I have been reading the thread on flashing the AT&T galaxy tab and am getting ready to do it on my device. However, I see no clear explanation on how to revert back to the original build on my device should something go wrong.
Is there a way of backing up my tab prior to the flash so I can restore to it's full glory should something go wrong?
Thanks
I have been wondering the same thing. I haven't been to find anyway to back it up either.
Is there any 3rd party software we can use to make a copy of the device on the PC? I cant get Kies to work, and I heard it adds all kinds of bloat to your device anyway.
Go to the android development forum and look for clockwork recovery. You should be able to back up your tab before you flash.

Clubtech also posted AT&T stock firmware so you could flash back to stock I assume.

Hi Everyone. I am brand new to Android and want to get started modding but want to have a good fallback plan in case something goes wrong.
I have been looking at some of the backup options and with all my searching I am having trouble finding out exactly what each of them do. The most popular seem to be Titanium Backup, Roto-Backup, and ClockworkMod. Are those correct?
From what I have gathered so far Titanium backup looks like it seem to get all your apps and settings and looks like its firmware independent. (You can backup from stock and reapply on a flashed ROM and it will keep your firmware the same and just reapply your settings and apps over top)
What I cant find is much detailed information on Roto-Backup and ClockworkMod Backup. Would someone be able to explain what the differences are and what I should be using.
What I want to be able to do if possible is basically take an "Image" of my device as it is now (Stock Rogers Tab JJ6), flash it to try Roto's new ROM, and be able to flash back to my existing stock Rogers setup if needed. What I am actually afraid of is that say official gingerbread or honeycomb comes out and if we are using something like Roto-JMG, that we will not be able to upgrade to it.
So basically I guess what im asking is, is there a way to create a custom ROM of my current Tab so that I can always get back to my stock carrier Firmware?
Thank you guys, and I apologize if I have missed a previous thread that already has answered this.
Use Roto-Backup, it does pretty much the same as nandroid but in a much more easily recovered from way. (CWM relies on a custom kernel, Roto-Backup doesn't)
I'm looking for some help here. I tried sideloading some unsupported apps (Swype), didn't get all of the files in the right place and have locked the 10.1v up. It will boot, but locks as soon as I try to access anything. This includes "Settings" so I can't revert to the stock keyboard. Even connecting the USB when booted freezes it. Same with "Safe Mode".
I can get into download and fastboot, so I'm thinking to just start over. Has anyone out there got a copy I can use?
Thanks.
Have you tried using adb to remove the files?
Did you put them in /system ?
If not, use the wipe option in the recovery menu
eeeeouch!!!
Thx for the heads up... I was JUST about to load a WGA version of Swype Beta onto the Tab...I would've ended up in a bit of a mess too then.
If I knew how to export my ROM I'd send you a copy of mine. no idea how to do it though.
P.S. try this post: http://www.techofweb.com/technology/unlock-samsung-galaxy-tab-101v.html ... it tells you how to unlock your Tab and it'll Factory Reset it in the process. But assuming your Tab is only a few days old, it's probably better to admit stupidity and take it back for a reset under warranty than to try and go out of your way to void your warranty by hacking it even more... that's just my take on the issue.
Thanks. I saw that, but can't get Fastboot to recognize the tab. Also, don't be too scared of Swype; I don't really know what I'm doing. Hence, this whole thread. :-D

I'm trying to restore my Acer Iconia A500 back to the stock/ original ROM so that I can grab the official update in July. Is there any way to do that? I really like the custom ROMS, I just want to revert to see what it was like.

And, of course you made a backup via clockworkmod???? eh?
Why are so many not making backups of their tabs before installing unknown software?
There's lots of threads about this in the forums with instructions already. And this belongs in the General forum, not development.
Yes I'd also be interested in this. I have the droid x so when ever I want to revert to factory settings theirs a program on the computer (rsd lite) I use to revert it. So I almost never backup my roms. Now on my iconia they don't have such program. At least that I know of. So I flashed a rom on my iconia and didn't make a backup of my current one. I tried fixing it by flashing stock_acer a500.zip I thing by dexter don't quote me on that one. But it was the emea version so now its stock european and I live in america. Help is apreciated.
I'm a flashing person that has flashed many times on my phones. I forgot to make a nandroid backup of my original rom myself...so I'm not judging. I would say, flash honeyvillian, as its the closest thing to stock I've seen.
But, if your already flashing, I wouldn't want to grab the official anything...someone will post it once it comes out.

I want to flash it to the latest stock. So when ota 3.1 is released, I could rest assure knowing that my device would get updates ota.

because we are impatient and stupid
I am running to get someone with a tablet of my country to get back the STOCK ROM in case of... I am going to see if I can deal with the shop to root and recovery on SD Card the stock rom so I will be able to have the stock rom...
For USA version 1.104.02, Check out this post.. You'll probably want to skip flashing the stock recovery until you know the system will boot normally.. So from this post, run itsmagic, flash boot, flexrom and system, in that order. Preferable from an adb connection. The tablet will freeze while flashing system. Give at least 5 mintues to make sure it's complete.
You may need to do a data wipe if it bootloops (that's why you should skip flashing recovery). Once it's booting normally, you can flash the stock recovery if you want.
Alternatively, you should be able to replace the files in dexter's stock update zip with these files. But I haven't looked at that zip, so I don't know if system is an image file or a archive file.
Thanks for the replies quick question though. How do in run its magic is their a command for ADB or do I acess it via clockwork recovery?

You download it from the itsmagic thread in the development form and follow the directions in that thread.

I too would like to restore to the 3.0.1 stock rom, however my backup of the stock rom got corrupted somehow. I know it had to be something I done, but know not what it was I did. Any help would be much appreciated. Or would it be a better idea to flash the 3.1 leak?
Hello All,
New to owning an android device and so far I like it, well that is Is like android, but not the slow and sometimes laggy touchwizz
I think I want to root and flash a 4.2.2 Rom onto my phone.
I have a few questions for you guys though.
Is rooting and installing a flashed ROM easy?
Once I have gone to a flashed ROM I assume I can only update be flashing a new ROM?
Is there ever a way to put my Galaxy S4 to a state in which you'd never know it had been modyfied?
I notice there are ROMS to go back to touchwizz, do they have the automatic updates as originally intended by Samsung?
Thanks in advance

Here isn't the right place for questions. There is an exclusive section only for that. Over XDA is possible to find a lot of tutorials teaching how to root and install a custom ROM. Root is easy, it was released CF-Auto-Root, you just need install drivers, odin and flash on your phone. In order to install a rom you need to do a similar process to use custom recovery that will be able to install ROM's.
If you have i9505 you can use Triangle Away app that will erase any trace. But if you have i9500 (octa), that isn't possible (yet, as people say). But you always can return to stock rom, kernel, etc.
If i'm not saying a mistake, some rom's allow you to receive updates.
Yes it's fairly easy. There are tons of guides here and on YouTube. Takes like 2 minutes.
That's correct.
You can revert back to stock and get official updates yes. There's a tool/app called triangle away that you need to run, then boot recovery and do a wipe. After that go in to download mode and flash stock rom from Odin. Maybe this wasn't the most detailed response hehe. I always recommend to beginners to look up a guide on YouTube that shows this step by step. Then it's difficult to fail
If you run in to problems just come back here and ask. Also don't forget to do a backup of your stock rom from your recovery just in case.

It is easy and difficult at the same time
First of all, it does not hurt to be computer-savy. Your phone is a little computer, nothing else.
If you know what a Bootloader is and a Kernel and a ROM and if you know what an administrator is and if you can install Windows on a PC, you shouldn't have much troubles. Even better is when you already have some Linux knowledge.
OTOH if you are the type of person who has difficulties using a computer at all, or if you think Windows 7 is too complicated to handle, you will face more difficulties (OTOH you will learn a lot!).
So the rule of thump is:
As long as you follow instructions, but do not know what the hell you are doing, follow all instructions very closely. As you progress, you will know what you do, and then it gets much easier.
Have fun!
Done it!
Was easier than I imagined.
I've installed custom ROM's reverted back to a backup and the likes, just taking it through the motions so I know how to do everything.
My next question is.... How to I remove CWM Recovery if I want the phone to go completely back to stock?

Moved to Q&A section.
Just flash stock rom via odin founded in sammobile. there is stock roms, just put the unique file in PDA and start. It contains recovery, kernel, region customization and modem. Do wipe data and cache before flash. If it stop in boot logo, enter stock recovery and do wipe cache, and a factory reset.

I just want to add a small note here,as I just started rooting and flashing.PLEASE backup everything ,literally everything.Without backing up the state where your phone is not rooted and not flashed, there is no way you can go back to that state.
Also use nandroid backup and a backing up app which backs up your ESF files.
Hi All,
I just got an SPH-i337 yesterday and attempted to Root + Install Mod.
I ended up rooting and installing Safestrap (TWRP 2.6.x.x). Upon first use I backed up my current OS to a removable SD card using the utility in TWRP. I then, because I was not clear on how to download install CM which was what I was going to, installed ROM Manager and selected CM without setting up a ROM slot. I think this is where I went wrong.
Upon reboot, I was unable to access the Stock ROM and had no options to go to CM. When I attempted to perform a restore from my backup on SD it failed as well and keeps going to the Android recovery screen (not TWRP).
I'm now just trying to go back to stock and have tried using both Heimdall and Odin to no avail. Odin at least provides an error message:
SW REV. CHECK FAIL: Fused:4, Binary:1. What does this mean? That I'm attempting to use an image (.tar.md5 file) which is not current? Is there a way that I can still recover my phone?
..also, please let me know if there are pieces of information that I'm missing. I don't have much to go off of since the firmware and other information (I believe) is not able to be accessed.
Again I just got the phone yesterday. I also have about 40 tabs open that are full of searches that I've been doing regarding this. As yet, no luck.

Look for the mk2 tar files. And do a lot of reading. You went wrong in a number of different areas

Safestrap only works with other TW ROMS, so your first issue was trying to use CM. Second, it's not official TWRP and is not even installed to the recovery partition so using ROM Manager was your second issue. Trying to boot into recovery normally will take you to stock recovery since it isn't installed in the recovery partition, there should be a splash screen that comes up after the Samsung Galaxy S4 screen asking to either press for recovery or continue. If that works, you can use the backup from there. If it's gone, you have to use ODIN. The reason you get that SW REV. CHECK FAIL is because you're trying to flash an older firmware than you have. Depending on if you were on 4.2.2 or 4.3 you will either need the MF3 or MK2 .tar.md5 respectively.

Thanks for pointing me to those files. I'm sure I did go wrong in a few places as I felt that I was largely just winging it.. There's a TON of information out there. Is there anything specific that I was more wrong than the rest?

Thanks everyone. Hell of an introduction to Android, I have to say considering I just got off the WinPhone bandwagon yesterday (been using it for ~7 years).

Unfortunately, it seems that I can't use the method listed directly on that page on account of running the MK2 baseband. If I'm going to go forward it looks like I'll have to use SafeStrap and unofficial TWRM + TW mods for the time being.
Of course, if something about what I'm saying is wrong, I'd be glad to hear it.
