How to install your old zips when you flashed the new cwm - Epic 4G General

I just wanted to help those that didn't know this. If you installed the new cwm and have some zips on your sd card you wanted to flash but can't in cwm3? This is what you do. Get quick reboot from market and use that to boot into recovery. (You cant do it manually cause it takes you to the new cwm). It should take you instead of the new recovery but to the old one. From here you can then flash your old amend zip files. Not sure if they all work but I've done some this way. Sorry if this has been posted but I didn't see it.

Thanks for the tip, this was my only reservation to making the switch to CWM3.

YEah I just wanted to share it for those skeptical of going to cwm3.

Thanks for the heads up. I just tried it and it worked. Thanks again.

You know, I hadn't even thought about it, but with the redirect, you're right. That makes flashing amend zips the same as flashing to ext4 was last week.

hm - quickboot > recovery brings me to the new recovery version.
I'm not sweating it-- but can you think of any reason why?

What steps did you take to install ext4 and get the new cwm3? Did you already have ext4 before the new cwm3 or did you do it when the cwm3 came out just by flashing that?

Thank you! I been trying to find a way.

Im not sure if I can speak for decalex but I had Ext4 installed and then flashed CWM3. If I normal boot into CWM I get v3.0.0.5 If i use quick boot I get v3.0.0.2

That's the way I did it too. I don't know why that is. It has something to do with the redirector. Try booting into recovery from rom manager and see what you get? Rom manager takes me to the old cwm .0 and then I select reboot rec. And I get to the .2 hack. The one you want.

You know come to think of it what rom are u using? Cause I'm on bonsai and I can't get anything to boot me into the cwm v. 3.0.0.2. I think the rom depends on what cwm you boot into. When I was on quantum I don't think I could get into the older cwms. The three finger took me to 3.0.0.5 and quick boot took me to 3.0.0.2 but when I went to bonsai quick boot takes me to the older cwm hack .2 but the three finger always take you to the .5 new one. This was just for me I don't know if it's accurate for everyone but if you are not on bonsai and can't get into the older cwm maybe you could try bonsai and see then if you can. Let me know if anyone else this worked for. Thanks.

Need Help on Manual Recovery Screens Clockwork Mod

Got Rom Premium, CWM, and AmonRa on N1.
Playing and trying to learn about the manual (green) recovery screens.
Q1: What is the Apply Update:Update.Zip for?
Q2: When in those screens, no buttons I try can take me back to previous screen, like vol- does in AmonRa.
Thanks for any help and I read dozens of search results without really understanding Apply Update and no luck on going back on screens.
I am not expert yet, so please keep replies at a for dummy level.
Ken
If your using Clockword Recovery then Ill help ya out.
1: Thats used if you have the rom or update on the root of your sd card and have it named update.zip. This is how we used to flash roms on the old recovery menus on the G1, they just left it in. Now you can just search your sd card for the rom you want.
2: The power buttom will go back, and if your on the main screen the power button will turn off the display to save power.
What do you mean when you say manual recovery screen? Do you mean the stock recovery or are you talking about a custom? With the stock recovery it will only install files named update.zip signed with google keys. If you are talking about a custom recovery that means that it will search for a file named update.zip and flash that.
Thanks a lot,
1. I thought the zip wasn't needed anymore based on my research.
2. Got it, I swore I tried that.
When on main screen how do you exit it?

1: It isn't, they kind of just left it in as a fast way of flashing without having to look for it.
2: Just hit the reboot option at the top.
One more question, at least for now.
Is going back and forth between recoveries, as easy as just "flashing alternate recovery" from that selection. I.E. CWM to AmonRa and vice versa?
Your help is greatly appreciated

Yup. Tho id recommend Clockwork, since im a little bias.
And no prob, I was an android noob at one time.
Ninja Edit:
A warning tho, if you use nandroid, the 2 recoveries don't play nice with each others nandroids.
Thanks McFroger3,
I like what CWM offers just heard some problems with it and AmonRa is rock solid, but more manual and doesn't allow for quick flashes of the CM6 nightlies I am on.

I am just talking about the green screens where you do your backup/restores, flash roms etc. Bad semantics on my part. It's where you go when you select Reboot into Recovery on the CWM main screen.
I think I am good to go,

Right, I am assuming you are talking about Backup with CWM, restore with CWM and same for AmonRa.

Yea, if you back up with CWM, and try to restore with Amon, you will run into issues lol.
Thanks Again for the heads up,
I read that during my research to solve these issues which you quickly helped me with. I won't mix the two. If CWM works well for me, I will use it most if not all of the time. I got into this helping new rooters on the Nexus One forum when most used 1 click to root and started using Rom Mangager and CWM.
Got to call it a day!
Thanks,

OK,
I want CWM Recovery to work for me. I flashed the latest nightly from the list in ROM Manager. Followed all prompts and allowed the Google Addons to be downloaded also. OK'd backup. The backup and nightly went fined. But, the gapps hung on installing. Had to pull battery, reboot, and restore to previous backup. All Ok now, but it bothers me and not sure if I want to try again. Have been flashing roms, gapps etc with AmomRa for awhile.
Did I miss something? CWM did all the choosing of what to dl and flash. Something different on gapps? It was hdpi-frf91-2-signed.zip. I know that is not the latest. Latest is frf91-UP. Don't know if that matters.
If I have to copy that to sd and flash, what is the procedure? If I select the latest nightly, I have to tell CWM I don't want the gapps, then does it give me that opportunity to grab the gapps zip from sd card before it flashes the nightly. If not, I have no market on phone to dl anything like Titanium to get phone running.
What am I mising?
I copied latest gapps zip to sd card, did not rename. It has .zip on end. Playing around I selected Install Rom from SD Card and found the zip. Clicked on it. Options under Install Queue screen: Ok or Add Zip. Do I zip since it has one. And this allowing me to queue it and go back and add another rom. Didn't see those choices when I did the procedure from the Download Rom choice on Rom manager main screen.
Easier question may be:
If I want to flash latest nightly and a gapps zip I copied to sd card, the latest. What is the procedure?
It seems CWM won't let me install latest nightly without installing gapps, not the latest. Don't know if that is my problem.
Seems I would need to flash latest nightly again and if ok, just flash latest gapps, no wipe, over the just installed nightly.
And if gapps don't install, I can go back and flash my latest gapps from the sd card.
Any thoughts.
Had to flash my latest .zip fromsd card after the gapps attached to lastest nightly failed to install again.

I *CANNOT* boot into ClockWork recovery!

I am on a rooted Samsung Vibrant running Froyo and CWM 2.5.1.2. I cannot boot into CWM's recovery. I tried flashing CWM again and again, but I didn't work. I tried reinstalling packages at least 5 times and nothing. I just boot into the normal recovery. It worked the very first time I tried it, right after I rooted it and I installed CWM for the first time, then I had to reinstall packages twice. I used super-one-click to root my phone. I am using the latest version of busybox. I have given ROM Manager superuser access. I reinstalled ROM Managed. I deleted the clockworkmod folder and update.zip and installed CWM again. I have tried re-rooting twice with no success. What's the problem? It worked the very first time I rooted. But why not now?
I have this happen from time to time with ROM Manager....I just go clear down to the bottom and install an older version...say 2.5.1.1, hit reboot into recovery and it does, and then I update back to 2.5.1.2 and it will work after that on the newer version

Yea you have to use the "froyo" version, but you will also need to delete slacker radio from your phone via titanium first. That is the only way it would work for me.

I ve had to downgrade ROM manager before also...so you might be ok to move back to 2.5.1.1 after your flash
Also, earlier today I did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
So that may be part of his issue.
Clockwork seems to be hanging on installing my ROM right now...
is it normal for the progress bar to not move once it hits "Formatting DATA:..." ?
yea as long as it keeps saying Formatting, Copying, deleting...it will move if it flashes good..

When you did this where you on 2.2 (kA6) or 2.1 (JI6)?
im asking because im on 2.2 but for the life of me i havent been able to get clockwork to run. ive done almost every single step there is out there and have had no luck, but im thinking that my phone is HW locked so that may be my problem.
i can flash any stock rom through odin (JFD) (JI6)
and (KA6) through kies mini
but i cant get into clockwork recovery in any of those rom's.

Looking for ClockworkMod 2.5.1.2 to flash over 2.5.1.0. Just can't seem to find it.

A link or a file, either would be great. I keep finding CW 3.x and 2.5.1.0, but never 2.5.1.2 for Epic. Please, someone point the way.
Many thanks.
To get to .2 boot into clockwork go to advanced and reboot recovery. That should put you into .2

This thread is where you need to go. Get the one-click ext4 zip. Inside it is a file called prepare.zip. Flash prepare.zip to add 2.5.1.2 to your phone if the rom you have doesn't already have it. Then, if you death-grip into recovery, you will see 2.5.1.0. Select advanced->reboot recovery to reboot into 2.5.1.2.
Thank you guys. I do need to flash since I never have flashed 2.5.1.2 prior.
I also found a similar file inside the viper 4.0.2b ROM package.
Follow up question, inside the flash, in addition to the recovery files, I see:
/system/etc/mke2fs.conf
/modules/ext4.ko
/modules/jbd2.ko
I presume these are for ext4. I plan to stay with RFS for now. I was looking for 2.5.1.2 because I want to use the latest Bonsai ROM (coming from stock DK28) and it seems to call for it, even with RFS. Will these extra files cause any issues later?
Thanks again.

Thanks for pointing this out. I mis-read the post. In the original post, while beneath the "Latest News", it is written that RFS not supported in V2.0, immediately below that, under "Next Release News", it is written that "No more RFS...". Based on "Next Release", I thought it would be the version after the current. That, along with the instructions on the second post for RFS, I falsely figured...
I guess it's all for not.
I am stuck at SAMSUNG anyhow (after Reboot Recovery from 2.5.1.0). Can't get to 2.5.1.2...
Edit: On the Stuck on SAMSUNG issue, I re-flashed the latest 1-click from HERE, then re-flashed the .2 prepare/flash first .zip, and all is good. I can get into .2 now.
So the big question is whether you can create a swap disk with 2.5.1.2?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I flashed 2.0.1 with no problem using 2.5.1.2 but i was already converted to ext4. Flashing it would put you on ext4 and add cwm3
now that I know how to update it to 2.5.1.2 my question is-
should I?
I have no real reason to do so. I don't intend to do any further modifications to my ROM, just going to stick with the pre-rooted 2.2 I have. Would there be any benefit to updating CWM in this case?
The only reason to get 2.5.1.2 was to be able to flash to ext4. And then cwm 3 simplified the conversion to ext4. If you don't intend to convert to ext4, then there is no reason to get anything other than 2.5.1.0.

CWM Problems

UPDATE: To fix 3.0.2.4 from not formatting /system
Open rom manager and select settings, and check erase recovery. hit menu again and select clear cache, then flash 3.0.2.4 again.
now if your in recovery and you cant boot back up to use rom manager, use the file below. It will allow you to restore your backup then once booted back up use the method above to fix 3.0.2.4.
The reason im leaving custom over 3.0.2.4 is bc i know fastboot flash with this one will allow you to restore without wiping recovery or clear cache or anything else.
http://www.mediafire.com/file/b8ejhqbf3tgnsoe/recovery.img - this is CMW 3.0.1.4 just altered for installing zips. linking for people needing a recover img to boot up
To install:
1. If in recovery, open ur terminal on ur pc and type adb reboot boatloader
2. Once in bootloader it will load fast boot and say fastboot usb in red
3. cd to the folder with fastboot.exe and also place recover.img in that folder
4. then enter fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
5. adb reboot recovery
6. restore your backup and boot up

So be careful with flashing and all bc yo may not be able to restore currently with cwm.

I ran into the same problem. I tried to do a restore and got stuck. I used an sd card reader and put the 3rd file from the root thread PG05IMG.zip on the root of my sd card. I then put the card back in. Rebooted into recovery holding the volume down and the power button. It reflashed the file automatically and I followed the steps from 7 on to regain root. Worked for me, but now I have to start over. Hopefully they will get CWM working again. I will be much more careful about what I delete from now on. I think I will freeze it in TiBackup first to make sure everything is still working correctly. Hope this helps.

Rooted my GF's Fascinate, Need Help Nandroiding

I just rooted my girlfriend's year old fascinate that was bone stock from day 1. In CWM I am unable to make a nandroid (I get an error). I've heard I need a modded stock kernel in order to successfully make a backup in CWM 3.x or something along those lines.
I looked in the developer forum under the sticky with the list of everything, but it only shows three or so kernels (none of which hint at stock).
I have a Thunderbolt and before that a Droid 2 so I know a lot about rooting and flashing with those two devices, but I am new to the Fascinate. I messed around a bit with Odin when I rooted the phone, but I'm still learning.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Older recoveries supported amend scripting (2.x.x) while newer ones support edify scripting (3.x.x)...depending on which rom your running it may cause problems with backups and restores if you don't have the right recovery...unless you plan on going to an Mtd build (cm7, Miui, ect) I would recommend using the (2.5.1) recovery also called the 3/30 fix all recovery because this version supports both amend and edify scripting..so you make a nandroid with out issues....if you can get to recovery still I would install this zip and then select reboot recovery...it will bring you to the 3/30 fix all recovery where you should be able to backup and restore your nandroid...link to follow shortly...
Scroll down in the first page to the .zip file, download and continue with the steps I listed...I know its confusing at first mainly because development has happens rather quickly which is a good thing! its just a lot to catch up on!

I'm deciding between those two because I use OMFGB on my Thunderbolt all the time, but MIUI is very good for my girlfriend I think because it's very straight forward and simplistic.

Its not hard to get in to these roms, but you must be sure if you have problems or want to go to anything non Mtd you will have to Odin an official VZW tar and pit file to repartition before going to any non Mtd rom

Yes you will have to do what's in the second reply.
You have it all correct, if you nandroid her current stock setup you can only restore it on a non Mtd build you would have to do what I linked to in the second post to use a vzw rom with pit file to repartition...boot fully, flash recovery then you could restore her stock nandroid..for example you get her on Miui you can only do a nandroid with the recovery that comes with it...I think its a 4.x.x recovery...trying to restore the stock nandroid before repartitioning back to stock will cause problems...so basically you only want to restore a nandroid on the same build (Mtd to Mtd nandroid, or ext4/rfs to ext4/rfs nandroid) and if all else fails and you run into big problems, doing the VZW restore (although can be a lengthy process) will get the phone back running to start over!

Did you see my reply before this? I was unable to get CWM 2.x to flash so I'm still on CWM 3.x.

I did see it after I replied, is her phone on ed05? I'm surprised that neither the 3/30 fix all or 3.x.x is working
Edit after looking at the pick again you're using times infinity's recovery....you would need to Odin the 3/30 fix all recovery and immediately three finger boot into recovery without letting the phone boot or if you installed the 3/30 fix all via .zip file, you need to choose reboot recovery to enter the fix all one, it should be 2.5.1 I believe

Here's a picture of her phone info:

And as you can tell from the other photo, both making a backup and flashing the CWM 2.x doesn't work.
Trying a backup results in: "Error while backing up boot image!"
Trying to flash CWM 2.x results in that long information message.
That sucks man i'm sorry I've never been on ed05 so I don't know if that why your having problems my suggestion...back up all her contacts by exporting them to sd card, download titanium backup its free in the market, backup all of her apps and screw the nandroid, flash what you want, restore her apps with titanium, but do not restore data, restore get contacts and then boot into the recovery that comes with the rom/kernel and then do a nandroid and that WILL work..again sorry for the trouble, just trying to help.

I appreciate all your help. I'll let you know how it goes.
ed05 is not the problem...You have to use cwm 2.5.1.x if your trying to nandroid backup a stock rom. This version of cwm works on all froyo roms and powerwashed gingerbread. After you make a nandroid with cwm2.5.1.x, then flash cwm4 and proceed to installing miui.
Read this link for flashing mtd based roms such as miui, cm7, vgb...etc

That was my first reply to him...to use 2.5.1 but he said he still got errors? I don't have a clue what the problem is...he's said he's used ti's 3x.x, and the 3/30 fix all still with errors? confused?

I think you skipped a step... Are you flashin cwm via the PDA function in ODIN?
If not you need to:
ODIN the cwmAll.tar here: http://api.viglink.com/api/click?format=go&drKey=1359&loc=http%3A%2F%2Fforum.xda-developers.com%2Fshowthread.php%3Ft%3D1238070&v=1&libid=1316306736482&out=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mediafire.com%2F%3F6x5utoca59et7o9&title=%5BGUIDE%5D%20Installing%20a%20rom%2F%20cwm%20recovery%2F%20or%20going%20back%20to%20stock%20for%20NEWBIES!%20-%20xda-developers&txt=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mediafire.com%2F%3F6x5utoca59et7o9&jsonp=vglnk_jsonp_13163071702031
make a nandroid back up of the stock rom.
go back to odin and flash the jt's cwm4
boot into recovery
wipe data, cache, dalvik
install miui.zipfrom sd card
Follow the rest of the directions in the link I provided
+1 there ya go. Beat me to it.
Plus, I wouldn't even worry about backing up your stock ROM. Just flash the full official package. This will wipe your slate clean if you run into problems. Restoring nandroid backups leads to glitches eventually from what I've seen.
Sorry, I didn't see there was a second page here...I'm a bum.

Really? Snide, snarky comments are respectable? At the very least, they shouldn't be coming from the person asking for help.
