I see the ADB entry in Device Manager and the device is listed as HTC Dream. If I uninstall this and connect the phone it will mount and the drive will show up.
If I use Windows update to install the HTC software the phone will no longer show up...what's going on here?
For great justice!!!1
Ditto..Real problem here..
Just noticed this today. Two different computers with two different cords, no USB mount.

I've been trying to get anything to recognize my Hero on my PC for the past few days.
What I've tried:
Installing HTC Sync
Installing Android SDK
Installing the HTC HERO DIAG drivers
Doing ##DIAG# and not doing it.
...And all different combinations of those. The problem is I can't get QPST, CDMA Workshop, UniCDMA, or QXDM, etc to recognize it. The Hero synced to the HTC Sync a couple times, but nothing else. It won't even assign a COM port on the computer.
The phone is also rooted, which, I wouldn't think would make much difference, but I'm running out of ideas here.
Any help is really appreciated.
Did you install the regular HTC drivers ? Go to your device manager and see if it says android phone when its plugged in if its there tell it to update driver and point it to the folder called HTC drivers located in the HTC sync program directory.
I tried to do that but the driver wizard said that it could not find any drivers that were better than the ones already installed. (or something to that effect)
EDIT: Ah! I don't know what happened but it appeared on COM5 as "HTC Diagnostic Interface". That may be what I needed. We'll see.
I get the same thing, says "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date."
"HTC Dream Composite ADB Interface" <--???
Exactly the same for me.
Device not recognized, Remove and reinstall HTC Sync and manually selecting drivers, Device wiping and trying again, using a different USB port, using a different cable, reinstalling windows!!!!!, using a different computer, Pulling out my hair!!!!!
Nothing works!!!
However, It did used to ask for mounting and unmounting the SD when plugged in but it has NEVER found HTC sync on my PC.
Now, all I get is Charging battery on the Hero and device not recognized on the PC.
Device manager politely tells me "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"
My system is Windows 7 X64 and my Hero Has run both the shipped ROM and now a cooked 2.1.
Please help me!
I have never been able to sync my Hero on any of my Win7 machines. I have been able to sync sporadically with my work XP Pro SP3 machine though. However, since flashing the AOSP 1.6 rom, HTC sync isn't recognizing my phone anymore. I can however mount the SD card.
Problems connecting Evo to PC
Same problem, but on EVO... Anyone ever figure it out??
I should elaborate I suppose lol... Everything *worked* fine, and then suddenly, appearantly for no reason, it just stopped... Device manager now calls the HTC diag driver an unknown usb device and gives the same warning message as above. And when I try to update the driver, gives the same message about it being up to date...
I have not been able to get ADB to work on my phone since the first time I flashed 2.2, when plugged in it will do the "do you want to turn on usb storage" message and it works fine.
You all might want to try installing the android adb drivers. Its a well know issue with the htc drivers. If you click on my avatar and go to my post you can find my thread on how to install adb on windows 7 32/64 and xp. Adb works fine for me and sync as well. The adb drivers might help out. Well good luck.
Edit: Running Aosp's 3/26 gb build RA1.7 Jason m's 806 kernel kifno build prop tweak -mp
Yea it's Me Again With The
Modified Hero

more than likely it is your usb cable has been damaged.
i had the same problem, i went to my provider and got a new usb cable for it. (they gave it to me for free, no questions) no more problems at all, works like a charm.
i still have the old cable too, it will not recognize the hero on the computer. in fact if i plug the cable in without the phone, the cable itself actually comes up and says unrecognized device. but it works great for charging.
I've tried installing the HTC Sync software by itself. I've tried manually creating prog files(x86)\htc\drivers\vista64 whatever. I've tried restarting the phone, and the computer. I've tried different memory cards, different USB cables, different USB ports, it REFUSES to work.
Windows 7 will say "Installing/Installed USB Mass Storage Device," the phone shows up in devices/printers and device manager, but I can get no further, and I cannot access the memory card or the phone storage in any way shape or form.

To get into the SD Card, are you pulling down the "Window Shade" and selecting USB Connected > Mount
To Sync do the same thing and select HTC Sync?
I don't mean to point out the easy questions I just noticed the low post count and figured you may be new. This stuff isn't exactly automated.
Under your device manager, is your phone called "My HTC" under "Android USB Devices"?
You need to make sure that you right click your phone after connecting it, and update the drivers manually to the Vista x86 / x64 drivers.

You also might try an older version of HTC Sync. I had to use an older one on my work laptop before Windows 7 would properly recognize it. I'll find that version # when I get to work and let you know. I think it had a 4 in it, like maybe 2.0.4. The newer versions had issues with 7, not sure if they still do, but it's something to try.

^^ what he said.
Also, I checked, and the version I am using is HTC Sync 2.0.8 downloaded straight from HTC's sprint hero website.
I know I've read in the past though, that the USB drivers from 2.0.4 worked better or something like that, so I seem to remember installing that fully (choosing both sync and USB to install) and then uninstalling, keeping the drivers intact, and then installing 2.0.8 and NOT choosing usb driver.
Do some reading if 2.0.8 doesn't work for you, and maybe you'll retrace the steps I took.
Here is what I did to make it sync with HTC Sync 2.0.18:
1) Connect the HTC Hero and let Windows install the drivers
2) Go to Devices and Printers
3) Right Click 'Android' and go to the Hardware tab
4) Click the ADB Interface and then click Properties
5) Click update Drivers
6) Click Browse My Computer for Driver Manually
7) Click Let My Pick from a list of Device Drivers On My Computer
8) There should be two listed, click My HTC and hit Next
It should sync after that.

This was my problem. I wasn't pulling down the damn window shade and telling the phone to mount the stupid volume.
*punches wall*
*strangles small furry animal*
Thanks guys!
One other interesting detail... When I turned on USB debugging, the HTC Sync software actually worked properly and did what it was supposed to do...
My phone doesn't mount when plugged in to a PC
USB debugging is switched on but does not activate when plugged in.
The phone shows its charging but that is it.
I am able to access the SD card normally on the phone but there is no indication of the phone being connected when I plug it into my PC.
I have tried;
plugging it into different PCs
different cables
the unbricking process, several times (even though it doesn't really apply, my card is visible in Android)
flashing to different roms with a wipe in between
Any ideas?
I can't figure it out.

me too same problem after updating to froyo ... but i'm different than you the it connect after a while .. but now for example when connecting the phone to my car it doesn't read it because it take too long to connect .. any help ?
Have you got a working set for drivers?
This was my main problem, I used to just have to play around with the USB and eventually it would mount after about two or three reboots.
I installed HTC Sync & updated drivers and so far it's been working the way it should be, even if you don't use HTC sync just download it and grab the drivers & then replace files with the the
Code:
HTC Hero driver for 32-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_32.zip
HTC Hero driver for 64-bit Windows 7: HTC_Driver_64.zip
That sorted my problem but not sure if it works for everyone.
(I'm using Windows 7 [64bit] Ultimate)

I think you are right. it happened to me and it was because drivers.... once windows finalized to install the drivers is sure you will get the option to mount as drive...
Sent from my HTC Legend
No its not the drivers. My PC still connects successfully with the phone when in recovery mode. That's how I was able to complete the USB unbrick process.

Hi Guys,
i have connected my Hero with different cables with different computers on different driver versions. It charges battery, but there is no USB conncetion. Yesterday it still worked. I think that this is maybe more a hardware fault as a software fault. ATM i don't have a microSD Card Reader so backup my data and USB Mounting doesn't work anymore.
I use FroydVillain 1.5 and i don't want to try to factory set, because on the last restores i just could restore per usb and not per recovery console.
Does anybody know about this problem or has a good idea?
After i switched off the phone and connected, my device manager on windows tells me unknown device and says an error code that device reported an errors and deactivated 'cause of that.

Install HTC Sync
Hi tried this already with 3 different versions of HTC Sync
Uninstall HTC Sync, use USBDeview to remove the usb drivers for your phone.
Restart
Check the drivers are removed with USBDeview again
Install the latest version of HTC Sync from HTC's website
Restart
Plug your phone in
N.B. If you're using a custom rom make sure you have "Unknown Sources" checked in your application settings & "USB Debugging" checked in Development settings. These settings might help though I think the second one is for adb access and the first is for installing apps from apk files. Worth a shot though.
I haven't hooked my phone up to my PC in months, but wanted to update to Froyo. My phone was rooted, and I removed a bunch of bloatware manually. Then I removed root.
Anyways, I have two PCs, and I've tried installing drivers from Samsung (1.3.8) and drivers from EasyTether (1.3.8.5) and in desperation even one from an SMS 'marketing' company (1.4.0).
None of them ever allowed me to mount. A minute after plugging my phone in, I get a message from Windows that my device has malfunctioned. I'm running Windows 7 x64, up to date.
I remember having trouble with this before, but now I just can't get it to work at all. Perhaps some remnants from one of these drivers is still around, but I don't see anything obvious.
So, how can I fix this situation and mount my phone over USB?
Thanks
Try a different USB cable.
have you tried using all usb ports? uninstall all drivers and start from brand new....i had to do the same thing today in order to root my phone
