Its indeed very surprising. My legend can't bear so much stress. It goes damn slow and sluggish when the free memory drops below 50MB

Is the Hero dying?

Hi guys.
I've been on the Hero forums since March and back then I used to see new roms every day, every day there was something new that added functionality to our Heroes made by great devs like RaduG,Maxisma,Hacre(aka Ninpo),erasmux,Elemag and many others that I am sorry for not remembering. It even got official CyanogenMod support sometime. But now?The dev section is almost dead, little to no roms are made/updated and nearly everyone has abandoned it.Is the Hero dead already?

Well yes a lot of people has left but I think there is pretty many updates anyway. I mean both Feeyo and Hacre releases a lot of updates and elelinux too. Also what more is there to do now than small things? I mean we certainly don't need more 2.1 ROMs

You say there is more dev for the G1. This is because most of the dev starts at the G1 (the original device) and then gets integrated into Hero rom's etc. A lot of the dev that goes on in the G1 forums is quickly and seamlessly integrated into the stuff being developed here, or support for the Hero is added later on but details are kept in the G1 forum post. Either way there is little difference between the stuff we get on the Hero to that on the G1.
I think it is dying, im spending more and more time in O.topic But realy the only things left are sense on 2.2 and a .34 kernel with an awesome jit compiler to get me 20mflops , because i doubt we will be getting Gingrbread and even if we did it would be slow as hell, being that reccomended specs are 1Ghz and we'd have to have a 3.5" screen so i think weve ended at froyo

I think the Desire Z is the better of the two phones (which is why I have it pre-ordered rather than the HD).

Now HOW can we get in contact with CM!?
cm have website with forum, so we cas ask there, but we should wait, all the last htc phone have vision of cm, so we can guess that the desire hd will not be so different.
btw: same hare, nexus one - sold DHD - in
When the desire HD is rooted someone will port CM to the Desire HD, As its a HTC phone it should be fairly easy in comparison to other devices such as Galaxy S.
We will just need ROOT and prefrably HTC to realese the kernel scource firly soon after realease.

I's not, though. Sure, it's a better choice for you if you want the physical keyboard, but that's really the only thing that's "better". Specs-wise the DHD is a better piece of hardware.

@RoadHazard
For people like me Desire HD is the only option.
Thing is, i can't deal with physical keyboards anymore.
Using Swype onscreen keyboard is 10 times faster.

SGS is dead in the water now this beast is soon to drop... I played with a SGS last week and other than the pretty screen, its pretty average, maybe below average;(

Really ?? I'm interested how you came to the conclusion the SGS is "average" ?
Sure the phone has some minor "hiccups" that I'm sure will be worked out once the Froyo final drops.

General usage query - is the wildfire any good?

Hi folks.
My gf had been offered a wildfire as an option for a work phone and she asked me if it's worth getting. This will be her first step outside the Nokia candy bar phone world.
Using a desire myself I cannot seem to offer any help as I have no idea how the lighter specs on the wildfire effect the whole android/sense experience. Web reviews tend to state that it's good for the price, whatever that means, or that it's slower and lower res than phones costing twice as much - not a fair comparison.
So, if you're just after a phone to text, call, email, calendar, gps navigate, occasionally jump on the web and tether to a laptop does the wildfire stack up?
Any guidance from users (esp those who've made a similar jump) would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Nitens.

For the uses mentioned wildfire will surely do the purpose

Yes, it will be perfectly fine for the purposes you have described, although getting used to the touch keyboard will be a little bit steep after being only on Nokia candybars. Check my sig.

I think it will stack up pretty good, I am certainly happy with mine. As long as you don't want mobile gaming the Wildfire is a very nice phone.
Excuse me if I am off-topic, but I think it's no good opening a new thread.
My daily usage is similar to the OP. One question about playing video on wildfire.
If I convert some with reasonable resolution e.g. 240x320, will it play without any lag?
Also, with the wildfire specs, will it be the problem with future releases of android?
I didn't mean in the official way, but ability to messing with roms e.g. CM7 will be good.
(just need opinions)
Thanks in advance.
I did the same jump!
I am very pleased with the opportunities the Wildfire gives me.
I came from using traditional phones as nokia 6230 (Yeah old phone). I used it on stock rom for 4 months, which was good enough for the things you mention, but then i finished my exams and wanted to play with the phone. Now i am on cyanogenmod, since i wanted the extra performance so i could play games and nerd around with it.
I would say she should go for it.
Hope my post can help her to make the decision.

240x320 videos should play nice on the Wildfire, but, do check the format first.
Secondly, so far, the future roadmap of Android is not known. Gingerbread is out (Which will come on the Wildfire, courtesy CM7). The next known Android version is Honeycomb (3.0), which is optimized for tablets, and, will definitely not work on the wildfire due to its high system requirements (High Res Screen, 1GHz CPU, 512 MB RAM).
After Honeycomb, the next version for the smartphone devices is still not known, as stated above (Its probably named Ice Cream), and hence, speculating it at this point of time whether it will work on the wildfire or not is no good.

Yes, video plays fine. You want a H.264 video stream (Baseline Profile, Level 1.3) in a MP4 container.
The video will be pixelated compared to a iphone due to the low screen res

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like a no brainer that this device will run the simple smartphone tasks relatively well. Thumbs up have been passed onto her.
I can see that this is the start of a slippery slope, and she'll be coveting my desire (or the next shiny new android hotness) in no time. May provide me with an excuse to get and upgrade and hand her the desire.

you got a point gingerbread is where to be its much better then froyo to me ^_^
The older the hardware is, the less likely it is that people will stick around working on it. Also be aware that most of your list is made up of non-devs.
Most people who worked on Dream have gone to VISION. At some point, you should consider the fact that although Dream was a revolutionary piece of hardware, it is now OLD.

Well, the Vogue has been out for a looong time and it still is in support (miraculously).

The G1 still gets more rom development than the G2 (although it's started to even out). Maybe some devs are leaving, but there are plenty left.

G1 has the best support ever from devs and it should as it's the OG android device of them all. I will probaly check out the lg optimus2x or htc pyramid next as I believe those are the game changers that will have the same/hopefully better support even then g1.

Last time I tryied Ginger Yoshi the phone was unstable, slow and most of the time the notification bar crashed, the work the developers are doing is great but it's true the G1 is old and lacks, a lot, ram.

Probably for another year or so, depending on the releases of the phones at the time. If i can get my hands on the new HTC Flyer when it comes out in Canada/US, it might extend my time with the DZ/G2 however.
Until AT&T suckes up TMobile.
Not investing in another phone before that happens, and certainly NOT staying as an AT&T customer once it does.

What 2gigs back and what rom?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
HTC phones can last pretty long. My 3.5 year old Tilt/Kaiser still works great (just some cosmetic dings, and normal wear and tear). And I'm sure there are plenty of folks with much older HTC devices around here. I have a friend still rocking the G1, with another whose G1 just died. Of course, electronic devices can fail at any time. But on average, HTC phones are pretty durable. I expect to get tired of my Vision long before it fails. I seem to be moving to a 1-year phone upgrade cycle lately.
mine is usually a year too but for some reason id like to keep it for longer, bit no doubt that will fade in a month r so
I love mine, the only thing I miss so bad is a Front Facing Cam. If and when HTC releases another phone with a Keyboard and a FFC, which I can use with Wind/T-Mobile, I am going for it, until then, will stick to my G2.

He didn't get the 2 gigs back, he uses pyromod which doesn't use the internal space for apps. what I dont understand is why these people think you need that 2 gigs if you aren't even going to use the internal space anyway... These data to sdext roms make absolutely no sense.
