[Q] Portable hotspot? - Galaxy Tab General

Can I use the Galaxy tab as a portable hotspot?
I know it has froyo and it should be possible but I want to be sure before buying.
Thanks

I'm not sure what the case is with other carriers versions, but the verizon tab can, though it's through their own app rather than what's built into froyo. It doesn't cost anything extra.

Thanks for the reply.
So, you don't have that on settings or it just doesn't work?

I have the T-Mo version, and the wifi hotspot works the same as for my N1.

I have a Bell tab, I can use it as a wifi hostpot built in. When or if you go to buy just look at one to see if its got it. I have it under settings > Wireless and network > Mobile AP

Do you use your Galaxy Tab with a SIM Card for Data information?

Guys,
I am seriously considering purchasing a Galaxy Tab to go with my Galaxy S.
My SGS already has a SIM card and as the Tab primarily won't be used outside of a Wifi area be that Home or Work and am unlikely to use the Tab as a Phone/SMS, I am wondering whether or not to bother purchasing a SIM Card to go with the Tab.
Percentage wise it should be something like 80% Wifi available.
Therefore, could you please let me know how you use your Tab and for those that don't use a SIM Card (be that for Data or Phone/SMS) do you find any restrictions?
Restrictions could be in the form of when the Tab is switched off (screen off only), as there is no SIM for any Data connection how do you find the Tab receives any internet updates.
When my SGS has it's screen switched off wifi is disabled and as such any data is sent through my SIM Card data plan. This keeps the phone updated be that email messages or App updates.
As such with no Data plan on the Tab how do you receive any email/App updates?

Go into Wireless and Networks, WiFi Settings, hit the Menu button, Advanced, WiFi Sleep Policy, and choose Never. There ya go, WiFi stays on when the device is asleep. This should be the default on all Android devices, but it's not.
WiFi uses far less battery than 3G, even if left on while sleeping, and of course it doesn't burn your data plan.

Thanks... Okay, that's got rid of that problem.
Anyone else have any opinions on whether or not to use the Tab with a SIM Card?
I can justify getting the Tab but I can't justify buying another SIM Card.... unless the advantages outweigh the costs.
Get a 10buck data only card and leave it plugged in. If you think you're going away for a bit, pay 10 bucks to re-enable it for that trip and be done!

Don't think they do a Data card for that price in the UK.
You can get a £10 SIM Card from the likes of T-Mobile but it's still £10 every month regardless of whether you use it or not.
Hey I don't have a galaxy tab used to have an alas before it bricked. Anyway there is no need to buy a simcard just Google advisable.apk. Its a mod that allows you to establish an ad-hoc connection to pull internet from a mobile or computers ad hoc connection

Are you sure you have the name correct?

Not so.
There are plenty of PAYG deals doing around that allow you to do.
For example -
3.
T-Mobile do a £2 per day deal which is quite good.
My personal favourite would be GiffGaff if there was any kind of O2 signal where I live.
EDIT - actually, my new personal favourite would be TMo 6MONTHWEB for £20, which gives you 1GB a month for 6 months for only £20!
As far as I'm aware, all of these are effectively "pay as you play" options. If you don't need to use the internet from one month to the next, just don't use the SIM, and when you need to ensure you have enough credit to buy an add-on/goody bag whatever.

Dave

Hi Beards
FYI, T-mobile US no contract Tab comes with a SIM card unactivated.
Wifi works just fine in this configuration. It also works without SIM card however you get a message Emergency calls only.
Cheers
I have a sim for my tab. $20/month Bell Flex plan is cheap enoigh and I can cancel at any time and just tether with my desire. Wifi at home but HSPA everywhere else. Once the roms start coming out ill unlock amd just use my telus sim with a BT headset for calling. Using the bell sim allows me to text from my GT and I love that option.

I didn't put sim in my Tab at first, but now I got one and a tiny dataplan to go with it, since I mostly use wi-fi and work and home.

Really wifi uses less battery? So is there a way to fully disable 3g and use wifi only , thinking of just using a phone as a access point

Airplane mode and then WiFi back on works.
I believe you can use the XDA Superpower app.

Switch to GSM only which will leave the phone operational, or airplane mode with wifi on to completely switch off cellular radio.

Interesting comments.
I was not aware you could obtain a SIM card with Data for such a cheap price.
However, it's nothing really to do with the money, I'm fortunate to be able to afford an additional card without even thinking of any financial consequences. I am though more interested in hearing how you use the Tab and how you get around the problems.
Having said that I know what will happen; I'll get the Tab and then end up purchasing another SIM Card with all the trimmings for something like £15 to £20 a month just for ease of use.
this is wierd i have it set to never sleep wifi but it seems like everytime the screen is off the wifi does sleep, i am using the modified wpa_supplicant to connect to my ad_hoc...

Bell charges $649, but also requires you sign up for at least one months' service (minimum $20, but they bill for that), and there's the $35 service fee (which they may charge on the spot, or they may bill you for, or even waive).
Cancel the data plan as soon as you leave the store, you're still out $55+tax but have a month's service to show for it. Or keep it on for two months and get a $50 credit, which after taxes means you get those two months for free, and THEN cancel.
There are no other options, though you may be able to talk a Best Buy or Futureshop flunkie to sell you one outright with no activation, but that's very hit or miss.

Wireless Tethering

Does anyone know if the Wireless Tether App for rooted devices works on the Tab? I can't get it to work on my end and most of the information online talks about tethering the tab to a phone. Thanks for any help you can provide.
I haven't tried it myself, but did research this and the answer I got was yes.
Why do you need to use a third party application why the tab natively has access point function already?
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
Ive tested tethering with att and simple mobile sim both work with the stock settings options. Also used it as a hot spot.
Because some carriers, Sprint as an example want another 30 per month for that functionality. Thieves I tell you!

Cyanogenmod 11S Tethering anonymity concerns.

My cell carrier Cricket Wireless recently merged with AIO wireless and switched from CDMA to GSM. I was given to March to get a new phone because my Galaxy S3 would not work on their network anymore since they switched to GSM.
Since they merged companies they also came out with all new wireless plans.. I was on the old plan which included tethering..
But I just got a OnePlus One since I needed to buy a GSM phone and had to switch to one of their new plans.. The thing is none of their new plans offer tethering, which is a huge step backwards if you ask me.. If they offered tethering still I would gladly pay for it but they just completely screwed us.. THe made us all buy new phones and gimped our plans and stripped tethering out of them.
My OnePlus One will let me tether since its Cyanogenmod even though my plan of course doesn't have tethering anymore . BUT I am concerned that my carrier will find out I am using my Data for tethering..
Like I said if they still offered tethering I would pay for the plan that would include it but they completely stripped it out of all the plans. I need tethering for work so I'm not happy about it.
I Can use Wifi or Bluetooth tethering and it works but Does anyone know how I can protect myself from my carrier finding out that my data is being used for tethering? I've heard of Foxfi but I can already tether I don't need an app to let me tether I just need something to hide the fact I am. I know it has an addon for wifi tethering using a Proxy is this the best way for me to go? Should I get Foxfi and use Wifi Tethering and the addons Proxy option?
Or is there another way?
Thanks.
you can try switching user agent , google it but it usually doesn't work anymore, carriers knew it too
you may create a vpn tunnel but to avoid detection you'll have to operate the vpn from your phone not your laptop so there would be no way they could tell between the two sources of data, all of your traffic must use the same tunnel.

So maybe installing something on my phone to connect to VPN Book or some other free VPN would suffice? and then tethering my laptop with blueooth. ? Thanks.
I have a Oneplus one on Cricket also, and tether with foxfi, been doing so for about a month with maybe 1-2gb of tethering usage. No problems at all here, got foxfi because I was on Sprint, and I needed it then for sure, as my phone was a sprint phone. Foxfi has an option to hide your tethering usage, and I do use that, but IDK what it actually does.

Unlocking wifi sharing on Verizon S7

As the title states, I am looking for a way to use the "wifi sharing" feature that the Galaxy S7 and S7E's come with. Verizon appears to have not liked the idea of us using our phones as wifi repeaters, to tether a wifi signal from one to another. To be clear, I am not discussing a mobile Hotspot to tether your Mobile Data to another device, I am talking about sending a wifi connection from my S7 to another device.
Does anyone havery a work around? I am currently rooted and running stang5litre's V2 ROM. Thanks in advance.
Would likely require a framework edit or replacement (unlikely it's an easy swap) from another carriers rom. There's a tiny chance it's a system.prop or build.prop property that you could edit with a root file editor but I doubt it :/ Out of curiosity what on earth is your usecase for this? I ask this as a genuine question as someone in IT who uses hot spot all the time and I believe Sterling's rom has that enabled on non-tethered plans?
I would also like to know this information.
Could you explain "wifi sharing" a little better?
I have had Samsung phones for a while and have never seen that feature.
Wifi is either connected to a hotspot / router or peer to peer adhoc.
Are you wanting to have a internet connection from cellular or wifi or not at all?
Tagged for continued interest.
I just want to know how you rooted your phone...

Hey man did this work? I haven't gotten my S8 in the mail yet so I can't test it...
Mobile Hotspot and Tethering is available on the T-Mobile version by default, both in the settings menu and in quick launch
I have the verizon model and the hotspot option is available and working. Was not hidden.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, since AT&T had it removed from the quick settings on my S6.
Tethering Switch
by the way, if you want a really good "Hotspot Widget" that ACTUALLY works...and I literally tried probably 90% on the Play store and ONE did finally work...
Tethering Switch

DID work. It doesn't bring you to the HotSpot Settings first, and then you would have to turn on the HotSpot manually...this does it quickly, shows that it is enabled.

I tried this but didn't work for me with AT&T. I have a Tethering shorcut, but it takes you to the hotspot settings to turn it on manually like you mentioned. So I was excited to try this app out, however after I installed it, it just says it's Enabled (but it's not) and then when I tap it again it says Enabled again, not Disabled. Unless I go into my settings and turn it on, then the app will say Disabled (but doesn't really). So I guess I'll stick with what I have for now.
Hey I ended up returning my S8. I apologise for putting this info out about the Tethering app. It works perfectly on all my other ROMS. It is the only "widget" type app that worked on my LG G5 on stock rooted FW on MM. Anyway, I am not sure if you guys got Tethering to work on Verizon or whatever, but I had no issues with it on T-Mobile... However this app didn't work on T-Mobile on my S8 even.

You didn't by any chance purchase the phone directly from Samsung did you? I had the exact same problem with an S8 purchased directly from Samsung (got the free Gear VR promo) and I have Sprint.
There was no hotspot option anywhere in the setup menus. And of course, I did not notice this until 2 weeks later when I was on a trip. The hotel WiFi was messed up and I needed to use hotspot. It's not that it did not work, there was no option at all in Setup for Hotspot and Tethering.
I talked to Sprint, took it to a Sprint store for help, and talked to Samsung tech support. Nothing they all tried fixed it. Both Sprint and Samsung suggested the phone might be defective and I should pursue getting a replacement. That didn't make sense to me because WiFi and Cell Data were working fine, and hotspot is just software.
My fix was to do a full Factory Reset and then set it all up again. Tedious, but when it came back up, the Hotspot and Tethering option were there and it works perfectly now.
Recent update messed it up again?
Tried the adb method of Get/Push revealing Hotspot via Quick Tiles. Didn't work.
Any other ideas for regaining hotspot on the device? Without rooting?
Current date: Jan 7 2018.
i have same problem too, waiting for update
I tried that https://www.xda-developers.com/thre...ickbaity-tricks-for-your-new-galaxy-s8-or-s8/ but I cant even try itcoz I get "because an app etc about some permission", I tried to disable so many cant figure it out
So how does one Quick Toggle Tether? I use it all the time in my car
