DJ Steve Build.prop and Market (Google) Apps - Streak 5 General

Hi Steve (and everyone),
I had a question about the fingerprint of the Streakdroid Froyo we all know and love.
Is the phone essentially advertising itself as a Nexus One for the purposes of the market?
Here's my issue:
Lately, I am getting watered down versions of the new Google first party app offerings.
First it was the new "personalized search" in the new version of voice search. I simply don't get that option.
I know that's not a huge deal for everyone since many on this forum are not in the States, and that feature only supports US English for the moment anyway.
But now, on the new version of maps, the two-finger twist to rotate does not work, and nor does the whole 3D landmarks feature.
On the official blog post announcing the new version of maps, there are a number of Nexus One users reporting the same behavior.
Anyway, I'm just wondering:
Is this something that is determined by the fingerprint in the build.prop?
If so, anyone know which line(s) make up everything the market looks at?
If we are using Nexus One settings, is it possible that we're starting to be left behind by them as Google pulls back what they support on the Nexus One?
Lastly, and most importantly, do you think we can change it? Maybe we can grab the relevant lines from a build.prop from the Galaxy S?
Just an idea there. I'm willing to do the experimenting if I can get a little information to get it rolling.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

3D buildings work on Steve's 1.4.6. Try zooming in New York. Two-finger rotation does not work.

Not working for me on 1.5.1.
I dunno. I think this is something we need to address. I am gonna research more but if anyone has any thoughts please let me know.

Works here on 1.5.1 but its slow and only works at a certain zoom level

If you open up the build.prop you can tell that there is no reference to any other device, just the streak...
Code:
ro.product.model=Dell Streak
ro.product.brand=dell
ro.product.name=streak
ro.product.device=streak
ro.product.manufacturer=Dell Inc.
*do not change "dell" to "Dell" (capital d) it will kill the stock swype, saying something along the lines that its not authorized for your device.
I have noticed that some apps by google were not showing up in earlier (1.1 i think) builds but they are now in 1.5.1
I have no issues with the 3D feature on google maps. See google's post here and make sure your trying to do something that is supported...
Also for US users, you might want to edit the following in the build.prop
Code:
ro.product.locale.region=GB
to
Code:
ro.product.locale.region=US
Before i did this, if i wanted to share a location with Google Maps it would send the link as google.co.uk instead of google.com
It still pointed to the same thing but people would call me asking if i'm sure i sent the proper link...
---UPDATE---
Was just testing some changes in the build.prop and i noticed this
Code:
ro.build.product=passion
and passion is HTC's code name for the Nexus One
but right before it, it says
Code:
# ro.build.product is obsolete; use ro.product.device

Yeah but there is more reference to Passion. Look at the "fingerprint" entry. I think that is relevant too.
I dunno, I am pretty confident something is up with this. What about personalized voice search? You getting that ok too?
For me, the only new feature that work in the new maps is pulling down to the different perspective and I do have the option to cache GPS.
Pretty sure I am not just expecting something that is not there as my wife has a Samsung Captivate and I have compared the two. Twist to rotate works on her phone.
I also read the whole blog entry. Pretty confident I know what the new features are supposed to be.
Hmmmm

Porting the phone and dialer apk from Galaxy S I9000

On the nexus forum, there is a thread about porting the phone, dialer, and notification bar from the original galaxy s build.
The screen shots and discussion can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=717914
I found another link http://forum.samdroid.net/f10/galaxy-s-apks-1387/ which has a download link to download all the apk's from the I9000 build
Since those apk's are coming from another galaxy do they have to be de-odexed? or can I just use adb to copy the phone and dialer apk onto my vibrant?
wow n1 users are jocking galaxy s. they should just converto galaxy s. they should know by now galaxy s is the superior of all andriod at this moment.
Swiping left or right to call and send sms from contacts is also kick ass
i like my Vibrants version better
I love the phone app from the vibrant i am giving up adressbook for it if i could i would install it on my g1 that went to a family member when i got my vibrant

Probably have to be de-odexed. But why would you want to go through the trouble porting that? Its almost identical to the vibrant except for a couple small things.

GPSSamsungRestore: Official GPS fix?

Samsung USA has tweeted the Market availability of GPSSamsungRestore, a GPS optimization app. Tweets have indicated that it is for the Vibrant and Captivate:
http://twitter.com/samsungtweets
maybe , some one using AT&T can help and upload the apk maybe ?
Hmmmm... I assume that it is only on the market in the USA because I searched for it under the names GPSSamsungRestore, GPS Samsung Restore, GPS Restore, etc. and I cannot find it on the market here in Canada.
I am assuming that us poor Canadians will not see this app anytime soon but I have posted a question on the Samsung Mobile Canada facebook page and I will see if they answer it. I doubt it though cause they NEVER answer ANYTHING!!!
Sure would be nice if this is the "fix" weve been waiting for...

Right so I think what this app is for is to reset the gps so it works and then as time passes and it gets bad again you run the app again to start from scratch so it works again... Lather, rinse, repeat...
Im just guessing here and its not the greatest solution but if thats how it works it would be better than nothing...

Exactly. Samsung have probably been receiving complaints by many people who are gps "experts", so they wanted to provide support with an easy approach for dealing with them.
I wouldn't expect new drivers are anything like that, I'd simply expect it to reset the GPS setting file.

Is Samsung was receiving complaints from GPS "experts" then dont you think that these "experts" would have already stated "definitively" that the GPS cannot be fixed?
And if Samsung had been dealing with GPS "experts" then why would they release a software that would IMMEDIATELY be squashed by these same GPS "experts"?
I would like to think that Samsung may be finally listening to us all complaining and that this could even be just step 1 in the right direction to a useable GPS on this device. Wishful thinking I know but I sure hope so...

AOSP Alpha for Fascinate

So, I see Twitter is all buzzing about the developers putting AOSP on the Fascinate and I was hoping to see some discussion about it here but surprisingly....nothing.
Actually I have to admit, I was hoping to lurk around to learn some more about what this means for us. As a new Android owner, I believe this gives us the stock android experience that devices like the N1 and NS have but I'm not entirely sure.
So I'm just coming out and asking, is this the reason why so many people are excited? To get rid of Samsung's TW layer on top of Android or does this mean something more? Secondly, does this offer us a pathway to Froyo or Gingerbread or are we still dependent on Samsung releasing their version first?
Aosp is android open source project. Yes it is vanilla android. The reason there is no discussion on here about it is that it is not totally functional yet, from last I heard, 2 days ago. If you want to see the progress of this, you can go into irc and ask about it. Aosp is usually more streamlined because there is no custom skin over it, sense, tw, blur which usually slow the phone down. It offers more customization, you can look at other aosp roms on different phones to see what kind of customization it offers. And lastly, no it does not pave the way for froyo or gingerbread. The source has to be released from Google which it has been, (I think) but samsungs source is corrupted which really hinders our devs from really doing much and makes it much more difficult. The RIL, the thing that allows us to call, text, ect also is also a problem. I hope this clarifies some things for you and I am still learning things everyday and if I have anything wrong, please feel free to correct me.

The alpha build was just "released" here today or last night. It's still buggy, but functional enough for basic use. It will make it somewhat easier to get AOSP Froyo/Gingerbread working, but it will still be difficult to get either on our phones without Samsung releasing either of them first to lay the initial groundwork for them.
Jt has made his own RIL for the aosp build, so I think this does help with froyo a bit.

Thanks guys. I had read the he was making his own RIL, which seemed like you would only do if you wanted to make yourself independent from Samsung in the future.
This is my first Android and I REALLY like it compared to my previous smartphone, the BB Storm 1. However, like the Storm, Samsung's inability to produce a timely Froyo build feels like Deja Vu all over again.
I've played with TW, Sense and Stock Android and maybe it's just me but honestly, they are all pretty similar. I know that some here will vehemently disagree but all of them just let me do what I need to do, run apps, write e-mails and make calls. Truthfully, it seems absurd for these manufacturers to even write these silly custom UI's at all but they seem to think that this provides some sort of value added differentiation.
The only 2 things that bother me about my phone, the occasional freezes where the hardware buttons are lit but don't respond and then all of a sudden all the touches that I made that didn't do anything at first, start to fire off rapidly. Secondly, not being able to upgrade to apps that are coming out that require Froyo.
Full disclosure, I would have said GPS performance but that was fixed here with DJ05 and JT's 12/12 Non-Voodoo Kernel.
Well, I think the only thing that scared me away from running the AOSP rom was the list of bugs that seemed to indicate that inbound phone calls don't always work and lack of BT. While I know I can try it out and return, I hate having to restore all those apps and data settings with Titanium, not to mention the potential for a late night in IRC in case things go south!!
I was really excited to see this and loaded it up as soon as I could. It looked great, I would have kept it on regardless of the bugs, but for some reason my home button stopped working and sms functionality was sporadic at best.
I can't wait to try it again when it is finished.
Gotta say, major props to JT, birdman and others. Only reason for me wanting froyo now that i have DJ05 is HID support, which most likely won't come until CM comes around, so i'll wait on installing this, especially since they don't need bug report yet. But its nice to see progress on the playing field, especially when its progress that the community has taken into their own hands.
Thanks for all the hard work.

Glad you posted this thread. It clears up some questions I had too. I've been in computing since 1980 and it seems like the more time passes, the more unfriendly people are about sharing tech knowledge. Android has been one of the most difficult pieces of tech for me to find solid CONCRETE answers about. You have to piece things together from hundreds of websites and hope the consensus is accurate and not a stream of cut and paste work. Especially with android purporting to be open, you'd think there'd be a lot more energy to encourage more folks to develop for it, but it almost seems exactly the opposite.

Does anyone else get an instant FC on the Facebook for Android app? I was looking forward to using the app's built-in and far-superior to TouchWiz Facebook contact sync. Thing is, it just won't open after a fresh install. The only way I can get the app to open is if I restore a TB backup of Facebook taken from DJ05... which automatically keeps the built-in contact sync disabled.
bwheelies, as far as contacts go, it its probably worth your effort to put them into your google contacts now that you are entering them anyway... Just click Contacts in gmail (on your computer)and go to town, you will thank me later. Well, maybe not, but it its a handy time saver for synching contacts in the future

Netflix for Android Launched Officially

According to the announcement, the Nexus S (which is a Galaxy S with a curved screen, NFC, and GB) is supported for streaming, even though it's supposed to only be available for Snapdragons, and not yet for Hummingbird.
Anyone manage to snag the APK yet? It won't let me install from the Market, even though even Google thinks I'm running a Nexus S (when in reality, it's just a Fascinate with CM7).

If I can get my hands on the build.prop from either the Nexus S on AT&T or the Nexus S 4G, then I might be able to figure out the pertinent tweaks to make the Fascinate appear as either of those to the app when it tries to stream.
If it runs and streams on the NS, then the purported hardware limitation that was supposed to be there doesn't exist, and they're implementing the device lockout entirely in software. This means it will be easy to hack around, and probably be able to do so cleanly without hammering any important settings for the phone.
Edit: The Incredible (and presumably, by extension, the Thunderbolt) is supported, so it's not a carrier lockout, either. This tells me that it's only software, which is heartening.

Ok, so I was in the virus kingdom rom thread and seen this asked a couple of times.
I found this info on another site, I'll past the link in a few but here are the instructions...
So how’s it done? Well, the instructions are actually fairly straightforward, and come courtesy of tipster/redditor natemckn:
Root is required. Make a Nandroid backup! (I accidentally deleted by build.prop file and bootlooped my phone)
Download ES File Explorer (Or any other root file editor)
In ES File Explorer, go into Setting > Root Settings and enable both check boxes
Navigate to /system/ and copy/paste build.prop to /sdcard/ (just in case)
Open & edit /system/build.prop
Change the following lines to make your phone think it is a HTC G2:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
Reboot the phone
Install the netflix apk (if you haven’t already)
Enjoy
Update: Apparently you don’t need to do the lines that are crossed out in Step 6 – only the product model and manufacturer need to be changed.Also, it appears that this is hit-or-miss at the moment. Works for some, partially (but not really) for others.
Heres the link,, if its not clickable its because I'm doing this from my phone, so copy and paste.

1. HTC Incredible with Android 2.2
2. HTC Nexus One with Android 2.2, 2.3
3. HTC Evo 4G with Android 2.2
4. HTC G2 with Android 2.2
5. Samsung Nexus S with Android 2.3.
Thank you for repeating the information that we already know.
We're aware of the devices it works on, we're trying to make our devices masquerade as one of those in an attempt to get streaming working.
Not much luck so far. Time to work now. Might hack on it some more tonight.
The apk running around here doesn't work, either. At least not on 2.2.
Ok, so I said I was going to quit, but it's just too juicy.
Here's what I've found:
Work on Nexus S with GB. The NS is identical to the rest of the Galaxy S line from a hardware standpoint (with the exception of the NFC and curved screen, which have nothing to do with things). The only difference between them is the software.
Some more digging revealed that the key difference in a device working or not working is the Stagefright media framework, which is supposed to be the stock setup in 2.2, but OEMs mostly felt like they needed to hack it out in favor of their own stuff.
So... To get this working on the Fascinate, we need one of the following:
1. A CM7/AOSP GB build with working video codecs (we're almost there on that point)
2. A CM6/AOSP FroYo build with Stagefright media framework in place.
3. A custom ROM with the Stagefright framework hacked in.

Netflix is not 'supported' on my device (Captivate), but it works for me and all others that are running a Gingerbread ROM based off the i9000 source. All you have to do is sideload the .apk and sign-in.
I know others have also gotten things to work (even on a Nook Color) by spoofing the device by edititing build.prop as follows:
ro.product.model=HTC Vision
ro.product.brand=tmobile
ro.product.name=vision
ro.product.device=vision
ro.product.board=vision
ro.product.manufacturer=HTC
ro.build.fingerprint=tmobile/htc_vision/vision/vision:2.2/FRF91/277427:user/release-keys
I'm curious if anyone here has gotten creative and found a way to make things work.

I'm curious if anyone here has gotten creative and found a way to make things work.

Well then I guess your best bet is to buy an A500 and do what you just suggested yourself.
That method does not work 100% yet from what I have been reading. Even across various roms on a supported device.

That thread has zero valuable information. Please read this thread (a whole 4 posts prior to your comment) before sighing and pointing me to a post that fails to respond to the clarified question I asked in the third post of this thread. I was hoping someone might have tried to push past 'not a supported device' and try some tricks.

Totally valid suggestion. If I pick one up this weekend I'll give it a try. Obviously, HC is a different animal from GB, but you never know (and Tegra 2 differs from Hummingbird). I'll report back if I learn anything interesting.
Considering Nvidia is more focused on further fragmentation with "Tegra Zone" and working with Google for $5 movie rentals, I would not hold my breath for an official Netflix app. Seems the lack of one is by design.
Yes, the iPad is evil, but at least you have the option of iTune downloads AND Netflix. Not just the Google rentals, that seems a blatant effort to force folks to pay $5 a pop, rather than consumers use their Netflix account that THEY ALREADY PAY FOR.
