Just curious because I'm not sure how this works but if Verizon switches to 4g like they keep advertising is the Fascinate going to be compatible? Or will everyone wanting 4G have to upgrade their phones?
the fascinate does not have the needed hardware for 4g connection.
however you will still have 3g on the fascinate... and 4G will take a while to spread to most of the country.
Well we should still get 3G coverage, but our phones to not support LTE(4G). I am not even going to bother with LTE until I have coverage where I live anyway. They have it in denver, but I only go up there once a month so it's basically useless. I spend more time at home and school and use the wifi, which is usually better than 4G.
This is from Verizon Q & A for 4g LTE
Can I use my current 3G device on the 4G Mobile Broadband network?
No, as Verizon Wireless introduces new services, such as 4G Mobile Broadband, you will need to purchase new 4G devices to take advantage of the 4G network. However, you will still be able to use your existing devices for the foreseeable future on our 3G network.
LTE = data surcharge and probably a cap
I'll stick to 3g.

Possible, but not confirmed. Sprint was pretty up-front about the EVO and Epic requiring additional data plans when they were announced. Verizon has been quiet about it so far.
But then, they also haven't announced any devices yet, so they might be tied in there.

There's a data surcharge and cap on 3g. Lte data will probably just cost more per month.
Considering the 2g network seems to be still active, you should be fine with 3g devices for a while.

Will Verizon Lte network have any effect on the Fascinate?
Nope. You would have to have a different radio to be able to pick up the signal. Sadly we can't do this through a software update.

The effect it will have is sadness. That LTE is so fast and we are 3g!!!

As long as the LTE network isn't hooked up at the same places the current network is and they don't have to share any bandwidth between them, there won't be a difference. If one cable is carrying all the traffic from the current 3G system and the upcoming 4G network, there could be some slight slow down in data speeds, but that would be the only way it would affect you.
I live in the middle of nowhere, so LTE won't have an effect on any phone I buy for years to come.
If Verizon follows Sprint's lead, the fascinate may actually gain an advantage by not incurring the extra fees associated with LTE access (e.g. the EVO 4G)
I don't expect to see LTE penetration beyond the biggest urban markets for quite some time (remember how slow 3g spread?)
This is me just thinking, but the LTE rollout may actually help us a bit. My reasoning in this is that some of the load will be lifted off of 3g when people start moving to LTE, giving us more bandwidth. Thats just me thinking though.

Negative on that. Actually LTE is to cover 110 million people by the end of the year alone, and full penetration (97% of territory) by 2013. I see their efforts ramped up much more this time around
I'm the primary on my families plan so I just have to wait a year and I get to upgrade so hopefully by them 4G well be in my area and there still be some legit 4G phones to choose from.

This is true indeed...probably would take some time to lighten bw loads, but caps would be raised eventually and 3g speeds would increase some

Agreed, however this depends on how quickly they get phones rolling out, but I think by then we will also want to be on lte phones.

LTE phones will appear at earliest Feb or March of next year, and thats a best case scenario....
The new LTE network is ran on a seperate fiber from the current 3g network. 3g is T1 based, LTE is ethernet. One will not affect the other.

This is "somewhat" true. Yes, LTE is on the ethernet backhaul network (requirement for LTE). But a good portion of the country also has EVDO on ethernet as well.
Bummer... I was hoping that much like the Tmobile network it would help our phones... Thank you for the information.
http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/111455/4g-is-a-myth-and-confusing
Plus the fact it's not even close to my area of living
yeah cell providers called it that cause it sounded good, and for them was technincally the 4th generation of mobile internet - but it is not what 4G officially stands for.... there IS NO real 4g networks anywhere, as the standards are in their infancy.
Old news. ITU said this a while back. It's funny, I talked to Verizon at their Chicago LTE launch event and they laughed and said, it's all marketing anyway, so who cares.
ITU has no teeth, so no one really cares.
WiMax and LTE are 4G networks that aren't being used as that yet. All that's needed is a firmware upgrade to make it true 4G.
Tmobile on the other hand will never have 4G with their current network.

Mmm... No. If you want to equate it to something, LTE and 802.16e WiMax that Sprint and Verizon are pushing out is like 802.11b Wi-Fi. Real 4G (LTE-Advanced and 802.16m WiMax) would be more like 802.11n.
Basically, just ask yourself these questions to tell if it's 4G:
1) Do I see speeds of around 100mbps average?
2) Is all traffic being done via IPv6?
3) Are calls being made as VoIP?
Pretty sure that article is way off. I agree that it's not true 4g, but tmobile's hspa+ doesn't even get close to 12mb. Most of the time it barely reaches 4-5mbs.
yeah verizon and sprints networks are more like 3.5 g or 3.25 g. t mobiles is still 3g but since everyone else is slapping 4g stickers on their network they thought they would too, especially since the average consumer doesnt know what the f 4g is anyway. and meanwhile at&t is still trying to get 3g working lol.

You got me laughing with the AT&T still getting 3g to work well lol and there drop calls lol.
I don't know about the rest of you all, but I live in the central valley, CA and 4G is widely available throughout the region. I average from 6-10mbs down when I do a speedtest. But I only enable 4G when I really need it, otherwise my battery dies rather quickly.

Technically LTE and 801.16 in their current implications are called Pre-4G, however, the networks are being built as 4G networks. They are just not being utilized as such and the standards for both types of 4G aren't even finalized yet. They are fully packet switched networks with support for IPv6. The only place where the networks fall short is bandwidth, true 4G requires 100MB nominal speeds with at least 1GB peak. That can't happen until the standards are finalized.
T-Mo's HSPA+ is 3.5G and will never be 4G. There was a wired (I think) article just today saying they were thinking about chipping in on WiMAXs spectrum for their next generation network, aka 4G.
Edit: From the article:
One network representative, who asked not to be identified, claimed that ITU's 4G line-in-the-sand is being misconstrued. The organization previously approved the use of the term "4G" for Sprint's WiMAX and Verizon's LTE networks, he said -- though not for T-Mobile's HSPA+ network.

I'm not familiar with how cell data connections work. Will the new att 4g work with an x10i, using hsdpa?
HSPA is touted as 3.5g, if I am not wrong...
Usage of 4G would require an LTE-able phone, like the new HTC thunderbolt.
I'm not a pro at cellular networks too, just sharing my understanding through what I have read around the web.

4G and LTE are not the same thing. From what i've read, LTE is more like 3.9G

HSPA+ and LTE are both part of AT&t's 4G plan. You need a 4G capable phone to get either, X10 will not work.
I work in the cellular world. The understanding of 4g vs lte can be hard to grasp. Think of LTE as (long term evolution). companies like Verizon and AT&T won't have to invest much additional to the development of 4g or the expansion into what the next level will be. The LTE platform is designed to grow and stretch with the demand.

Just a quick question to all you 4G phone users out there. I'm looking forward to the Evo 3D when it's out. As you can see, I'll be coming from a CDMA Hero. I'm on the Simply Everything plan with Unlimited 3G, but was told that if I were to get any of the new 4G phones that I'd have to change to a plan that's Unlimited 4G with the 5GB/mo. capped 3G, regardless of whether or not I live anywhere near a 4G area or not.
My question is this. Are there any of you out there that have a 4G phone, are in an area with no 4G coverage, and are still on a plan with Unlimited 3G, or are we all going to be forced to change over to a 4G/3G plan, even though 4G may not roll out to our specific areas any time soon?
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
You will not have to change plans. You will only be required to change plans if you have a plan that does not include unlimited data. 4G coverage is depended on if your phone has an antennae that will receive the signal. An extra $10 monthly fee is required for everyone which began on January 31st, 2011.
I don't think that's accurate. My 3G data is definitly not capped at 5GB/month. I've heard that applies to mobile broadband cards not phones.
^ Shift Faced
I've never used UNDER 5 gigs a month, and I've never had a 4G signal in the entire time I've owned my Shift. Used 12gigs my first month (had a 7gig download just to update World of Warcraft on a new PC) and Sprint could care less.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Yeah the cap is only for 3g/4g internet cards, not phones.
I came from a hero to my shift and still have my unlimited 3g

Thanks tons guys. That's a relief to hear. So, pretty much I'll just have to pay an additional $10/mo. then. I can dig that.
I do wonder why that differs from mobile broadband though, but that's a question for another forum I think. lol

I can confirm too. Came from the Hero to the Shift, stayed on the same plan. Unlimited data, doesn't matter if it's 3G or 4G. And yes, they tack on the extra $10 a month when you re-up your contract.

The cap is to deter people from using wireless cards as a replacement to a home connection.
Just bought a new Galaxy 4 and i'm only getting 3g in my house. As of yesterday with my 3D HTC, I was still getting 4g.......anyone know the answer to why i'm getting worse signals??
The evo 3D only did the slow old 4G called wimax the new S4 uses LTE a new type of 4G that is 5 to 10 times faster than the old 4G it is slowly rolling out so be patient you can only use the new 4G on the S4.

Ha.. not the first salesman to lie, probably won't be the last.
I am in Tampa as well and when the phone is in cdma /lte mode, I get the 4g icon quite often. The problem is that date is very slow or non existent while on 4g. So I keep it on cdma only now.

Thanks for the reply from someone in Tampa....do you know when we are getting full LTE coverage? the salesman told me I could at least still get the 4g winmax coverage. Also, I head the phone doesn't have the icon for LTE so there is not way of knowing if we are in LTE....is that correct?
I have the galaxy s4, so I do not connect to the old wimax 4g. When my phone is showing a 4g connection, its LTE. However, Like i said, it's not fully implemented, at least that is my guess. Because date speeds are VERY slow or nonexistent even when show full bars with a 4g icon. I have seen the 4g icon in many places around tampa, but, 3g is faster so I leave the LTE mode off. As for when LTE is scheduled to be fully on, I don't know. I've been getting the same answer for a long time. "by the end of the year", is what they told me most of last year.
The GS4 does not have a wimax radio, so you can not pick up a wimax signal, only LTE. If it displays 4g, then you are getting an LTE signal.
You can use sensorly app on your phone to get a map of LTE in your area thats done by users.
