hello
I use a distro of linux mepis 3.3.1 and run Win4lin 9x with windows 98 as the platform though I don't seam to sync through the serial... I connect it up and both devices start to sync then my XDA IIi says its connected where the activesync says not connected and doesn't work.
Any one tried activesync on win4lin and had any luck?
thanks
OR
Does any one use linux and use a good programme allowing sync with programes like Kmail??
Please let me know this is driving me mad.
thank you
googled this in a flash
http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/
Yeah I found this, just wondered if anyone had tried one thats all becuase if it works I will d/l it but if no one knows then I will try.
Mostly want some one else to have tried it as the KDE version Kitchen requires compiling and that can be a pain.
but thank you any how.
Hello,
Just upgraded my laptop to Windows Vista. I used to run a program called ActiveSyncRemoteDisplay from Microsoft under XP. This no longer runs under Vista and I haven't found a replacement.
Does anyone currently use a Remote Display (Free preferably) under Vista?
Thanks a million

Steven,
Thanks for the reply. I had already come accross that link and tried it. Unfortunately, the Remote Display software does not install under Vista. I'm getting "ERROR_MISSING_CEAPPMGR entry not found in string table"
I'll keep hunting!
Thanks again.

Just copy this to your device and install it from there - this is the same MS CERdisplay program but without the need to install it on your device via ActiveSync
Smiffy.

I installed the CAB file on my device and launch CERHost.EXE on my laptop. My phone (Cingular 8525) is tethered to my laptop and connected. Once I open CERDisp.EXE from my device, I enter PPP_PEER as the address to connect to. The Caption on the CERHost.EXE changes to WM_VPALHORIES which is my phone name however the image from the device is not shown on the computer. I get no errors at all during this process.
Any advice on what I should do next?
Thanks

No, it simply allows you to see your mobile device screen from your computer screen (and control your device from your computer). I use this for training.
Try this one...
I don't know if this works under Vi$ta - it does a great job on XP. It's called MyMobiler: www.mtux.com

Gave it a shot and I'm getting the same results as the previous ones I tried. Device connects, however nothing is being displayed on the PC.
The hunt continues ... thanks for your help.

Thanks for that link, chandalf. That's a very nice little program.
To answer the original question, Pocket Controller is a commercial product that does what you need and the most recent version claims to work with Vista.
They do have a free trial so that you can test it to see. And, if it turns out that it doesn't work for you, you will be able to use them for tech support.

Got it to work!!!!!
I updated my HTC USB Sync drivers which in turn updated the Windows Mobile Device Center. MyMobiler now works as does the one Smiffy sent.
Thanks to all who helped me with this. I appreciate your time.

My Shift didn't arrive yet
So there's a thread about XP on Shift. How do you get managed to install XP on the device?
Is booting via USB-CDRom possible or is there another way like Sharing a CD-Drive via network as MacBookAir uses or creating a bootable USB-Stick?
Anyone tried to run/install Ubuntu or smth. similar?
thx in advance!

ubuntu 8.04 runs out of the box without much issues, you can even install it from vista itself using wubi-installer: http://wubi-installer.org/
-not working:
* resume after suspend
* touch screen (you have to use mouse)
-needs some tweaking:
* for 3g you need to install synce and use the usbtool to establish an activesync connection with snapvue through usb
* for wifi you need to manually compile the marvell 8686 drivers
- the rest works perfect (mouse, keyboard, bluetooth, screen backlight, sound, etc...)
I have also run slax from a pendrive, same issues as in ubuntu
That's great, i really want to do this. I want to try running Skype for Linux (which now does video) instead of the windows version. I'm pretty sure that the Linux version of Skype will be a little less processory hungry and work better.
How do you manually compile te drivers for wifi?
Any thoughts on enabling the touchscreen?
Ubuntu will bring out a version for umpc's:

Thank you so much; this is really great news! Reading about Google Android project I was dreaming about running linux on this machine but i didn`t hope it could be done so quickly...now i am working on kubuntu and i think it is going pretty well...I think Vista would make sense if one could have more powerful CPU and more RAM but of course with SP1 especially if you disable some power-hungry visual effects it is usable, nevertheless it is good to have an alternative OS...

Hi How are yo finding Ubuntu on the shift so far in terms of:
-Battery life compared to similar tasks in vista with the shift?
-Boot up time vs vista?
-Speed of response versus vista?
I'm not really bothered about use of linux on this device unless it has some real advantages or some must have application that xp of vista don't. I certainly see the advantage of windows mobile as there are some real advantages in battery power extra functionality for example with ubook reader for windows mobile the shift could be an excellent ebook readr.
I can't wait until I can put some money aside for one.

hi cr2 find attached dmesg, lspci & lsusb output. There are inside photos from the FCC, but it is much like a normal PC connected to a MSM7200 trough internal usb port, sharing screen and keyboard in a single box

- battery life in linux is similar to vista, probably a bit less.
-boot up is faster in linux compared to windows boot up, but slower if you just suspend vista. You can't suspend the shift under linux yet.
-linux as always is more responsive than vista, you can even enable all the eye-candy stuff (3d effects and such) and it is still faster than vista in that way.

Ok There is something wrong with the SDHCI driver, but i think it's easy to fix.
Dumping the amibios should be easy too.
the shift project is also working on proper drivers to fix the problems within linux using our friends who have then already. the proper work will begin soon when cmonex and ltxda get their devices.

I attach the touchscreen driver here, it seems to be a wacom device, however linux doesn't recognize it. I've tried to cat all the /dev/input/event* and /dev/ttyS* with no luck.
Finally suspend working like a charm
http://pof.eslack.org/blog/2008/04/21/suspend-resume-in-htc-shift/
pof,
i think you'd dump amibios, decompile the DSDT, and look for the plug and pray config.
If the wacom driver is on a serial port, then it should be configured/activated there.
Opening the File in Plaintext Editor Shows some Debug-Information and API-References. Seems to do it "real serial" .. ?

Yesterday night we where looking at it with cr2, we're not sure yet if is serial or connected via the i2c bus. The Vista driver does not give much clues, and linux can't see the device directly.
As you can use the touchscreen in windows mobile (msm7200) at the same time than in the intel side, i think the i2c bus has more possibilities.
I mailed HTC during the weekend asking for a datasheet or some extra information, but haven't received an answer yet.
Rather than hooking up my G1 via USB, is it possible to access the SD card via WiFi from a PC or Mac?

I believe installing a FTP server app on your phone can solve this. I have used SwiFTP from Market and it works like a charm.

There is a market app called aFile (used to be Discover) that works for this very well.

hmmm...
I use the app on a daily basis and it has never once crashed or not worked. Guess I'm just lucky.
aFile/Discover doesn't work all that well anymore. It --used-- to work great, but the developer hasn't seemed to keep up with the OS changes. Combine the developers update plus the "Cupcake" releases, you get problems connecting.
So, here's a couple of suggestions. All of these connect over WiFi.
Probably the easiest is Estrongs File Explorer. It will allow you to connect to Windows shares (Samba shares) from your phone and transfer files in either direction.
Another very simple solution is to run SwiFTP on your phone. It's a simple FTP server for your phone. Then you can use Filezilla (or any FTP program on your computer) to connect to your phone via FTP and transfer files back and forth. Make sure you keep the port as 2121, otherwise it won't work.
My personal favorite is a bit different. I set up a Filezilla server on my home network. It's very simple to set up. Then use AndFTP on your phone to connect to the FTP server you are running on your computer. You can take it one step further and have it installed on your home network. Go to dynsys.org and register there. Follow the instructions (fairly simple). This will give you the added benefit of being able to access your files anywhere in the world as long as the Filezilla server is running on your computer/network and your computer hasn't gone into sleep/hibernate AND you have your router configured correctly.
If you need help with any of this, please contact me. This is a feature that I've desperately needed, and I've looked at many different solutions and can probably help you make the right decision and get it working properly.
An another good FTP client for Windows is Total Commander. In the (unlikely ) case you are not using it already, it is a very good file manager. I almost cannot live without it
Thanks blueheeler for the info.

It may have something to do with the combination of things.
I know "Discover" worked for me, then aFile came out, and it doesn't.
Here's what I'm using:
Vista x64 Ultimate (also tried on Win 7 RC x64)
Belkin router
JF1.51 (also tried with various Dude versions)
Broadcom 4322AG WiFi driver
I did recently switch from 32 bit Windows to 64 bit if that makes a difference.
Tried with:
a) with Vista firewall
b) Vista's firewall disabled + phone in DMZ
c) Vista's firewall disabled + laptop in DMZ
d) Vista firewall off + router firewall off
Is there any way I can sync the two up even though they're operating on different a O/S? I'm not that computer savvy, so please, be easy on me. I tried plugging it into my Macbook using the USB cable, but nothing happens. When I plugged it into my roommate's PC, everything worked fine. But I'd like to be able to get my pictures, calendars, and everything else sync'd up to my phone, is it possible to do this with a Macbook? Or am I going to have to get rid of my X1?
Never used it myself, but I heard The Missing Sync is an ok option.
There might even be a few others. Here, let me Google that for you.
You can try Eltima Syncmate,
(I use it on my iMac)
They have a free version as well as an Expert edition.
The free version is enough to sync, but if you want to activate the expert functions (which are very handy) you need to buy a license.
Regards,
EqX
Syncmate is best in my opinion, buy the expert edition, its worth every penny, the missing sync gave me a kernel panic as soon as i plugged in my x1
i just wish SE would make a SEUS application for os x too
Thanks guys. What are some of the expert functions that the free version doesn't have? I don't really be constrained by having a Macbook of everything I can do with this phone using a PC.

There is a detailed list on Etima's site.
(besides, all the goodies that are expert, are also listed in the freeware version with the tag: expert, so you see what you miss).

Well mate if you have an installer of windows xp/vista, you can install it in your macbook using bootcamp. its easy to install and yes you will used to for your x1 without any hassle.

What exactly do you mean with "phone memory"?
You can attach your X1 as a drive to your mac, and it will appear as a disk.
Or you can sync contacts/iCal/mail/etc in any way you wish..
You can even browse the sms conversations (expert)..

EqX
I only have the basic version, but it doesn't let me browse the contents of my x1 on my macbook. I plugged it in, and it doesn't show up as a disk, nothing shows up at all under my list of devices when I plug it into my macbook. Do I need the full version?

Nah, you probably set the device to connect as drive, you need to let it connect through "activesync".
Eltima will start up as soon as it detects a device.
