I stupidly dropped a screwdriver onto my screen, and its made a really annoying dent on the screen, so i'm going to try to get a replacement MDA Pro (Im still within my 30 days of starting my contract).
Obviously i'm not covered for accidental damage, so i was thinking of nuking it somehow, if i disconnect it mid-flash, will that put it beyond repair (from t-mobiles pov) and will they send a replacement? (Can they tell that, that is the cause of the fault?)
Thanks!
Probably not going to get anyone on the board to help you commit fraud but if you're industrious you can probabl figure something out.
I dont see them going for it.
You try to get it exchanged as not working when there is a dent in the screen?
Come up with a better excuse for the dent?
Like throw the whole thing at the floor and say someone knocked it out of your hand?
haha
twist the screen 360degrees does the trick  and is still under tmobile warrenty
I doubt you need to wreck it, there are so many imperfections. Does your camera show dead pixels (very highly likely it does) then that qualifies for exchange. Does the lid creak badly? Does the metal plate at the top sit properly? Is the keyboard slightly misaligned?
Look and ye shall find glitches. Almost guaranteed sorry to say.

Actually yeah, my camera has got loads, and my screen has got 2 dead pixel. Are you sure thats enough to get a replacement? I'm sure it'll look dodgy if i say that, and they decline it, then i call back a few days later and say 'oh no, it died!' lol
Am i right in thinking that i've got to do this within the first 30 days of my contract? (I didnt take out insurance) and im assuming ill get a brand new replacement, not a refurb?
Ohh and last thing, i read on t-mobile.com that they send out the replacement first, then ONCE you've recieved that, you then send out your phone, is that the same process here in the UK?
Thanks
its usually 28 days, not 30!
Unless it's an upgrade.... I was told 7 days, and that's what the paperwork says too.... and if it's a replacement, it'll be a refurb if they have one, otherwise new... least that's what it was last year....
Hmmm :/
Do they send the replacement before they receive yours?
I called T-Mob about a problem on mine which is outside the 7days, but well within the years warranty, they said I have two options...
1) Go to a T-Mobile store, where you can get a loan phone (an old nokia...) while yours is being repaired/replaced
2) They will send you a jiffy bag for pre-paid postage, post it off (no loan phone) and will replace/repair within 5 working days.
Don't know if this is the same if it's within your cancellation period....
Hmmm i'll probably take it to a store then.
If i DO decided to flash it, and pull the plug 1/2 way through, will they know for DEFINATE that it was due to me trying to flash it, and is it recoverable?
Thanks!

Don't know if it always is recoverable, but I've recovered a BA and a UNI that mucked up during flashing

dude do be careful when doing those since it would probably affect your microwave/house property warranty as well ...
That's a good point... is it worth risking it, just for a dent on a phone??
ok screw it, i have a plan:
Car battery + jump leads + MDA Pro = dead phone (at least, i hope!) lol
I Have done similar with a laptop months ago... I cut a usb cable in half and injected 15v (the power from the laptops actual charger) into the usb port fried the motherboad good and proper! and got a full replacement. hope this helps
You all do realise that this is *fraud*, carrying anything up to serious jailtime, we're discussing here? And that this is a medium where what you say is not only completely public, so accessible to (agents of) the people you're defrauding, but also permanently recorded to be used as evidence against you?
Furthermore, you do realise that defrauding HTC in this manner makes all the rest of our honest folk's devices that much more expensive?
Not to mention that if they refuse to honour your warranty, say because they know how to google, that you've gone from a fully functional PDA with a little dent to a doorstop.
just tell them that the dent was there when u got it, and didn't think to swap it straight away, act DUMB.
So I won a very nice looking MT3GS on eBay, knowing full well it was stuck in fastboot. The guy said it had a software problem just needed to be reflashed, but he didn't have an SD card so he didn't do it. $130 and all I have to do is reflash it? What a deal!
But after receiving it today and playing with it for several hours, I realized this wasn't going to be that simple. First, because the volume buttons don't do anything, so I can't move around in fastboot. And second, because after trying to insert an SD card, I noticed the writing on a microSD card which was already inside the slot but was broken in half...(ugh). So I took it apart and noticed this phone has obviously taken a swim...I also found the volume switch ribbon to be broken in half (ugh, again...), which I assume was from a botched drying attempt.
I'm trying to get my money back right now. I'm pretty furious. But if I can't, is there any hope for this thing? Could a faulty touch screen could be causing it to go into fastboot? I disconnected the display cable and powered it up, and the motor vibrates as if it's booting normally, but I don't know if that means anything.
If you don't get any response from the seller then there is another recourse. If you paid for the device through paypal then you can file a claim through them. Paypal will take care of contacting the seller. If they don't respond then they must give you your money back. If you can provide proof that the item was not as described then you should be fine.

This is precisely the case. The buyer protection policy allows you to put a claim in with PayPal. You basically state the phone has signs of water damage, and the claim is that water damage was not disclosed in the item description. They'll first pull the money from the seller, then ask you to send the phone to them. If they favor your side, you'll get the money and the seller will get the device back.
Do this: disassemble the phone, and soak it in denatured alcohol for a few minutes, let it air dry for about an hour and reassemble. But it has to be denatured alcohol, nothing else. The alcohol will make any leftover moisture evaporate.
That was the issue with my phone, the ebayer said it had taken a swim and was stuck in fast boot. Basically the buttons were shorting causing it to hold down the volume button.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, I was thinking the controls on the face are shorting out. That's what it acts like.
So I contacted the seller, and he was very sympethetic about the situation. He said he bought it from someone else and didn't know it was in this kind of condition. He said I could send it back for a full refund or keep and take a partial refund. I'm tempted to take the partial and fix the phone up, but I don't know how much of a refund I should ask for. How much do you think it's worth in its present condition?
I'd get your money back. The prices on these phones are dropping fast, so I don't see much point in trying to flip it.
I think u should keep it and ask him to send you $70-$80 back then try an fix it...atleast that's what I would do.

Decided to take Megan's advice, as I like a good challenge. The seller (who turned out to be awesome btw) agreed to my offer, so I wound up paying $40 shipped for it. I can live with that. Time to fully disassemble it and work some magic...

Hey keep us updated, not sure about smart phones but the freezer trick always worked for me on the older flip phones for water swims.
my laptop i spilled water all over it, and it stopped working, took out hard drive, cd drive, etc, and i soaked the motherboard in Alchohol for an hour and then let it dry for a week, put it all together and it worked again, only thing i had to replace was the keyboard which was 20 bucks on ebay.
I just dropped my phone and the hinge flew open. On the side near the power button, the joint pulled away and now the phone doesn't slide correctly since the hinge is dislocated. Can I fix it myself? It doesn't seem to have broken anything, just pulled out of socket or something. I'm not really sure how the hinge was connected in the first place so I don't know whether it just needs to be pushed back in or what. I attached some pictures of it too.
Based on that first photo it appears that you sheared a pin off somehow - the one that the main crossbar hooks onto. If that's the case, I don't know how you'd easily repair it.
Ooowwcchh....!
Well I have insurance with t-mobile, but I'm rooted running CM6.1 so I don't want to try to get it replaced and get screwed over. Any advice for that?

Talk to Customer Service (dial 611) and tell them the hinge came apart (I wouldnt mention dropping it unless its obvious that its been dropped) and they'll offer to send you a new one. If they wont send you a new one (which would surprise me, they're pretty good about stuff like that, especially known issues like the hinge) then you'll need to make a claim on your insurance. If they send you a new one without making an insurance claim then you can wait until you get your new one, make a back up, and then return your phone to stock/unroot before you send it back. There are threads here explaining how to do that. I've never made a claim through my insurance with TMobile, so I'm not entirely sure how that works. You might have to unroot/return to stock before you take it to the store. If you can call your insurance and make a claim then it might work the same way and you can wait until they send the new one.
Edit: After looking at the pictures, it doesnt look like there's obvious damage, so you should be home free on not admitting its been dropped.
I just threw up a little.

Posting pictures of it won't help you. You need to take it apart and reinstall the hinge. If it broke a pin or something, find something to replace it, then reassemble. Don't listen to anybody who says you can't fix it... EVERYTHING can be fixed. Especially simple/stupid mechanical things.
Looks like you broke it in the spring box, heres a pic of it from the inside, there are guides on tearing apart your G2 but I dont know how that will affect the insurance, if you have to return it under insurance and your worried about being rooted there are guides to unroot the phone.
Yeah, it seems like it's definitely worth it just to unroot and return it like I never rooted it to begin with. Tearing it apart is sketchy and I don't know how successful I'd be in the first place, I'd probably just screw it up more.
So I'm assuming this is the go-to guide for unrooting: http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/01/how-to-unroot-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision/
Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks guys for all the input

Note that your warranty doesn't cover this type of damage.
Why wouldn't it? Are you saying that because I dropped it or because it's physical damage regardless?
Also, does anyone know what the deductable is for getting it replaced if I go the insurance route?

Warranty only covers DEFECTS. It doesn't cover things that you cause. You dropped it, thereby causing the physical damage, you therefore have no warranty. Its all gone. None left.
insurance deductible is $130. better off calling tmo and just saying you have a loose hinge, since it's a known issue, they'll replace it. Don't say it's popped out.
Woops don't know what happend to the pic I posted but here it is again:
that looks awful to try to fix...I was watching the video that someone made about taking the hinge apart and it looked really intense. How would I got about even finding a new pin/spring or whatever?
I wouldn't mention anything about dropping it and just say it has a loose hinge, worse comes to worse blame it on the shipping and an already loose hinge.

they wont replace it... at least they did not to me... they went on and on that is the way the hinge was designed and crap like that...
i think you are better off if you just pay the 130 deductible, and just report the phone lost and a new phone will be on its way next business day.

Not necessarily true.
As long as there is no evidence that the device has been dropped/abused/dunked into a bucket of water T-Mobile might try to protest but ultimately this can be deemed as a defective device.
You pay for insurance. Its a disaster clause too. Not a warrentee. You could brick your phone and tell them about it and they will replace it. Its the point of insurance. Warrentee is different. Keep in mind, you pay 130 deductable to replace a phone. Don't worry about cm6. They are also not allowed to assume you will root your new phone either. So even if they boot to a cm6 logo they still have to replace your phone since you pay for insurance and the deductible.

Edit: I was damn tired when I wrote this. Dunno how much sense it makes..
Unexpectedly got soaked with seawater on vacation with my nexus in my pocket. First of all, out of all of us two cameras, a Samsung midrange android phone, and one of those brick like old Nokia phones all were casualties - only my nexus 4 survived. I think that is pretty impressive.
anyway, it didn't make it through unscathed. The mic does not work and also the gyroscope is pretty wonky. everything else appears intact.
as this was water damage I'm assuming no warranty will cover it. my question is what's the best option at this point and how much is it going to cost?
send it to Google / LG for repair? Try one of these cell phone stores that claim they can repair broken phones? Try and find the part and fix it myself? or just buy a new phone? what's going to be the cheapest?
I would recommend to sell it. The phone is water damaged. Even if you send it to LG or take it to shop to repair mic or gyroscope; other problems will appear sooner or later.

I figured that's probably the best option. Is there no way to tinker around and try and replace the mic with parts that are available on eBay or something until I get together enough cash for another nexus?

There is. Just follow
and replace as necessary. Not sure how long the parts will last. There is a chance that the motherboard would just burn off one day.
My mic has failed too (as well as a portion of my digitizer ugh) and I have decided to order a mic from ebay for $15, I've already opened the N4 up and its super easy to replace so I would say replace it and while your in there look for any corrosion (will look white and chalky) and clean it off with a q-tip and 99% isopropyl alcohol
Water damaged MIC, ordered replacement usb charge port from ebay for £12. Using the video posted, I was able to successfully replaced my fault MIC, phone is working as per normal.
I ordered one from eBay but it looks different from the original. You guys think I should install or send it back? This one has two antenna connections but the original only has one.

Today i opened a Nexus4 of a collague.
After the Nexus fell in car it had a gap in cover. When opened we saw that the battery was "newly formed"^^
Ok, trying to extract battery - dont like to put force to it when lying at the display. One Screw ok, the other one refused strictly access to battery.
So i damaged the screw. Will replace it when new battery arrives. But i had no tool to get measures of that screw.
In service manual at page 266 i am not sure which screws are for battery, maybe GMEY0018101 which is M1.4x1.5 - maybe^^
But if this is the right one - where do i buy it in Europe? Only affordable i found was in Australia...
So maybe you can help me:
Which is the right screw holding the battery of the N4?
Which are the measures of that screw?
And the most important one: Where may i buy it w/o paying as if broken the display^^
Thank you.

Looking for the same screw in Israel
As described ifound: Service Manual, page 266, i am not 100% sure which screw - but the most likely is GMEY0018101.
Google gave me an australian Service Center.
It (can not link it by forum policy) defines the screw as GMEY0018101,1.4 mm,1.5 mm,SWCH18A ,B ,TRI , LG Spare Part for Mobile Phones KF900(LG Spare Part forMobile Phones ,KF510 ,KF700 ,KF900)
With that i googled "LG service center". Got a page at lg.com where a shop is linked. In this shop i entered the LG-Partsnumber. Less than 3€ per screw. But shipping is a bit expensive at 7€. 10€ overall for one screw... 13€ for both. hmmm...
But "better than nothing".
