Hi Guys,
I did the hack to get the phone option running on my new Rogers Tab and loaded the bell modem....everything works perfectly...BUT
my download speeds are from 1M to 2M and my upload is arond 1M. The same SIM card in my i9000M gets me 6M download the 1M upload....what gives?
Is the a hardware issue, plan issue or firmware issue?
Thanks.

None of the above. Just make sure you're using the SAME APN settings for both, and don't forget that speed testing on a cellular network is always a crapshoot.
My I9000M (recently back from repair) and my T959D (Telus Galaxy S) average lower speeds than my Tab using the same SIM card, in general, same with WiFi. I chalked it up to the Tab having a bigger antenna array.

Is the exact same APN settings and I have 850 and 1900 both enabled....I dont get it. I noticed this when I was downloading apps from the market and it wasnt download 300K a sec like I would get on my i9000..the tab was doing around a 100K/sec at max. Very frustrating.
Have you got WCDMA Only checked, or Auto?
From the dialer, do a *#0011# and see what band you're idling at (with WiFi disconnected) on the two devices.

It shows WCDMA 850 Band 5 and sometimes it shows 1900 Band 2.
BTW...my i9000M just died....Internal SD failure...I flashed too many DOCRoms i guess...going for repair...but wont get it back for another month or 2...so went out and bought this tab today to use as my phone...LOL...pretty big phone!

Mine took less than three weeks, they didn't repair, just replaced it. October 30th build date on the replacement. Talking to the guy at my Bell store, that's pretty much the deal they worked with Samsung recently, quick replacement for all SD failures instead of repairing at a local center. They still need to test, and they still have to wait for replacements to arrive, but the delay is much shorter, and there's less chance of a second and third return, as the replacement units are supposed to have more robust hardware.
Bad units now go back to Korea for factory refurb, to be used as future replacements in the pool.
But thinking it might be months instead of weeks, I bought a Telus Fascinate to replace the I9000M (sAMOLED ruins you for other phones). It also marks my 4th Galaxy S device. I had an I9000 (couldn't live without 850 band), a Captivate (couldn't get it unlocked, this was before they were "cracked"), then the I9000M.
Anyway, the I9000M is going on Craigslist, since I like the black bezel on the Telus unit better (doesn't look so damned much like an iPhone 3), and I've gotten used to 4 capacitive keys again thanks to the Tab.

These download and upload speeds are not up to par with my i9000M with the same SIM card...something must be wrong..no?

Since it doesnt feature the 850mhz frequency, how well does this perform on AT&T's service? particularly the southeast region?
it's a Quad band phone in GSM
as long as your carrier can use any of those, then you'll be fine
Voice calls are great. (quick story):
I drive home from work along Route 202 in NJ and have always had 3 really bad dead zones (actually 4 but the last one is hit or miss). I know the dead zones so well that I start telling people that I will call them back when I lose signal (before its dropped). Well I stopped using my iPhone 3G and migrated to the Samsung Galaxy S and what is amazing is that I have only one area that is still dropping calls (the longest dead zone). So this was not saying the galaxy S is good, it just says that most of the cursing of AT&T that I did was possibly because of the crappy iPhone.
Regarding Data; I see no difference that with my iPhone, except when I go to Manhattan (NYC) where I get mainly Edge and some 3G. At home and work (most places in NJ) I get HSDPA (?) (you know the "H" signal) and I have great download speeds (upload sucks so does latency)
The results here:

Great (super) Phone
3 issue remain for me though:
1) Fix the Damn GPS issues
2) Properly support the enterprise email (sorry Exchange is a requirement for most serious business phone....the definition of a smart phone) *
3) Get a standard and solid copy and paste solution (iPhone is the best, Blackberry is also good, android SUCKS)*
* only issue (1) is unique to hardware/firmware issues (2-3) are for google to fix!
Updatelease note I have an unlocked/imported SGS. the only ones I would have trusted to not be too dumbed down are the Sprint, Tmobile and Verizon versions (I needed a GSM phone and I hate Tmobile). AT&T's version changes things too much and the phone scores less than the other (rebranded) SGS's on all the benchmarks.
hmm, so should i grab the tmobile version of it or should i get the unlocked SGS? i think the main differences is the tmobile/att versions add the gyroscope, but take away the front camera...theres no other real changes correct?

From June 14th
"Samsung claims the Galaxy S showed 20 percent greater success rate of transmission and reception than any other smartphone out on market when they were tested in mountainous and major commercial areas."
I assume this relates to the international version, with possible similar service levels for US carriers but that would depend partially on the carrier and frequencies (though it still could be relatively better than the carriers other offerings). Then again, it is Samsung, so it's biased and we don't know their testing procedure.
http://www.arirang.co.kr/News/News_View.asp?nseq=103976&code=Ne2&category=2
so should i get the captivate or should i get the unlocked i9000? the only differences are the front camera and gyroscope right?
First of all, hello everyone.
I am on Rogers with the Rogers/At&T version of the Nexus One.
I'm not getting HSPDA speeds on my phone.
The best speed I've got is about 1Mbps, which is not HSPDA speeds, or at least not as fast as it should be.
I live in Montreal,Quebec and Sherbrooke,Quebec. Which both cities are covered with hspa+ from Rogers.
rogers.com/web/content/wireless_network
when I go in settings, about phone,
Mobile Network Type : UMTS and HSPDA ( depending if it's on on or the other, i see it in my status bar 3G or H, cyanogen mod)
I know network speeds are slow when there is more people connected to the towers, and this is my point, I travel enough to understand when there is or not a lot of people using the tower. ( Sherbrooke is a relatively small city compared to Montreal)
I also get slightly better speeds in Sherbrooke.
What can explain these slow speeds
I am with Rogers in Vancouver, my download speed is 3.2 mbps at daytime and can up to 5 mbps at night. I heard that there are lots of nexus one from T mobile with diff band and can't receive the 3g network. Are you using the latest Korean Radio as well, its helps to boost the download speed as well!
I never got to 5 mbps.
maybe 3 mbps at night never more.
my radio is : 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
I live in the Okanagan in BC, and I can get about 2Mbps down/500Kbps up from Rogers on HSDPA with my N1. My wife, with her N1 can get in and around the same on Telus. As minniecafe mentioned, when I'm down in Vancouver I can clear the 3Mbps mark. It really all comes down to where you live and how crappy the Rogers equipment is there.
I get crappy speeds in the day in Ricmond Hill Ontario, but it picks up at night. my build.prop file is edited which helps. something you can search around for.
I'm on Rogers in Montreal and I also get 3 during the day and 5 during the night.
In Quebec City with Videotron, I get 5+mbps with my N1. Also, Videotron is much cheaper. Glad I switched from Rogers.
The reason you might be getting crappy speeds would be because Rogers' network is now oversaturated with all those iphone users. Doesn't help that Rogers' network is old technology now. They've been having random 3G outages like crazy over the past few months since the iphone 4 launched.

I average anywhere from 1.5-3.5 Mbps down and 1-2.5 Mbps up.
Interestingly, my friends get about the same on various Android devices && newer BB's. However, friends on iPhone4 are averaging 5-6 Mbps down consistently. Since both Nexus One and iPhone 4 do HSDPA 7.2 Mbps on Rogers, I find it suspicious that iPhone4 is so much faster on their network :\ Unless there's something I don't know about the iPhone.

Since I got all of you Canadian+850/1900/2100 users here, let me ask you this:

I'm on 1700/2100 Mhz but heh, same thing.
My phone came stock with 5.08, I updated to 5.12 and I seem to get faster speeds and a bit better consistency...
You simply have to get a flashable zip file (check in cyanogen forums - download section for stable nexus one) and flash it in the recovery...that it, if you don't have an unlocked bootloader.
No matter the way, both are safe as long as you are using a decent recovery (newest clockwork or amon_ra) and as long as you VERIFY THE MD5 HASHES!
If you do that, the chances of bricking your phone are so small that we can completely ignore them

Thanks for the time you took to give me the blow-by-blow, but the specific info I need still eludes me: are the radio updates safe for 850/1900/2100 (AT&T) models? I'm afraid of -that-. After that, updating the radio itself is, to be honest, trivial.

I see, well I wish I could give you concrete proof that it works...but all I can say is that I have seen a few AT&T frequency Nexus Ones with newer radios...I hardly think they are dependent on the type you have since they come with the OS updates (for example, 4.06 came with Froyo)...these OS updates go on ANY Nexus One...Now these newer radios are korean, but I highly doubt it is any different...
I do understand your worry though as this is one of the only things that can brick a Nexus One...Hopefully someone can post actual facts...
I live around the Toronto downtown core, and I average around 2mbps - 3mbps.
However once at a friends house (who lives close to a tower) I managed to get 4.74mbps while on his SIM card (Bell) I was getting 5.32mbps.

I finally manned up and flashed radio_32.50.00.32U_5.12.00.08.zip (yes, checked the MD5s, thoughroughly. even md5sum'd the file after adbpushing it to the phone. overkill).

Hey guys still a noobie so take er easy, just figured id ask. Since bell is releasing the atrix here in canada tomorow and everything ive read about the lack of upload speed on the att version of the atrix(which i have and can atest to lol) is directly related to the handset and not the network, cause im capped as well and im on rogers here. Can the software from the bell version be applied to the att version?
interesting idea
might work ...
guess we'll find out in a few days

This is unlikely, it is a radio issue.
Flashing the radio worked for the Captivate to get HSUPA and the Nexus One gets HSUPA stock.

I'm really hoping its not capped. That way we can try and flash the US radio with the Bell radio. So far that is the only complaint I've had with the phone.
If anyone gets their hands on a Bell Atrix let me know. I can walk you through dumping the radio firmware from the device. Hopefully the Atrix will take it without having radio security turned off!

I remember all sorts of problems with flashing the Bell modem onto the Captivate when I still had it, like not able to be heard on a phone call. Did those issues all get worked out in the end?
@GermanGuy:
That was pretty much a conflict between the ROM in use, the Kernel in use, and the Radio in use (Cappyvate had a sound processor onboard that calls got processed through whereas the i9000 and others did not, so the components had to match up or you'd run into that issue)
Hopefully not a problem on Bell I'm mostly worried that the radio will be signed with a cert that the AT&T Atrix accepts!
Is the Bell modem HSPA+ capable, or is it strictly HSUPA/HSDPA?

bell modem will have hspa+ since their network supports it.
Then let's hope it is flashable. Would solve at least one of my problems.
Today I went to a bell store to see if they had the atrix on display. They didn't, however there was a guy talking to one of the bell employees with something that looked like the laptop dock. So i go closer, and what do you know, its the atrix. I start talking to both gentlemen and one of them tells me he is from Motorola and he is showing the Bell staff how the accessories work. I asked to borrow his phone for a minute and ran a quick speed test. I got 2.3 mbps upload and 7.9 mbps download. My jaw dropped. Then i went inside his gallery app and saw that his pictures date all the way back to late December. He said the atrix has been his personal phone for a while now and he goes around to different parts of the country to demo the units. awesome job if you ask me.

LOL way to snoop around in his private stuff!
Are you sure it was not connected to Wifi?
just picked up my new phone, however 3/4g data speeds are crap. speed tests come out at less then impressive (when i can do them) but real world performance is far bellow what the speed test says. i am pulling about 1Mb/s down and about 1Mb/s up (usually less but im rounding), now the fun part, if i try to pull up a website, it is slow as hell or times out. google market also times out 70% of the time. downloading a 1mb app can take upwards of 7 minutes as it pauses while doing this, facebook app usually times out or works for a few minutes and then stops receiving data. all this said, my battery died at noon today because my phone was constantly trying to sync with gmail, FB, google+, etc. if i watch the data activity icon it looks as if my phone repeatedly sends off requests but does not receive data back. i have seen that some at&t users with an unlocked i9100 are also having the same issues, but they seem to mainly be a apn issue. others are using root explorer to change some config files. am i alone? is my phone defective? or is this just my new galaxy s2 ruined by bell?

If I am correct, I think you should be able to experiment with the different modems avaliable for the SII.
For me the newest euro one has the fastest speeds, but that depends on the network and country you are in!

Weird.
I did not have any of those issues so I think you have a dud.
Take it back before you start trying other fixes etc as that's what the return period is for.
I've used it since yesterday (Thur/21) and didn't notice any issues/problems with WiFi, or HSPA+ speeds.
Hrm... mind you I didn't actually use it on Bell, could be their network.
As soon as I got the sucker I rooted / unlocked so I could pop my Rogers SIM in there and it's fine on Rogers.
Actually there is one thing you could check before you return.
Do a *#0011* and make sure your WCDMA says 850 Band 5, if it says 1900 it will be as slow as *[email protected](.
How is it that you change it to 850?
My baseband version changed to XXKG2 when it was originally UMKG2. This is probably why I'm showing as 1900 band when I do *#0011#*.
I'll have to wait for someone to post the UMKG2 modem file.
Could be Bells network. I thought maybe the custom ROM I am currently using was to blame but I am experiencing everything you are with my sgs1 and have been for about a week now. I'm in Calgary.
Edit : Also I get the best speeds on 1900, 850 is only useful out in the mountains here.

Dude you do realise that this is quadband GSM and quadband hspda phone. This means if you are on 1900 currently blame your provider or maybe you screwed band selection which is easily corrected. I usually turn off euro GSM and 3g frequencies and leave only our 850 and 1900 bands to save battery so it does not keep searching for 2100 for example.

Bell throttles their upload speeds, haven't touched their download speeds as far as I know.

ok, i am running on the 850 band 5. i did notice a slowdown on my sgs previously but not the timeouts/drop data connections/etc. i just finished a factory reset and lost all mobile net access for about 2 hours but have it back now (kinda). popped my sim out and back into my sgs and am having similar problems with the sgs but not as severe. i guess i can chalk it down to network issues that started up within 5 hours after buying the new phone. talked to the place of purchase and they are saying the network is loaded do to "rib fest" which in all reality only pulls maybe 1k to 2k of people that are already up here cottaging so i have trouble with there theory that the local towers are loaded as really its only one tower thats loaded more than normal. love the phone, wifi speeds and page rendering is retarded fast. i was watching a 720p video streaming from vimeo through the phone and scrolling around the page, it stayed smooth as butter. i just want my mobile internet to work. past that, when i have been able to do a speed test i have got no more than 2Mb/s, a far cry from what the technology can do. I hate you bell!
I have by Bell Galaxy S 2 running with telus, I am getting between 2-4 mbps download, and 1-3 mbps on upload. I an only getting up to maybe 1mbps on wifi, download or upload. I am using a 2.3.4 custom Darky Rom.
I'm getting 3 to 7mbps download on 4g and 1.5 to 4mps upload. Purchased from bell. On bell network.
On my home wifi 16mbps to 19mbps down, 1mbps up right next to the router.
I am using KF3 modem(radio) and it has improved the speeds and reception.. slightly (5 to 10%) but i do find the wifi signal doesn't crap out anymore which as my problem.
Try KF3 modem, put the file on your phone and flash with CWM http://www.mediafire.com/?fnkld9swo6u99
keep in mind there is no official ROM for bell yet so if u flash custom roms you wont have warranty until stock firmware is released for it.
maybe u gusy are in low 4g coverage ares? im around the don mills and lawrence area in toronto.
first one is 4g, second is wifi
Its probably most likely bell. Its nothing but corporate ripoffs. If this was the U.K they would be out of business. I dont see anywhere near 2mbit in newfoundland either.
*#0011# showd 0 HSPA+ connections so im guessing either bell doesnt have hspa+ here or bell has severely crippled the provisioning in favor of their internet sticks. But even then when a person pays nearly 60.00 a month for an up to 42mbit connection, it states that average is only something like 5 to 8mbit.
I share the same slowness and timeouts as you.

It seems they have bad coverage there. Why don't you get people in your area to sign a petition for Bell to install some antennas in the area and send it to Bell... worth a shot.
I am on Sasktel and the data on the Galaxy S II is quite poor. I have been getting aroud 2.5 Mbps Up and 2.5 Mbps Down max, this is including build.prop edits. I have tried KH3, KH1, KG3 and KG2 with KG3 yielding the best results. These numbers are about the same as my Nexus S but the Nexus S yielded much more consistant results.
2.7Mbps down and 1.5 up with KG6 on Telus
8 Mbps down & 1 Mbps up - On Virgin Mobile, HSPA+
Try flashing the KH3 modem using Odin, it's said to work extremely well on the Bell/Virgin network.
Just put the KE7 modem on my phone, pulled the best numbers I've got yet and I have tried MANY modems. 6012kbps up and 2633 down. Will continue to test and report back if there is a change. This is on Sasktel with a KH3 based rom.
Decent speeds for me in Guelph on Rogers.
*edit* After seeing some of the above posts maybe it's not so decent after all. Maybe I'll try some other firmwares for kicks.
Hi,
Had bought a T-mobile Note 2 that I got unlocked and was using on AT&T. That was all of 3 weeks ago, and over thanksgiving, dropped the damn phone and shattered the screen - the damaged phone is on Craiglist btw, goto Houston craigs and search "Broken Screen, otherwise working Galaxy Note".
In the market for a new one now - pending the sale of the damaged one obviously.
There are 2 many versions out there and ALL the searching I've done has left me even more confused.
There are 2 international versions - 7100 and 7105. In the US, there are carrier specific versions.
If you don't care about LTE, then apparently, the T-Mobile version was better even for use on AT&T - which is what I did, and was quite happy with the internet speeds on wap.cingular APN.
The one downside of the US specific versions is that they appear to lack the Wireless Charging pins (atleast the T-Mobile version doesn't seem to allow wireless charging).
If I were to go for an international unlocked version, would it be restricted to 2g speeds (like Iphone 4s would be limited to EDGE on T-Mobile) on AT&T?.. or, would it get decent HSPA+ atleast?.
Not too fussed about LTE - I use the phone for... emails...web surfing, occasional YouTube for the kids, so blazing fast internet is not a must, reasonable speeds are all I ask for.
So, simple questions really...1) US AT&T or US T-Mobile... or N7100 or N7105
2) Would either of the international versions get atleast HSPA+?
Again, I did read all the threads and left confused - hence this post.
Thanks for any help.
Riz
Check the bands for the carriers and with each phone

I have the international GT-N7100 version and am using it on AT&T until my contract expires in February 2013. You get with them the HSPA+ speed, not the LTE of course. I am going to eventually drop them just like they drop my call now...
In March 2013 my plan is to go with a prepaid service which uses T-Mobile network. By than T-Mobile will (hopefully) their 1900 spectrum active everywhere, which means that I should be getting a very good HSPA+ speed.
P.S. - That phone is available now from newegg.com for $600 till 11/27, but there are ongoing sales in that price range.
Thanks Reuven.
I managed to get rid of the broken Note 2 on craigs for 380$ within an hour or posting the ad... I'm wondering if maybe there is a very easy way to replace the screen... I got about 5 calls in the hour...
Went ahead and ordered the white one from NewEgg... 599 delivered is a pretty good deal.... (the 599 deal on the white ones is available till 11/27).

If you don't mind, you can "thank" me by clicking on the "Thanks" button.
The 7100 will get HSPA+ on AT&T (3G) because they operate HSPA+ on 1900 MHz.
You will only get 2G on TMO, because their HSPA+ is on 1700 MHz, which is not supported by the note 2.
TMO is slowly moving their HSPA+ service to 1900 MHz, which IS supported by the note 2, but the move will take until middle of 2013. (This is the reason why AT&T iPhones going to TMO network never got 3G, it was on the wrong band for those phones. One day those apple folks will be really happy when the switch is made, because they will suddenly get 3G service.)
You won't get TMO's "4G" 42mbit service even when the 1900 MHz switch is complete because the radio in the note 2 doesn't support it. 21 is as fast as it goes.
Overseas, the most popular bands for 3G are 900 MHz and 2100 MHz, both of which the 7100 supports.
I wouldn't waste time with the 7105. LTE is not widely used in europe, and when it is, it is very expensive.
Hope this helps! I just bought a 7100 in preparation for travel/relocation to London, so I did a fair bit of research.

I think i read somewhere that if your LCD is broken the whole part needs replacing costing $200 ish
But if just the front glass then its very cheap at about $20 although skill/familiarity is needed to make a successful repair.

The skill thats needed is beyond most of us - I asked one of these kiosk phone fix-it guys in a mall and he said the LCD and the external glass are glued together and even to replace just the glass he would replace the whole assembly as the use of a heat gun etc isn't that easy.
His estimate was: 250 or so for the LCD+Glass assembly, 30-40 bucks for his fixing charges.
I thought it better to recoup some money by selling the broken phone and getting a new one.

Yes, i would've done the same as you, people will pay as much sometimes for things needing repair because they are either stupid or want a challenge.
But you expressed surprise at the speed your phone sold & for the sake of others reading this i felt it may be worth pointing out the huge price difference between the two scenarios.
Glass like ebay item 170939616778 & others with a little device for getting it Unglued are on eBay & instructions for fitting are plentiful on You Tube.
Yes, all Repairers tend to advise a complete assembly simply because its really quick & easy to get right & most importantly some charge the $250 & then just fit a new glass

Some of the ebay listings for the outer glass came with big bold warnings stating chaging the glass is not a simple job etc etc, I don't mind getting my hands dirty to do a bit of tinkering, but, with the warnings, I thought best not to bother. About a year ago, I was in Pakistan, and there, ANYTHING can be fixed - these guys in the small shops in the electic market are magicians, I had a Galaxy S2 at that time and the screen was a bit scratched - I inquired at quite a few shops, and they all said, they can do it, but its fraught, and if its only some scratches, then I should just live with it.
Nevertheless, the speed with which the damaged phone sold makes me wonder maybe the Note ii isn't THAT difficult to repair.

I'm actually not at all bothered with LTE - decent 3G speeds are more than enough for what I use the phone for. I'm not going to be using it for dowmloading ISOs etc, so, yeah, even if its restricted to 21mbps HSPA, that theoretical rate is still 4 times the DSL rate I used to get in Scotland and was enough for me. My stay in the US is limited anyway; so, a US specific LTE device would be kind of lost on me anyway.
If you're in London, see if you can get Virgin cable broadband - UK DSL, even with ADSL2+ is mostly sucky.
Riz,
I agree, 21mbps is going to be plenty fast enough for me. Thanks for the heads up on Virgin cable! I'll have to see what availibility is in the area that I'm going to be.
