Does anyone know if its possible to remove or disable HSPA+ from a rom? I just wanna use 3G cause the HSPA+ is just to slow?

That doesn't make sense.
It's almost like saying 3G is slower than Edge.
How's your signal strengh?
HSPA+ is a faux 4G standard, you can't utilise HSPA+ on an HTC Magic.
Same here
I also have the same problem. I understand HSPA+ is supposed to be faster, but it runs really slow on my G1. Getting back to the point, does anyone know how to disable it? I am running Biffmod 2.1

OP. Shouldn't HSPA+ be faster. Im pretty sure our phones (HTC MAGIC) doesnt support it. The 4G and the G2 do support the HSPA+. I think u are using 3G, but the coverage is just bad in your area. Try going to the closest "big" city, tmo likes spamming hspa towers there

You're confusing HSPA+ (which your phone does not support) with HSPA, HSPA is part of the 3G standard which allows higher bandwidth. Due to a number of factors, such as how bandwidth is split among users, this does not mean you will get faster speeds, just that the network has the capacity to carry them.
What ROM are you using?

For those not interested in debating the theoretical speeds of T-Mobile's 3G and 4G service with the OP on a 3G only device -
Yes, do a search on editing the build.prop file in your system folder.
Find ro.ril.hsxpa and set to ro.ril.hsxpa=0
Individual results vary, may have to reboot more than once to flush the old settings. If it really really sucks, just change it back.
Kind Regards,
Kevin

I have crappy signal with my 01 A model G2. I replaced it to fix the loose hinge issue but this one came with an issue of its own, signal dropping. . .For example when I am on a call signal drops to GPRS or the signal will fluctate violently from HSPDA to no signal during regular use. Does anyone else have those issues with their replacement? I am trying to get a replacement, but they haven't recieved my old phone yet so I cant get one yet.
Don't let me get started on the slow data speeds on HSDPA ;(.
I was having the same problem with my first g2 but I just got the replacement and this one works great ..

You can have your G2 replaced to fix the hinge issue? If so, by whom, and what if you're permarooted? Sorry if this was mentioned elsewhere, I haven't really checked sections other than development. Thanks!

That's cool, but no one has enough info to even help you. Signal and the HSPA speeds have little to do with the device and virtually everything to do with network and location. What's your typical dBm on HSDPA? What were your old speeds averaging? Do you have the OTA installed?
Beyond that, did you try calling tmo? There may be data issues in your area and if not, they can always file a trouble ticket for your MSISDN for 3G data speeds.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Its not speeds or anything specific. Its just darn right slow lol, much laggier than my old one for some odd reason. Of course I had it replaced with T-Mobile and I called them to see if the G2 I sent them has reached them yet and it hasn't. . .I did OTA as the radio I posted in my sig is from the OTA.
Also yes you can have T-Mobile warranty replace your G2 or HTC.
Why do you expect HSDPA to be fast? It's only 3G... HSPA+ is the fast network.

I think he's referring to HSPA in general and regardless on the Android devices it won't ever indicate if you're in HSPA+ - it just states HSDPA in the phone/net information.

It's all relative. 3G data speeds were a lot faster than 2G (GSM). HSDPA is a lot faster than basic 3G data. HSPA+ is a lot faster than HSDPA.
But of course it all depends what speeds you actually achieve within those bands, too.
Ok. I've pulled the images from the EVO dump of the 4G connection notification symbol...but how would I link them in a custom framework-res.apk to appear whenever I am connected to HSPA+? I would like to know when I have "4g Speeds" without going to About Phone, then Network.
This would be nice!

Has there been any developements on this subject. Would be really nice to know when I am in 3G or a 4G area. It really should have came that way new
I would also love to see this in somebodys rom!
They could replace the 3G with a 4G, but not both because t-mobiles network is the same tech, just upgraded.
There is no way for your phone to distinguish this in the actual rom. Sorry if this dashes hopes.

The phone's "about phone" section under settings can detect the difference between 3G (UMTS-HSPDA) and 4G (HSPA+), so why couldn't the same info be passed on to the ROM's data indicator?
Why would you want "4G" when the phone is not "4G"....
"H" is good enough for me. it is HSPA+

If you want to be "honest about it" Speed requirements for 4G are the peak download speeds are 100Mbits/S for mobile means of communications. HSPA+ is only capable of speeds around 56Mbits/S download.
Technically they (the ITU) have stated our current technology is "4G". but it all honesty, it's only like 3.8G.
Normally that would be true but now legally due to the recent FFC ruling HSPA+ is considered 4G as part of another marketing gimmick by wireless provider. As they all wanted to push for it so now HSPA+ 21 now divide that by half is actually capped on the phone now divide that by half again and thats your actual speed lol. This is why TMo got away with claiming to be the largest 4G network in USA lol hence no one revolted not Sprint or Verizon as TMo beat them at their own game. As delivering 4G in 2010 is just another inside joke you won't believe how many morons would pay or upgrade their dataplan thinking 4G is better without actually getting anything IRL. I had an idiot who argue with me he was getting 4G service on a device that was not even 4G capable. I had to explain to him he is benefiting from the network upgrade but its still HSPA.

Yea i agree. I just cannot wait to see what is going to happen with true "4g" starts to roll out.
"Here at ____ have the first 4G system"
"wait i thought you said had 4G back in 2011"
"we did but that wasn't 4G, this IS 4G"
if we cant get the 4g to appear up at the top notification bar why cant we just create an application that polls the about phone for the HSPA+ or UMTS-HSPA and display an icon on the desktop that tells us which one it is? its not the best solution but at least when i'm on the home screen i can tell if i'm on 3G or 4G
THAT would be sooo cook. I hope someone figures out how to do it.

Okay but "H" isn't what T-Mobile calls 4G. "H" just means HSPA, not HSPA+. The Mytouch 3G was capable of "H" speeds.
I have seen screenshots from Inspire 4G where you get an "H+" icon in HSPA+ to differentiate it from just plain HSPA. Maybe someone can figure out how to port that distinction over to your phone?

I’ve heard that it may be possible to Mod the HD2 to run on T-mobiles 4G network. Anyone know if this is true, or if it’s even possible? I’ve tried searching the forum and haven’t found anything on this topic.
yes it is. certain roms support the hspa bands for tmobile you just need to look them up. and btw its not REALLY 4g..... but its fast and has good coverage
no it can not..... t-mo "4g" is HSPA+ ...so the radio in the HD2 is only a HSPA...but it does benefit from the HSPA+ because there is a speed increase but just not 4g speeds.
correct me if I'm wrong
Cool, I’ll try and find a Android ROM that supports hspa, Thank you for the Info and reply’s. Any recommendations?

Ill try it out. Thank you.
The radio inside the HD2 is only capable to support HSDPA up to 7.2Mb/s.
HSPA+ Is what T-mobile calls "4G" It really has a theoretical speed of 21Mb/s a second, meaning that phones with HSPA+ Capable radios are seeing a roughly 10Mb/s on average. You're mileage may vary depending on how close you are to a cell tower.
HSPA+ Also has the benefit of providing more Infrastructure behind it to support the growing network. Meaning that the old HSPDA network will have more resources to tap out at its 7.2Mb/s ceiling.
In plain English your seeing more of that speed then if T-Mobile never upgraded, think of it as a speed increase for the price of nothing.
TL;DR
HSPA+ Provides more bandwith to HSPDA, making your phone have faster 3g speeds. Its not 4G.
P.S. Nothing is 4G yet, Not even the LTE that Verizon is offering. Its all a marketing gimmick.

ATT, for whatever reason dumbs down their phones to not distinguish between the older UMTS 3G and HS*PA flavors which are technically 3.5G. Most unlocked (read non-ATT) phones on ATT will show up as H when they're getting their fastest speeds, although I have an old Nokia that actually has a '3.5G' indicator.
In short, if your phone says 'H', it's better than '3G'.

When I updated thru the QDL tool, I had the H on the 305 or 309 (whichever one it was)...then when I put DJSteve's 1.5.1 on my Streak, it went back to 3G.
Two questions:
1. Can I go into the build.prop files and change a line somewhere to get the H back?
2. If the answer to Q1 is yes, is it really going to get the faster speed, or is it just gonna give me the H instead of the 3G symbol?

anyways. its not european, its hsdpa not hspda. and the reason you see 3g instead of hspa on att devices can be for multiple reason. the obvious is that people see it and think "herp derp, im not on 3g! att suxors". another reason is that it will just show up as 3g on android 1.6 on most any device. and unless its told to show, if hsUpa is deactivated, the H wont show and att has made it a habit to remove hsupa from as many phones of theirs as they can.

I would check what you have it set to under phone options, dail *#*#4636#*#*, and check what band you have selected, as well as correct APN settings.
ATT's 4G bands are not the same at T-Mobile's 4G bands. Wont work no way no how.

AT&T is using 1900 MHz (850 MHz in some markets) for 3G. T-Mobile will use 1700 MHz for download and 2100 MHz for upload or pretend I didn't say anything and keep trying something that isn't doable. that's your call
like jay says it doesn't have the correct network band antennas,
just sell it, new smartphones are coming out weekly.
and 4G is gimmicky, best of luck,

I hate to burst your bubble but there is no way you are going to get the AT&T device to work on T-Mobile's 3G, nevermind "4G"/HSPA. Sorry.
right... It has to do with the phone and the hardware... aka - the stuff they build the phone with. Its like if you try to use a phone to receive xm radio frequencies... it's not going to work... If you have a phone with the ATT bands they will NEVER work the same on Tmobile. But you can get Edge on any GSM network. Hope this helps. Search for att cellular bands on Google and compare them with Tmobile cellular bands.
Sorry to say it but the guys are correct! ALL of the AT&T 4G phone are quad band GSM phones! They work on the 850/1900 frequencies for all data and communication purposes in the USA! T-Mobile uses 1700! So basically you should have done a little more homework before you ran out and spent all that money!
If you are lucky you can still sell it and maybe get your money back!
