Hello all I got my first Nexus One yesterday I know I should root it but I've never dropped the cash I did for a device I know there is a chance of a brick. I need to let the newness wear off.
But the purpose of this post is any suggestions on specific apps for the Nexus I can try out in the market. There are some that Ive read in this forum some but maybe some were left out.
Thanks in advance.
Just sayin, but the only real chance of a brick is to let your battery die or pull it while flashing the radio. (to my understanding)
try the XDADevelopers app, it's pretty nifty.
done and done has anyone ported swype to nexus yet

It gets annoying reading this over and over and there is an option in your settings to turn of this spam. Consider this a polite request to do so, thanks.

Thank you for these
Just make sure your battery is charged, you probably won't brick this phone unless your trying to.
While there's not much of a chance for bricking, it supposedly does void your warranty. Some people have been able to get work done even after unlocking though.
With that said, I thought the same thing and thought I would wait about a month before I unlocked it, but that lasted about 2 days lol.
I unlocked it and flashed Cyan's ROM and haven't looked back since.

If you didn't engrave it, don't root it yet. Use it for a week or two, make sure there's no reason to return/replace it due to some defect. If there is no reason, then root it =)
My only 2 reasons for rooting it are: WiFi tethering and Flashlight. Imo, there are no other real reasons to do it, stock rom is extremely well done and I didn't notice much difference between it and Cyan.
Just root it..you'll truly own your phone then. Unless you don't know how to read and follow instructions properly or are just plain incompetent..which I doubt you are since you found this forum~ the chances of bricking are low.
Root it and never look back.
Nah, give it a few days to let any hardware issues make themselves known, then root it if your of a mind.
If you don't root it, all you are going to be able to think about is rooting it. I say use it for a few days to make sure all the hardware is good and go for it. I think I lasted about 36 hours before giving in and I told myself that I wasn't going to do it!
Sent from my employer's computer with internet monitoring enabled...
I, too, have the same fears and concerns... so I've never really attempted to root the phone nor tried to. I guess I just like it the way it is.

My reasoning for wanting to root it, is so I can put the Desire rom on the device. I really enjoy the HTC Sense and android. The stock android on the Nexus One is fantastic I agree just IMO missing the Sense UI.
It seems the phone is not able to take a picture while it is in a call. I am not sure if this is normal for Android or just the SGS. If possible, it would be great if the option was made available. I don't use this feature a lot but there are times when you want to be able to do that.
Thanks
Really why do you want to be able to take a picture while on a call just to be able to do it or what ?

Someone wrote that popup. They wrote it for a reason. My guess is that the phone.apk and the camera.apk are too RAM hungry, or other-resource hungry to run well together.
I love both of the apps. They're the best I've seen for either on Android yet. I'd like to see them work together at the same time, but there's no one in my life who wouldn't let me call them right back after I take a pic or two.
Maybe if you're calling 911 and trying to catch what you're reporting, but that's why I have a camera in my glovebox all the time. I'd recommend it (just in case you're flashing a ROM while driving and it didn't get a chance to boot up....)

That happened to me the other day: I was riding the motorcycle down the interstate and I put my sandwich down so I could change lanes, as I was merging I wiped and flashed CM6 on my Vibrant and this lady ran me off the bridge. By the time I swam to shore she was driving away and I was stuck in a boot loop and couldn't take a picture of her plate. I was so upset I finished eating my sandwich and swam home.
ewww soggy sandwich lol. great story lol oh and too bad for the boot loop, stupid lady. in all seriousness though, im not sure why but mine has no problems taking pictures while being on the phone, but again, i think it is because i use my luetooth all the time

Too lazy to get up. I will test with BT in the morning.
See? I knew someone would have a situation!
That's one that'll keep me chuckling into tomorrow.
BTW, I tried it with bluetooth. Nada. I still get the error with the OEM camera app. Camera Magic is my alternate. It's lightweight.
Glad you got out of that one safely.
So my question is pretty simple. What are the benefits of rooting? Do they outweigh voiding your warranty?
Opinions please.
you can install the RUU and revert back to the original. Apparently no one should be able to tell if it was rooted before.
If you have to ask you dont need it.

Root voids warrenty period. There is your answer. Can still get away with it. Also future reference. There is a search option. I answered this same topic 2 days ago. There isn't a reason not to. And winmax is fine. Some peoples Mac changes and have to fix it. Some roms don't have 4g. Its worth it to just tether for free.

I'm new to the Evo, and android in general, so a couple of quick questions -
When you guys say the fps limit is unlocked, is that just for the screen? Or is that also when recording 720p video (the framerate seems quite low in that)?
Can you root an Evo from Linux? I don't have a windows or mac PC, and the tutorials I've seen (I haven't done an extensive search yet) all seem to use windows.
What is the 90-100% power cycle? I don't believe I've seen reference to that before.
Sorry, not trying to hijack the thread, it just seemed an appropriate place for the questions.
I remember when this "what is root/why should I root" question plagued the G1 forum years ago.
The 90-100 power cycle is when when the phone % drops within minutes of unplugging the charger. Correct? I think thats what thats all about, apparently its driving some of us crazy.
Im pretty sure you can root using Linux, you probably have to search for instructions. You couldn't just use a friends pc? The one click is just a simple exe file that works in minutes. Oh you do have to install the Android driver the ln the exe.
Im not sure about the fps cap, I do know HTC did put one on and some roms removed it. I bet it had to do with battery life or something.

Thanks for the response - I read somewhere on this forum that if you charge the Evo via USB, that it got a full charge, and wouldn't drop off in the first couple of minutes, as opposed to using the stock wall charger. Has that not proven to be the case for you?
I reckon I could use a friends PC...but I don't want to use a one click method - I want to be as hands on as possible, to fully understand what's going on.

Congratulations on your new phone! It's one if the best out right now, and has hardware that's good enough to keep it decent for awhile.
One thing; don't pay much attention to "vibrant vs x phone" debates. They're cool to read just to find out what options other phones have and how they compare, but don't let them change your mind about your purchase. Vibrants are awesome!

congrats you will love the phone. Remember to post questions in the Q & A section look over some of the stickies posts (usually at the top of each forum division.
some easy fun things from the market to play with to familiarize you with the phone
Down load speed test. This app runs a speed connection test download and upload. Neat to see different areas speed connection
Get the XDA app to stay informed.
Wheres my droid. I like this one as if you misplace your phone you text it and it raises the phone ring volume to max and rings (this has been useful for me).
Sd card speed tester. This will test the read write of your sd card.
There are bunch more great things but these are fun.
I moved from the a dumb phone to an SDA to an iPhone to the Vibrant, so they weren't totally huge jumps lol
If I were you I will stay until 11/8 to see what is new
Thanks guys nd I have a question 4 u guys so I got an update from tmobile and after I accepted it some application were gone and remember when u press nd hold the home button u have a task manager thimg rite nd after the update it was gone =(
You were reverted back to the original firmware. It is happening a lot for some reason. Why don't know why. They may be getting ready to push out another OTA.
If you really want the update back you can use ODIN to push it back. Check the Bible over in the development section. But I would wait. We may be getting Froyo tonight.
Lol uep excited abt that thamk u
You should just for the heck of it. And then play around with some minor modding to get the hang of things.

No pit file needed.
Put your phone into download mode:
Plug phone into USB
Turn it off
wait til battery icon appears
Hold down both volume buttons and power.
As SOON as battery icon disappears let go of power button.
Should see big yellow sign.
Open ODIN, place the PDA file as the JI6 tar file you downloaded above and go for it.

How is it running? I'm running it on my phone for about half a day and it seems okay.. i was expecting it to run a little bit faster! And r u having problems with sms because I can't seem to receive any messages?
Sorry, I know im a NOOB and all, but is this not the general discussion forum? This is a general discussion about a particular ROM....If i am wrong please correct me and I will gladly STFU and keep my comments to myself.
And for the record the ROM is quite sluggish, reboots when disconnected and reconnected to/from a car charger, incoming calls went straight to VM when answered, mad battery drain, will not reconnect to WIFI....not sure about messages yet...
But on the bright side, it is eye candy.

It always will be sluggish because Sense is a memory hog and the Hero has small memory to begin with. I personally don't run into any reboot excepts for the few after the first boot. As for calls and texts I can't test that because my Hero is deactivated. But I haven't had any issues with WiFi ever on my builds both with college WiFi up in Santa Cruz and at home here in San Diego.

Just calling it like i see it. Not knocking any work, as it is way over my head. The WIFI just kept reverting to "error", no text messages came through, but they did save to Google voice so i did find them...but when I couldn't pick up the calls, I had to abandon this one for now...
Everything else looks awesome from here!
Yea there is a sms problem with this rom.. many of my friends called me asking why I didn't reply to their message but I never received em. Other than that this rom is very nice!!
Fix has already been worked up.

Just wanted to put in my two cents on this rom. I absolutely love this rom. I tend to run aosp Roms since they are pretty lightweight for our processor and quick. This rom isn't as fast as an aosp rom can be. It does however run quick enough that I don't mind the occasional hang up or lag. I hadn't ran a sense rom in over a year and a half. But I do like this one.
I tend to only use my phone to make calls, the occasional text, and to tether my tablet which this rom seems to do wonderfully. When I was running jaybobs rom I was happy with the clock settings at 352 and 532. I have it cranked up to 768 with this rom. Never had been able to overclock that high until his kernal and was actually a major reason I tried this rom.
You would think that after being a member of xda for more than a year that I would have more than 3 posts but most of the time you guys explain stuff well enough that I don't need to ask any questions.

Its a 2 year old phone.. your asking it to do something it CAN'T do. Fact.
I would like to just stop in and say thanks to all who have worked on this. Have not been into the droid scene for long but have learned so much. This rom is my favorite sense type rom. Small time issues that can be overlooked are fine by me. And after backing this rom up and then booting back into stock. Then using titanium backup to back up Sprint TV and a few other things. Then Booting back into Zero Hero and restoring those apps they work flawless. (sorry i have a child who likes to watch that sprint tv, keeps her occupied when im busily getting something done)
Thank you all of you guys. Out of 5 roms i have tried me and my girlfriend like this one the best.
