QDL Success
That's why I spent an hour reading up on the QDL tool, and then 10 minutes later, I'm up on 2.2 without any hickups.
I hate doing it that way, just on the off chance something doesn't work, but, when you (have to not) depend on at&t to release an update, you are forced to take matters into your own hands. Until someone came up with the QDL tool, I wasn't about to take the chance of bricking my streak, since I paid full price off contract. My last 3 windows phones (all at&t) were the same way. You wait...wait...wait...and hope at&t gets its head out of its rear, and releases the updates, but, even months after the software is released, the carriers drag their heals because they want to lock everything down, and stick on their "value added software" (bloat). I had no problem with my windows phones, once again, thanks to the cooks on XDA. Once I found the QDL tool, and followed the instructions to the letter, I'm up running 2.2

if Froyo is delayed until '11 for AT&T locked phones... does this mean that Gingerbread will be a pipe dream until after that? WOuld seem a HUGE slap in the face for unlocked Streaks to get 2.3 while carrier locked are still on 1.6 waiting for 2.2
something to make you go hmmm?

Never underestimate the power of a carrier to really screw something up
I suspect it's probably 90% at&t's issue.

Although at&t obviously has it's problems, Dell did just get around to putting froyo on the streak anyway.
I don't think Dell has any intention of putting gingerbread. They may release a new phone with gingerbread though.

Yeah but unfortunately, if they haven't completed their testing they're just not going to do it.
If they had indeed completed testing they would have pushed it out to us UK owners.
I'm afraid you will have to bite the bullet and accept that it'll be launching with 1.6.
To be honest, as a newbie to android I'm not missing these 'extra' features to a great extent, the phone is wonderful as is, and i've no doubt I'll be ecstatic once it is released.
I am dreading the inevitable grunts screaming "I'll never buy the phone since it's 1.6 blah, blah, blah"
Im rolling with a N1 on 2.2 it will be a set back but soon as they drop 2.2, the streak might be the best android phone on the market.
Nothing like an N1 with a C-MOD But yeah 5" looks a little compelling... waiting to get my hands on one ...
Yeah I love my N1.
More Dell with a date on July 27

Indeed who cares!? Enjoy the device for a few months and Dell 'should' release the deal-breaking upgrade.

I gotta say, with the amount of time dell's taking to release this thing in the US, they better get android 2.2 on it asap.

I completely agree, I don't understand why those don't release this device 2.2 anyways. I would rather wait another month to make sure it does get 2.2 rather than taking their word for it.

I would sooner wait for 2.2 to be tweaked for the Streak rather than throwing it out with bugs and issues ,the GUI as I'm led believe its going to be custom not just a larger scale version of the standard GUI. So we have to wait for a few weeks for it to be released no problem its not like the phones featureless with 1.6.
Admittedly though if i was in the States i would be a little pissed with the lack of communication from Dell and knowing my cousins across the pond have had the Phone/Tablet(I'm still not decided) for almost two months but remember this isn't the norm as its normaly the other way around .
The Streak will of course get 2.2 in a few months, but the thing is...why bother with buying the device now, when in a few months either one of three things will happen:
1. The Streak gets updated to 2.2, still selling for $499 starting.
2. The Streak gets updated to 2.2, and additionally has to drop the price to keep their (now outdated) hardware relevant in the market.
3. A better phone (dual core? 1.5GHz? Android 2.3? 5"?) is released in the meantime, in which case, the Streak will be even less appealing.
I loved the Streak. I was all set to get one...in February. Then the EVO came out. And the Droid. And the Captivate. And the Streak STILL isn't out.
Dell mis-timed the market on this one, plain and simple. Had they released in the US in late Q1/early Q2, I think they'd have had the phone to beat...but they didn't. Now the ONLY thing they have up on everyone else is the form-factor (and possibly selling unlocked, which we still don't know yet). I just think that whatever they do at this point is going to be too little, too late, for too much. Sell it at $299 or something, unlocked, and then we'll talk, but short of that...I'm really not sure that I'll be sending my money Dell's way anymore.

I agree with all points you gave. We are in a strange times right now. My contract is up at TMO and dual cores are on the verge of coming out. I watched a video review of the streak and I never noticed but there is no dedicated "search" button to me is vital to android platform. More than likely I'll chill w/ my Nexus until Nov and see what happens. I really like the streak alot but they waited to long to release it

Yes, they would have done well to bring it to market earlier. But $299.- unlocked for this monster? How could that be possible? Even Fruitphone is about 800 unlocked. The only thing Dell ever had on everybody else is the fact that they have the ideal form factor -- maximum screen size that is still pocketable. And I don't see any other devices coming out in the near future. So not much has changed.

I hope this device is in ATT stores tomorrow for us to go see because they should learn from Google that the masses have to see the device before they purchase.

[Q] will Dell keep the Dec 3 "commitment"?

So, is it sounding/looking like Dell will deliver the 2.2 to the US ATT units on the 3rd? If I havent missed something very recent, they have postponed the O2 release to work out issues, meaning that, most likely, that will delay the ATT release even longer...
I bought on a Monday, returned on Wed, and repurchased on Friday thinking "official" Froyo was imminent, but find myself still waiting...$650 in, while my still Froyo-less Captivate with the jacked up GPS sits on my desk, and my wife "reminding" me every time she walks by that I didnt need a new phone...
I know I will be told to just update the Streak myself, but the stories I have read over the past couple weeks make me a little nervous, especially if there is an OTA right around the corner...
there is still plenty of unlocked phones that hasnt got the update yet, plus they did change the Dec 3 date to

Haha...that's funny about the wife's comments. My wife said the same thing about my captivate. I ended up giving it to her and flashing a 2.2 rom for her to speed it up.
I say go ahead and pull the trigger. It's easy enough to flash the stock 2.2 rom if you follow the directions in the forum. The phones amazing too. Sooooo much faster than the captivate at stock.

My guess is going to be a "no". Dell is really bad with keeping its promise esp when it comes to android. They got a new bee team of android. Even if they have your phone updated, it is still crap and nearly unuseable. They need to hire somebody like DJ_Steve. Until then, we are screwed.
Every other brand (HTC, Samsung, LG, etc...) pushing Android out there is the same. The only phone that got Froyo pretty much on time was the Nexus One.
Samsung promised 2.2 for the Galaxy S at the beginning of October, and their official Australian release which I only just got on mine a few days ago is really a laggy POS (same as 2.1)..
HTC has only just recently rolled out 2.2 for the Desire and other phones as well. Froyo on the Desire seems to be a very polished version so they've done their homework IMO.
LG.. well forget about LG, they're all stuck on 1.6 or 2.1 forever..
You guys have to remember that the Dell Streak is Dell's flagship device, and the first of its kind that they've released. Their team would be new, and I'm sure they're learning loads about the OS. Other such brand names have no excuse, especially Samsung, who has been playing with Android for ages.
So, the fact that Dell is where they are today with froyo (and to be honest, the 315 version on my Streak isnt that bad!) it can only get better from here people.

Quote from www.streaksmart.com
I've heard some share-worthy news about the Android 2.2 update for the AT&T-locked Streak from an anonymous tipster who has a close friend who works at Dell.
The story goes that this friend recently received an email at work stating that the OTA update was going to be released on January 16th or 17th of next year (barring any further delays).

Epic 4g froyo is out:)

Hey everyone, so this is probably the best evidence to date that we are going to be getting froyo very soon. Sprint is giving froyo over the air right now as we speak. I know that froyo for our vibrant has been beaten to death with a stick on these forums, but I think this is actually the first Real sign that we are getting this bad boy before the new year. Right? I mean they most likely have to have the u.s. Galaxy lines updates at about the same time, no? Anyways , just wanted to spread some christmas cheer

This is ridiculous, the vibrant was the first galaxy device in the US but will be the last to get Froyo. At this point I don't really care, I've been running Froyo for weeks anywase. Just another reason my beloved Tmobile is in last place and that will never change.

screw the epic 4g.....we get some cyanogenmod before them. they fail
The best and only evidence was the leaked jk6. And it's still not quite ready. So, I bet it will be a couple of weeks, at least.
yep, let down by tmobile and samsung both. but at this point i think we have tmobile to blame.
t mobile was the first US galaxy and i think the Epic was the last, now the epic gets official froyo first...
oh well, ive had it for a couple weeks, but I think we should offically have it by then
Leaks are basically final, im running jk6 now. Official won't be any different..

The Fascinate was the last but I understand your point.
I think this is the order of release is:
1 Vibrant
2 Captivate
3 Epic
4 Fascinate
A little disappointed by T-Mobile. We were the first to get the GS phones in the States and will be the last to get Froyo... (officially).
I said it in another thread, (mentioned above too..) that JK6 will probably be T-Mo's final revision of Froyo the Vibrant.
I agree that both samsumg and tmobile are not doing a good job on upgrading these phones. At this point I can guarantee that I will not continue with either of these two companies after my contact expires,BUT back to the point I made earlier, there is no way it will take more then a week or two for tmobile to upgrade, I think this is def the sign I have been waiting for.

The Epic 4G has a watered down version of TouchWiz.
2.2.1 means JK6 is NOT final, at least it should mean that.. the Epic got 2.2.1 first right?
Seeing as the Epic just got 2.2, I wouldn't put this on TMo. Samsung said we'd have 2.2 in September, then in November, and now it's December when the first SGS derivative gets anything. That isn't a carrier issue, it's Sammy.
I'm not leaving TMo, but I think I'm heading back to HTC after this experience. (Unless I get suckered into the Nexus S, which means I can get Sammy's great hardware and leave the software to Big G.)

T-Mobile has it's own custom firmware for the Vibrant. Have you played with an Epic? It's clearly not the same firmware.
Same for the Captivate and Fascinate.
2.2 rolled out overseas already for the international version, it's being held up by certain carriers but it IS out.
What could be the hold up besides the carrier differences between firmware?
HTC is no better, the Desire still has 2.1 on certain carriers because it was released on more than one. The Incredible and Evo are phones that got updated very quickly but it's new behavior for HTC and very much not across the entire line of their phones.

HTC is better because you get Cyanogen's mods on it very quickly. Like some others, I'm very happy (for the most part) with the hardware, but upset with Samsung about the speed of updates. Samsung is joing Sony-Ericsson in the list of phone manufacturers I won't nuy from any more. Unless I can get software updates directly from Nexus S. The G2 with worse specs than the Vibrant, runs circles around it.
Obviously all carriers have their own firmware. But Samsung has been **** at getting 2.2 sorted. I honestly don't care, since 2.1 works fine (I'd much rather they junk RFS for etx2, than get some colored icons in the settings menu) - but the principle is that they suck at firmware. Regardless as to the differences the Epic has, it's in the SGS line, and 2.2 dropped a damn year ago - 2.3 is out in the next week, if not Monday.
And it's not like all of the world has 2.2 on their SGS - many places still don't have it.

I also came from G1 ago I understand what your saying. I love the hardware on the Vibrant. It if top of the line quality. The software is where the problem lies. It's just too laggy. I know I can root and get voodoo lag fix, but I rather run stock. I've rooted the Vibrant once (used Axura's latest rom), but rather stock rom although it's much slower.

Samsung Pulls Android 2.2 Update for Vibrant

Just read this on phandroid.com.
Samsung is no longer offering the Froyo update to via Kies (this was only available to Bell customers anyway?)
According to Samsung's facebook page:
"We are continuing to investigate issues that some users have reported while completing the upgrade to Android 2.2. In the interim, we are taking the extra precaution of temporarily suspending the upgrade as a download from Kies. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that clients contact 1-800-751-4078 or [email protected] if they have any further questions."
I think this news means a few things:
1. Since the release in Canada was going to precede the US release, we have a while to wait before any hopes of an official Froyo release for the vibrant.
2. Since Samsung pulled the plug in Canada, it is a safe conclusion that Samsung is responsible for the delay we are experiencing in the USA, not T-Mobile.
3. We should petition T-Mobile to take matters into their own hands because Samsung has failed us. As T-Mobile customers, we deserve to get what we were sold. When we bought our Vibrants, we were sold a smartphone that was capable of being officially updated to Froyo, and within at least a "reasonable" time-frame.
4. In the petition, we should suggest that T-Mobile release a vanilla Froyo or Gingerbread update for our Vibrants, which their engineers could pull-off by adapting the Nexus S rom.
I am setting up the online petition right now. Any suggestions as to details I should include in the petition? I'll post a link when it is ready.
Lol, you're wasting your time.
Sent from my SGS Vibrant.
Samsung software support is losing right now. HTC and Motorola manage to successfully roll out updates across multiple carriers. Samsung can't even manage 1.
This really makes me consider getting a Nexus S.

Well, if there are issues, isn't it good that they're addressing them before wide release? (Better late and grate than early and buggy, right?)
(btw - the rest of yer wish list - "TMO engineers," etc. - is a pipe dream - you're better off asking Santa! )
I don't know we have 2.2 already!?
Isnt it only the Canada versions?
Who really cares anymore? They promised an update months ago. Then kept re promising. Now ginger bread is out and the nexus s. I wouldn't hold my breath.
I assume since your on XDA that your not running stock rom anyways so lets go back to supporting our favorite devs.
Only thing I cant figure out is I with over 4 million galaxys sold why arent there more devs? Not to take away from the great work of the devs on here but it seems like there should be more.

This is just for the Bell version of the Vibrant....?
I have a friend that works for TMo, and she said they got an email saying that the Vibrant was not getting an UPDATE at all. I'll try to get the email...

My 80yr old grandma said the same thing. Weird...
Thank GOD for developers and custom ROMS, 2.2 been there done that, whats next lol?
Rumor Control:
This is in regards to the Canada Bell Vibrant after reports of bricking and data loss

Its good to get your news from multiple sources.
Though I would be curious to know the build number of their 2.2 update, I wouldn't be surprised if it was different from ours, as I'm sure the model number of the Tmo Vibrant is different from theirs, as well as other regional carriers. Remember Kies does things based off of the model number.
unfortunately, your cries fall upon deaf ears..
yeah, samsung software support sucks. the intercept or whatever the crap it is on sprint just got 2.2.
oh well, just do it yourself. it's so easy, and the custom roms are 10x better anyway
but i understand the frustration
Support your own phone then lol. Screw samsung. Let it be your last samsung but don't just let it be broken, fix it. There's ROMS out there that work, and work well. Foyo has been out for the vibrant for what almost 2 months now?
I'm as mad about Samsung's service as the next person but we obviously aren't getting anywhere harrassing them on facebook/twitter or calling support. Like Jae said, it falls on def ears.
SamSUCK
I really can't believe this. This is ****ing ridiculous! I'm mad for you guys. So glad I exchanged my Vibrant for a MyTouch 4G. I can't believe Google would contract a company like SamSUCK to make a dev phone for them. Why couldn't they stick with HTC. They make good solid hardware, they actually support the devices they make.
I fell in love with the Vibrant at first (due to the screen of course) but I just couldn't take the GPS problems, the lag, retarded file system, lack of Froyo, TouchWiz, no front facing camera, no flash, no LED indicator lights, cheap plastic build. I should have known better but I absoutely loved that screen and even my iPhone 4 friends were impressed.
I just couldn't take it anymore. My friend introduced me to this forum, installed ROMs for me which were bug filled, MMS didnt work right on some of them, the pics came in blurry, the GPS was still not good, etc. It was hard for me to do but I took a deep breath and said, F*CK YOU SAMSUCK! Seeing a friends unrooted MT4G getting 1900+ on Quadrant was the last straw. I really tried so hard to like my phone but it was time to give up on SamSUCK. They just don't support their hardware. If you want an Android device, stick with HTC or a phone that runs simply stock. Lesson learned. Samsuck always falls short. Look at the Nexus S. No microSD, no HD recording, no HSPA+. Is this what Google calls revolutionary?? What are you ****ing kidding me?? Typical SamSUCK. HTC would have never done some **** like that. FAIL

[Q] Future of the Streak??

Just wondering what you think the future holds for the Streak or if there will be a future for it especially with AT&T. Will the Streak make it to Android 2.3 or 3.0? Is it considered an HD device? Will there be more accesories for it?
I ask cause I am ready to give up my 3 year old Tilt and the Streak is tops on my list for a new phone. Just wanna have something thats gonna be worth my 2 year contract commitment. Also considering waiting for something new but not sure whats coming out in 2011 for AT&T.
I am wondering the same thing. I have a tilt2 and i need to make a move. Been running xaandroid for the last 4 months ready for an android device. Size and lack of keyboard are holding me back right now.
dual core tegra phones are coming in 2011. If you can wait, and don't mind possibly something smaller (there are rumors of a Streak 2 but nothing even remotely concrete as far as I know) I would wait until summer.
The 2011 CES (Consumer Electronic Show) starts in about a week. I am sure there will be all sorts of announcements from all major vendors, Dell included. So I would look at the prospects then and evaluate the decision. I certainly hope that Streak gets a 2.3 and 3.0 upgrades in the future. Maybe they will just skip 2.3 and go straight to 3.0? Wishful thinking I know
I hope it gets it. It would be a shame if it didn't get it. I just got the streak unlocked. LOL.

Having DJ_Steve around right now at least guarantees 2.3. Hopefully he keeps his Streak around until 3.0 comes out. I worry that once he gets a new and more interesting device, he will stop developing his ROMs.
I almost bought one right after I posted this. A co-worker got the Samsung Epic and it made me jealous as hell. I got a $25 Best Buy gift card and I was gonna use it on the $99 Streak deal that they have. I held out in the end thought.
Froyo reviews says that its even faster with the update.
Streak 2 is 7in so may be a bit to big who knows but the streak will not die as the Medical staff in the USA are getting them and i just read a report that the USA Army are now Testing them
Plus now it has 2.2 on Board it is blowing everything else out of the water in all Tests

I was using the Tilt2, and the Tilt before that. I bought my white streak on Dec 23rd, and there is no way I will ever go back to it. I had been holding back for a phone with a physical keyboard, but also as at least a 4.3" screen on AT&T. Been waiting for 1-1/2 years and decided it was never going to happen. Looking to sell both of them. Can't wait for 2.2..
just add a phisycal keyboard to the streak and it will be the perfect device

buy a blue tooth keyboard wouldnt that work?
i think dell streak is going to last long.
THey have just released it in the asian market. Do u think they are going to stop making more in less than a month of release.
I am also pretty sure that they will release gingerbread for streak.
The support for dell streak from dell is pretty good.
We do have some people in twitter who have helped sort many things out.
1.6 was terrible and dell made a mistake there
Hwowever i am now using stock 2.2 and its almost perfect.
They might take another 6 moths to release gingerbread for att streak but i am sure in another 2-3 months they will release GB for unlocked streak..
Finally to add about new processors.
The more u wait the better it gets. However as a end user i want my phone to be stable and fast. Yes its stable and fast with 2.2 on it. and if i have 2.3 its garunteed tat its going to be faster.
So guys get it if u like the size.....

Unfortunately, I'm not as optimistic.
I'm getting the the HTC Desire HD A9192 (the ATT 3G version). I'll decide which one to keep after a few weeks with it.

I have the US Streak with 1.6. I would be happy if Dell would get off their #$%^&
and get 2.2 out. It is taking them so long that I probably will never buy another Dell Product. I know I can fiddle/faddle with it and get 2.2 from this forum, but I would just rather get the official OTA from Dell/ATT
With a physical keyboard and 2.2 it would be a flippin netbook!
