chose during setup
Optional: Set a NETBIOS name and use that instead of the IP address and then you would type in \\netbiosname
Optional: Map the drive to your Internal sdcard or External sdcard depending on your preference- example \\netbiosname\sdcard (default) as the path in map network drive.
That's it! Now you have a drive in My Computer mapped to your Tab (or any other Android device)
that's a cool, how-to man.
One extra step, you must have a rooted device for this app to work.

Configure it on your network in the settings- very straightforward- it will give you an IP address 192.168.1.x and the name \\Android for your device
Open up Computer/My Computer and click "Map Network Drive" and enter in the IP address (given by the app) and the Username and Password you chose during setup
That's it! Now you have a drive in My Computer mapped to your Tab (or any other Android device)

Hello mkhattab .
Thanks a lot for the great write up on how to get Samba working. It's a great program and certainly makes the good, old USB cable almost obsolete .
If I may be so bold as to add a line for us Windows 7 users,
Item #3: Right click on my computer and and then carry on as above........."Map Network Drive"......etc.
Thanks again
For those who dislike typing, and frequently change networks, set a NETBIOS name and use that instead of the IP address.
Type in \\netbiosname in the start menu or Run, or as \\netbiosname\sdcard as the path in map network drive.

Just a side note...
I don't know if anyone here using the hacked .apk for Skype for 3G calling but if you do you will notice that you cannot receive calls while the tablet is sleeping (like if you press the hardware button).
The option for WakeLock here that prevents it from sleeping now allows me to receive calls no matter what. Funny thing is that I couldn't even get the filesharing to work but now I have full functionality over Skype. Hah!
Thank you for the thread. And as I am sure there are other ways to do this, but I am just happy I can receive calls whenever now. And maybe I'll work a little harder to get Samba working as well...
Thanks for the great guide dude.
Just one question. I have File Expert installed on my Tab. There is also an option where I can share my files over the computer. Is the setting here similar to Samba Manager? Thanks

Not sure if this is your problem, but WPA2 is for wireless N devices, I would suggest running WPA and see if that will work for ya.

Is it all kinds of Android phones or just one kind? Is your server the DNS and DHCP server as well?

Having a double NAT will cause sporadic DNS issues because both devices, the routers and server in your case are trying to perform the Network Address Translation, which basically means converting friendly URLs into IP addresses, and IP addresses into friendly URLs. It does not completely take down the internet, and the issues are sporadic. I had the same situation with my Gateway (eMTA with built in router) running my own router. I could get to most sites, but others I could not. I had to have the Gateway placed into bridged mode, disabling the internal router and NAT functions. It solved my issues. So just because some devices can browse doesn't mean that isn't the issue.
Your server should be the only thing performing the DHCP and DNS functions, and if the routers are configured to do the same, you have a double NAT, and will cause the issue you are describing.

I want you to try two things. It is OK to have the DHCP server enabled, but not the DNS server. Leave Default Gateway, Default Domain, Primary and Secondary DNS blank
Leaving the DHCP enabled, you will essentially have two subnets. Will that pose a problem?

and try:

Use a static IP and the servers Default Gateway, Default Domain, and DNS addresses
Clone the server's MAC

Did you set that 169 IP address yourself on the server? A 169 is typically a self-assigned IP address when the device couldn't obtain one from the DHCP server, and a connection isn't possible. If that is what your configuration is, and internet works on that particular machine, that's the info you need.
So on both of the access point, assign a Static IP, but not the same one listed there because that is the server's IP, but since it is a DHCP server you should be able to give one of the AP 169.254.1.51 and the other 169.254.1.52, and configuration in the server to issue those may be necessary since they are static. The Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Servers, use the same info in both AP's
Please let me know if this works for you.
