Google Maps for Mobile 5.0 - Galaxy Tab General

Heard that Google Maps for Mobile 5.0 will be launched in few days time. However, the supported phone list only include the following
Galaxy S
Droid
Droid X
Droid 2
Droid Incredible
Evo
Nexus S
G2
I wonder if Galaxy Tab is capable of running this since Galaxy S is in the list?

i too have read about this... im sure it will work just fine

The tab is essentially a galaxy S. I don't see why the touch sensor wouldn't allow it to work.
Sent from my galaxy tab

Im not completly sure but I dont think an app is built for a specific device. Thoes are probably the devices that where tested
If not im sure they will release a version that will work with tab.

This uses vectors instead of tiles
Google navigation will not need to drag loads of data down as it goes - theoretically download entire route maps before the journey starts and no need to stay connected to data.
Not the case if you use the street view option, obviously.
The 3d buildings look nice and the 'two finger' look down mode is cool.

The Tab has the horsepower of a Galaxy S -- but it has to push more pixels with it.
So IMHO it's not clear that vector based (= rendered on device) maps will be a sure thing on the Tab...

I think the PowerVR SGX540 will be up to it. It has over 3x the GPU power of a few of those fully supported phones.
We will see in a few days (I hope!).

The update will role out to all devices. Just some devices won't have some of the improved rendering speed-ups. I think the list of devices above were just example devices that would support the improved rendering and was not intended to be an all inclusive list.

This sense of entitlement is why devs are leaving XDA.
There is currently no ICS port. The group working on CM7 will be doing a version for CM9 but as with any version of CM, no etas. Next time use search. If you want ICS badly, you already have it on your captivate.

[opinion]you will never see an official port for ICS from the Atrix, Atrix 2, or any device using the webtop.[/opinion]
In addition, the Atrix 4G has the FP scanner. These two features are going to kill any official support from Motorola. Why?
They are LAZY! The webtop was cobbled together in the first place. This is why the 'the optimus 2x is getting ICS' argument doesn't work in the case of the Atrix. Sure this will leave a bad taste in consumers' mouths, for maybe two seconds until they come out with something new and shiny. Seems people are willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for hardware that isn't even an upgrade, so why bother putting effort into updating software when it isn't profitable?
Its also worth noting that there are some parts of the world where GB isn't even an official release yet! Once they roll out GB in all regions, they will bury support for this phone six feet under, despite the customer objections.
Besides, our clandestine group of developers for the Atrix have pushed out better software than the official Moto devs ever could. You'll see a CM9 port before you even hear an utterance from Motorola to support the Atrix.

Aside from Motorola's track record, I have none. Hence, the several paragraphs explaining my reasoning. The lack of correspondence from Motorola (all I have gotten from them are canned almost political-sounding statements) and the present state of affairs for Atrix support in addition to the points I made previously are why I am extremely skeptical of ICS ever coming to the Atrix officially.
Of course I hope that I will eat my own words some day, like an ice cream sandwich
Edited my previous post to reflect as an opinion article not as fact.

Including the fact that since July, Motorola has released or is about to release the Droid 3, Bionic, RAZR, Droid 4, RAZRMAX, Photon 4G, Triumph, and Atrix 2. Throw on the Cliq 2, Atrix, and Droid X2 from earlier in the year.

Great news! I'm sure none of us will be stupid enough to ask for ETA's!
I'm assuming no HW Acceleration and the good stuff. Have you heard about Nvidia's plans to release ICS drivers and binaries for their Tegra 2 and Tegra 3 line early next year?

How about some Android graphics true facts?
• Android has always used some hardware accelerated drawing. Since before 1.0 all window compositing to the display has been done with hardware.
• This means that many of the animations you see have always been hardware accelerated: menus being shown, sliding the notification shade, transitions between activities, pop-ups and dialogs showing and hiding, etc.
• Android did historically use software to render the contents of each window. For example in a UI like there are four windows: the status bar, the wallpaper, the launcher on top of the wallpaper, and the menu. If one of the windows updates its contents, such as highlighting a menu item, then (prior to 3.0) software is used to draw the new contents of that window; however none of the other windows are redrawn at all, and the re-composition of the windows is done in hardware. Likewise, any movement of the windows such as the menu going up and down is all hardware rendering.
• Looking at drawing inside of a window, you don’t necessarily need to do this in hardware to achieve full 60fps rendering. This depends very much on the number of pixels in your display and the speed of your CPU. For example, Nexus S has no trouble doing 60fps rendering of all the normal stuff you see in the Android UI like scrolling lists on its 800x480 screen. The original Droid however struggled with a similar screen resolution.
• "Full" hardware accelerated drawing within a window was added in Android 3.0. The implementation in Android 4.0 is not any more full than in 3.0. Starting with 3.0, if you set the flag in your app saying that hardware accelerated drawing is allowed, then all drawing to the application’s windows will be done with the GPU. The main change in this regard in Android 4.0 is that now apps that are explicitly targeting 4.0 or higher will have acceleration enabled by default rather than having to put " in their manifest. (And the reason this isn’t just turned on for all existing applications is that some types of drawing operations can’t be supported well in hardware and it also impacts the behavior when an application asks to have a part of its UI updated. Forcing hardware accelerated drawing upon existing apps will break a significant number of them, from subtly to significantly.)
• Hardware accelerated drawing is not all full of win. For example on the PVR drivers of devices like the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus, simply starting to use OpenGL in a process eats about 8MB of RAM. Given that our process overhead is about 2MB, this is pretty huge. That RAM takes away from other things, such as the number of background processes that can be kept running, potentially slowing down things like app switching.
• Because of the overhead of OpenGL, one may very well not want to use it for drawing. For example some of the work we are doing to make Android 4.0 run well on the Nexus S has involved turning off hardware accelerated drawing in parts of the UI so we don’t lose 8MB of RAM in the system process, another 8MB in the phone process, another 8MB in the system UI process, etc. Trust me, you won’t notice -- there is just no benefit on that device in using OpenGL to draw something like the status bar, even with fancy animations going on in there.
• Hardware accelerated drawing is not a magical silver bullet to butter-smooth UI. There are many different efforts that have been going on towards this, such as improved scheduling of foreground vs. background threads in 1.6, rewriting the input system in 2.3, strict mode, concurrent garbage collection, loaders, etc. If you want to achieve 60fps, you have 20 milliseconds to handle each frame. This is not a lot of time. Just touching the flash storage system in the thread that is running the UI can in some cases introduce a delay that puts you out of that timing window, especially if you are writing to storage.
• A recent example of the kinds of interesting things that impact UI smoothness: we noticed that ICS on Nexus S was actually less smooth when scrolling through lists than it was on Gingerbread. It turned out that the reason for this was due to subtle changes in timing, so that sometimes in ICS as the app was retrieving touch events and drawing the screen, it would go to get the next event slightly before it was ready, causing it to visibly miss a frame while tracking the finger even though it was drawing the screen at a solid 60fps.
• When people have historically compared web browser scrolling between Android and iOS, most of the differences they are seeing are not due to hardware accelerated drawing. Originally Android went a different route for its web page rendering and made different compromises: the web page is turned in to a display list, which is continually rendered to the screen, instead of using tiles. This has the benefit that scrolling and zooming never have artifacts of tiles that haven’t yet been drawn. Its downside is that as the graphics on the web page get more complicated to draw the frame rate goes down. As of Android 3.0, the browser now uses tiles, so it can maintain a consistent frame rate as you scroll or zoom, with the negative of having artifacts when newly needed tiles can’t be rendered quickly enough. The tiles themselves are rendered in software, which I believe is the case for iOS as well. (And this tile-based approach could be used prior to 3.0 without hardware accelerated drawing; as mentioned previously, the Nexus S CPU can easily draw the tiles to the window at 60fps.)
• Hardware accleration does not magically make drawing performance problems disappear. There is still a limit to how much the GPU can do. A recent interesting example of this is tablets built with Tegra 2 -- that GPU can touch every pixel of a 1280x800 screen about 2.5 times at 60fps. Now consider the Android 3.0 tablet home screen where you are switching to the all apps list: you need to draw the background (1x all pixels), then the layer of shortcuts and widgets (let’s be nice and say this is .5x all pixels), then the black background of all apps (1x all pixels), and the icons and labels of all apps (.5x all pixels). We’ve already blown our per-pixel budget, and we haven’t even composited the separate windows to the final display yet. To get 60fps animation, Android 3.0 and later use a number of tricks. A big one is that it tries to put all windows into overlays instead of having to copy them to the framebuffer with the GPU. In the case here even with that we are still over-budget, but we have another trick: because the wallpaper on Android is in a separate window, we can make this window larger than the screen to hold the entire bitmap. Now, as you scroll, the movement of the background doesn’t require any drawing, just moving its window... and because this window is in an overlay, it doesn’t even need to be composited to the screen with the GPU.
• As device screen resolution goes up, achieving a 60fps UI is closely related to GPU speed and especially the GPU’s memory bus bandwidth. In fact, if you want to get an idea of the performance of a piece of hardware, always pay close attention to the memory bus bandwidth. There are plenty of times where the CPU (especially with those wonderful NEON instructions) can go a lot faster than the memory bus.
On a side note, the Tegra 2 does not have NEON instructions and only uses single-channel memory, which limits how well GPU acceleration helps with smoothness.
thanks.

Sure would love to see a screenshot or 10. Have seen absolutely zero anywhere else about this happening.
Not saying "prove it" or anything, mind you! Just curious (as is everyone else here).
It's great to know that ATrix CM9 is in the oven. I personally have no doubt that ATRIX will get ICS officially.

Some Observations

Positive:
- Fast, fluid, powerful.
- Multitasking is fantastic because of the additional RAM.
- The browser is as close to desktop performance as I've seen in an Android device
.- It's a new generation of tablet for Samsung, more like a giant SGS3 than an extension of the OG 10.1 or 10.1 2. I just updated my OG Tab 10.1 to ICS before I got the Note and the Note’s version of TW is far more modern with 3D effects on things like the keyboard.
- It has SGS3 features like Awake Stay, AllShare Play, AllShare Cast, BT4.0/aptX, and Buddy Photo.
- The new keyboard is much better laid out and has mini and thumb views. It also floats in mini-mode and has Swype-like capabilities. It’s actually quite usable now.
- The screen is incredibly responsive whether via finger or stylus navigation. Between that and the GPU/CPU speed and additional RAM it's almost an iPad like experience.
- The onboard speakers sound fantastic for a mobile device.
- Video performance is the best I've seen on an Android device.
- It's well built and feels very premium.
Neutral:
- It's not going to win any beauty contests but it's growing on me.
- Samsung's apps and widgets aren't terribly impressive aesthetically. Why does Samsung fell the need to make everything look so cartoonish?
Negative:
- Social Hub has been removed which really doesn't make any sense. I checked the Luxembourg and Netherlands ROMs and its missing from them too. My 3G Note has a TTT (Trinidad) CSC. Some other leisure stuff has been left out too like AP Mobile.
- The S-Pen's in a stupid place. If the Note's in a case or sitting on a stand you can't reach it. Based on the real estate that's probably the only place they could put it. It also feels a little cheap.
- Auto-brightness is way too low; probably to save battery.
- It can't read SDXC memory cards. I had to go through a ton of gymnastics to get it to recognize my SanDisk 64GB card and it's now running FAT. It's a shame Samsung didn't implement exFAT the way they did on the SGS3.
- It’s a shame it doesn’t have an HD display.
I'll post more as I use it for different things.
Questions.....
Light Bleed, especially on boot up?
BlueTooth and wireless - are there any issues with using BT while on wifi?
Are you using the Chrome browser?
Have you tried any games, or netflix. Netflix from what I am hearing is poor on the T700, and games had stuttering issues before our last update.
no bogging down with many widgets running?

Ugh... the lack of exFAT is almost a dealbreaker!! Now I have to really think about if this is worth getting or not (have a Note N7000 right now and really miss having big files on my 64Gb card).
With general usage, how is the performance compared to other Android tablets or iPad?
How good are stock apps like S-Note or the Adobe PS?
Thanks for the observations. Very good points to take into account.
I have a question about multitasking. Is it possible to have floating windows? Are there limitations on what can multitask? For instance, I'm interested to float a video or photo, while having Sketchbook Pro or some other drawing app open to draw on. Is that possible?

None. Samsung's QC on their tablet displays is pretty impressive. The only display complaint was with early versions of the OG 10.1 which would get a moisture circle between the glass and panel from humidity. That was more a design issue than a QC issue. The resolution's the same as the OG 10.1 but looking at them side-by-side the panel itself is definately different. It seems a lot sharper; especially with text.

No, side-by-side only with each app fixed at half the display. Videos in Pop Up Play float and can be moved and resized. Pop Up Play only works with the stock video player.

Ok, I have it since Friday last week and also have a normal 10.1 and can confirm some views but let me add/question others:
First some great differences from normal 10.1:
+ SD card slot (I did not have one before... How did you get 64gb working? I did not so far
+ Infrared port (you can use it as a remote controller for your TV
+ Whatever have been sayd on speed/memory above
+ Some nice configurable enhancement on lockscreen
+ A special menu (or direct app) appears when you pull out the pen
+ You can define the level of auto brightness now! (therefore it's not too dark, just pull the slider and the auto brignes will be affected as well to a higher level )
+ No Social hub (I always reoved this with Titanium because I don't use any of the Samsung hubs)
- The price was heavy (OK, I wanted to get it as one of the first and did not want to wait until I get 20% discount)
- Why not a higher resolution screen?
- The 64GB SD topic
I did not have too much time to test a lot or to install/play a lot of games (use it more for business). Run only Quadrant Pro once and the result was ~6150, about twice than on my 10.1.
Ok, I hope I helped some more with my additional view!
I would like to point a thing about the screen resolution. Exynos 4412 doesn't support Full HD. It supports max WXGA resolution.
Source: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/Exynos/news_12.html
I guess we will have to wait for Exynos 5 series for FHD and WQXGA resolution.

+ !!!! You can use it as a phone, it comes with dialer and works as normal phone like the 7 Tab!!!! Of course, use the earphones if you don't want to use the standard speakerphone setup
+ Another +, it's data speed is much higher than any of my other tablets or my normal Galaxy Note N7000! I get full WIFI speed now (22MB, have DSL with 24MB max...) and 8MB+ on H+. Before I had with Tab 10.1 and Note only around 8MB on Wifi and 3-4MB on H+
Does the stock browser reflow text? Thanks!
I've had one since Friday. Purchased from Negri. It is awesome. The writing is SO fluid - NO lag.
I got my 64 GB card to work by formatting it in my 5" Note. It wouldn't recognize it before but after format in the small Note it recognizes it as 64 GB.
I cannot get BeyondPod to move it's directory to this external card. Does anyone know the path I need to tell BeyondPod to use?

oh snap! microsoft is gonna sue! samsung's promo vid looks so dang much like courier.

i gotta say their demo looks like everything i had hoped ms to come out with. i'm playing with the asus infinity right now but starting to come across the regular QC defects that asus works so hard to maintain.
it's a hard decision -
asus- decent hardware with great aftermarket support
samsung - great quality hardware with sub-par aftermarket support (just getting ics after the JB ships??? tablet support is on different than their phones).
my 1 yr old gt 10.1 has no light bleed, no clicks or creaks and works just as good as day one.
my tf infinity is 4 days old and the bleed has progressively gotten worse and the click on the right side is getting a bit louder. i like it, but i'd hate to have it fall apart on me.
I've had mine for about a week now, and I'm in love with this device. It's by far the best, most responsive Android tablet I've used - and I've used a lot. My GTab 7.7 feels like a juddery mess compared to this thing. I find it very nice to hold, very light, the speakers are fantastic - and FRONT facing (why is this so hard for manufacturers/designers to understand we want them on the front??), battery life is excellent, and the screen, OK it's not HD (and a bit jarring coming from an iPad 3) is still plenty nice, bright and clear.
It's my favourite tablet, possibly ever.
That being said - I've had a few software issues with it.
1) Most serious, but only happened once so far: I brought up the pop-up S Memo from the bottom taskbar, then clicked the fullscreen button to expand to the full S Note application. S Note completely froze, then crashed. Upon relaunch, half of my notes, along with half the demo/tutorial notes were completely missing from the app. NOT good. After messing around with ways to get it back, I discovered through the file browser that all the note files were actually still there. I went into the Application manager in android settings and did a "Clear Data" for S Note. This solved the problem. Upon relaunch, all the notes were back in S Note.
2) In S Planner, there is NO option to create a NEW note in S Note to attach to a task. There is only an option to link an existing note. The original GNote has the option to create a new note.
3) Also in S Planner, one time I selected the option to link a task to a note in S Note, and S Note opened but then completely froze. Force killing S Note did not help. I tried multiple times, and had to restart the whole tablet to be able to use S Note at all.
4) I've been using an Apple (no hissing, please) bluetooth keyboard with the Gnote 10.1. Works fantastic (see, Apple and Samsung really CAN get along ) but I turned the bluetooth off one time to save battery when not using the keyboard. A while later, I tried to turn bluetooth on again. Bluetooth would not turn on. I could not toggle it on or off. I restarted the tablet, and bluetooth came on automatically.
These issues are very annoying, but so far have all happened only once. Hopefully will not be recurring issues, as I plan to make extensive use of S Note and a bluetooth keyboard too.
Other than that, I just LOVE this tablet. Bye bye, iPad 3!

The phone is cool. I would imagine you could easily do hands-free (haven't actually tried it), but the speakers are certainly loud enough for most situations.
BTW, i've never seen a phone this large. I imagine there have been a few, but perhaps not. Anyone?

Multi-window?

10 inch is great for multi-window multitasking especially considering the lack of tablet optimized Android apps. But is it available on the Nexus 10 out of box considering Samsung's own Note 10.1 does split-screen, if not can it be upgraded with no root or in any other way?
Could be a dealbreaker. The 2,56k Nexus 10 is perfect for multitasking and lacking such awesomeness would be disappointing.
Something like Galaxy Note? It would be great but no mention of it in the reviews.

It's unlikely. The thing with nexus devices is that you need to forget who manufactured it.
Unless the standard android build tree implements a multi windows feature, no nexus device will have it.
It's a trade off, because devices like my S3 and the Note etc come with fantastic Samsung features like the notes app, multi window, smart stay, additional code licences and such, but you sacrifice update frequency.
The point here is that this device gets pure, unadulterated, Android, and all the features (or lack thereof) that comes with it.
Either way, ill be buying one, and waiting for ParanoidAndroid to come along so I can get rid of the crappy Phablet UI, which I personally think is a mistake on a device like this.

That's too bad. The crowd clearly wants multitasking and the 10" screen and high resolution is fitting for split screen, a big hit and miss by Google. Or maybe Samsung wants to keep it in house? Disappointing either way, splitting the screen into 4:3 for Chrome and 1:3 for Twitter/chat/music/calculator/notepad etc. would give enough pixels for both. To not have that option on most tablets is kinda shocking. What else do you wish to use the big screen for if not comfort?
I'm on GB on my phone. Is there a simple way to switch between apps on JB?

Yeh, the problem, is that Samsung's multi-window feature is just that, Samsung's. They paid and spent the time to develop it in house, it's their own functionality, it cost them time and effort and is a selling point for their own devices such as the Galaxy Note 2.
As for JB, there is the "recent" menu, which is usually surfaced as an on screen button on some devices, or a press and hold of home on others, for switching apps. It's really no different to that of GB, except that it gives thumbnails of the apps instead of just icons.
Samsung cheated their way to multi-screen view... only one app is in the foreground, so it's not really multi-tasking. They did a serious hack job of the android os in order to make it happen. If you want it done right, wait for Google to do it.

maybe it would be possible to run an app at qhd resolution or so as a widget on your home screen. you could put 2 or 3 on the 10 inch screen and just use them all simultaneously. anyone have any idea?
also, i found this on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOqBAfMwCAc

Yeah, but this is a Samsung tab, and as much as it runs "pure Android", they could've easily throw multi-view in and sell it with that feature, it's pretty evident THIS is the device to challenge the iPad, not the Note 10.1.
It also doesn't take a genius at Google to develop split-screen tasking, don't think it requires too many resources either. HW's ready, SW's ready, we are ready. Where's split screen multitasking on the 10" tablets?

If not multi-window... what apps have big tab widgets to split the screen that way?
Mobo player let's you multi screen, when watching a video you can hit the home button and it will bring you to the desktop but have the video playing in a resizeable box... Was actually really nice ,made me want it on all the apps :'(
Sadly, I don't think Google wants multi window functionality in Android. In general, they seem fine with Android for tablets just being a dumb device for media consumption. I think the tablet UI change is an example of Google dumbing down the UI by wasting screen real estate, etc.
Additionally, A developer from Google threatened CyanogenMod when they showed interest in using and improving a 3rd party's implementation of multi window for ICS. Google is worried that supporting multi window will make it harder on app developers because there would be even more size and layout variations that developers would need to test and support.
I personally think it is very important for Google to support this. Windows 8 tablets already have support for multi window.
Back to my original point, a 7" fits Google's current direction of being mostly a dumb device for media consumption. However, 10" tablets needs to be something more than that to justify the price and lack of portability compared to a 7" tablet.
Damn, the new multi-view looks better than ever!

While I agree i dont like the UI on a nexus 7. For example isnt the native apps on a n7 single pane, like gmail on a phone?
On the nexus 10, gmail, talk, email, and the like are all 2 pane applications. My only complaint about the UI on the N10 is that the home back and multitask buttons allways stay in the middle of the screen. i think they should be to one side or the other for easier access with your thumb.
Also i would love to have multi window support on my n10 which is how i came opon this thread, but i will wait for google to implement it. while the different versions of android (touchwiz motoblur etc.) have come a long way none of them are as smooth or operate as clean as stock android. When and if google creates multi window support it will work flawlessly.

What phone do you use with this tablet?

I was just curious to see peoples' work flow with this tablet. Are a lot of people rocking the note 3 or 4 to have s note and scrapbook sync on both devices? I ask because I was wanting to upgrade my current phone. Typically I go for a near vanilla andriod for my phone like a nexus or moto x, but now that I have this tablet I've been considering one of the notes. Would it be worth it? I see features like handwriting and multiwindows working much better on a 10 or 12 in screen vs a 5.7 in screen, so perhaps this is simply some ocd kicking in on my part.
Note 4. Just because. Lol. I don't use S note , I use papyrus, but they sync nicley
Note 3.
I've never touched S Note or Scrapbook. I use Evernote, Lecturenotes and Sketchbook Pro.
I came from a Nexus 4 and I'm now using a T-Mobile Note 4 on AT&T as my daily driver. Haven't rooted it yet but intend to once I sort out porting over my company phone number to my personal account (in the transition stage from company provided phones to a bring-your-own-mobile program). The Nexus 4 is now just for my work emails.
I've never gotten into S-Note and Scrapbook. I just don't find that I need them for my typical use case but I did play with scrapbook to see if things sync across via Samsung Account and they do. I would imagine S-Note through Evernote would sync too but I don't like jumping through hoops so I don't bother. I use Lecturenotes for all of my note taking now and I sync that to my Dropbox using Dropsync. I'm able to access my notebooks just fine on either device so thats great.
Note Pro has me spoiled when it comes to multiwindow support. IMO its just not very useful on the Note 4. Pop open two windows and then try to use a keyboard and its just a mess LOL . . I guess its fine for watching a video while surfing or something but I don't do that personally so . . meh . .
One thing I can say about the Note 4 is that having one makes me long for an update to S-Pen features on the Note Pro. Smart select and text selection features are fantastic and will make you think "Damn, this is how it should have been all along . . "
xperia z ultra
Can you sync papyrus the same way you can sync lecture notes (dropsync)?
It sounds like a lot of people do have note phones, but that it's strictly for the hardware. That makes sense, it is one of the fastest phones with the best screen year after year. But the software and multiwindow features seem less useful. Do you guys write much on your phones? I've gotten use to and enjoy writing on my tablet, but I think it would be a lot harder to do it on a phone where I wouldn't be able to rest my wrist anywhere.
It sounds like it might be best for me to start using something like lecture notes or papyrus, then load it on to whatever phone I get. That way I could do all my writing on my tablet, but be able to reference my notes from my phone still.
Sidenote, after reading your posts I started messing around with my apps for taking notes. I realized that with air command off, you can draw shapes and clip part of the screen, then share it to any app you wish. I like that a lot more than the scrapbook option through air command.

You probably can but I haven't been successful with it yet. Papyrus saves its data in a secure location that requires root access to get to it but from what I can tell Dropsync can't see it. I haven't spent any time trying to see if Dropsync can access root though . . I'm sure if there are other sync products out there that get root access then one could use that instead. Unfortunately while Papyrus supports Box and Dropbox it's only for file opening or saving type stuff and not for the storage of your entire notebook database. If it did that (allow you to select a path where all Papyrus data would reside in your Dropbox) that would be sweet.

Writing on the phone is challenging, I do it once in a while for quick text messages and whatnot but yeah I agree that without a place to rest my palm on there's no way to do extended writing sessions. Honestly though if I know I'm going to need to take notes in a meeting then my Note Pro comes with me. The Note 4 is more for availability of my stuff when I didn't anticipate the need of the tablet.

You don't have to turn off Air Command to do screen clipping; instead just click and hold the button on the stylus BEFORE you bring it near the screen, then bring the tip to the screen to draw a marquee around what you want to clip, let go of the stylus button once you're done and the selection popup window should appear.

Nexus 9 Alternatives - Your Opinion Matters!

Hi everyone.
I'm very excited for getting a Nexus 9 this year, at this could be my first 4:3 Android device, and I'm generallyinterested in how this device would get incorporated into my everyday life.
However I'm kinda in a struggle to justify the 550$ for the 32GB LTE version (well, that's probably a common thing now) AND considering I'm planning to get the LTE version - I'm kinda worried that this model may not be the quickest one to receive the updates, as is seen with the N7 LTE, which by the way STILL hasn't gotten a 5.0 official ROM, and there's already 5.0.1 out, plus the fact that T-Mobile announced today that it's getting delayed, so basically I might not even be lucky enough to get one before Christmas (as I live outside the US).
All of this has me thinking - are there really good alternatives to Nexus 9 today?
I know there are great tablets such as Tab Pro 10.1 and Tab Pro 12.2, as well as Xperia Tablet Z2 and I think Asus has one or two good 10-inchers out there - all of the listed have failry great specs, have KitKat on board, and pack LTE inside them.
But the Nexus has me in because of the pure AOSP I'n getting with it, along with guaranteed 2 years of updates ahead
So, if you can give - please give me a list of 9-10" tablets that apply to the following requirements:
- Priced about the same as N9 LTE
- Have a 32GB or an SD-card expansion option
- Have the latest version of Android
- Have LTE support
- Have a moderately good development community, at least so the device would have an AOSP build available (such as CyanogenMod, for example)
Thanks in advance!

I forgot to mention that I am currently rocking Nexus 10 and Nexus 7 LTE, and I am looking for a replacement of both of these tablets with one device, that's why I also looked at Nexus 9, and ideally the device should have a big display
Shield Tablet just doesn't cut it for me as the screen is too small + it's not really convenient for productivity usage such as Evernote

If big display is primary concern get the Nexus 9, but make sure you get it from somewhere you can get a replacement easily.
Do note that WiFi version already have unimpressive battery life, wonder how much poorer LTE version will be.
I'd consider an iPad Mini Retina, they're cheap right now, or an iPad Air.

How well did the SD 600 behave its a bit old SoC!!im also looking for a tablet....im pretty consern about the battery life..as a nexus user i don't want to look over and over again about my battery stats..
The SD 600 seems to play very nicely with CM12. I actually bought the locked (but hackable) v500 model and the Google Play Edition is the v510. Both models are good, but the v500 might have a little more international support.

Imho, there isn't another tablet that will rival the n9 when all things are considered. I didn't want to cough up the money as I honestly feel that the n9 is overpriced because of its limited storage, mind you I have the 32gb version. 32gb is really low for a media consumption device so 16gb is simply unacceptable and should be done away with all together. I value my timely updates and I know Google will push out updates for at least the next 2 years, how much is that worth to you? There are only 2 companies I trust with updates, Apple and Google.
Fwiw, I was leaning towards an iPad mini 2 32gb as it cost much less and is a well built product but I don't like how constrictive iOS is, weird because I've loved every Mac I've owned. Apples to oranges I suppose, no pun intended.

Great Info. Thanks
Go with a N9 WiFi-only
My 2 cents: what I've always done is have a WiFi-only tablet, because it's cheaper, and use tethering on my phone whenever I need to connect that tablet to the internet while on the move. Another advantage is that with a WiFi only tablet, your battery life will be much larger (granted, the fact you have to keep your phone in tethering mode drains a bit of battery on the phone, but it's tolerable). Right now I have a Nexus 7 WiFi only and a Nexus 5 LTE, and soon I'm thinking about upgrading to a Nexus 9 WiFi only. That way it won't be terribly expensive (the N9 WiFi 32GB is $479). Oh, and an extra advantage of a WiFi-only tablet: there is no carrier to control if you get or don't get Android system updates

Nexus capacitive buttons are activated more easily, especially when they're a millimeter or two away from the Plex console buttons.
Also, when lollipop lags they go down with the ship.
Also, they take extra effort to retrieve when in full screen mode.
Also, they always cut into screen real estate (e.g. Hangouts now has 4 total toolbars on its main window, counting buttons, notification shade, tabs, and user slide out menu and call tab shortcut). This isn't a huge deal in portrait mode but it can certainly become one in landscape. When you're trying to play a game or... See first point.
I think the best competitor is the iPad Mini.
They're both running allegedly laggy 64 bit dual core processors. Either way, seems about even.
They're both touted as top of the line by their respective ecosystem owning companies.
They have identical aspect ratios and screen resolutions.
They both underwent a significant visual overhaul.
The iPad will actually net you 64gb for $500, where Google makes only a 32gb version of the Nexus 9 for a relatively outrageous $480.
Apple has famous customer service and kiosks. Google might call you if they feel like it.
iOS has App Ops built in. It lets you control your privacy with things like location. Android has Google Play Services. It never stops checking your location.
Both let you turn off background data.
Both support external storage if it's inconveniently attached with a cable or something.
Both support third party keyboards.
Both have silly slider-button combination quick toggles. Android's has more options and iOS' only needs a single swipe with a single finger to appear.
Both have an app switching screen that now shows you very few apps* unless you start sliding around.
Neither let you access your apps' Settings pages from the notification bar* .
* these features were removed in Lollipop to make comparisons to iOS devices more fitting.

Most of the Nexus is also locked down out of the box. I've found myself tethered to the Google Play Services app in ways that can only be described as unhealthy, even as yesterday that app needed a complete deletion to stop searching for my location via GPS. and
And I'm not a huge Google's fan to begin with. It'd be an interesting experiment to test ecosystem reliance.
As for $20 limited movie licenses on both ecosystems, I'm thrilled about neither, but in my experience each company is trying somewhat desperately to imitate the other despite still being very different. That alone I think makes looking at the iPad worth a moment.
