In my quest to free up some phone memory, I tried to remove Google Maps and install it on the SDcard. I went into recovery and removed maps.apk from /system/app then did an ls to confirm it was gone. Then I rebooted the phone only to find that maps was still there. I went back into advanced shell and did an ls on /system/app and maps.apk is not there but I can start maps and it still shows up in applications. I tried to move it to SDcard but it wouldn't. My question is, where else could maps be installed? Is it even possible to uninstall maps or move it to the SDcard?

Does this completely remove the app? I mean in particular the listing in the app drawer, as well as in the "Manage Apps" section (if applicable). Also where will app data be stored, if used?
Thanks
yes, completely.
use "adb shell ls -1 /system/app/" to find out the exact name of the app you want to delete, it's caps sensitive.
you can try these 2 programs to remove apps
you should try using android commander or droid explorer. search for them in the forums. they are free and help out a lot.
+ For Droid Explorer: http://de.codeplex.com/ I use this and it is pretty handy. Though you can just be lazy like I usually am and just uninstall apps via Titanium Backup. I haven't tried Android Commander (yet, but maybe I should...) but in interest of being fair, you can find it here: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/Desktop-and-Shell/Windows/Android-Commander-93099.shtml and the official site is here, but didn't find it very well laid out (no offense PanPiotr...): http://androidcommander.com/
One other thing if you want to backup the app to your sd use cp /system/apps/appnname /sdcard/backup/appname

Sorry to ask such a noob question, but I just ran Unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever. Everything seemed to work correctly, but when I try and run androind commander to delete files it says I need root permissions. I saw the superuser permissions icon in my app list, but when I click it nothing happens. Did I miss something?

do you use other apps (setcpu, etc) that require Superuser permissions? any issues with those? if you do have other apps that have SU permissions, then uninstall/reinstall Android Commander... it should then request permission again.
if neither situation applies... use the directions above to remove the Superuser.apk file from /system/app and then go to this thread and download the new Superuser app

hey guys, i ve tried deleting the vvm-signed.apk in root explorer, and even though it shows that it was deleted, once i refresh its right there again.
i have stopped the the app from running in the background, and tried again, but still no luck.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!
You will have to do it with ADB or Terminal Emulator for now. Root Explorer is not allowing rw to /system yet.
What should I change the title of the sticky at the top of the thread to? It says read before posting...

My apologies didn't realize I was in general section...

I had no problem removing VVM and other system/app files with root explorer.
Hi,
I used Unrevoked's one-click Mac .app to root my Aria. I can boot into Recovery fine, but perhaps pertinently (perhaps not) there's a weird loop I can't get out of: (bottom of post at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829439)
Anyways, I installed CM6.1-Liberty afterwards using ROM Manager. Now I would like to delete the News and Weather application, but I'm finding it difficult:
I've tried with the Super Manager application, a ROOT manager. It has SuperUser permissions, it tried to mount /system as R/W when I navigate to it, but when I rename the .apk file, the file retains its old name.
I've also tried booting into Recovery, mounting /system from the Partitions menu, then using the Terminal Emulator to do 'mv /system/app/blah.apk /system/app/blah.apk.bak.' But mv complains that the directory is not empty! (are .apk's even considered directories?)
Is something messed up with my ROM? Anything else I can try?
With the phone in recovery and /system mounted, using terminal try navigating to the actual /system/app folder and then removing the .apk. Not sure if its the same as windows, which is the rm command.
rm application.apk

It worked! Booted into Recovery, mounted /system, connected via USB, opened up an adb shell, and was able to move the desired apk.
I tested this moving HtcLockScreen.apk on my Liberated ROM. Will try to move the News & Weather application on the CM ROM too, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Thanks!!!
All good. Thank you so much.
I've gotta wonder now: what is it about Recovery that lets you do this? I can't find much (if any) hard info on Recovery online, or hboot/fastboot for that matter. It's a little annoying having to power down my phone to adb stuff around, then powering back up.

I think it had to do with the fact that the aria is an s-on device (don't quote me on that). Whatever it is, the system can't be modified while android is running on the aria, so you have to boot into recovery to do it.

Not quite... You can put Titanium Backup into "Chuck Norris" mode and it will let you delete some system apps. Another easy way to achieve the same is to unzip the ROM, delete the .apk and .odex files you do not want, rezip it and re-flash. Bingo... the stuff you do not want is gone. You need to know what you are deleting though, some stuff is used by the system and other apps.
For anyone else whos wondering how to delete a non-uninstallable apk this is how I usually do it on windows (should be the same on mac too.)
- boot into recovery
-open new command promp
-adb shell mount /system
-adb shell rm -r /sysytem/app/apkname.apk
done and done, note letter case matters in apk name.
U can also extract the rom on ur computer and delete the .apks u don't want

I do not. from market?
edit: found it, is there a free way to do it?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
All You have to do is create a file named "enable_glass_lock" and put it in /data/local
If you need step by step on this I can tell you multiple ways (some easier then others, but the easy ones may cost for certain apps, such as root explorer)
I can't find /local in my data folder

Wtf really?
It should be there. What are you using to look?
Root explorer?
Try terminal. You can use any free terminal emulator from the market. Use thee commands
$ su
# ls
This should show a list of directories
then:
# CD data
# ls
Again a list should show up and local should be there.
You can also try to change to the local directory to see if you get any errors :
# CD local
If you can CD to local then it exists and you are either not looking properly or whatever app you are using doesn't see it. Terminal is sure fire way to see if it exists.
Several apps keep disappearing from the app drawer. Even if I move apps to internal memory. Anyone know a solution? If not I will be wiping the sdcard and doing a factory reset and reflash. I have tried nandroid restore and factory resets. Its just odd.

Have you tried fixing permissions? (try it in ROM manager first, then try again in Recovery)... Android is picky on file permissions, if they are set wrong, the OS may not like them...
System Apps needs to be 644 and owned by root.root. If you use root explorer to copy files, the copied files will be owned by SDcard.system and permissions will be wrong, it will be something like 755 or worst 777....
simple way to fix permissions for [SYSTEM APPS] with terminal emulator is do:
su
cd /system/app
chmod 644 *
chown root.root *
for [USER APPS]
su
cd /data/app
chmod 644 *
chown system.system *
The above will fix the system/user apps copied using any file explorer.... Remember every time you copy/move apps in and out of /system/app folder, the permissions and owner groups will all be f*cked up, you will need to run above to fix them...

Got it from Faux123 a kernel dev.
Hope this helped!
I think it had something to do with using titanium backup. Fix permissions never worked.
Did you try it through the terminal?

This just happened to me, over the last 2 days. I don't install new apps (I've got all the apps I need), I am on Ice Glacier v1.1.4 and it has been smooth as glass since I installed it back in December.
Two days ago, I noticed my Angry Birds icon on my desktop was a 'generic Android' icon. No app in the drawer. I have seen this issue with Titanium before, so for giggles, I just downloaded the app again from the Market. I opened Angry Birds and all of my data was there.
Last night, I noticed my xPiano app was gone, along with Angry Birds Seasons. Same thing - reinstalled via Market and all of my data was there.
So it's just the app that's vanishing, not my data for said app.
I'll try the terminal method to change/fix permissions, but it's curious that this happened "out of the blue." The only things that "changed"/happened were:
- A new version of Titanium was downloaded
- Titanium batch backup of Apps + Data runs nightly, then reboots
