[Q] News Widget stuck - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Wondering if anyone else is experiencing this - the HTC News widget looks like it's in an "Updating..." loop, but never gets updated with the current news.
Not sure if this is an HTC / Google Reader / etc. bug. I tried it with different feeds - Engadget, BBC, CNN.

Please post questions in the Q&A section.

News Widget Stuck
Yep. It seems very common. I've read about lots of people with the problem. Mine broke after about a week, my wife's a few days later. The alleged fix from TMOB is to restore the device to factory defaults. That will fix it... until the next time it breaks.
To say that is an unacceptable answer really doesn't capture my contempt for it and I certainly did not try it.
Most people seem to like News Rob. However I got News Reader (the one with the conventional RSS icon). It doesn't have a widget, but otherwise seems very good. It is linked to Google Reader as is News Rob. There are A LOT of news readers and at least half a dozen linked to reader, plus I read Google has just released an Android version of Reader, although it got very bad reviews.
So, forget the news application, it has a fatal bug. Spend a while in the marketplace and get a different one. It will be a much better use of your time.
Terry

Glad to hear I'm not alone. Thx for your suggestions.

Same... I had my nexus one unplugged for 2 hours and i was down to 42% battery after unplugging with a full charge. Thats on wifi and screen brightness off.. =) good times
Welcome to the club
Root..root...root....
Why root?
- Can change any custom rom you want...Froyo, CM, desire...anything..
- Overclock the CPU to 1.113GHz!!!
- Change basically anything on the phone..icons, notification bars, themes, settings, trackball colours, wifi tethering
- Better battery life by using custom kernels (im getting 24-26hrs battery life - moderate to heavy usage)
- Nandroid backups, titanium backup....
- Change camera app to desire or the newly found 720P HI-DEF recording...
- and much more
This will make ure phone to be the best smartphone on the planet...

My advice:
- don't root it yet. Wait for FroYo OTA. Once you're on official froyo, see if root is even beneficial to you or not. The longer u stay 100% covered on warranty, the safer you'll feel.
- get these:
swype (there's apk here somewhere)
barcode scanner (to get apps by scanning barcodes on webpages)
aldiko reader (ebook reader app, AWESOME)
astro file manager (doh)
battery left widget (approximates your battery time left)
DigiClock widget (best clock widget, imo)
flashlight app for non-rooted N1s (there's one on market, forgot name)
NewsRob (RSS reader from your google news account, free)
ShopSavvy (probably the best app ever created - scan any product barcode, it tells you local+web prices)
xda app (don't forget to turn off signature in the settings)
twitter (official app is the best, imo)
Enjoy and congrats!

Yep. AFAIK, this one is better than the more recent one (people are having problems with the newer version).
This one works like a champ.
i waited 3 months before rooting my nexus, which i just did a week ago. the number 1 best thing about rooting is nand backups! you can create an exact copy of your entire phone at an instant in time. every single part of the phone is backed up from each text message down to every item in your call log. and obviously the apps are included. even whatever theme you are using, like a black notification bar, etc.
so no matter how bad you screw up your phone, or want to experiment, you can always bring it right back to any instant in time within a few minutes. that's my biggest feature after rooting.
and of course trying out different ROMs, like cyanogen, froyo, etc.

IS there a way you know of to automatically go to the last tweet you read on twitter? other than this I Would agree its the best. I used to use Twicca and that managed this simple task.
wow thanks for all the advice guys i will be looking at some of those apps..as far as rooting i know all the benefits but im not as advanced to perform any of those tasks..also i use a mac does that make a difference in doing any of that stuff..
i would like to try that swipe how to put it on my phone just put it on my sd card and run it?
I just got my Nexus One yesterday and thoroughly enjoying it!
I got my nexus 2 weeks ago and had it rooted within and hour of opening the box
I got into Android about a month ago when I got my first G1 off craigslist to experiment with (then bought 4 more off craigslist, I'm an addict lol, go big or go home).
Being able to change stuff on the phone to make it more usable / faster is the best thing. I don't think I could use a stock OS phone.

In all honestly, Android on the Nexus is the only stock OS I've been able to use for more than a day without hacking it or wishing I could hack/change it (like on dumbphones). I'm still on stock because I am waiting for Froyo and still deciding whether root is worth losing 100% warranty.

What things to do to get the best out of SGS without 'Rooting'

I'm a new user of the SGS and am waiting patiently for my first Android phone to arrive. I have read many, many, many...did I say many post, here and on many other forums alike, concerning the SGS. I have read pros and cons and tips and tricks, but most have been on phones that have been 'Rooted'. I will like to defer from doing such thing(at least not yet) but would rather wait until Samsung releases the official Firmware that will supposedly clear all(most) of the major faults that the SGS has.
Now I would like this to be an official thread that would help those of us, who have a stocked SGS and may or may not be experiencing major lag, to help give tips on how to improve the stock SGS as it is already; for speed, what programs to use etc. It would be very comforting to establish what folks have installed on their phones and any recommendations to getting the best out of their stock SGS as possible, in waiting for the New Update Official Samsung firmware to be release.
So please, offer any advice or tips for tweaks or programs to get, maybe a place to get them if possible, so as to make life a little easier. Thank you.
I received my galaxys exactly a week ago and i immediately jumped onto the Market.
Make sure you have a google(gmail) account, as it connects the accounts.
My best downloads are as follows:
-3g watchdog. keeps an eye on your usage
-Astro . file manager
-Audiomanager. speaks for itself
-facebook
-galactic core free . Epic live wallpaper
-mario live wallpaper . not available on market, google it.
-opera mini- web browser, better than stock
-shake them all- THE BEST LIVE WALLPAPER EVA, moves droids react to accelerometer, sound and light.
-starfield,live wallpaper
-Task Manager. essential task manager for watching all your apps and services.
thats it, just search the market and XDA for other cool apps
Those are some really nice tips. I do appreciate. I also like to concur about the Opera Mini app. I use that on my N95 8gig at the moment and there's nothing that can come close. although, there are a few bugs that I think they kinda left out due to the Andriod fever, which I have apparently gotten Regardless, I am glad they have an android app of that in the market. I assume there is already a Market app on the phone, already, right?
Also. What about apps that you do not ever use? I read about not being able to remove them but is it possible to completely disable them?
The android market is pre-loaded onto the phone. there are many apps that come on the phone that are really useful. There are a couple of apps that you may not use but most of them are really useful.
I dont know that you are able to delete these stock apps but you can change the default apps. For example if chosen as default, Opera Mini opens up ALL web links and is really useful. The Stock browser is excellent but im used to opera as i used it on my Satio previously.
The model i bought was a 16GB version and 2GB is reserved for apps, ive also got a 16GB sd card so im not worried about storage.

Also been using Astro but I prefer Dolphin to Opera.(Used Opera mini on my N95)
BTW all: My first post on the forum so G'day to all.
G'day Mate
As the Dolphin compared to Opera mini?
Just go and try it,its also free from the market. You may still prefer Opera, doesnt matter.Give it a go anyway.
I will when I get my phone. That is why I asked. I do not have my phone yet.
Just a suggestion which hasn't been mentioned yet is to try LauncherPro or ADWLauncher as it makes customizing your home windows much easier. I love being able to customize the info I really want to see. Also spend some time using swype and you won't want to go back.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I tried the Opera mini 5.1.21126 version and I think the tapping response is weaker than the stock browser. I had to tap several times to get a response. Either that or the mini is not calibrated accurately. I've reverted back to the stock browser. I will give Dolphin a go.

How to rate/review from the market? Gone since Xoom...

I swear I'm braindead here, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to rate or review apps on the Xooms overly fancy market interface. I've purchased a few apps, and want to praise their Honeycomb usability (Smart Keyboard Pro with Japanese Language pack for my wife, among others), but it seems... like, read only.
How do I submit my own rating? I've poked all over the screen and tried to see if there was any contextual thing I was missing...
Dur...?

I don't have my Xoom right in front of me to check, but if this functionality isn't present right now, I bet it is coming soon. I have already seen the Android Market app update twice since I got my Xoom two days ago.
huh, guess I'll keep checking back then.
Same issue. Wonder if its to prevent all the market ratings from getting flooded with 'not 3.0 compatible' comments before devs have a couple days to update things.

How did you get the smart keyboard pro to work?
it crashes the second I hit settings ?
Does Market app update itself automatically? I haven't seen a update yet.
The question has been talked about before in other threads and I can verify its true. (no you can't leave a review with the market app on the xoom, use your web browser and go to market.android.com to leave a review, and quit thinking its some sort of conspiracy). I appreciate people trying to answer the question, but if you don't know then don't bother replying, and if its not related start another thread (after you have searched of coarse).
Sorry on reading that back it sounded rather *****y, maybe I am in fact rather *****y..

[Q] New to XOOM and a few questions

Hi all
I am getting to like my XOOM now but am experiencing a few issues and hope someone can help me out with some info.
First and foremost ... do we have any communications from moto or google regarding time line for an update? In particular for the sd card and also far more generally for the whole honeycomb experience.
Next, the ebay app, the market tells me it isn't available in my region (uk) in the same way the bbc iplayer app does. I know the bbc one isn't available yet but am struggling tto confirm if that if the case for the ebay app.
I have seen a few screenshots that seem to suggest that the market can be filtered for tablet app? I cant see how ... perhaps I imagined this feature?
Some of the time I am finding the overall responsiveness pretty poor and I can't ally work out why. Anyone else getting similar issues?
Lastly ... in writing this post I have made afew typos and correcting them has been a nightmare with the text selector arrow and the cursor getting misaligned ... normal or just me?
Thanks for any info
Last I did read some news about SD card update, it said that the update is imminent, no idea what this actually means.
About your last question, yes this happens to me also.
Sorry, I can't help you with the other questions.
As far as the Sd card update I have asked that question on the moto forum and all i ever get back is that they are drafting an official response about the card, but that was about two weeks ago that they said that. Guess it takes two weeks to put out a response about a SD card that devs here already got working. Of course no one knows whether it is Googles fault for not releasing the source or Moto's for not telling us what is going on. I would count on getting it working maybe when the 4gLTE upgrade is rolling out.
As far as the market I have no idea sorry.

Cheers guys
Next thing ... while awaiting any more concrete answers to the other stuff ...
The "darkness " of honeycomb and android generally is all well and good as a differentiating design feature compared to iOS but really I think a "light " theme would go a long way to improving the overall feel. I guess though that is something only root and a few tweaks will offer? I don't get it, before phones got "smart " a big thing was the ability to theme them but now there is next to no flexibility :-(
Also noticing a lot of widget lag when waking the device ... and I have 2 mail widgets as I have to gmail accounts ... at least one of them spends a lot of time "empty " awaiting an update, is this also standard for other users?
Thanks again

Remote Wipe Stolen a500

Hey guys and gals,
Tonight my a500 was stolen. I work in sales and use it to look things on the net for customers (like price comparisons, etc) and use it for the website and lots of other business-type things (as well as lots of personal pics etc).
But, unfortunately when my back was turned, someone swiped it...!!!! argh:angry:
I had the newest release of jellybean on it from the forums here on xda, but had no remote wipe app installed (never even crossed my mind to do it). Therefore, I'm wondering if the is any remote wipe abilities in jellybean or if there was an app by chance that i had installed that would have this feature hidden (like onavo or norton utilities... reading now).
If anyone can help that would be amazing! Changed all my passwords, etc. So, I should be fine there. thanks guys

Just cherish the thought of what's going to happen when he decides jb is too buggy, and tries to install a different rom.

Still sorry to hear it got pinched. I know the feeling.

Well, I don't have a lot of faith in those types of apps. They usually only work if an idiot steals it. Over here, pinching phones and tabs is big business, and usually done by pro's. They're quick to dump the device to another agent, who runs a stock full rom on it, clones the IMEI number from a good device , then dumps it to one of the umpteen million fly by night resellers. They (moscow govt) talked about cracking down on multiple PH number/IMEI combinations, then quickly realized over half the devices in Russia would stop working! Including their own!
Best thing to do, never let it out of your sight. Get a new device, like I did my phone, and the pain goes away.
But then again, maybe your culprit is a true idiot, and will post fotos to your facebook account!!!!!

The last person to steal one of my phones was a true idiot. This happened at my school and good thing I'm done with school. I was in class and had my phone charging and I had it out because I trusted most everyone in the room and would known who would have taken it.
So he asked if it was my phone and about a minute later he leaves the room. I noticed it was gone and others around me saw him take it. (Not obvious at all)
So I had the Vipre Mobile Security beta installed so I immediately logged into the web interface to activate GPS tracking and set off the alarm. Except when I logged in the service hadn't communicated when the app/phone in over a month so it was useless.
Over the period of the next 24 hours he had used the phone to take photos, delete everything on my sdcard, spam my YouTube feed with countless videos, and make voice calls to their own friends and family. So I looked on my carrier's account management and found all these numbers. Between the school staff and police it was possible to track the calls back to his identity. I got my phone back the next day...without the case and screen protector, sucks that they kept that.
So the lesson is make sure you have good, working anti theft solutions with cascading failsafes.
The next app I installed after ditching Vipre was Avast. This was a good solution with some flaws. Avast was one of the first Play Store security apps to utilize root access. Because of root in addition to setting as a device administrator it was also installed as a system service and app. This made it persistent and harder to remove.
The issue with avast was since the app was in /system and not /data it would have to be completely reconfigured after flashing each nightly update. Sometimes I'd forget and then it wouldn't work. It claimed to support the CM backup script except it was designed for CM7 and CM9 uses a different type of backup.
The other issue with avast was there was no web interface. You could only send commands through SMS.
Since I got my Nexus I bought Cerberus anti theft its perfect. It has system app support. Instead of a user setup it apparently registers the device ID or SIM or something and loads the user account from the cloud server. So all I do is add the apk to the CM backup list and it auto configures when installed. I can use SMS control or the website. I can monitor and control pretty much the entire phone and it takes a front camera photo on invalid pass code.
I check weekly to ensure its still running and it hasn't failed once.
As a failsafe I also have the first screen splash modded to my contact info in case of loss. Its encrypted so if anything maybe only a boot loader update could remove it.

I think that only works if you accept all the tracking disclaimers to enable location history and not many people have history turned on.
I guess the lesson is you can't let your guard down for even a second. One time I let a friend sync their iPod touch on my computer since they didn't have a PC and they ended up snatching my classic monochrome iPod. I'm still upset to this day since they didn't take my old iPod touch instead. That just proves the first gen iPod touch is so bad people won't even steal it.

oh yea def' just thought for pot-luck ,
it is a pitty when you let someone come into your house as a friendly gesture only to find them stealing from you,... ive had my fair share and also a fair share of miss-understandings thereafter because of a newly aquired paranoia..... but i think its 100% justified.
If you download the lookout app and install it, if you ever lose your tablet, on the lookout website you can see where it is, (if GPS was enabled when lost) you can also do a remote wipe, and a remote siren, make it put off an alarm remotely.
Its a good app to have just in case, but doesn't help if the app was not installed before being lost or stolen.

yeah sound like the prey app too , i can also send a popup message to the tab screen, be near the location displayed on the map and then activate a "S-SCARING" siren lol
also one good thing is prey uses the location services through wifi as well as gps, tells you the address of the current and last wifi hotspots logged into
so if it says currently "wii hotspot mcdonalds fast food , thief street. lol go to the mcdonalds and set off the alarms,...clearly see your tablet...and a jackass who need a beating. :highfive::highfive::highfive::highfive:

and thanks guys for al of the advice! still no luck with the tab i think the worst part of it is was that i was really getting to love it. like the development here, especially with jb!, is fantastic. and i was a kickstarter supporter for chameleon and now seeing the new updates really puts salt on the wound. lol. in the next month i'll need another tablet, so im debating on finding another 2nd hand one for the price of a nexus 7, or just getting the 7. only thing is though, is the size....
thanks again.
I'm assuming you've looked into "Plan B" on the Android market, right? It automatically installs from the market on your tablet, and broadcasts location immediately on install. Not sure how accurate or helpful it is, but if you haven't tried it yet... you probably should.
The other option is to put out some Wanted To Buy ads...
