Hi all,
For any Sydneysiders interested in release dates for the XDA II: Harvey Norman, David Jones and Harris Technology have all confirmed a shipment arriving on Wednesday December 10th, product instore Thursday, December 11th.
(Sorry if this information's already been posted!)
Hope this helps anyone who has so little else going on in their lives that they have to obsessively stalk small, touchscreen technologies (like me).
DMcG
Thats the same time frame as Ive beeen quoted in Melbourne.
Did they mention any prices, Ive been quoted 1599 with a 128 SD card and 1467 without.
Jon
Geez, I hope that that will be similar for Melbourne. I had a P800, and lost it in Bourke st. waiting for a tram. My insurance has been approved, so I am just waiting for Optus to get the XDAII so I can pay the difference. I have called them numerous times, and they don't have any idea when it will be out, they say maybe end of december, early Jan?!!? You can really tell they don't have a clue. They better hurry up and get it before I go to Queensland on the 23rd!!
916senna: Just for your info. , Calculator King in south Melbourne has had the imate-ppc since last Thursday. I called them up this morning as I saw it on their website.
Now the question is: how long will it take Optus to have them available?????????
Thanks GTR,
Organiser world has had the Imate for about the same time. But I think (Not sure) they are sim locked to vodaphone, whereas the O2 ones are for Optus and Telstra.
Telstra told me they will have them on the 12th and I dont see why Optus would be different, You just need to find someone in Optus who knows what there talking about.........good luck!
Cheers
Jon
PS Do you have a GTR?
Who did you speak to regarding the Telstra release? I called and the only release they are expecting is some time in January, according to their product testing update.
Also, no I dont have a GTR. I used to have a R33 gts-t, but I havent changed my nick in aages. Back then, I used to blow over GTR's, hehe.
Telstra shop in Queen St City.
Spoke to a girl named Mia.
But to be honest I'm not sure if shes got a clue. Tried to sell me a Bluespoon digital at what she called retail price. Except it was about $50 more than the published retail for the bluespoon. I specifically asked for a price on an XDA2 and she gave me the price for the XDA. (That when she checked and said the XDA2 would be in on the 12th.)
Cheers
Jon
I gave them a call, and they also said the 12th. The guy there reckons that that is when their stockist will have it, and it could be another month until they get it at their store. ?Q!!?!?!?
I called another Telstra store, and she is getting back to me (said she would call the stockist directly, then get back to me). I missed her reply, so now its a cat and mouse game of getting back to each other.....
Kinda moot, but here's an update anyway.
916senna - Harvey Norman has quoted $1557 at me, and that's with no bonus bits.
I've been on their back about the XDAII since last Wednesday. First the shipment was delayed... then it was delayed again... then they didn't know what was happening:
"Duh, it's not here. I dunno where it is."
(Yeah... that helps me).
So on Tuesday I emailed TechPacific about shipment arrival and delivery, and was told they started shipping to stores on Friday. Called back Harvey Norman (in a minor fit of rage) and spat this information at the attendant.
They: "Uuuh... it usually takes two or three days for stuff to get to our stores..."
I: *growl*
They: "...and everyone's been asking about them..."
I: *growl* "Then you should really know more about them, shouldn't you?" *growl* *teeth clench, one cracks*
They: "...hello? Are you there? I'm getting static... *pause* That's better. We can put your name down and reserve a unit for you, if you like."
I: "That-would-be-lovely-thank-you."
So now, my name is allegedly on a waiting list, to be called when the XDAII arrives.
It's now Thursday, mind you, and I've heard nothing. Soooooooo, I'm going to call David Jones and see if they've got the XDA II. If they do, I'm going to call back Harvey Norman and see what's going on. If they have them and didn't call me, then they've just lost themselves a customer. $1557 will go to someone else without hesitation, I've had it with incompetent retail staff. It's not that hard a job.
DMcG
I know now that its at Telstra stores (the one in Highpoing shopping centre anyway), they called me and said they now have it in stock for $1599!.
Just waiting for Optus stores to get it now, so that my insurance can organise for me to get one as a replacement for my P800 (paying the difference in market value of course)
*grumble*
Not more than an hour after writing my last post, Harvey Norman called me. "Your phone's here... come get it..."
*sigh* That huge spike in blood pressure for nothing.
Anyway, I'm now the ridiculously proud owner of an XDA II and a Logitech Mobile Bluetooth Headset. So far, so good...
No word on the XDA II backpack yet... they seemed quite offended when I asked after it. "What, isn't this enough?!?!"
Who is this tech pacific? Are they the Australian distributors or something?
If so, do they distribute for Optus? I have no idea, and you probably wont either. Im haaaaaaaaaaaanging for my XDAII from Optus.
TechPacific are the Australian distributors for a lot of techy-nerd products.
You can try contacting them, they were really quite civil with me - replied within the hour.
http://www.techpacholdings.com.sg/Contacts/contacts__tech_pacific_australia.html
Hope this helps you.
Would anyone like to take a guess as to what sort of pricing Optus will release the XDA II on contract? My contact expires in March 04 but they normally let me upgrade a month or so earlier...
No Idea. Id be gessing it will be similar to telstras pricing. In Melbourne, Telstra had it for $1,599, and in Queensland at Pacific Fair, they had it for $1,349!!!!! whats going on there? Anyways, I dont care about others, just Optus. I have been waiting for sooooooooo long for them to get it, so I can get it as my insurance replacement. They seem to be the only ones who dont have it yet. Apparently, Optus finished their network tests a few days before christmas (according to a guy named Owen as Pacific Tech). Optus stores, let alone insurance department however, dont even have a listing, or a price. They keep saying now early january, mid january.
This is making me insane
Notebook.com.au have the XDA2 for $1305 which seems to be the best price going around in Australia.
http://www.notebook.com.au/ProductDetails.aspx?item_id=3XDA0002
But I am still faithfully waiting for Optus (Damm you Optus!) to bring out the XDA2 on a plan. I am happy to stay on contract with Optus and hopefully they can beat that price with the contract.
Bugger Optus, I was waiting for too long. They had been saying for soooooo long they were getting it, and never do. Apparently, they are having problems testing on the network. (I was told by Pacific Tech, their distributor and tech staff at optus). I was waiting as I had put in a claim for my P800, and got market value for it for $1239. I thought I would wait for Optus to get it, pay the difference, sweet. Instead, I kicked up a fuss about how log I was waiting, and I got a cash settlement instead ) happy me!!!!
Telstra store in Port Melbourne did the O2 XDAII for me for $1230 cash, I was VERY happy. Im on Optus, no problems at all. I think what they are waiting for is to set up that Optus ZooTV to be compatible with the XDAII first, before they release it. (Told by Danielle in Insurance). This is because, I was told, the XDAII doesnt have some type of browser compatibility with Zoo TV. Once thats cleared up, they seem to think 2 weeks from last Friday, it should be available to stores to buy.
Without actually looking to closely at it that Zoo Tv looks pretty crappy. Well I plan to give it about a month (by then my contract should expire). There seems to be heaps of places that are now selling the XDA II and I-mate but I want the XDA II. The prices are continually dropping so it might even be a $100 cheaper in a month or so. Will wait for Optus to release it but if they don't I'll consider buying it outright somewhere else, then getting another phone on contract from Optus and selling the handset to try to make up the difference.
Andrew.
iMates
G'day All,
http://estore.pressd.com have the imates at $1299 and the iMate SmartPhones at $790 (in stock).
Cheers
Andy
Sorry to bang this thread again but does anyone know if Optus (Australia) is ever going to release the XDAII? I was at an Optus World Shop last week and the sales person had no idea.
Andrew.
In light of O2 Germany announcing that they will be releasing the wizard as the XDA Mini S, I have just spoken to O2 (UK)'s Marketing Dept & they Officially confirmed they will be follcwing suit, with a UK release date of late October or early November, (stock & supply pemitting, (haha, hehe), they also confirmed that it will be released in the UK under the brand name of the XDA Mini Pro instead of Mini S, GET EM WHILE THERE HOT BOYS (or not, as the case may be)
Regards & Best Wishes Ash'e.
October / November. Jeez that is ages away.
I'm now looking at the Tornado (i-mate SP5) but from looking on the Expansys site where you can pre-order this it is very very expensive.
O2 (UK) XDA Mini S Pricing
The Price of the XDA Wizard Pro looks like its going to be £199.99-GBP or less, sounds like a good deal to me, think I will leave the Tornado or XDA Phone well alone in light of that.

Don't get me started. I've had mine on order since August and I've been without a phone for a month :|
£474 actually: http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=125518
Actually not with an O2 Contract
Actually I need a new O2 contract, so instead of buying the I-Mate sim free version online, think I will hang on that little bit longer & get the XDA Mini Pro version of the HTC Wizard & save myself £300.00 GBP, since I need a new phone contract as I will need to make phone calls next year.
Always beer an early (wait for a good deal) adoptor, not an early, early take what ever deal I can, merely to get my hands on the latest kit first adoptor, you no I have always found what a difference a month can make when buying newly released tech.
Besides which my contact at O2 said that there is a chance that with the right contract it could even be free, (best for business 250 or above).
Oh on a foot note 02 business is offering completely free of charge GPRS access within reasonable usage limits (not more than 38 megs download a month).
All in all if you get a free Wizard and free GPRS access and some exclusive minutes every month for 18 months, sounds like a good deal to me.
Regards Ash'e
Where did you see unlimted data?
I'm buying a jasjar now w/o2 plan, not busniess, though I can, would love the data bit...
Its only available when you buy direct from O2 & when it is an XDA branded product & is available from the 15 of October, ethical usage does apply though.
Regards Ash'e
Are you sure that ethical usage does not apply?
So it would mean unlimited 3g? Skype calls and all? Unbelievable. Also, how do you know it is only available from the 15th vs the 3rd as o2 say? ( I spoke with o2 business today)
Not quite that easy
Although in theory Skype should work on GPRS, they say on the Skype site that there are problems with it, & Personally I have never managed to get it to work, usually lock in to a free WiFi Zone to use Skype.
Besides Which a Skype call on GPRS, would be highly bandwidth/megabyte intensive, which would be in contradiction of the O2 ethical usage limits.
However as to the date that is what I was told over the phone, could have moved it up my contact is one of my best mates from Oxford Uni who managed to become a director of O2 (lucky sod) but he does sometimes get his dates wrong he works in IT not marketing,
Nevertheless there is (within certain limits) free GPRS, which with a free XDA Mini Pro, & some inclusive minutes & texts I think its still a good deal and a great money saver,
Regards Ashe
Free Grprs - Data
This is the first i hear about this usage policy, but I thought the free data, whether 3g or gprs (I am getting the jasjar on an 02 contract for minutes, not data) was indeed only for o2 business users, and not the o2 35mb data only tarif (35GBp). I am confused as where the data is free.
You can have a data only business tariff, but that has a 35mb limit, besides, I don't know how you find unlimited data on o2??? (I get GPRS bills)
Let Me Explain
My buddy at O2 lets me know what the best deals are that are coming up, however O2 has a strict policy of not releasing any information to even its sales staff untill at max a couple of days before they become active, because if they did a lot of people would keep waiting for the better deals and this could makes there sales eratic.
As a customer they want you to take the best deal that is available at the time not what is on the cards in a months time.
O2 are trying to get there GPRS usage up and have come up with a plan to get more of there XDA business users used to using GPRS and the internet on there devices, knowing full well that once they get use to it even when the offer ends they will more than likely keep using it after experiencíng its advantages first hand.
I am just lucky that a director at O2 likes to keep me sweet because of certain aspects of my work and my long freindship with him, because of this I get the luxury of a little bit of pre-release information, thats all, believe me I always joke with him about giving me a little bit more for old times sake, I never get it though, although I do with a little bit of patience always get a good deal, he has never let me down yet, it was him that told me to hang on for the release of the XDA Mini Pro, and the unreleased release date for it, although O2 UK will corfirm that they definitely are releasing the XDA Mini Pro, my buddy just let me know when and what good deals would be attached to it.
Regards Ash'e
Softly, Softly Catchee Monkey.
In Light of some of the Sim Free prices I Keep seeing around this site, I think that maybe it might be worth waiting for some of the contract deal with the big providers.
Regards Ash'e
Sorry guys if this has been mentioned already, but for anyone that's missed this, what do you think of the 'magicians' successor, o2s' branded xda Atom?
Same form factor as the magician, but with WM 5.0, 128 Rom, on-board wifi, 262k QVGA screen, integrated FM Radio and a .....yes...2 megapixel camera upgrade!
I'm getting seriously confused. If we can believe these specs, it really throws a spanner in the works for me. I mean, I've pretty much decided on the Universal (just not sure on MDA Pro or o2s' Exec) but this 'Atom' thing is a serious upgrade from the old Jam and remains 'pocket friendly'. Opinions anyone...advice would be appreciated.
Anyway check this link and judge for yourselves.
read more here: http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001703,39095540p,00.htm
i don't have any "sources" but i called up 02 and they confirmed that it will be released on the 3rd and the mini s should be out by the end of the year as they have it on there system as a near future release
To jaythemagicain:
if that post of yours was in response to mine,...thanks alot! I'll need to check out both the Exec and the Atom side by side, in person, to get a clearer perspective on things.
I was seriously contemplating the MDA Pro due out hopefully end of this month,...but now, can't wait till the 3rd! What's a few more days, right?
The Atom is Confusing Me To:
I have to admit that all the recent news as regards the XDA Atom, is confusing me to, had almost decided on the Wizard or XDA Mini Pro as they are now calling it unlike XDA Mini S there calling it in Germany, now however, the XDA Atom slowley creeps in and confuses us all again, a few confirmed specs would be really usefull.
Even Jag at O2 has heard nothing about it yet & I don't even know if it is anything to do with HTC.
Has anyone got any updated specs to put us all out of our misery
Regards Ash'e
It could be that it's the same sort of thing like voda and orange did when they basically made the jam but reworked it and made the vpa/spv versions.Perhaps one of the mini s's,but the keyboardless version, and reworked?
The Phantom Atom
Been searching for hours on the Internet & making lots of phone calls to everyone I know that may have any information on the Atom but to no avail, and no definative answer or information looks like we are just going to have to be patient, as I have said in other post this is almost like searching for the Holy Grail of Smartphones.
Every body loved the size of the magician, but wanted 128 Megs, WiFi & WM2005, but not to many people wanted the extra size, the slide out keyboard that caused the extra size or to have a slower CPU. Well it appears that the elusive XDA Atom fullfills all of these criteria, but is more elusive than the Holy Grail. However you can bet a pound to a dollar, that it will not reach Europe, and definatly not the UK, perhaps the operators are afraid to many people will buy them and start using Skype on WiFi, and effect there profits, it would certainly be easier to sell to the youth market because of its form factor.
Perhaps HTC should be listening to some of the comments on this forum as I reckon they could have a world beating Iconic device if they only thought about it and listened to what people are saying.
Oh well I will get down from my Soap Box now, any comments Chaps
Regards Ash'e
It looks like the race to launch the first HTC Universal by a network will be won be Orange with their SPV M5000, who today publish two press releases. Although it's probably going to be a few more days before these hit the stores, Orange have said that the 3G tablet-esque handset has been launched today in the UK, France and Switzerland. It'll be fully available in from early October in stores for approximately £400 ($721) in the UK and €600 in France and Switzerland, before subsidy. Pricing however will be subject to the customer's contract, local market conditions and local market tariffs (per customer).
This handset, with it's 3G data speeds, 3G video calling, Wi-Fi, full QWERTY keyboard and flip / tilt screen should sell extremely well to business users and heavy data users alike. It should also be an ideal solution to those seeking to use just one device to organise their personal and business lives.
Get the full press releases below or direct from Orange.com with the links.

£400 before subsidy. That's a very good price.
Means it should be from £100 to £250 on contract then. Very good indeed.
Excuse me, but what the hell does "launch" mean these days???
I remember the good old days when somebody 'launched' a product, that meant you could go and buy it!
Orange have had the phone on their website for aaages as "coming soon"
Today they 'launch' it, its still on the website as "coming soon"
Nothing changed. They couldnt mean they are announcing it because its been on their website for ages.
So basically, launch means, urm, "hype with stupid press release" a product that everybody already knows about and wants but they still damn well wont sell you.
Nice. I look forward to many more product 'launches' that dont involce a product of any kind, or indeed any new information on said product.
O2 did the same thing a few days ago too.

I second that, called business information today and they say it coming soon, probably october and they dont understand the press release, it must be wrong.
It shouldnt be this hard to give a company money for a new cellphone!
I see on the Orange french site, but i can't see SPVM5000... Is still selled in FR?
I did a Google search for 'HTC "Touch HD"' webpages in the last 24 hours and this came up from the O2 Forums.

Now just diverging to the rumours that O2 will be getting this themselves, I was very surprised to hear, when I wandered in to my local O2 shop, that they were expecting them in in December. Touch HD directly from O2
Hi there - it's quite odd to see myself quoted here! (I'm PWJW in the above mentioned thread).
I should point out that the thread that this is from is about buying the phone from mobiles.co.uk (here > http://forum.o2.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=9555&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=180), which is offering O2 deals. The first two comments may well be referring to availability through this route, or not, I am not sure myself, which is why I raised my point, hoping for some clarification.
I spoke to someone in an O2 shop, and they said that they were aware of the Orange exclusive, but thought it was only until the end of the month, and that they (O2) would be getting it in in early December. Now I took that with a big pinch of salt, because I usually know more about handsets and release dates (due to these great forums) than they do!
I was actually so shocked that I did not ask the obvious follow up questions like "Are you absolutely sure about that?!" and "Can I have it in writing?", but there you go. I might give them a call in the morning and see if there is any "news"...
Fingers crossed, as this would save me some hassles I could do without.
So much for the Orange exclusive!!!
O2's network sucks though, 3G coverage is the worst of the lot... Why would you want it on O2?

lol! Well I'm already there, that's why
I'm not averse to switching network, but O2 works in my home, which is also where I work, and therefore where I need to use my phone 99% of the time. I also have personal reasons for never going near Orange, so that leaves my options limited, though I have seen the HD available on Vodaphone, which is tempting > http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/Brands/HTC/b509/n443/p3185.aspx
At the moment I am waiting to see one for real before making decision, but I know that I am only postponing the inevitable. At least if O2 get this themselves, then I can negotiate an upgrade from them - I'm on Simplicity at the moment, which I have to say is a cracking deal - £20pm, 600 mins + free bolt-on ("unlimited" web in my case).
Well, it's appeared on the Intranet in the past few days, Orange seem to think they've got the HD as an exclusive "...well into 2009!"...
its all a bit dodgy if you ask me, we know O2 Germany are running with the HD, we know Orange have some sort of exclusive deal but for how long remains at question, perhaps a get around for this would be the fact that Orange WOULD have exclusive rights to Touch HD, simply because 2 would make it there own so perhaps that might be the answer.
Ive heard that There is a XDA release in December but its not the HD, but as teh other Forums suggest it may well be headed O2 directs way.
All in all im somewhat confused, if anyone has any answers out there please feel free to enlighten us!
Its also worth noting that Both the XDA Ignito and Serra were registered names against there respected phones LONG before they actually released them, and since ive not heard a peep about a new XDA name its doubtful in my opinion that an XDA Touch HD will be here this side of new year.
Well I phoned a store in Hertfordshire, they said no idea. The girl searched on her system and came up with strange alternatives.
I phoned upgrades twice. First person said no idea. Second person gave me a lecture on how HTC phones are branded O2 XDAs. Yes.... Ok.

HTC HD on O2
Hi All,
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have got my HTC HD on O2. Completely unbranded and without any logos... Brilliant! The only website I found selling this on O2 last week was e2save!! all other websites have it on preorder on O2.
Hope this helps.
Kind regards,

xda flint or something, big arse pda, specs look ok but nothing fancy apart from a large screen and a good sizes keyboard. more like a ultra mini laptop than a pda.

This is very tempting for me too. But are Vodafone good? as i'm a T-Mobile user and I am getting bored with them and their phone releases. But I fear that it I leave they will get the phone so I am waiting till the beginning of next year to see whats happens.
This link tells me it's very near!
http://wmpoweruser.com/dell-venue-p...the-uk-on-the-6th-january-2010/#idc-container
Didn't realise it supported 3G T-Mobile USA roaming. That is definitely another point in its favour over the Samsung. This has put my decision making process back to square one...
Got a voicemail from Orange UK today - probably the upgrades team. "After investigations" they have no release date for the Venue Pro. It could either be in testing (e.g.: some Orange engineers are unnecssarily fiddling about with the phone/software/painting an Orange logo on it) or it may not be released at all.
Probably the former.
Hmm, I was just wondering about sniffing around the net if there would be any news about a european release...
Fingers crossed for some good news... Maybe I'll need to twitter Dellcares or Lionel...
Anybody else order the DVP from the Dell.co.uk website?
I put my order in on 2/3/2011. Expected delivery date is 10/3/2011.
Went back to check the website just now to see if the prices changed (they had free delivery until 2/3/2011... now that its 3/3/2011, I wondered if anything new was offered), and although the DVP product site is there, you can't get any further when you choose "Select this"... almost like its disappeared!... Ominous signs?
I'm taking a huge risk with the DVP, especially with the crashing issues I hear about. But we'll see. I've never seen the phone in real life, but most review websites says its the best Windows Phone device out (if it works 100% of the time). Either way, I checked the cancellation policy and Dell UK give 7 working days for a full refund. We'll see how it goes.
There simply isn't any other WP7 phone out there that I like in the UK. I would have gone with the Omnia 7, but with 8GB it's just too small. Ideally I would have chosen a Samsung Focus, but its not offered here.
One bonus with the DVP in the UK is it costs only £5 to get another full year warranty. Another omninous sign?! who knows .

I know I want WP7, but the current range of devices are pretty limited really. Other than the DVP, all the rest of pretty 'normal' I suppose.
I'm waiting it out, it only has been a few days yet. I'll update the board with my findings.
