Updates? Firmware? WIFI turns off - Galaxy Tab General

Sprint Tab,
when i go into settings and go to check for firmware updates.
It automatically turns off WIFI, and trys to check through Sprint CDMA?
I dont have sprint service, I just use it as a WiFi only tab.
Anyway else to check for firmware updates and etc?

How to check for firmware update so i can try it and tell you if mine works
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App

just go into settings, and on the LAST selection, like "about galaxy tab" or something, there another selection "check updates" and click on any of them. It shuts off my WiFi.

This applies to me, too.

Me also. Is there a way to update the firmware when only having WiFi access, and no contract?
They shouldn't sell this thing to people for $600 without a contract if it can't be updated as needed.

If your device doesn't show you the OTA update

It seems that dhd finds the upgrade only under 3g network.
To update your phone:
turn off wifi
turn on 3g network
go to settings > about phone > software updates > check now
it will find the update
press home
switch 3g off
switch wifi on
and, using the notification menu, start the update
It worked on my dhd

NOT correct; mine was found perfectly on my WiFi-network!
Nope. Didn't work for me on unbranded dhd in UK (vodafone).

I don't think the OP was suggesting his technique will make the OTA available to UK users.... It seems the OTA simply is not yet ready for us yet. Might be another few days according to another post I read....

According to that, HTC UK are still screwing around with 2.3 so we'll be getting it a bit late.

How to disable "Wi-Fi only" to be able to update through 3G?

I have been trying to check for updates over 3G but I always get this message "Wi-Fi is not available. Disable Wi-Fi only. Using 3G network may incur additional charges". How do I change that? Thanks in advance!
well the obvious answer to the question of how to turn off wifi is to go to settings-wireless-then turn off Wifi
not sure if that was what you meant though

Wi-Fi is turned off already but I can't check for updates through 3G as I get the aforementioned message, so I don't actually get it neither!

Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings?

Is hotspot/tethering option missing on all us carrier in the settings I'm using sprint version & it's not here at all...this phone is useless 2 me if I can't find a way to fix this.

Hey man did this work? I haven't gotten my S8 in the mail yet so I can't test it...
Mobile Hotspot and Tethering is available on the T-Mobile version by default, both in the settings menu and in quick launch
I have the verizon model and the hotspot option is available and working. Was not hidden.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, since AT&T had it removed from the quick settings on my S6.
Tethering Switch
by the way, if you want a really good "Hotspot Widget" that ACTUALLY works...and I literally tried probably 90% on the Play store and ONE did finally work...
Tethering Switch
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=jp.gr.java_conf.taketake.tethering&hl=en
DID work. It doesn't bring you to the HotSpot Settings first, and then you would have to turn on the HotSpot manually...this does it quickly, shows that it is enabled.

I tried this but didn't work for me with AT&T. I have a Tethering shorcut, but it takes you to the hotspot settings to turn it on manually like you mentioned. So I was excited to try this app out, however after I installed it, it just says it's Enabled (but it's not) and then when I tap it again it says Enabled again, not Disabled. Unless I go into my settings and turn it on, then the app will say Disabled (but doesn't really). So I guess I'll stick with what I have for now.
Hey I ended up returning my S8. I apologise for putting this info out about the Tethering app. It works perfectly on all my other ROMS. It is the only "widget" type app that worked on my LG G5 on stock rooted FW on MM. Anyway, I am not sure if you guys got Tethering to work on Verizon or whatever, but I had no issues with it on T-Mobile... However this app didn't work on T-Mobile on my S8 even.
Buy from Samsung?

You didn't by any chance purchase the phone directly from Samsung did you? I had the exact same problem with an S8 purchased directly from Samsung (got the free Gear VR promo) and I have Sprint.
There was no hotspot option anywhere in the setup menus. And of course, I did not notice this until 2 weeks later when I was on a trip. The hotel WiFi was messed up and I needed to use hotspot. It's not that it did not work, there was no option at all in Setup for Hotspot and Tethering.
I talked to Sprint, took it to a Sprint store for help, and talked to Samsung tech support. Nothing they all tried fixed it. Both Sprint and Samsung suggested the phone might be defective and I should pursue getting a replacement. That didn't make sense to me because WiFi and Cell Data were working fine, and hotspot is just software.
My fix was to do a full Factory Reset and then set it all up again. Tedious, but when it came back up, the Hotspot and Tethering option were there and it works perfectly now.
Recent update messed it up again?
Tried the adb method of Get/Push revealing Hotspot via Quick Tiles. Didn't work.
Any other ideas for regaining hotspot on the device? Without rooting?
Current date: Jan 7 2018.
i have same problem too, waiting for update
I tried that https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/ but I cant even try itcoz I get "because an app etc about some permission", I tried to disable so many cant figure it out
So how does one Quick Toggle Tether? I use it all the time in my car

Verizon S8 with tmobile SIM - Cannot run system update

Neither on wifi nor cellular will it check for update. I get the error "sorry, we are having trouble authenticating your device"

wondering the same :/ anyone have anything?
see my post here. besides flashing the t-mobile ummm rom I guess over it, you won't be able to update. I've tried samsung and t-mobile and the only thing that will work besides that is to borrow a sim from a friend and use that... https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/help/best-buy-screw-t3594359/page2

Thats not the case. I am using vzw GS8 on att and I receive updates fine
Well I'm confused then. I was able to do the last update with a t-mobile Sim in the phone? Right now when I try checking for updates it errors out saying it couldn't be authenticated. Anyone have any clue?
Hope I can help you!

you wont be able to updated through wifi or LTE unless you use a verizon SIM but you can do it easily using your computer and samsung smart switch.

Try to get at least an inactivated Verizon sim card from any Verizon store or you can also try a normal working Verizon sim. I had AT&T Galaxy S5 and it needed the carrier's sim card to even check for update. I took the sim, put it in, checked for update and was able to install it.
Fix to your issue
Hey guys so I do also share the same situation, I have a Verizon s8+ yet I have T-Mobile One as my coverage
Because it's not authenticated as a Verizon provided account it simply won't update
Now.. the solution to updating isn't directly on your device.
It's within the Samsung Smart switch App for either Mac or windows, you can run an update through there with little to no problems at all and finally keep your device up to date without having to return it for an unlocked one.
Just a brief note regarding the smart switch App, keep in mind that sometimes the update will freeze at a certain percentage on the computer so just be sure to close the app out only if your Samsung device hasn't received the green upload screen yet.
Hopefully this helps out alot of you guys ?
Best regards

I'd like to flash mine to t mobile, I'm begging you to help me with this!!!
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I've seen a bunch of info on the forums on how to flash the T-Mo ROM on an s8 - as well as flashing the Samsung Unlocked ROM on the s8 but frankly, almost all the threads are from back at the phone launch - and it is unclear to me which roms & programs to search for.
In a similar vein - I'm a noob to the whole process using oden - which I think is what i would need to use. I have experience from years ago running cyanogen mods on a nook tablet and messing with windows phones - but nothing recent and things have changed a lot.
I've read conflicting reports throughout the forums on doing this...
I'm running a VZW Branded (but it's now "unlocked")
Model: s8 SM-G-950U
Build #: NRD90M.G950USQS2BQL1
Baseband #: G950USQS2BQL1
What I'm looking for (really the right word is "NEED"):
Access to lower 700 A block (full band 12 use)
Ability to get OTA Updates
Mobile Hotspot Functionality
WiFi Calling
VoLTE
Bixby
If I could have these all running the Samsung Unlocked ROM - then that would be preferred...
If not - I would want to flash the T-Mobile ROM.
I need to know ASAP as I only have 14days from today (2/14/18) to figure this out or go back to VZW
Many thanks!

Does unlocked essential phone work with Sprint Wi-Fi calling

There is a Wi-Fi calling check box, but nothing seems to happen if I check it, and it doesn't seem like the essential APKs are there to make it work. Does anyone know if there is a way to make it work?
Also, is there a surefire way to test if it is working -- ex. should true WiFi calling work in airplane mode with WiFi turned on?
If it's unsupported on the unlocked device, is it known if it's possible to flash the Sprint rom to enable the feature?
It works perfectly well on my unlocked device in the UK. It does depend on your carrier, though, as to the support they provide and their requirements.
I have an unlocked PH1 on Sprint right now. Wifi calling works perfectly. If you are using a custom ROM, you will typically need to modify build.prop to add in support, but it does work. You may need to flash back to complete stock to go through the Sprint setup. This is done to update PRL and other odd files Sprint uses. Can't update those on a custom ROM. You can confirm if it is working or not by looking for the highlighted icon.

When I first put my Essential on Sprint, I could not activate Wifi calling, Went in to "About Phone", "OMADM updates" and updated PRL and Profile, that was no help.
I called support twice, and couldn't get it to work. It wouldn't let me turn on wifi calling.
I went back to it 2 weeks later, and it is now working perfectly. I work in pretty much a basement with no Sprint signal, but get Wifi calls just fine now.

That's very helpful. So you didn't complete any sort of Sprint related setup with the Sprint logo on it, right?
