[Q] How to root without Kies? Or help fix Kies? - Galaxy Tab General

Kies doesn't work with my T-Mobile tablet at all for some reason.
Plugged in to tablet, it installed drivers and asked me if I wanted to open up Kies. Well since the guide booklet mentioned nothing about this crappy software, I google searched and downloaded it from Samsungs website.
Finally Kies is installed and I plug in my tablet only to be greeted with "This device is not supported by Kies."
I uninstalled the drivers and Kies, rebooted, reinstalled Kies, let is "Recover the drivers for device." and still tells me that the t-mobile tablet is not supported.
Can I get a link to the correct version of Kies, or some help with this?
Without Kies, how would I go about rooting my new toy? =/

Download from here, http://innovator.samsungmobile.com/galaxyTab.do and screw kies

Z4Root doesn't work for you? It is painlessly simple.

Indeed z4 should work fine. As for kies, for me it only recognizes the tab when I'm using the stock touchwiz launcher...

I am running the stock Launcher. Z4 ended up working, sorry. I looked at the stickied noob rooting guide before I posted this thread.
That should be the advanced rooting guide, with a Z4 one being the noob one. =P

Frequently Asked Questions about NEW Froyo

-I can't root my phone after upgrading to 2.2!
use this thread and install the newest .zip extract, and you know the rest. this is done from a PC.
-I can't upgrade my phone to 2.2!
If you have KIES, use KIES MINI, found here scroll down and click download, this is a older version, so the first time you install it, it will take a while to get newest one, and it will install the drivers too.
-Unrecognized device on kies mini!
First, make sure you have ALL the drivers, and just to make sure, uninstall kies, and reinstall it, so it re-downloads the drivers. After it downloads the drivers, unconnect your USB if it is already connected, and reboot your computer, try connecting now, this has fixed most issues so far.
-I'm not getting Froyo through OTA
Tmobile has canceled OTA and made it through Samsung's Kies Mini. there might be a OTA later on, but now there isn't.
-Do i need to unroot first before upgrading?
Most likely, yes, or mini won't recognize your device. Be on the safe side and go to stock using ODIN.
-If none of the solutions on installing froyo work, then wait a few days till the devs make it flashable.
P.S. its not that different from the actual unofficial leaked one btw.
also, if there are more questions, i know i missed a bunch i couldn't think of any, include it to the thread, i'll look for a solution and post it here.
-If none of the solutions on installing froyo work, then wait a few days till the devs make it flashable.
Does this mean the developers plan to release an official ROM that can be flashed to the device using CMR? Would the update simply be copied to the SD card and selected from within the CMR interface?
That would be great.
Many Thanks,

Root help.

I started getting all the goods together to use Superoneclick since the Sprint update killed z4root. I cannot get Kies to connect to my device. I keep getting this error saying it needs to be in PC Studio mode which I cannot find. Please let me know what I am doing wrong!

I've been doing the same thing.
I've manages to get SuperOneClick to root my Tab by installing PDANet. I think the important aspect is the advice it gives during installation to install the PC driver from Junefabrics.com (not allowed to post links). I think all you need is the driver installed.
cheers

It didnt work for me. I actually got errors just trying to install PDANet. Z4root was so easy to use. Anyone else run into this issue? I did a Google search but have not found anything that works.
I used the drivers from the tutorial by ianandamy with SuperOneClick:

Didn't have any problems...

I have downloaded the drivers from acer directly 3 times and uninstalled/installed SEVERAL times... rebooted the cpu several times...
seems as if no matter what i do i cant get it to be seen by the computer... any ideas?

Not an issue with the rom. Shouldn't be anyhow. I might suspect the following;
1. Your USB cable?
2. When you installed drivers, "right" mouse click and select "run as administrator".
3. If your Acer drivers still won't install, Through Device Manager Install them manually. Don't let it search the PC.
4. If that doesn't work, get the Google USB Drivers from here;
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Extract to your PC. Again, install manually from Device manager (if you get a compatibility warning, ignore it)
thank you for the response.. i got so frustrated that i just installed the stock un rooted full package from the dev section of 3.1.. then updated to 3.2 and 3.2.1 and then for some reason my tablet wouldnt update after that... just kept telling me my system was up to date.. BS!!! i just downloaded the update from the same thread and decrypted and then manually installed... still confused as to why my tablet was telling me i was up to take when i was only on 3.2.1... anyway.. ill look into rooting stock ics tomorrow.. thanks again... oh and btw my computer recognized the tablet after i was no longer rooted and running stock.

Stranger things have happened. Believe me Technically, a rom "can" be guilty of USB issues, but the ICS releases out right now don't have these issues. Usually you find these on initial Beta releases.
You have to be a little careful when going back to stock. Acer put a stop to the ICS updates for awhile after they found the update process was bricking tablets. And, not all regions got updates before they stopped the program after a couple of days.
I would guess it tells you you;re up to date, as there is no ICS for it yet till they resume the program. Just a guess.
As far as I know, for the 500, they were supposed to resume ICS updates on the 27th May. Last I heard anyhow.
That's because it's Windows 7, lol.

And????
Actually, I have less issues on windows7. Yeah, you sometimes have to use "run as administrator". So I am not sure what your point is. Technically.
@MD i didnt know they stopped the release ? Win 7 doesnt cause these issues , sorry , for those of you wanting to do more with your android stick with Win 7 , its alot easier than running it through Linux! I use both!

[Q] Computer doesn't recognize USB S4 Sprint

Hello!
I think I somehow deleted a crucial file...
Okay, so my phone won't connect to my computer anymore. I am using Windows 8 so aside from Windows 8 automatically downloading the drivers on its own, I took additional steps and downloaded the drivers directly from samsungs site. I've tried using different ports, different usb cables and different computers. All that happens is a lightning bolt telling me my phone is charging.
My phone used to be rooted. When I noticed the problem, I unrooted the phone and tried restoring the phone. (I tried booting in recovery and doing it that way as well as restoring it through settings).
I've downloaded just about every app that has the word 'mount' in it to see if it will help and nothing happens.
Every time I restore my phone, the first thing that pops up is a notification saying that samsung link has stopped working. I'm on android 4.2.2
Whenever I've restored my phone in the past, I've always been successful but that was also because I was able to flash a factory ROM through odin on my computer.
When I put the phone in developer mode, it shows in the corner:
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
CURRENT STATUS: CUSTOM
Root checker says I am not rooted so I'm guessing that the BINARY and STATUS is coming up as custom because I am not fully unrooted (however, I had the problem of not being able to connect via usb when I was rooted).
If you have any ideas, I will definitely try them!
Oh, one more thing. Before my phone stopped connecting to my computer, I purchased additional batteries for my phone. I say this because It had been a fairly long time before I realized that my phone wouldn't connect to my computer because I no longer used my computer to charge my phone. And I say that because when I was rooted, I used titanium backup as well as CMW and neither was able to restore my phone back to a time that the usb worked again.
Okay, I think that's it. It's a lot of details but I didn't want to waste anyone's time coming up with ideas if I had already tried one.
Thank you!

Not sure if this will work, but there's a mobile odin you can try to use.
And you can get stock ROM there.

Do you know how I would install a rom that's prerooted without my phone being rooted or being able to connect to a computer via usb?

You're should have a custom recovery installed... At least that way you wouldn't need your computer. Otherwise you'd have to do it through Odin, but like you said in the OP, you can't connect to USB. Is your device rooted?

IF you can get to download mode Then jump over to this thread. Download the zipped file (from first or second post), extract the file - just to the .tar.md5 file.
While waiting for the download charger your phone to at least 50%
Also download Odin 3.x. get that here. unzip one of the Odins - I've been using 3.07
To launch Odin make sure you right-click and choose run as administrator!
Once Odin is launched go to the PDA box and select the .tar.md5 file you downloaded.
Make sure you have NOT selected re-partition. you can leave auto reboot and f.reset time checked though.
Now get into download mode - Power button + Home key + Volume down. Hold until you are asked to confirm going into download mode by selecting up volume.
Plug your phone into your computer and a com port should show in Odin3.
If it does then select start and wait till it finishes completely - it will say pass; your phone will actually reboot too.
Go through setup and there you go. new phone.
Then to root just use CF-Autoroot
My computer stopped recognizing my S4 recently, too. Odin wouldn't see it, couldn't connect it as a drive, etc. It had not been very long between when it worked and when it didn't, and I had installed a bunch of new Java stuff for (JDK7, Netbeans, Eclipse, etc). Tried the wife's S3 and same deal. So I uninstalled my Samsung drivers and Kies and booted my Win7 laptop. Reinstalled drivers, no joy. Reinstalled Kies and let it do all it's updates and that fixed the issue. Rooted, MDL, stock rom.

When uninstalling old drivers make sure you go to Device manager and go to View >Sho Hidden devices and remove them too! Remove everything - all left over devices, all software and even directories for said software; Revo uninstaller works well.
Also try a brand new USB cable. Though that may not be it, I've seen that alone solve all kinds of problems! Really just a brand new cable.
If you haven't tried this already, try and make sure USB debugging is enabled?

[Odin issue] N4 not being picked up on Windows 8.1

Howdy,
My question is, does Odin not work with Windows 8.1 in general? If you have managed to get Odin to register that a device has been connected was there any special way you managed to get around this?
Some background:
I mentioned this issue in the noob friendly section but it seems I am the only one having the issue there. So I'm asking around here if anyone has had this issue under Windows 8.1. All I wish to do is flash the unbranded firmware to remove carrier bloat-ware.
I've downloaded Odin 9.07/9/10 and have the same result, that the device just does not appear.
System is running Win8.1 and has driver signature disabled.
Kies is installed and picks up the device without error
Phone has USB debugging on and appears under 'Device Manager' when in Download mode.
I've had a look around and found nothing with this issue, watched folks do it in various videos too but they were using Win7.
Thanks for reading!

My guess is that you need to install Samsung's USB drivers for your device. Have a look at the instructions at this, and this page. I suspect that you haven't installed SAMSUNG's Android ADB Interface Driver (look at OP of the second thread), which is used by Odin if I'm not mistaken to talk to your phone and push the images you want via ADB.
Install the Samsung usb drivers!
Odin works fine on my windows 8.1 computer.

That was it. Thanks so much! I removed Kies, rebooted, installed the driver from samsung and rebooted again, after that Odin worked like a charm.
