To get your screen to stay on, you can do the following:
Tap 'Menu' -> 'Settings'. Go to 'Applications' -> 'Development'. check 'Stay Awake'.
The only thing that bugs me about this is that it will still dim the backlight after the duration of your screen timeout setting. So if you have it set to sleep your screen after 30secs, instead of sleeping your screen, it'll dim it. It's fine while driving at night but in the day it sucks. Still though, you can just tap your screen and it brightens up again.

Yes I realized this as well. Like u said its fine during night driving but at daytime u can't even tell its on sometimes depending the direction of sunlight. Also I realized that when I'm playing music using the HTC player it stops after every track. It will not change to the next track unless I press the now playing button on the bottom right. This only happens when its docked, and changes to the next track without a problem when not docked. Anyone else find a way to fix these issues?

Problem with baclight going off...

Hi.
Got my TouchHD had it for awhile now, however i have recently noticed...
I have the setting Ticked for;
Turn off backlight if device is not used for - 30seconds.
Turn off device if not used for - 2minutes.
So, after waiting 30seconds the backlight will go out, should i touch the screen, remove the stylus.... the screen will stay dim unless 1 of 2 things are done:
Turn device off then back on OR;
Goto Settings > Power > Backlight > Then make a adjustment to the slider.
This is rather annoying now.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Yeah, it's either designed this way or its a bug.
I got very used to tapping the power button with this device. Its now a habit to control the back light. I hate iPhone comparisons, but I did this on the iPhone as a habit to save battery. Definitely, not the same issue on the HD with its amazing battery life.

All programs close when screen goes black

Hi all.
I have this annoying problem with my Blackstone.
When the screen turns off everything closes down. It's really annoying if i'm using messenger or something and not look on it for 2 min it closes messenger down.
I know i can choose in battery setting not to turn off the unit if it's not used for a while, but i still like that the screen is turned off, but still working.
Can this be done??

Yes it can.
Go to Start/Settings/System/Power/Advanced and you can select the screen or backlight to turn off if device is not used for x mins on either battery or external power

Yeah i know, but it only turn the lights down, not turn the screen off. It's only if i choose to turn off the device the screen turns off.
I use gyrator to set up an event that turns the screen off without turning the device off when the stylus is inserted (you can modify the default gyrator behaviour which is to lock the screen when the stylus is inserted). If you want to be fancy you could set it up to turn the screen off if the phone is turned face down, you don't really need the screen on then anyway unless you're in the habit of looking at your phone above your face while lying on your back, or trying to use it while doing acrobatics in an stunt plane.

What i'm looking for is also a thing so the device isn't turned off when i push the turn on/turn off button on the top. I want to use this button to turn off the screen and not close down the programs.
This is what i'm looking for and i hope someone can help me

Just tried the screen off when phone is face down and it doesn't seem to be working for me either for some reason. But the stylus in event is working fine, just pop the stylus out and put it back in again and the screen goes completely off without killing the processes in the background (can still explore phone with active sync). I wouldn't want to mess with the power button as that is really useful to provide a proper device suspend when I want it.
I have a similar problem but with the GPS.
I have raised the question here, on some other forums and directly to HTC.
From HTC I got the answer that it is done by design to minimize battery drain and that they would have many angry costumers complaining about low battery life.
The only solution I know of so far is to use a 3rd party app.
I use "screenoff" and everytime I use the GPS I go to advanced-power and uncheck all the boxes.
When I'm done using the GPS I check the boxes again, otherwise I'll have to remember to turn the screen off manually everytime in "normal" usage of the phone.
I think it's sad though on such an expensive device not to have the option to run programs and hardware in sleep mode.
I'd rather find a solution where I can push the power button as usual and where I can have the boxes in advanced-power checked all the time.
I managed to get gyrator to turn the screen off by flipping face down, just needed to put the screen off command before all the rotation disable commands. Now if I want to disable the screen I just have to flip it face down for a second or so.
Thx for all your help.
But i found out that it's not only when the screen turns off everything closes. If i just leave it on home screen for like 2 min. everything also closes down.
I've heard from another forum that it's something HTC has decided to do to keep on the battery....
I don't know if there is anything to do here then??
Go to the start button, select settings, select system , scroll down and select power then the advanced tab and UNTICK Turn off device if not used for 2mins for both external and battery power.

I had a similar problem and only thing which resolved it was a hard reset!
I'm just testing it again to make sure. Have a track playing in the HTC music app and I'm signed in to messenger. Screen is off and I'm waiting for 3 mins to make sure.

That was going to be my next suggestion, really doesn't sound like normal operation to me. So hardreset and install one app at a time until you find out what is messing things up for you. 3 mins are up and track is still playing and I'm still signed in to messenger.
Thanks to a guy called Dawsonas I just found a program called Pocketshield.
It has an application permission feature:
"When this app is running override power off: just do screen off" (use this option for music players, GPS apps, loggers, IM, or any app that needs the device to stay awake). This setting will take effect either when "Power off on lock" or "Power off after 20 seconds" options are enabled.
Check it out

But do you guys think it could be some settings in the ROM? Should i try another one or what do i do when you say it isn't normal for the phone?

Screen not turning off

For some reason my screen just dims instead of turning off when I dont use the phone. If I press the hang up button it goes off like normal but if I just set it down it dims and stays on, draining my battery... Has anyone else experienced this?

I take it you've already checked your backlight settings in Settings, Power ?
Yes and I have done a soft reset as well. I'm not really a "phone guy" so I hope this is something easy to fix....
Hello,
The way I have my device setup to get round this problem is this:
Go to Settings>Sound&Display> then scroll down until you see Display then click on Backlight.
On the page that appears, scroll down to "On Battery Power". Here put a tick in the box "Dim Backlight..." and set the time you want to allow before this function kicks in (mine is set at 2 mins).
Next, move down to "Turn off Device..", put a tick in here, and then set how long you want the device to stay on for before it goes off (mine is set at 3 mins).
You can use whatever time settings you feel comfortable with. Please note that it is the setting for "Turn Device Off..." that will blank your screen for you. The other setting simply dims it and leaves it running, as you have said before.
If battery performance is an issue for you, take the tick off "Automatically adjust backlight" and put in your own settings. So here, for example, I have my backlight on battery permanently set at 30% and on External Power, 60%.
The screen is so big you get blinded at anything above 60% (well at least I do).
Hope this helps.

Desktop dock sleep mode(green clock)

Hello.
I have my desktop dock next to my bed and I'm wondering how to trigger the screen where I get the green clock moving around the screen?
I dont know how its triggered....
I have tried docking the phone while in sleep and while active. And even putting it to sleep while docked but no luck.
(I know there is a button on the clock screen where I can dim the display but I'd prefer just the green clock instead.)
I hope you know what I mean and can help me figure out how to trigger it when my phone is docked.
Thanks.
Long press the dim button on the clock screen will trigger the green/black mode.
Love you!!! Thanks. =)
Hmm.. Another follow up question.. The four navigation buttons at the bottom. How do I turn those off, if possible?

another question...how do you keep it from going into sleep mode with the green clock...i like the clock with the weather all the time, but it goes into sleep mode after a few minutes..
You can't... nor do you want to. That "green clock" is the screen saver mode. IIRC, it moves around on the screen so we don't get burn in.

Step 1: Put on pants and root.
Step 2: Download 'LEDs Hack' from market.
Step 3: Profit

Date does not change on Screen Saver mode...
Hi,
I'm not sure it's the CM Mod, since I only ran the stock ROM for 1 day.
When on desktop dock and screen saver is on (green screen), say it's 11:00 PM Thursday April 29.
The time stays current, but the the Date does not change on screen saver.
So 3 hours later, it's 2:00 AM, Still Thursday April 29.
The date only adjusts if I leave screen saver mode and go to dock mode.
Um... For my N1, the green/black clock turns on automatically after about a minute or so of the "clock" screen showing. Perhaps the light-sensor triggers it, not sure.. but I just launch the clock app, tap the "dim" button and in about 1-2 minutes it switches to green clock.
P.S: I don't use the google's dock, I use some chinese one with micro-usb, not the 3 "dots" connector.
I've been doing the same as darkdvr...launch the clock app, tap the "dim" button and in a few minutes it switches to green clock.
I've been using the ROM in my signature for about a week, and it never goes to the green clock automatically, which is kind of annoying. Anyone know why? I've asked in the thread for that ROM twice but no one even seems to acknowledge my question.
led hack
I had been using LED Hack on enom's 1.9 and it worked great to dim the 4 lower bottons. When I upgraded to Froyo 2.2 I wiped everything before installing and the 4 buttons at the bottom still dim when I put the phone in the doc. I just figured it was one of the improvements with Froyo. It's not that way for everyone? I never redownloaded the LED Hack.
I pointed it out weeks ago on the "Froyo changes" thread but no one seemed to notice. It's about the only major thing I wanted changed on my N1. ;-)
The clock app has 4 modes
Full with weather (default)
Dim with weather (press the sun symbol)
Green "LED" bright (hold sun symbol, or wait) <- this mode has the 4 leds lit
Green "LED" dim (press sun, then hold) <- on Froyo the 4 leds are off
The green led mode may timeout, to stop this just plug in a power source.

Slow to wake up

Have I got a dodgy phone or is this normal?
Pressing the power button to wake the phone up, it takes 1 - 1.5 secs to put the screen on.
Also, when finishing a call and taking it away from my face, it takes 2 secs to put the screen back on so I can finish the call! The other party usually ends the call before me.
Would some of you post your experiences so I know I am(/not) alone?!
(For reference, my Desire switches screen on after <0.5 secs.)
try doing a reset/format.
Mine is pretty slow to wake up as well, maybe 1.5 seconds. I haven't made any calls on it yet though.
Confirmed, take 1-2 s to wake up
Wake up is instant for me. But it does take a second or so after a call. I think that's so it doesn't cut you off by accident.

Mine wakes up instantly...
Wake up is instant for me aswell.
Thanks all.
Interestingly, as I wrote that post I was upgrading through Kies to the KDD(?) firmware (from KDA or something), and since then it seems to be a lot quicker to wake normally.
Maybe it's as simple as the f/w.
On mine when auto brightness is on I get a slight delay, no delay when manually set.

Iv hada bit of a delay, tried turning auto-brightness off, and it's fixed it.
So, a small delay for auto-brightness, just like you
I had this so turned off auto brightness and it sorted it but now I've rebooted and the delay is back again.

I am having the same problem, takes more than a second to wake up, already KDD firmware and turned off auto brightness, still
Well I always thought having a delayed wake up time is better than instantly. Like when the screen is off, it is in standby mode and when you wake it up, it will take about a second or two to wake up. Just like how a computer works. If your screen wakes up instantly, it would mean it is not in standby mode properly.
However for a phone, I would say a second or two is too long. Should be half of a second max.
(Speculation)
Might be widget related - the SGS2 seems to be loading up homescreen widgets before the lockscreen is shown, unlike other (well.. 1) devices that load the widgets only after you unlock the device.
Uhmm.. it's a long shot, but people who have the wake up delay - try removing all your widgets for a bit and testing to see if the delay vanishes.
Other long shot is that the log shows the brightness sensor is checked on wake up regardless of auto brightness set to on or off (at least, there is a log message mentioning it), so it might still be brightness sensor related.
what i wrote made no sense, discard
I removed the Auto Brightness config and it seems to wake instantly...not tested it that thoroughly though.
