Hi,
The last two phones I had have both been Blackberry's.
I tried an iPhone recently (1 week) and just found myself pausing to do things that I would do on the blackberry very quickly.
It was almost like I had to completely stop what I was doing and give all my attention
and thought to navigating my way around the iphone, where as with the bb, I seem
to be able to do many tasks with one hand and dont have to think about the task
too much.
I'm wondering if I switch to a G1 how will I go on. Will I find myself waiting for the OS to catch up, continually opening the keyboard to do simple tasks etc?
I like the idea of placing shortcuts on the home screen to dial numbers etc, are there other shortcuts like this?
One task I find myself doing on the bb a lot is taking a quick photo and sending it to a single email address. (the same address every time).
Would this be possible on the G1?
I press the side camera button which opens the camera app,
take the photo by pressing the trackball,
move the trackball to the right and press once.
This gives me the sharing options, "send as email" is the top one.
Click the trackball which adds the photo as an attachment,
type my two letter alias in the To field,
scroll to the subject, type something.
Click the trackball once more and press send.
It sounds a lot when you read it but its pretty quick and simple. Any way of doing this without opening the keyboard?
Thanks
Mike
The camera after taking a pic will offer 4 options, Save/Set As/Share/Delete.
With SnapShotPro you get these options, Save/Delete/Share/Edit.
Touch Share and it will give you a list of options....Gmail/Email/MMS/Myspace/Picsay...the more apps that are able to use your camera the more options...
You only need to open the keyboard to start typing the contact and it will autofind the name for you. But you will still need to open it since there isnt a onscreen keyboard for it yet.
I love snapphoto.. but jesus it's slow to save a photo.

The biggest hindrance to super quick operations on the G1 is the lack of on screen keyboard. Without one you'll be much happier on a BB.
hopefully we will get an on screen kb soon. Perhaps with cupcake or it ported over from another phone. It would be so useful for small simple tasks like thsi

I'm being drawn to the G1, an on screen keyboard for occasional use will be very nice.
I'm not keen on the G2 as this will only have an on screen keyboard so it seems?
IMO the real problem is developers making user workflows that require using a keyboard. In many cases I feel that if an app is written properly the need for a keyboard (flip-out or onscreen) should be minimized unless you're doing heavy data entry. As the apps get better over time it's my hope this situation will improve.
I thought this topic might have ever been discussed before.
However, I tried to search the solution in the site but none of any i found. Prob I missed something.
I was tring to override the home button event. What I intended to do is to block the home button event(return back to the main page of default Android) and run my launcher home instead.
For example, if you wanna do the button test application on any android based device, home button needs to be handled.
Eventhough Android official website has announced that the developer is unable to override home button event, I still notice that some developers has completed this activity.
What I found so far is some developers add
<meta-data android:name="android.dock_home" android:value="true"/>
this line into their Androidmanifest and they say that's all they did for blocking the original home page.
I did the same procedure, however, it did not work well on my side.
Probably some of you have the experience on hadling this matter. Please share your experience so that I can follow up to get this issue done.
Any reply is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
There is an app that remaps keys. perhaps you can take a look at it? You can find it on a post on the desire oxygen rom.
Xda app
You cant override the home button, but you can establish yourself as a replacement for the launcher. If you do that, the user will be prompted with a list of apps that can act as the launcher when they press home
I am trying to remove the 'exit' prompt when hitting the back key. The FAQ at their website says go to Menu/More/Settings to turn off the prompt. Problem is that I can't find Menu/More/Settings. Where is it?
Hit the system menu button at the bottom left of the screen. Go into settings (you might not have to hit "More"), change settings.
Entropy,
Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry for being so slow but I do not see any menu button at the bottom left of the screen. When I bring up the Dolphin browser I have a left arrow for back, a up arrow that brings up the tablet home page, a layered rectangle that brings up a graphical column that has My Apps, Team Stream, Gmail, Google Search, and Settings.
If I hit Settings I do not get a "More". The last icon at the lower left, a rectangle grid brings up the a bottom six options; refresh, bookmarks, toolbar, forward, exit, and uh-oh "more". Oops! There it is. Found exit settings and fixed the problem. Thank you very much.
lmao!
Glad you got it! Totally got a chuckle out of that stream of consciousness style there lol
Where is the Thanks button?
Get the dolphine browser for tablets.
Good luck

Below each post - if you don't see it you need to hit the user cp and change your theme, I think
Brilliant, so goodto know there is at least one other person out there that is as slow as me at spotting the obvious. Now if I can just find someone with the inability to saty polite when drunk then I've had a good day.

I tried dolphin for tablets but it was blurry. It didn't look good. I looked through the options to see if there was a way to fix it but I couldn't find anything.

Hello to everyone,
first of all sorry if this thread is posted in wrong theme.. I want to know how to download files for example from mail etc. in .doc, .xls in Dolphin Browser HD..I have used Opera and it downloads everything, but Dolphin looks much better so I want to know is there solution? Some people told me to download app Download All Files from Market but it doesn't help me.Is there any other solution?
Thank you
Hey Gmfeny, did you get you random wifi disconnects sorted... I read that you used the wifi analyzer (where did you find that..?) and then at your womans pad, it started working. What is the latest. Later on.
Devoting a soft key exclusively to recent apps seems ridiculous to me. Is it a Motoblur thing or stock ICS?
Is there an app that will allow an unrooted user to program a shortcut to the key that is of some use? Maybe on long press?
I installed Google Launcher and noticed that accidentally hitting that key shows recent apps but then takes you out of Go Launcher and back to Motoblur. Any way to avoid that?
That's pure ICS, not Moto. Actually was there in honeycomb too. I never understood removing the search key and menu key to put in the far less used recent apps. If there is a mod out there to convert it's function to a menu button I'd be on it too.

Any shortcut would be preferable. I thought it would be a nice button to open phone dialer or dolphin browser.
I'm really surprised you guys don't find it useful. There's plenty of times where I'd rather have that button than hit the home button and go back to the home screen or hold the home button for a second or more to get that popup on my Nexus S.
I find that I'm swapping back between texting, web browsing, the music player / pandora and facebook quite often

Thank you, I agree as well. Not to mention, the menu and search are legacy buttons. People need to let them die and embrace the design direction Android is moving forward in...but I guess old habits die hard (and painfully). Why so much resistance towards the death of the menu button?

Yeah, I can definitely do without the menu button since every new app has been building it into the application. It's a button that I'd hardly hit while interacting with most applications.
I do miss the contextual search though. I got used to tapping the search button in Contacts or Chrome and searching within that context. Only searching globally when I was at the home screen. Well now with the changes (at least to the Nexus S) the search button brings up Google Now and there's no in-app search unless they specifically build in a button. Most have done that now, so it's not really a problem, just a habit that I got into.
I understand it's benefits but those apps I use quite often you speak of are already shortcuts on my home page. Using the recent apps button adds another key press to open it. I've only used it when I can't remember the name of an app I recently installed.
For me personally, useable? Yes. Useful? Not really. Especially when it gets bogged down with tons of recent apps and my finger already knows where the shortcuts are.

Hey look I'm the OP and said nothing about making it a menu button. What I want is a programmable button to do what I want and you could have one to do what YOU want. Now you tell me NOOOO.., I should embrace the direction of Android. That sounds suspiciously like Apple philosophy.
I never have had any use for a recent apps button and still don't. I don't care what apps I have used recently. Since there is a key there I would like it to be useful. Personally, I would like short press to be Opera and long press to be Dolphin. Now shall I look forward to be scolded for not embracing Chrome? I thought the whole point of Android was personal choice. Android users don't have to be sheeple imo.

You've got to admit though that closing applications by swiping them "off" at that quick switch menu is kind of nice. I like that a little bit better for closing off high RAM applications quickly compared to the CM method of holding "back". Then again, I'll admit it's a very rare thing where I want to kill more than one application at once haha
Sorry, no I don't admit it. (not for me anyway) Never have done it. Never will. I prefer not to force close apps. I let Android handle it.
Dolphin and Opera are in a folder on my desktop so it takes two keypresses to access them while that utterly useless recent apps key sits there doing nothing. In fact it does harm if I am using another launcher and hit it by accident.
There was an app I used to use that allowed you to program the search key (which I also never used) and double tap of home key (which normally produced something else I never used). I think it is called Home to Shortcut. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated to use the recent apps key.
I also think Moto should have made the navigation bar transparent so we could see the entire screen like Nexus. I hope somebody figures out a way to do that too.
Give it time for custom roms and you will be able to do loads of stuff with that bar, including changing the icons and uses. Aokp is great for that.

I don't think swiping from the recent apps menu is an FC function. Just a history. To check it I FC'd a bunch of stuff from the proper menu and opened the recent apps. Sure enough everything is still there. Clicked on one of the apps and sure enough it had to start up.
I generally don't use app killers but there are always rogue apps that will give you problems. Netflix is a bad one for me where I'll watch an episode and when it's over Netflix develops Alzheimer's whether there are more episodes. Does the same on the Roku and tablet so I'm sure it's a Netflix thing. The only way to slap sense into their servers is an FC and restart.

I can't wait. I was spoiled by the super developers for Tbolt.
A bit disappointed with my new M9 and sense 7.. no menu button, no messaging widget, and the email widget only displays gmail as the primary account.. indeed, the majority of widgets are google this and google that
menu button is a samsung only....nexus use it in-app since ice cream sandwich, and htc is just following mother-google
for widgets I don't know, android is so capable, be creative
if the discussion is "sense is no more what we knew in sense 2 or 3" you are probabily right, but market has changed, needs are different, and google itself is asking for stocker android

Hm.. seem to remember a menu button on old Desires..
I suppose it's the omnipotence of google that really bugs me, they have no vested interest in stock sms and other email providers so they deny us the option of easy access and usability for both.. good for the creativity I guess

yeah, in fact last phone with menu button was sensation, born with gingerbread. after htc one x (ICS) the menu has been ditched....
I really don't miss it, in-app menu is fine, more intuitive, just think at all the people with samsung device that doesn't use it at all, because they don't know it's a menu button....well, adult people, non-tech-fans, but they are a big slice of market
It's just when using the device one-handed I struggle to reach the top menu button.. maybe I have short thumbs :good:
On Viper rom is possible to set menu button always visible down in navbar.
I use InserCoin rom and their tweaks app has a setting to map long press on recent apps button to menu. Very handy!

ah come on!!! didn't know it....ok, now there is officially no point to use a menu button
And while I'm at it.. the calculator has plenty of advanced functions but no basic percentage button??
Just discovered that Xposed Sense Toolkit provides options to configure long press of recents/back buttons, plus a whole lot more tweaks.. menu button now sorted for us short-thumbed users! :good:
