Got SIP and GV working on my tab, now I just need an unlimited data package. Virgin Mobile seems to have the most reasonable unlimited mobile broadband package I can find.
Would it be easy/possible to activate the VZW Tab as a mobile broadband device through Virgin Mobile? Do I need to unlock the device? Any other particulars I should know before trying to do this? Thanks!
EDIT: Looking into it more I think I might just pick up a Mifi2200 to use with the plan, that way I do not have to use the battery on the tab to do tethering. The Mifi device is pretty sleek and small, so it wouldn't seem too burdensome to keep it with the tab.

Hi everyone.
AT&T will sell you a data only package for the Galaxy tab for 25/month for 2gb. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with swapping the SIM cards from the Galaxy tab with a smartphone (I currently use the Nexus One) and having a just the Data only package.
In short, I'm satisfied with using Skype on 3G(using the cooked apk to allow 3g calling) when I'm not at home on wifi, and I use Google Voice for text messaging. AT&T won't sell a smartphone plan with just data only at a reasonable price.
Does anyone have any experience with this? My Nexus One shows up as an unknown phone under the AT&Ts website, so I'm wondering how I can drop my text (200 messages) and my 450/month plan so I can just have data only for 25/month.
It should work. I'm using the iPad SIM in the Galaxy Tab and it works fine. It worked in the HTC Aria and read it works in the Nexus One. You just need to change the APN to 'Broadband'.
So presumably it would work on a euro flashed galaxy tab as well? Thanks! - Kevin
Picked up my Tablet yesterday from T-Mobile. Connected to the web etc using Wi-Fi because I had lots of software to download. Could NOT get any data with my sim card.
I am grandfathered into a data package with T-Mobile which gives me Unlimited Data for $19.99 plus a voice package. Support told me that for this tablet to work I had to upgrade to their Web Connect package for $39.95 and I would NOT have voice. [because they INSIST voice is IMPOSSIBLE with the Galaxy Tab.] [whatever]
I didn't want to agree to their upgrade because my sim works PERFECT in my Dell Streak 5 .. I believe that there is something wrong with the Gal-Tab. I kept telling them that the internet net was the same in their web connect package, it was just more expensive. They told me I was wrong. So I said .. OK make the change. They did and 12 hours later I still cannot connect.
I contacted them this morning and got them to give me my OLD $19.99 internet package and voice back ..
SO .. Any ideas ?? I even tried changing the APN on the Samsung to the same as on my streak. My streak is epc.mobile.com .. the Samsung had it as epc.tmobile.com
I had an issue with my data when I first got my tab too - the support personnel signed me up for an incorrect data package and all I got was a redirect to a Tmobile page when trying to use the browser (and no data on any other apps).
After talking to Support they changed my data package and voila, it worked.
So what's going on - unfortunately T-Mobile US filters Galaxy Tab's by IMEI. As such, they completely block it from working on any plan other than the data plan built for it. Despite the fact that the tab is technically capable of being a phone, T-Mobile will not allow it on their network.
So your telling me when I get my galaxy tab if I pop in my wifes T Mobile sim it wont work. That is truly annoying.
Instead of getting a new data package I am going to just pay the 10 a month to add mobile hot spot to her phone which will work great (maybe even faster because she has 4G on her phone)
THANKS .. I hate T-Mobile but have been with them for 8 years .. I guess I have just learned to put up with their NONSENSE !!
Since Dell Streak 5 came from AT&T Tmo does not have records and treats it as a smartphone. The same will be true for the Galaxy Tab purchased from AT&T. You will be able to get data and even voice using other Tmo Sim after reflashing proper firmware.
But since these two carriers use different frequencies for 3G you would get only EDGE.
It is hard for us to understand rational for such decisions. It seems that they are loosing Tab sales. Why do European carriers find it profitable while US not?
there is a way to get both voice+data on the tab using a standard t-mobile sim with data+voice. 1-you need to flash an European ROM to get voice and 2-then there is the issue of the IMEI which blocks the tab from accessing the web with a sim that already has data.
the second part cant really be posted as i was already removed by the mods due to rules violations, but it can be done i am using my Vibrants SIM on the tab.
Sounds like someone failed to do their homework. T-mo Tab is suppose to be data-only device and utilizes different APN's with custom modem firmware then smartphones, hence why your SIM would not work. You need to root the Tab, flash Euro firmware, then flash a custom modem. Instructions can be found in the development forum. Also, keep in mind that flashed T-Mo Tab can only get EDGE, no 3G.

That's not correct! You can get 3g data with your T-Mobile sim card with the correct modem. Just use roto-modem switcher

I think all our posts can confuse anyone.
The question was about using Tmobile smartphone Sim with the Tmobile Tab.
Let me say this: there is no way to get legitimely both voice and data on Tmo network using Tmo Sim. You can get voice without cellular data, or 3G data with different modem and separately paid broadband service Sim not the smartphone Sim.
I put my Sim card from my MyTouch 4G on the Tablet and phone works n/p but you need to flash a Euro rom! Thats it bottom line! Flash The rom and you will have phone access
I have a laptop that has a ATT SIM card with data plan. I tried to use it with my ATT Galaxy tab but it didn't work! I easily reach my 2GB limit on my TAB and I was hoping I could use the one in the laptop since I rarely use it. I did SIM unlock (although both are ATT SIMs) yet didn't work.
Any ideas if this can be done and how?
Thanks
Hello.
Although not specific for you, I've done similar with my Canadian Bell Android phone with unlimited data plan, and Bell Galaxy Tab with pay per use plan.
I now have galaxy tab with unlimited data plan, provider is none the wiser.
Your issue might be the apn difference between the tab and the apn set up on your laptop's sim plan.

Thanks for your reply, but how did you do it? or it did work right out of the box without any adjustments?
Anybody have an answer or work around would be much appreciated
Find the APN settings from your service provider for the sim.
Then install APNDROID PRO and enter them settting from above. Install the sim and your laughing! !!!

Can anyone with HTC 8X or Nokia 822 confirm what happens when you turn on internet sharing with an unlimited data plan? Does it prompt you to call Verizon to activate a tethering plan? Or does it just work?
Its tells me to call Verizon and subscribe....nokia 822... I have rooted galaxy nexus I use for tethering

Carries suck.
This kind of stuff irks me. Why do they charge you more to use the exact same data?

I have a brand-new 8X. when I turn on IS, it says "connection not shared - Internet sharing isn't currently allowed." However I am not on the new all-share unlimited plan until the 20th, so maybe that's why.
I have a VZ unlimited data plan and after changing some settings, it just works.. before you get the agreement page to add it to your plan, but after going into edit mode: M.I.P. profile > DUN NM the info has your number @dun.vzw... just take out the dun and save.. but I have an HTC trophy... so may not be the same..
Is there any way to create an App that does this? Verizon recently lost a suit from the FCC that forced them to allow tethering apps from the android market for android phones. FoxFi and others now allow tethering no matter what plan you have.
If the access exists within WP8 it would be sweet to do the same thing, even if it has to be developer unlocked.
I was just coming here to find out if this was possible. I currently have a 32gb SIII and am getting ready to trade it for a 8X but need this to work. I am not willing to give up my unlimited plan though...
can we sue ATT, Verizon for tethering lock?

No we can't sue them about the lock. The reason they were able to go after them was because they blocked an app from the marketplace from working on their network.
That violated the agreement they signed with the FCC when they acquired the 700MHZ block which says “shall not deny, limit, or restrict the ability of their customers to use the devices and application of their choice.”
So only Verizon is beholden to this and it would only apply to them blocking devices or apps. You might notice that devices part is pretty interesting

I have the HTC 8x and would love to get Internet Sharing working. Where is the "agreement page"?
Now that there is finally root for the AT&T version of the S5, I want to get free mobile hotspot on phone. I have an unlimited data plan with them and I want complete freedom for my phone. Is there a tutorial out there that will work for this device. Also is there a way that AT&T will not find out that I'm tethering.
I don't think they will find that you are tethering. What they'll know is that you are simply using high bandwidth.
