Ok, I love my AT&T Fuze running 6.5. Unfortunately, AT&T is so expensive, I'm switching to Sprint. My wife gets a 23% discount off our bill. So anyway, here's my situation:
Bought a Samsung Moment, getting it tomorrow; but would love to be able to dual boot WM on the phone as well.
I read that they just released a dual boot menu to allow WM phones to dual boot Android and WM.
Why could android phones not be able to do the same thing? I know it's not the most popular idea, but I think both operating systems have their advantages and would love to be able to use both. Any suggestions?
Also, has there been any info about HTC releasing SenseUI for all android phones yet? I've tried to find some info, and hope they do so. Thanks guys!
Because Android is all about open source and winBLOWS/MONEYSOFT is NOT. Nobody wants that closed minded, closed sourced CRAP anywhere near our beloved androids! all the same good luck in your venture...

There is one thing...
How about playing other non hardware video codecs such as divx or flash video (instead of mp4 or 3gp), with TCPMP, which can't be done easily on android yet, AFAIK.
The simple answer is that WM ROMs are much, much larger than Android ROMs (sometimes ~2x) - too large to fit into the internal memory of an Android phone.
Let me start by saying I'm fairly new to Android, and that this probably should go in a general Android forum, but since I'm a Fascinate user, this seems appropriate to me. I've searched, but haven't found a real explanation, and I'm not one to take things as fact without a reasonable explanation.
So it seems like everyone is waiting for an official 2.2 release for the Fascinate, flashing 2.1 ROMs but not capable of upgrading to 2.2+; but I'm wondering why we can't just compile our own OS for our phones? Android is a Linux-like OS, and I know Linux users would never stay on an old version if a newer (better?) version was available. I'm talking down-and-dirty tweak-every-option-by-hand Slackware here. Is the source available for download? If so, why can't we do something with it? Is something in the phone completely locked and unhackable? Is it the fear of having a $500 paperweight? Is it difficult to regain Verizon network connectivity?
Again, forgive the noob question, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

There is currently work being done by jt, birdman, and the other skew of developers trying to develop a working AOSP version of 2.2/2.3. The biggest struggle that they have encountered was the RIL (Radio Interface Layer) binaries. Samsung produced some bogus complex proprietary binaries with no properly working source code. Because this phone is CDMA and not GSM, we can't simply use galaxy s files.
Anyways, the point is that there is work being done to bring it to our phone. They have a working AOSP 2.1 that is currently in alpha stage. Jt basically built his own RIL for this phone to get it working.
If this RIL works, we may end up with 2.3 sooner than later.

You obviously have not searched hard enough, as this has been discussed in many places. I would suggest you start by searching this forum (edit: or seeing the links and posts above).
I will say, however, that recent achievements by (edit: the developers mentioned above) have made your suggestion quite possible. If you want to get a taste of what is to come, see the aosp alpha sticky located in the development section. The rom still has bugs, but it is a giant step forward for the Fascinate.

I must add/point out that the work these guys are doing could easily pave the way for Cyanogenmod- and other well-featured roms to be compiled/ported and used on Fascinate as well.
I've read the above links, but they didn't really quite answer my question. I guess I'm wondering why a Linux-based OS isn't acting/being treated like a Linux-based OS.
Let's say I go out and buy a new computer today. I want to put Linux on it. I get the machine home, download my distro of choice and make an install cd. As I'm installing, I configure the installation either for my specific hardware or I can use a generic profile if my hardware isn't listed.
Now say a new version of the Linux kernel comes out. I can upgrade without having to wait for a version for my hardware. Or if I install MyDistro v1 when I get my machine, and MyDistro v2 comes out the next day, I don't have to wait for someone to develop a version to work with my hardware.
So my question is more of a why can't we upgrade our distro like other Linux variants? Is it because there's no generic replacement for the Samsung RIL? If I were to download the source and do a generic build, or even a specific one, I wouldn't be able to install it because...?
Sorry to be a pain, but I genuinely have no clue. Again, thank you for the insight!
2.2 will boot on the I500 just nothing works. If you would like to help http://opensource.samsung.com/
The source code can be found there. Please feel free to help the development along.
I suggest you read through the reply's to your question and pay special note to those bringing up the RIL as that seems to be the biggest hurdle right now.
I think maybe the answer you are looking for is that it is possible to do it, it's just extremely difficult because Samsung's open source is very shoddy and isn't based on AOS, which is what is used for most other phones.
Since the developers don't have a build that works, they have to work from the ground up with AOS and get every last feature on the fascinate working without using Samsung's code (TouchWiz, widgets, etc).
The links they gave you explain most of it but you have to sift through the posts. There is a dev named jt (amongst others) who is working on a ROM that is upgradable based on AOSP and it looks very promising.
edit: It's also worth noting that when I say "not based on AOS" I mean that it is proprietary software used by Samsung-only phones and is not coded by Google. It still, of course, is based on Android OS. It would be akin to a ROM coded by Samsung for their phones rather than generic ROMs that could be downloaded by other phones.
Perfect, thanks!
Try thinking of it as buying an Ubuntu laptop from dell. Sure its " Ubuntu" but not stock. It so full of bloat and badly written drivers that aren't supplied openly for the user that it would be hell trying get the latest version of ubuntu to run on it.

For clarification.... so I can wrap my brain around this. Is this situation kinda like having bought a new computer that's running an os, but has no installed device drivers and nowhere to download them from, so they have to be written by hand?
Edit: that last post came thru while I was writing this one, I think it basically answers my question...
So what the devs on here are trying to do is develop a "generic" profile that can work on our phone (as well as others?), creating a solid base to allow users to upgrade and change at-will without having to wait for official releases?
See, that's the part I'm having a hard time with. No generic profile built into the OS to use in the absence of a hardware specific one?

On a sidenote, I bought a Dell netbook witih Ubuntu. Didn't waste time with Ubuntu, but I chose it because I didn't want MS to get money from a license fee. Installed Mac OS X on it the day it arrived
Ya know, I tried to do the same thing with my inspiron 1525 notebook, with snow leopard 10.6.3 since I have a spare hard drive. Spent a whole day with numerous guides, trying this n that. Got it to actually boot to the desktop once, bit as I was putting the drivers in, it went into KP and from that point on, I could never even reinstall back to the desktop again.

They seem to post the same things over and over, of course this is also because people constantly ask when is froyo coming, and every time they say there is no definite date. It is coming soon that that is all they will say; yelling, moaning and crying isn't gonna make it come any sooner, just sit back and it will eventually come.
I just got an activation code for my HD2 and am wondering if I should install WP7 on it now, or should I wait for the update to be released in case any blacklisting takes place?
What do you guys think i should do?

i dont think it will matter much when you activate. when the update is released you are not forced to do it. you should wait for dev to release something and not jump into the MS update.
Activate now. From what I've read on the M$ support pages the update backs everything on your device up prior to it being performed, which leads me to believe it will flash a complete new ROM, so I highly doubt that our HD2s will work until the devs have released a ROM based on the update.
Thanks for the info guys, really good food for thought, think i am going to go ahead with flashing it tomorrow then.
Another question though, is I've only got a 4GB card at the moment (my 16GB one has on Android with an ext4 partition that I want to keep just in case WP7 isn't working good enough for daily use). If i later purchase a 16GB card do I have to re-activate?
I would like to know about the reactivation too cause I was wondering if a hard reset would make me have to reactivate my phone again

no, you would just install the card, reset the phone and it will partition and format the card for you. however, you will go through the setup process again.

i have flashed wp7 over 3 times and used the same activation code. no issues.
I've reactivated three times as well with the same code while trying to find the idea configuration for running WP7 and Android on the sd. I have a 16gb card and both OSs are working well. I use WP7 and the Desire HD 4.6 sd build for Android. WP7 boots very fast and the Desire HD isn't as fast booting but respectable, so I can which between the two as needed.
I prefer Android for games and apps since there are lots more games and apps for the Android. The Android build is also a much more fluid pinch zoom internet browsing experience and has flash support. But for ease of navagation, phone call quality, email viewing, and social media I prefer WP7.
WP7 is my boot up OS and I switch to Android as needed. Since both builds aren't perfect using them together this way I get the best of both builds and a solid user experience.
When I bought my HD2 a few month back it was only because I knew I would be able (thanks to the developers on XDA) to run both WP7 and Android Desire HD. I must admit in happened a tad sooner than I thought it would.
On yeah, if you want to use the MDJ Desire HD 4.6 build along with the MGLDR to run WP7 you will need a modified rootfs.img file. I found one by searching the stickies on this forum. If you can't find it I will attach the one I used.
I am such a noob to this phone that I don't even have it yet! I have been looking to find one to play with but I have a couple of questions because even after digging about the forums and searching, some of the info seems like it could be outdated and since there are multiple OS options, it is hard for me to find anything coherent.
I do, however, have lot of experience with Android phones (rooting, installing CWM, ROMS etc).
My main question is how difficult is it for switch between ROMs and OS versions? If I put Android 2.3 on it for instance, which looks like just running an executable and maybe installing a radio and spl, is it difficult to run WP7 on the phone? I guess what I am asking is it difficult to return the phone to stock after installing Android or WP7? I am used to rooted android phones where once you have the recovery installed, flashing roms is a piece of cake. I am going to want to switch it up a lot.
I saw a posting on Craigslist for a rooted HD2 that can use t-mobile's 4G network but I don't see any posts in the forums. Is that possible or is it just craigslist noise?
Is it possible to use the WP7 marketplace on this phone? I saw an old post that said it was not possible but it may have just been old information.
Thanks!

I've learned a lot in the past 6 weeks, since I bought this device.
It's very easy to root and to run Android: Flash SPL, Radio, Magldr, and then Android ROM. You can also dual boot from stock Windows Mobile 6.5
If you want to run WP7 Mango, you're options for Android become very limited. WP7 requires that it be installed on NAND. So Android would only be able to be used on SD card. The SD builds aren't necessarily as stable as the NAND builds, but are really good anyway. WP7 is also extremely picky about what SD cards it will work with. Cards may appear to be working well, but can pose massive battery drain. Trial and error is the only way to find the right card. I've got a PNY 16GB c4 and it works really well. Over 2x the battery life of my Kingston 8GB c2.
If you want to go back to stock ROM, it's easy to reflash from the bootloader and it wipes everything else out of the picture.
I'm currently dual booting WP7 and AmeriCan Android's 11/07 build w/o issue. It's easy to go back and forth. Installing WP7 and setting up for dual boot requires jumping through a few hoops, but I think it's totally worth it. I love the UI of WP7.
Yes, you can use marketplace. You'll need to connect your Windows Live ID to the phone and you'll get an error about activation. This is where you find the thread here about using the Windows Support chat function and they happily give you the activation code. You should keep this safe, as you'll need it each time you hard reset or reflash the ROM. Once Live services are active, the Marketplace works just fine.
The T-Mobile HD2 works on TMO's HSPA bands, but will only work on the 2G bands for AT&T. I had the TMO version for a few weeks, but decided I wanted to tether through Android, so I sold it and bought a Telstra HD2 from Australia and it works on AT&T HSPA.
Thank you so much for the response! Do you think it is worth trading my Samsung Galaxy S 4G for this phone? I am an HTC guy so the samsung isn't really working for me because there are not many ROMs for it.
That I can't answer, as I don't have an educated opinion. I just got the HD2 so I could play with WP7 and skirt around AT&T's data plan requirements.

Honestly, don't trade your Samsung Galaxy s 4g for this phone, but if you want to experience different types of Roms like meego,ubuntu,win7,etc and to experience htc sense then only trade your old mobi. And for your information only Android froyo runs perfectly on this phone while all other versions of android are in beta! Battery life is Bad!
My point of view is that its really easy to install roms.
I have installed Tytung 3.2a the best one^^
Thank you everybody for the information. I think I may just try to pay cash for one rather than trade my Galaxy S and then maybe sell both to upgrade my phone next year.
I like WP7 but I am pretty well indoctrinated into the Android ecosystem and I worry that I might end up with a handset that has battery issues. As an early adopter of Android, I know how frustrating it can be to have a phone battery that won't last more than a few hours.
Concerning battery, my hd2 last all the day from 7am to 10pm running Android.
So, to me, no real battery problem.

Please don't flame me for asking this question, I've read a lot, but still have not found a definitive answer for this question.
Is there a fully functional android rom (preferably SD) gingerbread or ics, that has everything working ok with no bugs, just like an wm 6.5 rom?
I'm asking this because I'm pondering buying an used HD2 for some android goodness, and can't completely decide if it's the way to go. Since I would like everything to work smooth and stabile, for instance like my stupid iphone 3gs (please don't judge, got it as a gift years ago).
I thank you all for your replies in advance!
p.s. before this crap i had a diamond, tried probably all the roms from 2009 onwards, bricked it only twice

Does the digitizer brake easily on HD2?
Digitizers on HD2 are notorious for breaking! My original HD2 which I had for three years needs a replacement. I love HD2 so much I replaced it with another one running Ansar's WP 7.8 and Boxmax Android in NativeSD. WP 7.8 works wonderfully and is my daily use OS. No problems whatsoever. My Boxmax Android is old and I need updating to its latest build but I find I rarely use it so I always put off on doing that.
By the way, I don't know if anybody has asked u yet but how'd you come about with that handle "rape_artist"? Just curious....

For practical use, yes.
If you look deep enough, no.
Because the HD2 was originally a Windows device some new drivers are simply not available for it.
Having said that, the Typhoon Gingerbread ROM had *everything* working. If one does not need the latest JellyBean ROM it will work flawlessly. The only things that will not work are a few newer apps written for Android 4.x and up, such as Apex or Nova launchers.
The newer ICS and JB ROMs work well but again, you can find a few 720p videos which will not play right. Netflix also has issues and will not run.
If you figure out which exception you can live without the HD2 can be a good choice.
