use the unlockr's 1 click root. It's the fastest way to do it. Or you could go the old fashioned way and create a gold card and do it that way.
If your confused by what root is, and why you need it:
Root is just a name for the super user or administrator login account (the root account). This is what the main account has been called forever in *nix operating systems since the beginning 30+ years ago.
It is the login that has all privileges like read/write to all directories and can start any process(well almost) that it wants.
The reason you would want this would be for things like tethering where you need to run processes that make direct hardware calls and have access to things like iptables / ipchains (the ability to reroute internet traffic). Other things would be like backup your entire phone or run apps from your sd card.
Hope that helps a little.
read the threads, wiki's and stickys in the sapphire and dream forums. all your answers are there. you should make sure you know what your doing before you start hacking your phone, things can get kinda messy if you don't know the proper procedures.
Im dead serious when i say "dont get one"
TMobile is putting out poor android devices, and they're putting out a lot of them. If you have the $250 credit wait until they realize that their competition is putting out fewer and far superior Android devices. The MyTouch is the G1 with a bit more ROM, if TMO wants to stay in the game they're going to have to come out with more than the MT3G/Cliq/Moment/Behold, these phones are geared toward the junior school girl demographic and these are all devices with inferior hardware. I kick myself everyday when i have to shamefully take this bush-league MyTouch out of my pocket in public. Seriously though, the HTC Magic is a good, capable phone, the HTC MyTouch is a joke with no punchline. Dont make the same mistake I did, TMO is a very large company, they will figure it out sooner or later. Although they did have a two year jump on the Android market and immediately after their competition released there respective first phones they were far ahead of tmobile. Actually, maybe they wont ever get it

I don't regret getting my MyTouch at all, how are you ashamed of taking it out in public? Everybody that's seen my phone likes it a lot. Sure the name might be stupid but overall the phone itself is very nice.
I love my MT3G, and so far IMO its the best android Tmobile has to offer. The cliq is not bad spec-wise, and its still a baby and we have yet to see, if any, its potential. I love the G1 too, it turns heads still but its just too big for me with the fat battery for everday use. As far as dud phones go I've unlocked plenty of high end At&t phones to use on Tmobile with no problem, or you could always switch carriers and when you cancel your service tell them that's why so they know. Hopefully Tmobile or At&t will get the magic by next summer so I can get my hands on one myself.
the main thing is if your unsure about rooting it don't do it, when your unsure of things that leads you too make stupid mistakes which will always lead to a brick
rooting your phone is quite stressful (even when you understand it) because you never know when it might just not turn back on...
my suggestion to you is simple....
your unsure now so the best way to go about it is doing your research until your 110% sure of what you are doing
rooting isn't just going to disappear tomorrow, and that gives you plenty of time to research and understand before you make a bricking mistake
and what does ive kinda done a g1 before mean?
you should really try to be more specific with your questions...
i.e.:
look over the rooting process and ask questions based on the parts you are confused about
tell us exactly what you have done before so people know what areas you would need help (not kinda sorta done type questions)
research research research; 1 mistake = a ugly paperweight
...besides that good luck
^^^^^^^^^^^ what he said, i've been researching this rooting thing for some weeks now and i am only going to get my magic on thursday, so i am now pretty comfortable with the rooting thing and i don't even have the phone. When i get my phone i'm not even going to root it right away, i wanna have some time to really use it in its default state so that when i do root it i'm gonna hav a better apprecitaion for the power that rooting will give to me!!!!

Hah, I did the same thing with my G1, except I was only scared to root it at first, even with all that I knew and then it took me the whole night to actually finish the rooting process itself.

Complication with rooting

Hi, I was wondering what the setbacks with rooting your phone are. Will there be occasional lockup like apple would do to people, who jail broke their phones?
I just did my preorder with BB. I really missed 3g speeds on my touch HD euro version, which I bought last year thought I will be fine without the 3G speeds man was I wrong. It had a one click video call option for every call I would make, but would only work with 3G, was very frustrating to have something and not being able to use it, why couldn’t HTC just leave this feature on, It came with their UI, seems like they took it out just so they could market this new qik web service.
Anyways thanks for the advice

Rooting the phone will not be all that difficult, and should be available within the week of official launch. The problem will be when people want 2.2 on the device before the official OTA.
I'm not sure but I thought there was trouble with rooting the HTC incredible. If that's the case (which I will check later) then I would assume they will have trouble rooting the EVO since they are so similar in build. Also the EVO has several new aspects that hasn't been on any phone out there yet.
At any rate, I think it would take more time (say 2-3 months) before they are able to root the EVO. My hopes are that it's sooner rather then later...

I, optimistically, disagree..heh...I think we may have a bit more developmental support as I'm sure MOST devs are waiting for the EVO and havent an Incredible to work with. Hopefully more hands will make the load lighter than 2 months..

[Q] desire hd vs mt4g differences as far as development...

hey guys im not dev and if it wernt for detailed instructions i wouldnt even be rooted but im just CURIOUS as to what the differences between the mt4g and dhd are other than the rear camera... is there a reason why we cant use things there developing in there thread? kind of how most roms are dream/sapphire for the g1/mt is there a reason this is not the same for these two? arnt they internally identical or extremely close? same processor/amount of mem etc. again just wondering so please dont flame me but is it just that theres not as much dev interest in the mytouch yetas its newer or does it have something to do with the source no being released yet? is the source for the desire dropped yet?
reason i ask is im trying to make a decision between g2 and mytouch and the frenzy of dev threads for the g2 make me want a g2 but i like the size feel and higher specs of the mt4g and its driving me crazy lol
Not trying to hijack the thread, but get a G2 in hand that has been used more than a day or two and see how flimsy that hinge is and you'll decide against it PDQ.
thanks for the advice! not a hijack at all my main reason for this q is to help me choose between g2/mt.
but yeah i agree the hinge on my g1 is SOLID and i was hoping for the same with the g2 or else id of had one a month ago... but sadly i agree with you. it seems so week and im worried after months or a year or two, it might get worse and id be scared to drop it as the damn screen might pop off lol. but i do wish there was a little more dev support on the mytouch. altho i do know its newer and alot of devs jumped on the g2 and hopefully the mytouch will get there too but i just dont want to see threads like NEW G2 ROM mythouch port comming next month... haha and i figured that the standard sense on the dhd would have been on the mytouch the day it was rooted like the desire z and the g2. but i dont even see alot of interest on it... really i hate expresso it looks horrible to me so thats why its such a big deal id rather stock or normal htc sense at the least. the wait for the ota to perm root issue worrys me to tho.

Is this anyone else's first Android?

It's mine. It's also my first smartphone. Ever since I got my iPod touch, I knew I wanted to switch to Android when I got a phone, as iOS seemed so limited. I was just waiting for the right time. I love this phone.

This my fist Android and Smart Phone too. Too much fun! Way better than my wife's old iPhone 3GS.
yes this is also my first android phone and I absolutely love it, my last phone was the Sidekick 08 so a huge upgrade lol
This is my first android device. Had iphones prior to this and am definitely enjoying this more.

This is my first Android and smartphone! I love this phone Although I would have gotten the HD7 if I didn't pick the MT4G.
My first android phone but before this I had a blackberry 8900 and before that a tmobile dash. I love this phone

First android here as well...but ive had blackberries and a ton of other phones previous...couldnt be happier with this phone though...so many options
put me on the list too. been an iphone fanboy for the past 2 years, and i couldn't have picked a better phone to start my foray into Android.
revived my XDA account (last logged on years back when i was on a Win Mobile phone), spent a few nights of reading and i'm back to tinkering with my MT4G with mods and rom flashes.
woohoo!!
Me too, this is my first Android smart phone coming from IPhone, IPhone 3G, IPhone 3GS, and IPhone 4

I've had an iphone for 4 years. Finally switched to android and LOVE it. Can't believe i've waited so long.
Ahh the joy of a first android phone coming from the iPhone lol enjoy guys im on my prolly 10th different android phone or something ive had em all from t-mobile since the G1 =]
This is my first "good" android phone, my previous phone was the cliq xt and from my experiences with that phone I wouldn't count it as my first android phone.

It's my first native android phone, but I did have the HD2 with one of the android ports...
Android virgin here as well......loving every minute of it though. Funny thing, a month ago I was more loyal to my blackberry 9700 than anything you could think of, now its on my dresser being a paperweight
@CHILLED 26 I'm in that boat also. XD

Just wanted to ask, since youre a newbie and you're running CM7, do you think its ok running CM7 for other newbies?
I'm already perm rooted, plus I've followed, read & watch couple youtube vids on CM roms so I pretty much know about em. My only deal is, will i lose the function of running all those 3rd party apps in market, or lose stability, or even experience battery, signal or gps issues?? Cuz if not then i'll def put CM7 rc1 on

Hmm... Well, I'm the type to hack everything I own. Like literally. I'm also 17 and have alot of time on my hands. And I happen to be employed as a tech support guy lol. I really enjoy tinkering with things. Thats why I enjoy the nightlies/CM7 in general so much. Plus I can show it off haha.
As for loss in functionality, there aren't as many as you would think. Most apps are compatible and the few that aren't are constantly being updated, due to the Nexus S being more common and such. I haven't noticed any loss in compatibility in the apps I use, but that's kinda subjective. My battery has actually improved with the kernels I use and my signal hasn't changed from stock. So I definitely suggest it. As long as you can follow instructions and keep a level head if you run into problems, go for it.
First Android Phone
This is my first personal android phone. Switched from an iPhone 3GS. Best decision I've ever made.
Working with a rooted MT4G with Cyanogenmod 7.

I'm in the same boat. I've owned Cliqs, CliqXTs, Dreams, Magics and some other ones down the line...
Must say i love this phone, heck i love the android platform. I've owned Countless Blackberries. a few WinMo phones and several Androids.... Android style of OS is the way of the future in my book. Heck one of co-workers (who own a iP4) said androids are more computer than they are phone.....
HD2 vs mt4g?
I heard they are fastest if you load android on it.

android ui difficult

I have a Co worker that has a incredible 2 and had a incredible before that so he is no newb to android. And he constantly has issues doing things like turning GPS off and other random things. I told him use a widget he told me ooo didn't know they had that lol...Mind you he has had his android longer then me...Its very weird I don't think sense is hard to learn at all... I'm thinking of telling him to get a iPhone next cuz its idiot proof lol

An iphone or a razr v3. I have some friends that are tech-challenged but they still like android and know how to download apps and somewhat use them, even if its not to their full potential. Its talking about root, kernals, and ROMs that I loose them.
I know alot of people that find it difficult to figure out, or just annoying. Finding calk's remove sense was one of the happier days of my android life.
