[Q] Rooted MT4G Constantly Freezing... - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My rooted MT4G started constantly locking up for no apparent reason a few days ago (although I have noticed it occurs a lot when downloading). Everything is fine, then the screen locks up, no buttons are responsive, and it never goes to sleep. Battery pull everytime.
It has happened with the Desire HD ROM, CyanogenMod 6.1, ICE Glacier... I have done wipes, re-installs, permission fixes and it keeps happening.
Not sure what to do... I am out of remorse period and didn't get the insurance. I hope my phone isn't totally borked.
Gonna do a complete restore and see what happens, but if that doesn't work is there something that I am missing? If this phone takes a dump on me, I am pretty much screwed... should have got the damn insurance.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Have you found the cause? Is there a fix?

I can say that rooting your phone via the steps outlined in this post, won't on their own, 'cause the phone to freeze up.
I'm running the stock ROM and the ONLY non-standard issue thing I've done to any of the 6 MT4G's in my possession, is root them via the post above. So I feel pretty confident that rooting your phone isn't the cause of the issue.
The different ROMs though, the processes in installing them etc. I cannot vouch for. Maybe someone else will be able to verify your steps, but I wanted to post my two cents and clarify root vs. everything else.

I've rooted 3 different times and none of them have caused lockups. My phone works fine.
But I can only speak for myself.

[SOLVED] Nexus One freezes and reboots.

Hey all.
I've got a Nexus one last week. I seem to have a problem with the phone. My phone freezes and crashes a few times a day. Most of the times it happens when i run a game. One time it happened when browsing with the default browser. Another time it happened when someone was calling me. It just freezes and reboots by itself. I uninstalled all my apps and made a factory reset. The first time it happened i was browsing the internet on the first day i got it. No extra apps installed. I did 2 factory resets after that and no change. I'm in Europe...i hope i don't have to send it back for repairs all the way to the US. Oh, yeah, it was bought from the US.
What do you think its the problem?
Thanks.
EDIT: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6497531&postcount=10
Is it rooted?
No, just stock!
the problem with these smart phones is that they try to juggle knives while running from flaming ninjas before mastering the basics of coordination. But that's open source nature, we get the goodies first and fix the bugs later
This is not an ordinary bug. This makes the phone quite unusable.
My phone used to randomly reboot (about once a week). Rarely since rooting though.
I suggest running "adb logcat" in a command shell while its connected via usb. (make sure the drivers are installed and usb-debug is enabled)
This way you will see exactly what caused the reboot if it happens when youre logging.
My used to do the same when running stock ROM (freezing/rebooting). Haven't had any problem ever since rooting it (I am on BakedGoods 1.1).
That's another, not oft mentioned, benefit of rooting - with some ROMs you _are_ getting a _more stable system.
Never experienced instability/reboots/freezes even when mine was stock. Huh.
It happened to me once, but that about 2 weeks ago. Haven't experienced any freezing since then.
I know this is an old thread but just to update you guys, its been 2 months since i have the device and the random reboots have stopped after making like 10 factory resets. It still crashes like once a week or so when its in the browser. I suspect there's some nasty java script code that's braking the browser and it reboots. But its so rare now that its not annoying me anymore. The average up time now its about 200 hours.
So i'm a happy men now
Thank god! I've been worrying about this non stop since I first read it.

Sprint hero restarting after 2.1

I have installed several of the 2.1 roms out there. Each one that i install causes my phone to randomly restart. Is this a common issue with anyone else? As soon as I go back to 1.5, the restarting stops.
I am having the same issue on the stock 2.1. The only answer I have gotten from HTC is hard reset. But I have already done this twice. So I am going to root my phone and hopefully get rid of this problem. It only started after I updated to 2.1.

Silly question perhaps, but are you completely wiping data and dalvik cache before flashing any of these 2.1 ROMs? Sometimes this happens if you don't do a full wipe before installing new ROMs.
I'm having the same issue, and I did a full wipe, installed several different roms and finally settled on aloysius
i've had the same problems with every 2.1 rom with the exception of darchdroid.
for me it usually happened after i placed a phone call and tried to hang up
and yes everything was wiped before flashing....
im having the same issue i knew i wasnt the only one, has anyone figured out why this is???
I am getting that error trying to install ZenEXP.
Same issue here, only mine's been doing it out of the box, as I got mine the day the EVO was released. I've rooted it and attempted to install several ROMs hoping to get rid of the issue, but had no luck so far. Never had the luxury of having 1.5, as mine came with 2.1, so I just thought it was the phone, honestly. Interesting to know the issue doesn't occur with 1.5...
Anybody got a copy of the stock 1.5 from original release? I'd like to give it a shot.
I do not have any issues that have been listed here. I am running fresh rom and everything is working great.Just wanted to make sure all views arebeing represented in this thread
hmmm....had a thought, did the phone get really hot when it happened....cause that is what happened when i was on fresh....

You won't be able to go back to the stock 1.5 original. That has been tried already by a bunch of developers here and it didn't work. You would probably be able to flash a 1.5 ROM (browse way back into the Development pages forum here), but since you had stock 2.1, there's no way for you to go back to stock 1.5.
For all the rest of you, not sure why you are getting random reboots, but as mentioned in the previous post, sometimes the Heros do that when they get overheated or overworked. It would be best to root and start with a very stable, non-overclocked ROM. A couple of the most stable and reliable stock-based ROMs here in this section are DamageControl 2.09.1 and nfinitefx45's Stock 2.27.651.6. I recommend you try either of those out if you haven't already -- hopefully that will fix/solve some of your troubles.
Please report back if any if you have success or more problems with these...we want to make sure you get the help you need
overheating is defiantly not whats causing my restarting. im not trying to thread hijack so ill provide a link to the thread i started about this same issue. in my thread i have attached bug reports (i think thats what they are) and now i have stopped receiving help just when i provided the info needed to see whats casuing this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=684727
Im not any good at code so i cant read the big reports well. but i believe its a hardware issue because there is a small presentage of people having these errors and i cant seam to get anyone to be able to reproduce this if it doesnt happen to them.

Sorry, I don't understand much of the code myself. And I think a handful of our devs here who understand all that coding have already moved on to the EVO. I read your other thread too but don't know what else to suggest. Wish I could help more. You could just be one of the unlucky few who got a bad, buggy phone right out of the box.
Have you thought about just calling Sprint customer service and asking for a replacement phone? Certainly with all the trouble you're having it may be worth it. I think even if you don't have the insurance plan, a replacement phone is only around $35.
@chromiumleaf, yeah sadly i think its time for a different phone.

phone won't go past 50%

hey guys.
i have a tmobile hd2 and i've noticed that my phone wont go past 50% with memory usage without having to restart itself. its very annoying. it happens after ive been using the phone for a while or been using the wi-fi router. my touch pro 2 never did that to me though so im wondering whats wrong.
help?
thanks
sorry to bump this but can no one help me?
Is it getting hot? Mine gets warm after using WIFI router. Once, only once, and I have no idea why because it hasn't done it since then, it randomly rebooted. I understand that higher temps can cause issues with the HD2. I'd do a search but I'm too frazzeled after a long day of work.
it cant be the heat...my phone gets warm but not hot once in a while. when it resets itself, it doesnt have to be hot to do it.
and when it does reset itself, it forgets to start the gps so i have to reset it again
i hate when it does it...is that normal to not go past 50% ram usage? does anyone elses do that? im gonna call and get a replacement but does anyone elses HD2 not go past it?

You don't have your ROM in your sig, so I don't know if you have a custom or not.
For sure, you phone crashing that fast is a shame and not normal.
If you are running a custom ROM, try getting on that thread to see if someone has or had the same issue. Sometimes these things happen and fixes are pretty fast if the chef wants to keep an audience.
If you are running stock, you might consider giving a custom ROM a shot, especially some of the "Lite" versions out there.
Be sure to Task 29 between any flashing to wipe out all previous data. Spare bits hanging around can interfere with a new ROM in unpredictable ways, including developing a crash pattern specific to your device that doesn't happen to other users of the same ROM.
Please keep us informed of your progress, someday another might have the issue and be looking for your solution, even if that is a hardware warranty exchange
hmm, i can see the rom version and everything on my sig... =/
im running the stock rom.
i wanted to go to a custom rom but then i hate having to update the rom every time a new one comes out. you know? props to the chefs who do that though!
i just had it exchanged. it was too annoying to keep going on like that

[Q] Nexus One Random Reboot Crash (logcat)

Hey all.
Been having problems with a Nexus One that crashes at seemingly random times.
I have been unable to pin it on anything, and am asking your help.
It appears to be independent of the Rom installed, whether there is an SD card present, or whether its connected to a USB cable or phone charger.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Phone Info:
Nexus One (AT&T model)
Radio: 4.06.00.12_7
Current Rom: Enomther's TheOfficial Nexus1 - v2.12.2
Provider: Rogers (BC, Canada)
Logcat output attached as screen capture image.
This has been reported by a few users. I sent mine in for repair and got it back not repaired - they couldn't replicate the problem.
My case has been escalated which means a HTC guy called and asked me a few questions and then told me to wait for an email (a few days ago).
I believe my problem started when I seriously overheated it ... driving with navigation on, 3g downloading maps and traffic data, car charger plugged in all on a very hot day on a very hot dashboard. This was the first reboot and they got more and more often after that. Now I can't run anything for more than 5 minutes if 3G or wireless is on (in 'Airplane' mode I can run for quite a while without a reboot).
mine was doing the same thing.
getting progressively worse until the phone was basically unusable earlier this week.
I was running CM6 at first when it started happening.
installed the newest nightly and it worked better for a bit then got even worse.
uninstalled the stand alone version of gmail from the market and it worked for a couple hours and then kept rebooting on me.
finally i did a factory data/cache wipe and installed a rooted stock rom and things have been working PERFECT for over half a week.
I had the same issue. first reboot happen when i had nav running plunged in then after a few months utube , browser etc would restart my phone. it didn't matter which rom i used or stock. I sent it in and they fixed it. i had issues with htc but it got fixed.
Yup, same here, strange thing is it isn't a complete reboot. Hard to explain but what happens is i'll touch the phone and then it will immediatly go to the CM6 boot logo, then immediatly to the lock screen, (which I have disabled) then to my normal desktop. Total time elapsed maybe 5/6 seconds, wierd.
A normal reboot usually takes about say a minute or so. just started happening 3/4 days ago, and happens maybe twice a day at most, some days not at all. Probably wait until Cyanogen includes 2.2.1 into 6.0.0 stable then reflash.
Ive been having the same problem for about a week now, but I'm still using stock, not rooted. Its weird, because its a really fast reboot. It goes to the Booting X, for about 6 seconds, then it boot up just fine. I cant understand it.
this really sucks
I am keeping my ATT nexus one around for gingerbread but these random reboots are really killing me....I use the phone for five minutes and it just reboots by itself....The phone runs really well for those five minutes...Ive done five factory resets but it is still just doing these phantom reboots.... Anybody find out anything more about this...or know a fix....the phone is not rooted and it is clean stock froyo...so please help or keep talking about it so htc will address this issue lol which i doubt since this phone is starting to become ancient....(cant wait till nexus S) =P
With regards to the original problem posted, I believe I've managed to diagnose it correctly.
The problem lies with faulty heat distribution. The phone would crash and reboot more often in times of great stress:
charging the phone (heats up the battery)
running many applications at once (heavy system load)
navigation (heavy dataand gps traffic, image processing)
This coupled with the fact that changing the OS did nothing to remedy the problem solidified the notion that the problem was hardware based.
Given this, I contacted HTC Nexus One support and had the phone repaired.
Note: HTC will honor the warranty and fix hardware issues for an unlocked Nexus One. With software issues, you're on your own (for obvious reasons).
This is exactly what my phone is off to warranty for. I experienced this with every rom tried. I wipe my phone completely and put stock froyo on only to see the exact same behaviour...so at least I'm not crazy
The tech told me it was a hardware problem so that is a bit of a mind ease.
It seems Nexus One and Desire are really similar: HTC Desire rebooting on its own.
P.S. It's a problem with faulty motherboard, if you're within warranty, it should be replaced.
I also have been pleasantly experiencing this issue with the nexus one, so i sent it for repair at HTC and they have said it is an issue with the motherboard and it has been replaced, it is now in the post so I will update this post when I receive it to whether the problem is resolved. Hope so was driving me crazy!
The log did not capture the error. In most cases its a software issue, not hardware. (has happened to me too, not recently though)
Well an update as promised.
I received my N1 back after UPS had finished not dispatching it due to "Adverse weather conditions" and the issue is GONE!!! I know a week isn't really a long time to trial the device but this was happening several times a day.
HTC replaced the motherboard.
My advice to anyone having this problem, is to send it to HTC for repair (dont be worried about it being rooted/custom ROM etc mine was and because its a known hardware issue they really aren't bothered about it.)
It took two trips to HTC for them to finally address the issue. They did fix something (they didn't say what) and the problem is gone.
I believe it was the motherboard because Swype Beta decided that it was a new phone and not the one I registered (so it would not install).

HTC Aria touch screen being very unresponsive

So today while in class at college, my phone was acting very funky. I noticed that touch screen response was going crazy (Even the capacitive buttons were freaking out). Pushing on the screen would type randomly, bring the notification bar down, etc. Pushing on the capacitive buttons would usually do nothing, vibrate, or do the exact opposite it is suppose to do. I can usually alleviate the issue by turning the screen off and turning it back on, but it will only be responsive for a very short time.
So, I was thinking there was something wrong with my install of the CM 6.1.1 ROM, so I flashed the Liberated Aria FR008 ROM and... it does the same. So then I load the CM 7 (18 nightly) and it seems fine with it happening every now and then, but I don't want to use CM7 (Albeit great, it's sluggish and isn't up to what I want to use as my daily driver).
I've treated my Aria with care ever since I got it after my transfer from Alltel. I'm usually able to fix my own problems, but this one has me stumped. Any ideas as to why it's freaking out?
CM7 is now up to nightly 39 and there was a big improvement in speed/performance from 34 and later.
I have 34 loaded right now (Just found it in my Dropbox folder); however, the touch screen is still very sensitive.
I've been having very similar problems with my Aria recently; unresponsive, misreads where my finger is, Swype goes nuts, but a quick lock/unlock will correct it for a little while. I thought it was just that my cracked screen was finally giving up. Now I'm downloading CM7 build 39 to see if it's something else.
EDIT: The CM7 build didn't help my problem. I'm upgrading to an Inpsire 4G tomorrow, but I might try a few more things first or while I'm rooting it.
So I found my backup of the stock ROM and flashed it back on there. Still getting the same issue.
I upgraded the stock ROM to the "latest" AT&T version and I'm taking it into AT&T tomorrow.
perhaps its an isolated defect on your phone. hopefully your hardware is still under warranty, but alas we already flashed. maybe you can get a technician to look at it.
Took it into the store and the guy said it's "shot". I'll be able to replace it under warranty.
I should be fine. I'm still confused about how the touch screen became unresponsive, and like I said... I'm usually able to figure this stuff out (Going to college for computer engineering).
