i have multiple access points in my home. my blackberry has an option to switch from access point to access poimnt automatically. is there an option in android to do this as well? im finding that i have to disable and re-enable wifi to connect.
once the ap is saved in the phone it should automatically connect to the new one once the signal from the old one is dropped. i usually have no problem with mine switching between my inside and outside routers.

---Intro---
I have a one week old Wizard (Cingular 8125 variant). It has one of the latest roms with AKU2 on it. Using Registry Wizard, I selected the option to add wireless G compatibility at some point in time. Wireless initially worked after setting my phone and router up per a tutorial on a popular Axim users forum. A day or two later I went to use WIFI and I get nothing. GPRS/EDGE initially worked also, but at the same time it stopped working. I've spent countless hours since trying everything I possibly can to get WIFI to work.
---The problem---
I am not able to connect to the wireless router. My Wizard sits on "connecting" forever then maybe 5 mins later it says unable to obtain an IP address. When I look at the status, it says 0.0.0.0 for the IP address the whole time it says connecting. Since the problem started, I have yet to actually connect using any settings. The first day I configured the wireless it worked perfectly, with WAP encryption and all.
---Some of what I have tried---
On my US Robotics wireless router I've turned mac filtering and all security settings off, making an open network. I removed the WAP setting for the connection on the Wizard as well. I've tried all the suggestions I can find on any WM 5 and 2003se related forums to no avail. I've tried all the various combinations of limiting to B/G only or mixed, using work/internet settings, and deleting WIFI connections and creating new ones. I don't have a proxy setting in any of my connections. The whole time my battery usage is set to the highest (performance) setting and I'm right next to the wireless router. I've tried turning off all proprietary speed enhancement options. I even installed a program (Pocket DHCP) recommended by Axim PPC users to figure out why I'm not receiving an IP. Since I'm not really a DHCP wiz, I can't tell from the results what is causing this.
I'd be greatful if anyone can help me with figuring this one out. Thanks in advance!
maybe a dumb question, but...the wireless part of the router is working fine? did u tryed with a laptop or pc?
did u tried a hard reset?
That's actually a great question. I did connect fine the first day I configured the wireless and made no changes from then until it stopped working, so I'm just assuming that the router is working properly. Unfortunately I don't have access to any other wireless device/laptop to test it with.
I'm getting ready to do a hard reset right now. I was really wanting to avoid this but I think I have no other option. Hopefully this will fix whatever setting was messed up. I have a slight hunch that the registry change for allowing G access was the cause of the problems.
maybe i missed this in the original post, but have you tried making your device use static ip's on the lan instead of dhcp?

I didn't try static IP's for two reasons. 1. Firstly I couldn't figure out how to set this up. 2. I don't want to have to fiddle with removing the static IP when I'm away from home trying to use a different wifi hotspot. I would like it to be seamless and just connect when I turn wifi on near any unsecured network (other than the usual pressing OK to connect).
STATUS UPDATE:
I did a hard reset and directly after this I tried to connect to my open network. Amazingly GPRS/EDGE now works, but WIFI still does not. Then I did a factory reset on my USR router then changed the settings back to how it was just set before. Now, I'm connecting. This doesn't make any sense since the settings are the same now but it's working, maybe theres a glitch with the router that this fixed. This small progress seams like a miracle.
Now that I can connect to WI-FI, I have a new problem. When I try to load pages in internet explorer, it says page not found or whatever the standard error message is. I'm so close I can smell it. There must be some setting that needs to be changed on my Wizard.
SUCCESS
I report that I am now absolutely delighted with network connection on my Wizard. After hard reseting the phone and the router, now I can connect to both WIFI and GPRS. Not only that... but also PIE will choose WIFI if I'm connected to a wireless router, otherwise it will default to GPRS/EDGE without any interaction from me. This stuff is really awesome when it works. It is difficult to setup correctly though.
somehow wifi routers r not 100% reliable, every now and then i need to reset my linksys or i cant get ip as in your case...but with a normal reset is enough in my case...
That's good to know. Maybe I didn't even need to hard reset my Wizard, just the router. Now I know to start with the router because it's much easier to reconfigure. This is the first time that I've implemented WIFI on my own network. What happens if a public WIFI spot won't give you an IP anymore? Surely you just can't go and reset it. Granted it's not nearly as old as Ethernet, WIFI has been out for long enough that you think they would have these major kinks worked out.

How did you manage this? I have been struggling for ages to set things up this way. Can you post your settings from settings>connections>connections>advanced>select networks. Also settings>connections>network cards.
I would like to be able to just turn on wlan from comm manager and use wifi to surf and connect to my wireless lan, but if no wifi available to default to my T-mobile gprs connection for surfing. Currently having to manually change the settings "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using" My Work Network or Tmobile gprs each time I want to use either.
What I want is the option
if wifi available
use wifi
else use gprs
Well my friends and I were like sitting around drinking foo-foo drinks and I just like stumbled upon the answer. Just kidding, it's fun to play the role of your avatar, especially mine.
Settings, Connections tab, Network Cards, Network Adapters tab: My network card connects to Internet
Settings, Connections tab, Connections, Advanced tab, Select Networks: Set first one to My work network. Set second one to MediaNet (or your gprs/edge/etc connection profile).
Now with those set, edit the My Work Network profile and make sure that under the proxy tab check connects to the internet option, uncheck the proxy option. Now edit your MediaNet (or other carrier data plan) and make sure that this contains all options for your carrier like proxy, modem, etc. If you are a Cingular user, go here to verify all settings for medianet. (Note that you will ignore the beginning couple steps when they say to place medianet first in the "select networks" settings. Start after step 6. When you connect to your WIFI router first and it asks you if it's work or internet, always select internet. If you are not sure what it's set at, go out of range or unplug your router. Go into network cards and find your router SID, click and hold on it and select remove. Then when you try to connect to your WIFI again it will prompt you for this, make sure you use internet setting.
Now if you have done everything correctly, Internet Explorer will use WIFI when it's turned on and you get a connection. All other times it will default to GPRS/EDGE. I can go from one to the other back and forth without changing any settings, only enabling and disabling WIFI in the comm manager.

Linksys WRT54Gx? if yes look into dd-wrt . stable and has a lot of features . other hardware is supported as well just check on their webby.

I have read many many many posts about people having issues with the wizard and that exact router... I personally would stay away from linksys.. i work in a field that deal with 3rd party routers and such, anytime an end user has a linksys i can usually prove 90% of the time that its the culprit (80% of the time powercycling it does the trick)

Using the Off the shelf Verizon ROM with nothing else installed. the phone does NOT have a data plan.
When I turn on WiFi I am able to see all the networks but am unable to connect to any of them (secure or unsecure). The phone goes into "Connecting" mode and never connects to it. I've tried an open wifi (the one at starbucks), a WEP enabled wireless network (and yes I did put in the Netkey/password), and now a WPA network. All with the same result.
Everytime I try to do anything data related it tries to dial the #777 and do PPP over the cell line.
Is there anywhere/anyway to drop the Verizon Data Network. I deleted it and it comes right back each time.

Well there is no way to delete but there is a way to stop accidently dialing #777 by going to start>settings>connections tab>connections>Then under the carries's name (mine says sprint) there should be 3 clickable links click the one called Manage Existing connections>Press new>The setup will tell u how to do it for connection name i just used my name u can use anything you want press next after that>When it asked for the number dialed put #777 press next>It will take u to a login page Make a username BUT DON'T MAKE A PASS DO NOT MAKE A PASSWORD then press finish and choose the one you just made as ur primary one (put a dot in the little circle next to the name of the connection u just made) then press ok now test it out by hitting the internet button without the wifi on or anything if you did it right it should take you to a login page that you can just close to stop yourself dialeng #777
This is probably not the case, but if you can't even connect to unsecure networks, the signal strength is probably too weak. (Probably not the case if you are sitting right into the Starbucks)
I blocked data access on my phone and never went though the wizard on the phone. My phone doesn't even attempt to dial or do anything if i am not connected via ActiveSync or WiFi. Maybe you have a defective phone? Good luck.
Stock VZW ROM will have the default wifi power settings wrong to actually be able to connect to anything. Fix this by going to Settings-Connections-Wireless LAN-Power Mode and moving the slider all the way to Best Performance. This should enable you to connect to access points.

I always wondered what that power slider actually changes. I usually leave mine on best battery and still connect to my home network. What does best performance change?
I have a Nexus 4. I'm currently on 4.3. My phone auto-connects to every single open wifi network I walk past. Starbucks, McDonalds, Nordstroms, etc... every single one. I've tried both setting and not setting the "Notify me of open networks" option in the Wifi settings. No difference. Well there is, one setting just causes it to silently connect. I have NOT connected to these networks before. At the end of the day I have like 15 AP's queued up in my list that I have to delete.
This might be the most pants-on-head retarded design I have ever seen in a phone. I have only a few productivity apps on my phones. None of them meddle with wifi settings as far as I can tell. So, can anyone help me? Please don't offer me the advice of turning wifi off. I understand that is the kill-all for this, but it's akin to suggesting that longer battery life can be had by turning the phone off between charges. There has to be some option I am missing that is a never-connect-to-open option. I bounce between client offices all day and I need wifi to work smoothly.
Yup, same here. I've disabled the setting to notify me when an open notification is available, and it just connects to all and sundry, often causing me to lose connection with a server. Anybody aware of a fix for this? Do I need to root my Nexus 4 first?

Set your WiFi to be active on your network only, uncheck open networks, and select manage networks to a single AP, yours.
I manage a single connection on my Droid X, and 'forget' all other networks, and do not store any network data from these either.
This is the only way I am certain my phone will not look for other networks, but then again, you can turn off 'Update over WiFi only' as well.
Deselect anything that will cause the phone to look for a WiFi AP, but also remember that once done, your apps such as Email and FB may still attempt to update via the phone's network and not WiFi.

Here is the strange things, when I came in to the range of wpa security wifi, my phone auto connect to the wifi network, everything is ok. When I came in to the open wifi networks area, my phone does not connect to the open wifi, even though it is saved, but I can mannual connect to the wifi.
So, why ? and how can I let my phone connect the saved open wifi auto?

In advanced there is an option, cant remember it now, been too long since I looked at it, (a week :silly.
Something about switching to mobile networks if you lose your wifi. Make sure that is turned on, else the device decides a wifi connection is 'bad' instead of just out of range and won't remember it.

Thanks for your reply. I searched the menu which you mentioned, try every option that can select or unselect, unfortunately it won't work.
My device can connect an secure wifi auto when the signal is fair, but can not connect to an open wifi, only work by manual pick it.
Trying to get internet access on my head unit without paying for a hotspot. I'm aware of PDANet and have used it, but it's sometimes unreliable to get a connection at first and requires restarting it several times. I'm looking for a more automatic solution that will connect as soon as I start the car. Any advice?
I bought a Huawei E8372 LTE stick. It provides both a WiFi access point and a USB ethernet interface that works with my Eonon GA9498B, so I basically disabled the WiFi entirely for the time being. Setting up the stick can easily be done by inserting the SIM card, plugging it into your computer, navigating with your browser to the IP address mentioned in the manual; it's advisable to deactivate the SIM PIN so the stick can just boot and establish the mobile connection without having to enter the PIN every time you turn off and on your car. Boot time for the stick is 20-30s max, so the connection is basically already available as soon as the radio's main screen appears.
Just watch out: I haven't yet found a possibility to mark the ethernet connection as metered in Android, so apps which have different data transfer behavior depending on whether you're on a WiFi or a mobile connection will go on full data blast mode if you don't tell them not to. Take Spotify, for example: If you have marked songs for download, the app will synchronize all changes right away via the LTE connection, even if you've configured Spotify to only do that on WiFi connections. So what I do is putting Spotify in offline mode by default, and only change that when I'm at home and the radio is connected to my WiFi (which luckily takes precedence over the USB-ethernet connection). Same goes for my HERE WeGo offline maps: I configured it to download them manually, so it only checks for map updates and notifies me, and I can download them when I'm home. Google Maps is pretty spare about its data usage anyway, so no need to change anything here. I also disabled automatic updates in Play Store, so it just notifies me of available updates which I can then install when I'm back home.
This COULD be avoided by activating the stick's WiFi hotspot, connecting the radio via WiFi and then, in Android's data usage settings, mark the WiFi network as metered. I tried that once, and it wasn't all too reliable - Android keeps forgetting these settings irregularly (the WiFi is shown as metered in Android's settings after I changed that setting; will stay like that for a while whenever I take a look again; and at some indeterminate point will show "Automatic" again, which means it's being treated like your cable router in your living room again) and doesn't tell you so at all, so apps might first behave correctly (i.e. like they're using mobile network), and later recognize their environment as being in an unlimited WiFi network and download everything they do in the background, eating up your mobile data. Thus I rather control each app's settings in this regard manually.
