[Q] Stupid question - which buttons for recovery? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been googling but I can't find it, lol. I know the bootloader is vol up + power, right? Is it home + power like on mt3g?
Sorry for stupid question but none of the update guides mention this, lol.

How do we get into Recovery?

Hey folks. Just bought a MyTouch 4G and I like many aspects about it. However I tried to go into recovery mode to see if it's possible and I can't even get that far. Holding either volume key, or even both simultaneously, and the power button don't do anything for me. Has anyone been successful yet?
Just answered my own question. Looks like I had to disable the "fast boot" option under Settings > Applications. Woohoo!

Nice! hehehe ;-)
if you dont wanna disable fastboot... battery pull.. hold vol down + power and insert battery..
how do i get out of recovery, besides battery pull
vol up + power so you can see the text menu, then scroll (with vol buttons) to reboot and hit power

If you don't want to pull the battery or disable fastboot. Hold power for the options to reboot. Select reboot when you get the wheel, hold vol down and you will go into the recovery/hboot. This is how I did it on my wife's mt4g/hd/whatever..
kinda new to android, but if we have access to recovery, couldnt we use something similar to an update.zip file (like the vibrants) to perm root (if we can find a way to by pass the eMMC write protection)?
Still sorta scared that there will be no root, the device has been out for only a day and we only found a temp root... patience is key

[NICE FIND] A different way to get into Download mode and Recovery menu

Yesterday i bricked my phone about 10-18 times. In the process, all of a sudden my phone would not go into download mode! I started playing around with the buttons. Long story short, THERE IS A DIFFERENT Button COMBINATION TO THE ONE EVERY THREAD TALKS ABOUT... the conventional volume up+volume down+ power button and you hold them for 3-5 seconds and blah blah blah....
Plain and simple, IDK if it works and ALL phones, someone with the newer batch of phones please try this, tried both of these methods after a BATTERY PULL with the phones still turned off!
DOWNLOAD MODE
VOLUME UP+ Power button Takes you straight to download mode!
RECOVERY MODE
VOLUME DOWN+Power button, When the screen comes on, count to 2, let go of the power button but still hold the VOLUME DOWN button until you find yourself in recovery mode.
Im not sure if this is the right section... mods, feel free to move to right section.. im a noob, sorry..
IM PROUD TO SAY THAT AFTER SO MANY BRICKS, I MANAGED TO FINALLY GET MY PHONE TO RUN AT 1.54 GHZ!!!! THIS THING IS A MONSTER!!!! BENCHMARKS OF 2900-3100!!
Apparently you are having gingerbread bootloader. This is already known as mentioned in gb bootloader thread.
ummmmm lol
this has also been known to work with stock as well
good find again there are about 6 ways to get to dl mode
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
sorry couldnt resist, I know your not a noob
I had a hard time getting to download mode before but after reading somewhere on here I learned that this trick always work.
a) take out your battery
b) plug usb in
c) hold both volume up and down
d) put your battery back in while still holding volume up and down
BAM!!! You're in download mode.

Stuck after task 29

hi all,
I was running a miui rom when I messed up with a sd card partition. Magldr was acting funny afterwards so i decided to task 29. After the process completed the phone would always get stuck on the stick together screen. I have tried soft and hard reset but it didn't work.
Here some info on my phone:
Tmous HD2
Radio: 2.15.20.14
Rom: myMIUI 14 B3
HSPL: 2.08
I searched for a solution and this was close: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10644926&postcount=4
But my power button is working fine and so are the volume buttons. I just can't get into the bootloader screen.
Any help is much appreciated.
Tas29 removed magldr. You need to reinstall it. Power off your phone, hold the volume down button and boot up. then reinstall magldr.

Remove battery.
Wait 10 seconds
Replace battery
HOLD VOLUME DOWN BUTTON
while holding volume down button
Press and hold power button
IF above doesnt work (i dont see why not) then you have some other error. My first guess would be volume rocker not working
You don't need to hold power button, it's only the volume down button that triggers the bootloader.

Thanks for the tips, I think my volume down button doesn't work. Before task 29 it would sometimes not work in magldr but it would work fine in recovery.
Should I get it repaired or get a new phone?

Yes it clicks.
Also another observation: when I put the phone to charge, the orange light turns on as usual but I can't turn on the phone. When I unplug it the orange light stays on. It only goes away if i pull the battery.

swipe or double tap to unlock

My power button is starting to fail. What ROM do you recommend that has swipe or double tap to unlock? Also, how is the battery consumption on those?
Any suggestion too in powering the phone without holding the power button? Like say holding the volume button before plugging in the charger would make it boot. Is there anything like that?
I am currently unrooted and using stock (just got updated too). Any thoughts is appreciated.

Mahdi ROM is good, and boot level hardware remapping is almost impossible and would require reconfiguring the wires. Sorry bro

This does not belong in the Development Section, please read the Forum Rules on posting. Thank you and moved here....
I use Hellscore, and it has swipe to lock/unlock. Quite simple to use too. And as for the power-on part, that would require rewiring the phone itself. IMHO it would be cheaper to get the faulty power button itself replaced.

Yea, I would like to have it replaced too but I'm on a long term volunteering work outside my country and I can't leave for the next 9 months, hence the question. I don't trust the courier too so yea.. Anyhow, I remember back in my myTouch 4G days after installing custom recovery it would power on whenever I plug it. It turns out as a bug on the new recovery which was quickly patch on the next version. I never thought I would want a bug on my phone this bad. Haha
Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions!
Just fix the button bro.
if you're here on XDA you probably love your N4, you should fix it, shouldn't be a very expensive fix.

Found something cool

Check this out.. I have never seen this before or found anyone report it or talk about it.
If you, no matter where you are at on your Note 4, even works in Download mode, if you hold down the power button and the volume down button and keep it there, your phone will reboot, keep holding it until you see this new screen I have never seen before.
It's called the Maintenance Boot Menu !!
You can boot into Safe mode and factory reset, etc.. It is Not the recovery menu or obviously download mode..
Cool huh ??
Wonder if there is anything we can gain from this ??
Interesting

Not that I could find. If you hold volume up button, power, and home button it will take you to factory recovery where you can wipe cache.
I also noticed that if you hold the return/back button, you basically get the edge's side curve without the curve xD I'm sure people knew this already, but I found out by accident last night haha
That feature might be bad if the device gets stolen though x:
Edit: is just shortcuts though d:
Safe mode basically disables all installed apps so if you are having a problem you can determine if it something you installed or not.

Hey, that's how we all learn my friend...
I could do it and try to figure it out but to save a needless reboot...I did what's quoted below a couple times to clean the cache. I am wondering what the OP's thing is besides less of what's below? I think I did the OP's thing once when I forgot the home button in the process below and I think all I saw was no clear cache option but most of the rest of what's below.

Had my phone in my pocket pulled it out and I was in this mode. I tried for days to duplicate it and didn't know how haha. Wanted to tell everyone about it
This menu is actually quite cool and fully functional as far as I can see..Hold home button automatically enters recovery TWRP 2.8.4.0.
