[Q] Downgrading to a rooted G1 from a Legend? - G1 General

Alright. I used to own a white G1 and at the time 1.6 was lovely and awesome, everything I need. Since then I've had a Hero, which I bricked trying to upgrade. I've been using the HTC Legend since I got in on a contract, and I love it. Lately the battery has gone. Bought new ones and charged them "properly" etc. and they didn't work. I'm getting tempted to factory reset it since all it does is freeze up / run slowly. Money is becoming an issue for at the moment, which is why I'm looking at ebay at rooted G1's again.
I loved the QWERTY on the G1 and the battery life was fine to be honest, about the same as my Legend at first (a day and a halfish). I've seen many ebay sellers exploiting 2.2 as a good selling point, but I know most ROMs have their flaws. Most people use Cyanogen mod whatever. I realise I'll lose some RAM/Processing power/camera+flash etc. on the G1, but I can live with that if it was worth downgrading to a G1 with a "stable" rom on it.
Verdicts? Should I risk a downgrade? I'll get money out of it for sure, selling the legend in exchange. I'll reset it before I do, if I do. Which would probably solve the issues, but it's annoying me right now.. It's either that or an iPhone 2/3G because they seem to be more stable... Android has slowed down / frozen up on me and needed a reset after awhile...

I actually went back down to the G1 last month after upgrading to the g2 based on the fact that I thought it wasn't going to get rooted, and its reception issues.
I love the g1. It's my favorite that I've ever had in my entire life, and I've had my share of phones. I came back to it because I loved the qwerty, and how donut will keep me stay minimal and simple. I don't run a lot of apps, and currently on SuperD waiting for the newest update.
If you're going to get money out of this, definitely go back to the g1. There are still some devs out there supporting this phone.
And then save up and buy the g2.

I 2 have & luv my G1. I also have the G2 but I'm not going to root it like I've done my G1. Even though I have the new phone, I can't let go of my first luv.lol

Need some G1 motivation!

Hey guys i need some motivation here.
Im really starting to hate my G1, there really is nothing wrong with it, i just feel like im living in the stone age. Im stuck running 1.6 roms in general because they are the only ones that seem to work 100% and are actually fast and meet my standards.
However these days 1.6 is ancient technology, and the G1 cant seem to handle any improvement, anytime i try an eclair rom its slow as hell and has the lack of drivers so its all hackjobs trying to get everything to work right, the hardware is EXTREMELY outdated, even though its only a year+ old things have progressed massively since then.
It wouldnt suprise me if they discontinue the G1 in favor of the new Mytouch Slide as that would seem to be the natural progression of things, so then i was looking the other day at Verizon and here they are with the Droid Incredible with a spec sheet made of gold
Why should i keep my G1, honestly? Its crippled to 1.6 based roms if you want 100% full functionality, and if you want anything more then that you rely on hackjobs to get everything running right and sacrifice a good amount of speed, when you can just go buy a new phone that comes 100% out of the box with a 2.1 rom and it will run it great all day long with no issues and everything working.
What happens after 2.1? What happens when 2.2 or 2.4 or whatever comes after that?? Our G1s can barely handle 2.01 much less anything that may come after eclair, im just looking at my G1 like an ancient relic with outdated hardware and need some advice, to keep or to leave.
The G1 is an older phone with hardware that was decent when it was released, but has been surpassed by newer technology. That's all there is to it. It's still a good, fun phone.
You have to think of it as you think of any other technology though. Buy a high end computer and in a year it's equivalent to the lowest of the low. If you bought a Mustang GT a year ago, you'd probably be disappointed to see that it's similar to the new V6 Mustang's. The same goes with ALL phones. You should be glad that the phone's still getting love from developers and nearly all apps and games are compatible with it.
I don't need 2.0/2.1 or any future updates to keep me content with the phone. If I start hating it or feel an extreme need for something better by the time my upgrade comes around, I'm most likely going for another Android device. Maybe you should too if you're just not feeling the G1 anymore.
Super D is the fastest ROM I've used on the G1, by far. it's fast enough for my uses. If it's too slow for you, you need to upgrade. Me, I'm sticking with the G1 for a while, because the Nexus is too expensive, and nothing else appeals to me. Except an iPhone running Android ... but that one's still in progress ...
cyan has a 2.1 rom with hardware acceleration just around the corner. how does multiple google accounts, live wallpapers, fully working drivers and the usual cyan tweaks sound?

He mentioned it on twitter...
If all you want is a fast, mainstream phone ... get an iphone. The G1 is pure freedom from all the BS youll deal with using something else.
If you're at the point where you need someone else to convince you to stick with the G1, well, i think you have your answer already.
meh.
I have a G1 with a 1.6 rom that has Eclair bits in it. Maybe that's how you need to look at it: what parts of 2.1 is really important for you? Multitouch on browser, maps? Plenty of 1.6 roms have it. I personally have no problems staying with 1.6 since all the necessary items from 2.1 is already ported to the rom, so I'm not really missing out on all the good stuff.
The CSDI roms in all honesty have been very fast and stable. I know I'll keep my G1 for at least another year until Tmo gets some decent phones (N1 is nice, but I'm holding out.) When 2.2 comes out I'm sure the devs will port bits and pieces to the G1 and keeps us G1 owners happy.
If you're truly not liking it anymore, then I would go and get a different phone. There's nothing wrong with that.
You should keep the G1 because it is honestly the best overall device that I have used that has a keyboard. I switched from the G1 to the N1 and then to a BlackBerry because I realized how much I needed a keyboard for typing emails and whatnot. The G1 seems to offer everything that I wanted: Android, keyboard, touchscreen, and most of all, customization. The only major downside to the G1 for me was the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack. I would say the successor to the G1 would be the Droid, but it's not a GSM phone so I can't really use it.

I know... but last I checked the Milestone doesn't work on 3G for my carrier, but I'm not sure on that.

Has anyone noticed lately that the G1 section has been moving quite slow?

It seems as though the most hackable phone, the Grandfather of Android has been lacking much attention, I think all the developers have left us! The forums have not had any new ROMs or tiny hacks .
I think it is time to let the G1 and all the other 1.6 or below Android phones lay to rest... (the dump!)
The lack of anything besides Vanilla 2.X roms here lately is a sign of the G1's retirement setting in fully. We all knew this was coming. As soon as they said 2.X would never be given to non rooted users, it was a big blow dealt. Now that we hardly see any new roms and the recent news of the G1 Blaze being very near to release, I think people are just waiting for the right upgrade to come along. Then the G1 will go to the great phone graveyard.

Yeah, ditto, I've noticed the same thing for months now. We G1 users have not been forgotten though, we still have lots of developers who are still working hard for us. I mean, remember a few months ago when we didn't even have fully working eclair roms? Each of which had different broken features, back when OE, CE, and kings AOSP were the best 2.1 roms yet they all lacked camcorder, 3D, etc. Now we have fully functional hardware on froyo roms, We can load custom boot partitions, we can OC way past 528 Mhz, etc.
I have a few ideas to try to implement myself, but I am definately still learning. I just recently installed ubuntu on my main computer (windows sucks lol) and I'm working on building from CM source. Some of my (and other people's) ideas include a reverse ram hack and an OC OV kernel to overclock higher. Wish me luck
Besides, try not to thing about it as how much we have left, but how far we've come. (lol I linked to a song by the same name... listen to it the lyrics are powerful)
Yea. I own a g1 and a mytouch 3g both 32b.. i think i installed mostly every rom for the g1.. now rooting just got boring w. The g1.. i love the phone nd all.. i just dont want to see it go.. after every hack that came out for it.. i have to wait 2 year to get a new android device.. but i kno my g1 will hold up.. still best keyboard/touch screen phone too me..

Yeah I said that this was going to happen back in February when the MyTouch LE and Nexus were coming out. Nobody believed me and in fact I was getting hate mail because of it. Some people were so persistent that the G1 was still going to be developed on for years to come because they had some older WinMo phones that were still being kept up to date. My argument is that Android is growing much faster than WinMo system and has become increasingly popular. To be honest I was caught a little off guard by the MyTouch 1.2/LE devices being outdated so quickly but again, it only backed up my theory that the G1 and MyTouch devices would be obsolete by years end. Most devices out there are made to support the future of Android. Some are even rumored to be dual processor! There would be no way that roms or even apps that can run on 1ghz dual processor devices with 16gb of internal storage can compete with the devices that ran RC-17, RC-19, RC-30, RC-33, etc. A year from now people will be looking at the G1 in awe that we've come so far with Android and more devices will be released. Devices with much better specifications and that can receive upgrades for a least a couple years to come. It pains me to say that HTC wasn't thinking very far ahead when they released the Dream with such limitations but who would have thought that we would have Android systems like Eclair, Froyo or Gingerbread? Hell, I remember back when you couldn't even have widgets on your Android homescreen other than the clock. Now look at your screen. That wasn't too long ago either.

Bam, You nailed.. it!
I saw it. I knew this hardware was going to be outdated very quickly. That's the number one thing that drives me to a phone is hardware, and G1 never had enough. MT3G caught my attention, and now I feel buyers remorse for buying so early. Damn good phone, but now its nothing compared to anything else.

All the original MyTouch was a G1 without a keyboard unless you happen to have a 32a device. The 1.2 was a nice step up, but quickly outdated.
I still believe the G1 could stick around in my household for a year or two more as a VOIP/PMP/HTPC remote. but not as a daily phone, let alone one I'd be willing to pay for service on.
Wish I could be bothered to put together a linux box and learn how to make a ROM/kernel with telephone services completely disabled...find out whether or not the wifis are tied to the celluar radio(ie can we free up 92 mb of RAM if we don't need that cell radio active and still keep wifi enabled/gps enabled(i know no to aGPS))...if any of this sounds strange, its 0545 and i'm tired.

So basically you want your G1 phone for strictly a linux based computer system and not for a phone at all, that about it?

Im going to jump in and say YES! Why? Because I am deaf (read hearing impaired, profoundly deaf -- dont call me, nobody will answer, I cant hear you")
I got my first Dream in November 2009. It was because I was sick of the Sidekick and its baked-ness.
December 2009, I rooted the G1 because I quickly got sucked into the rooting forums and wanted to see what it could do.
I have been trying to figure out how to run this phone without phone.apk com.android.phone and Dialer. Its impossible since the telephony part is still tied into the SMS/MMS portions.
My point is...... the telephone part for a hearing user must use about...... say 1GHZ of space. What can this Dream do without all that phone?
I now own 6 Dreams, (1 bought, 5 rescued from the graveyard, all are working beautifully and I have big hopes for them one day) This is not just a phone. Its a beautiful piece of clocked machinery. I believe I will use a G1 until the day I die which will be within 6 decades.
So, instead of sending the G1's to the graveyard how about it

No, I want it to run Android(yes, i know its a linux kernel). I want it to play media, navigate/have maps on sd card so i can replace a standalone gps on long trips, I want it utilize any and all apps that it can, games too. And I want it to do all this w/o the telephone parts taking up precious space. I can put google voice/sipdroid on it for voip capabilities.
yeah. I also want to know if the 64 mb of ram that would be wasted on the baseband radio can be recovered.
I would never give up my G1 even though I said that in the first post but... the G1 is just to amazing to me. The current G1 I own has a screen cable issue so the screen constantly turns black when ever you touch the bottom certainly, now I have to use a P.O.S. Sidekick LX 2007 Brown temporarily until Project Emerald or the G1 Blaze. If I could fix the cable I would gladly use this G1 until it dies before I replace it.
Or you could buy a used g1 on craigslist for 75 bucks. hell, if you got friends with android that have upgraded you might be able to score a free one.
I still use my G1... but i've had some hard times with it in the past... First time rooting I had a problem with the SPL and bricked the phone, it would stay on the G1 screen and not let me do anything else. So, I called Tmo and told them my phone stopped working so they sent me a new one and I returned the bricked one. Got lucky with that. cracked my digitizer once replaced that one from a friends G1 which became a part out. Gonna need to replace the menu button above the trackball later today, something is really wrong with it. Replaced the motherboard because the wifi stopped working never found out how to fix that... Then the HD2 was released... didn't know about it till 2 months later when I started seeing commercials for it so I picked one of those up. wondered what the 1ghz processor was like and HTC sense, this was all before they started putting Android on the HD2's. Just after 2 weeks of owning the phone I leave it on my windshield after a few hours of working on my car and take the car out for a test drive... all the while forgetting my phone... Cracked the screen and made a few scratches on the case but was still fully operational. Few more weeks later and I forget my phone on the roof of my car this time, and am driving about 70mph and hear a thunk and a thud and was asking myself wtf was that?... then I realized I don't have my phone in my lap and I started shaking and freak out a little bit and desperatly try to find it. Luckly I do... however this time I wasn't so lucky. Digitizer is not responsive and since it doesn't have a trackball the phone becomes totally useless. Slide my SIM card in my G1 once again and have been using it for awhile (I took my G1 everywhere my car would go just in case I had some bad luck or needed to use an app off of it.) I'm impressed with the speed of the G1, yes its already outdated but look its running Froyo and to me I figured it would be like putting windows 7 on a computer made in the 90's, but its nothing like that at all, its running it just fine, and sure its not as fast as the EVO 4 but its working good enough to be functional for a daily use phone and show off to my friend who just bought the vibrant and is anticipating the september OTA update to Froyo he was a little upset/jealous that I got it on my phone, and to be honest I had a big smirk on my face when I showed him everything it has.
Boring story I know... haha!

HAHAHA nice I need to try that with some people. Hopefully some Dev's can get Gingerbread on the G1 and then I can make my friend more jealous because he'll probably have to wait till next year to get it on his phone.
It feels so good to have this G1. A device with out dated specs, but with capabilty of anything out there. Hmmmmm maybe if we just swap in a gpu.... we should build G1s.. just like they build computers

Possibly going back to HD2

Right now I have a Samsung Vibrant. Back when the HD2 came out I bought one, hoping that a solid Android ROM would come out. But after a while, I got sick of laggy WinMo and I sold the HD2 and went back to a G1 for a while 'til the Vibrant came out. However, I really miss the form factor of the HD2 (Even though Super AMOLED is aaawesome). The sturdy metal body and big screen were great. Of course, after I sell it, Android ROMs start popping up. So Now, I'm considering going back to an HD2. But before I do this, I was hoping I could get some feed back on the quality of the ROMs out there. Are the latest Froyo ones fully functional or are there still things that don't work in them? Also, is rooting a WinMo phone different from rooting an Android phone, or does it even need to be rooted at all?

There are still a few bugs to ring out but for the most part its fully functional, the only problem im still dealing with are freezes, which dont come around too often. The way progress is coming along it wont be long at all till its perfected (hopefully with functional recovery in the future). As for your question about if windows is alike android in rooting, not at all. Its MUCH easier.

Let’s count Bravo users on XDA.

I’ll be first
Look's like there is only few people who own this phone, but some threads have 1000+ views, so I wanna know how many off us is waiting for update (or Roms, or sbf to unbrick theirs phones )
Check the other threads, several so far, trying to keep from bricking this one because as soon as my daughter gets to upgrade her phone for free I am giving her this Bravo and I will get something better to play with.
The Bravo platform is a nice phone for your kid, maybe you wife, unless she too is adventurous, but certainly it's not for those who want to mod.
I'm not able to upgrade for a few months but love the bravo. its my first android so prefect but I am not new to modding. really big into jailbreaking and modding iphone and recently my ps3a well but would love to mod the bravo and try new roms. got it rooted debloated and over clocked but it is never enough, right. lol going to keep holding out for an update and for people smarter than me to deliver the tools that will enable us to do so.
I don't have one but my Son does. And I am the guy that roots and enables the goodies on the phones, so I think I count.
I just bought a Bravo and I'm excited to start modifications.
This is my first Android, I've spent a lot of time with WinMo.
I am waiting for 2.2 indeed.
For the madness to begin!
lol
Had mine for a month and love it. Only downside it the camera, but that's why I have a canon. Just saw on the Motorola support forum that they are getting voluteers to test 2.2 before they roll it out.
I AM WAITING FOR 2.2. It's so annoying not being able to do anything with this phone.
I use a Bravo. I want 2.2. Mostly just for flash.
I bought a Bravo, and i stayed exciting when i saw that it has similiar hardware that the Defy.
I hope that came one Good ROM for Bravo like i am seeing ROM's for Defy
I had an iphone 3g for a while, modded the bajesus out of it...fell out of the car one night when my girlfriend wanted to make a late night walmart run...then used my cingular 8125 till I finally broke down and got my bravo in an at&t store....i like it so far...just want to upgrade!!

I love the Bravo; it's an overlooked awesome phone. Here is some inside info Motorola and AT&T had to drop the Bravo from marketing because of conflicts with other phones with lesser power and features and the iPhone 4 had just dropped. The Bravo is no iPhone 4 but it is better than a 3GS and all around it was a better deal, I got mine for free. There are a couple of hardware guys at work that have modified the back of the phone to hold 4 32 GB MicroSD (128 GB) cards crazy! They keep tons of music and movies on the phones. It's a pretty cool setup and should be out soon for the Bravo and the Atrix and other phones. Even a micro SSD 300GB backing for the 4 core Nvidia Phone.
The Future is Bright for the Bravo and Motorola.
Aight...
Okay, so 2.2.1 just got pushed to Bravo. I know Bandroidx is throwing one down. Pretty stoked on this development. Can't wait to see what ya' got Bando!!!
Have one. It's a great little phone!
I've got one, my first smart phone, finally brokedown and replaced my Plam TX
i own a bravo too.
its compact, nice little phone. not too big, not too small. just about right. one major thing i hate about bravo is the atypical shape. :?
I've had my bravo since january. Couldn't stand using my old iPhone 3G anymore. Finally got my phone rooted, overclocked, and rommed two weeks ago. Loving the phone even though I've been having a fair bit of lag if I don't restart my phone once/twice daily, which didn't start at all until after the 2.2 update.

Loving the phone even though I've been having a fair bit of lag if I don't restart my phone once/twice daily, which didn't start at all until after the 2.2 update.

1-2 times a day? Damn. I usually don't have to reboot unless I do something that requires it, but I usually reboot every few days just to keep the phone running fast and smooth.

Same here, I used to reboot nightly, but now I'm doing it every three nights or so. I also don't really notice much difference between pre-reboot and post-reboot.

[Q] To buy or not to buy a new G1

Hello everyone!
I'm considering buying a new Android phone. I've got a HTC Tatoo (Click) now, but i want a new phone. I can buy this phone for €100 but i don't know if this is a good idea.
I really like the G1, but it's an old phone and there are better alternatives. For €150 i can buy the ZTE Blade (Orange San Fransisco).
But i like the design and the keyboard of the G1.
What would you guys do?
Get the blade. G1 is way too slow. I used the G1 for a long time but it got way to slow to do anything.
get the zte blade if it in your budget range as i agree that the g1 to slow now it was great back in it prime and will always be remembered.
Shoot for the G1
I'd honestly go for the G1/HTC Dream. If you put either Ginger Yoshi, or Froyo by Lazlo it will go beyound fast with the new Kernal.
I have got a G1 and a SGS.
The G1 could be an amazing phone, there are only 2 big problems:
1) is big -it's why I bought the sgs-
2) battery issues -but on every android device you have it, don't you?-
so you have to think if a big phone could be good for you, but with a big phone comes big, wonderful keyboard! I really miss it on my Samsung galaxy s!
I would recommend G1 still. It is handy phone to have.
Yea! Some might say it's too big, too slow, etc... But over all G1 has proven to out perform it's capacity (for me anyway) with the custom ROM out there
From my experience with the SuperAosp ROM, my G1 running as fast or better than when I first got it pass on to me.
g1!
I've had my g1 since it came out. I'm running Froyo 2.3 on it. I've had the opportunity to buy other devices, but i stuck with the phone because of the Dev support (not as much anymore) and the big roomy keyboard. I was gonna get the g2, but it was too flimsy and didn't have a dedicated number keyboard.
However I hate it when people mistake it for a sidekick
I'd go g1. ROOMY KEYBOARD
Although i mostly use a Nexus S now, i still have a G1. The keyboard is just great and it is still a great phone. I guess it really depends waht you want to do with it. I run CyanogenMod on it and it is snappy and responsive. And above all - it's legend
my friend has it. And with CM it can actually be a pretty good and fast phone
so id say yes
It is a great device to hack
You should get it.
if you are looking for a decent g1, head to swappa here http://swappa.com/devices/all and look for g1. the lowest price available now is 75 USD, which is a bargain
but just a heads up, g1 have a really small ram, even with 2708+ and cc turned on.
