Google Voice Battery Drain? - Epic 4G General

The past few days I've lost about 4 hours on my battery life. From 12-14 down to about 8-9 per full battery. The only thing I've really changed is I've started using google voice. Anyone else think gvoice causes severe battery drain?
Also, can I delete the regular voicemail app because it still seems to be running as well.

is the service running?

I doubt GV uses that much battery. Why don't you go back and see whether you get 12-14 hours?

Which service are you referring too. Well, both android voicemail and google voice (and its three or four related services) were running.

Yeah, that's not a bad idea.

turn off those services see if it helps

Have always been signed into GV since day one and get the same amount of battery life. GV doesn't drain battery life.
I've stopped using the Gmail app because I don't like the silly interface too much so I turned off mail sync. Now that's helping with battery life a bit.

If you've had it turned on from day one then how do you know it doesn't drain battery life? Same battery life as what?
Is it possible to still use my other voicemail for my normal number and only use google voicemail for my google number?

same here dude! I found this post searchin on google the key words: google voice and battery drain.
I' m on htc desire hd and google voice is the only thing I can think of, when I see my device die after 20h of normal usage. I don't know exactly how the app works yet, but I am sure it uses a lot of 3G and maybe wi-fi when available. I can see anomalies in my 3G usage mostly.
It's a nice service, but god!

Just about any app that you have to sign IN to will drain your battery even if you don't have any visible app or service running. It's better to sign out each time. The same goes for these: Google Lattitude, Facebook, Amazon MP3 (this one was a bugger to find...had forgotten I had signed into this), Amazon App Store, Qik, etc. If you don't believe me, sign out of everything and check your battery drop afterwards!

GV had a huge issue with battery drain in a previous version. I assume you're on the latest release?
I suspect it uses a similar amount of battery life as gmail push email, adjusted for use of course. It may be worth your time to disable it for a day and keep usage otherwise constant to confirm that it's the problem. Your drop is battery life is significant, as if the CPU min speed was crazy high or the device never went into deep sleep.

I noticed this as well an thus phone and my other one. Its the Google apps (especially Google+ and Maps) that open and run on their own but unfortunately I am seeing it on Google Voice as well

do you guys know how to disable auto push for the google voice app? since i use the sprint integration with google voice, every text message gets pushed to the phone via internet which i do not need since i would rather text through GoSMS.
The only setting i find is a general background sync for all apps, not just google voice. Thanks!!

i just have intalled GV on my Samsung Glaxy Ace with Rom Infinity based con cyanogenmod 7.2 and i realized thar my cellphone charges for about 2 hours and get the 100% but it drains too fast, the normal charge time used to be 3 hours but since i've installed GV my device losses lots of battery .
Sorry for my english

Reducing idle battery drain on Froyo ROMS

I've been investigating how to get rid of that pesky background idle battery drain on 2.2. The biggest improvement I've found is from disabling Google location services. With this disabled, my background drain is about 1% per hour. Enabled I see 4-8% per hour. This drain mainly seems to kick in when not connected to wifi AP.
This observation holds true for stock ED01 and sc 2.9.2. GPS still seems to work reasonably well with Google location services disabled, bit it may impact you.
Let me know if anyone else sees the same. Thanks!

Lots of people have commented on worse battery life with froyo. If you're one of those, and its idle drain, then try this out.
If not, mind your own buisness. It definately makes a difference for me. Tested / confirmed multiple times!
Google Location Services does not do anything on its own, until an applications calls for it.
Disabling Google Location Services is like draining your gas tank because it has a hole in it.
Sure, it won't leak anymore, but not only can you not use it, you also will have the problem the next time you fill up.
Fix the problem, don't hide it, imo. You have an app thats draining you if turning off Google LBS fixes your issue.

A constructive comment! Thank you. Before disabling Google location services on stock ED01, I killed every background service that would stay killed, and turned off all widgets and updates. I still had the high idle drain. If what you say is true, it appears there is something systemic in stock 2.2 ROMS abusing Google location services.
Watching cpu usage over time with system pannel and battery state didn't show any suspicious usage.
When using sc 2.9.2, I'm fairly certain the idle drain / location services is only an issue when Google latitude is enabled.
This certainly can't be indicative of ed01 roms or everyone would be screaming to high hell about it...I leave Google location services on all the time and am completely fine battery wise
Sounds like you have a app installed that is using the Google Location service installed, sounds like you need to a factory reset and run a day or so with no apps installed, right now I am running on stock self debloated ED01, and I always have GPS and Google location services turned on, and I have gotten the best battery life I have ever seen on this phone. Not sure if you use Google Latitude, but I have seen that cause some drain on phones.
Its one of the big double edged swords of Android, the ability to have true multitasking can really hinder your battery and this is proof, especially when it comes to a service like Google location services.
Just a thought, maybe if you quit checking your battery usage so much, it might get better.

Come on now, dudes having a problem and trying to help. Just because he is wrong doesn't mean the thread has to go this direction. Instead perhaps it can be used top help him find the true cause, aswell as any one else with similar findings.
Oh and only quoted you cause I thought it was pretty damn funny.
After more testing, I have some interresting findings.
The idle drain I described earlier along with dependence on Google location services holds true while I'm at work. This is a location where I get 0-1 bars of cell signal, and android reports about 60% time without signal. When I'm at home and in good signal area, I can leave Google location services on all the time without high idle drain. Now I know why most people weren't agreeing with my observation.
Now then, to the root of my problem when I'm at work. I know everyone says Google location services is mostly passive and only consumes power when an app is polling for location. However, I'm starting to wonder if this is true for the cell tower portion of location services. Could android be doing some extra background tracking of towers when location services enabled? Or could the phone radio be put in a more aggressive "find a freeking tower at all costs" mode? My experiments at low signal level would seem to suggest so.
Anyone with info or similar test results please let me know. Thanks!

Do you have a WiFi connection when at work (and it setup!), or are you using 3G only? If so, that could be your cause. Google Location Services periodically does send data to Google (read the agreement!), so if it's trying to send off data when you've got pretty much no connection, it could very well explain why it'd be causing such a huge drain on your battery (causing the radio to power up to full power, and continually fail to send your location data off, forcing retries).

Yea, I suppose that's possible. I don't have a wifi connection at work currently. At home I do have wifi, but my wifi sleep policy is set for screen off. To test I did disable wifi alltogether at both home and work, and it doesn't change my idle drain issue. The theory that Google location services is desperately trying to send data over a partially working cell connection does make some sense.
What I've found so far with ed01 froyo has been vastly improved in most regards including battery. My idle drain is almost nonexistant with the comm.rom 1.2 & nemesis' 1.3 kernel with uv/oc to 1.3ghz. It only eats battery when I'm actively using it & there it is more aggressive than eclair depending on what I'm doing. I have google services & standalone gps always on & never use wifi only 3g and easily get 16+ hrs on a charge.

After upgrading to Evilfascinate 3.x, I found if I left my WiFi on and my 3g my battery would barely make it through the day... Now I only turn them on when needed and I am running a couple of days before I put it back on the Charger...
I have done the same with GPS, only turn it on when I need to know where I am or where I am heading...

"sns_periodic_wakelock" killing battery

Hey,
I'm running stock nexus 4. I have been having terrible 8 hour battery life with "Android OS" taking up all the battery in battery status. BetterBatteryStats tells me that "sns_perioidic_wakelock" and "sns_async_ev_wakelock" is using up most of the battery. See attached. Any idea what apps are causing this?

I'm pretty sure I've seen those wakelocks when making a lot of phone calls. Seems likely related to cell radio use some how, but that's just a guess.

Just checked mine and those wakelocks are really low today despite several phone calls, I've been on wifi all day though. The right way to figure those wakelocks out is to download the kernel source from one of the devs github and do some searches through the source to see where those wakelocks are logged. You might also search the battery impression thread in general, some smart folks have dissected many kernel wakelocks in there. Seems weird that you would have them in airplane mode.

I have the exact same issue. Wakelocks/Android OS killing my battery (Android OS usually 45% or higher when it should be my screen that is the biggest battery sucker).
I barely use my phone to make phone calls as well. I'd say 1 call every 2 or 3 days.
Same exact wakelocks here. I made 0 phone calls. There is defiantly something up.
I had these two wakelocks too and it turned out to be my live wallpaper that was causing it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35277041&postcount=20
Same wakelocks on my N4....
Solution in my case, delete widget locker....... My Nexy sleeps again:angel:
exact same situation: N4, sns wakelocks killing battery, phone not deep sleeping. culprit? Shake 'n Rotate! app. so add that one to the blacklist as well!
Are any of you running stock kernel and ROM?

Im Running stock kernal and Rom and i still get sns_periodic_wakelock and sns_async_ev_wakelock Does anyone have any idea what they are or what causes them or how to fix? They seem to be on the whole time my phone is on and they suck battery crazy not as bad as most but my android os is always 2nd battery use to my screen or more depending on how i use it and it sucks cause i know i would have pretty awesome battery life if these were fixed or gone. I appreciate any help!
Apparently you can also add: lightflow vibrate on pickup feature and adding a widget to the lock screen..
PowerManagerService and sns periodic wakelock are my main culprits but I'm not sure these numbers mean there's an issue or not...
I just checked BBS for todays use and I have on 9h use 4h on sns_periodic_wakelock. I have been using DashClock on my lockscreen. I will remove that and post back later to see if that helped.:cyclops:
Hmm can anyone say if this looks problematic?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yes it does look problematic.
Basically sns_periodic_wakelock kept the device from sleeping for almost three hours.
I have the same issue and don't know what's causing it.
EDIT: Apparently live wallpapers do.
Just writing back to tell you guys how it went. I removed DashClock from my lockscreen and that wakelock seemed to be gone for a few days.
I then later updated the app, and just by updating it, I think it caused the wakelock. This time I'm uninstalling and checking if it comes back again.
Is there a known list of apps suspected of causing this?

Sns is related to facebook. If you use Titanium backup, go to apps and you can see a blue icon with a letter f on it that looks like facebook letter and labelled sns. Uninstall that and your lovely nexus 4 will enjoy its sleeeeep....

[SOLVED] Google Services Battery Drain... WTF

I tried the removing account account and then signing back in... But to no avail. Is this an MF9 issue or a Google issue? Either way it's getting really annoying :/ this is killing my battery life
EDIT(ALSO SEE POST #11): After some searching last nite and early this morning I think I found the root of the problem... It is the Google Play Store version 4.1.6 that is the problem! I upgraded to version 4.1.10 (i have no idea why Google made 4.1.10 a newer version than 4.1.6 lol) and the drain is near gone. Yesterday I got 8hrs of battery life with 2 1/2 hrs of on screen time and today I got 17 1/2 hrs of battery life with 3 1/2 hrs of on screen time with Google Services only taking up 4% of my battery! Now what I did was go into manage apps and clear all data from Google services framework, then I downloaded and installed the new Google Play Store (search it on Google it's very easy to find v4.1.10) cleared the Google services framework again and rebooted and bam problem solved! Lemme know if this works for you!
**Also if a mod could please move this to the general section that'd be greatly appreciated!**

For some, removing Google acct and then signing back in works....for others it doesn't. The only other option is a factory reset, which has been reported taking care of the problem by those that the first method didn't work for.
The only thing that worked for me was shutting off Google Now. Those cards are nice but it has to constantly ping your location. As soon as I shut off that server, problem was solved.
I did a factory reset and it did not fix the problem. I just disable WiFi networks location. Only thing guaranteed to work. Then Google now still works for the most part just leave your GPS on.

Looking at your picture. you have terrible signal strength. All of these google services are constantly updating and accessing the network. If you have bad signal this will result in a lot of slow updates and lots of battery usage. I have MF9 and have every feature this phone has turned on including Google Now and I have great battery life. I take my phone off the charger at 7:00am and put it back on at around 11:00pm, usually with at least 35% battery left. But, if i go to my brother in laws where I barely get a sprint signal and the phone is constantly switching from roam back to sprint my battery life goes to ****. Remember your phone lies to you about 3g, unless you have a mod installed that will display when you are on a 1XTT signal, and when you are on 1XTT you suck down battery from full to 0% in a matter of hours unless you disable all apps that need to access the internet.

But was it 3G, or 1XTT? Unless you have modded it there is no way to tell. Also, the bars are the 1XTT signal (voice) and has nothing to do with 3G or LTE signal strength. In fact, you can be receiving your voice from one tower and your 3G data from a different tower.
With that being said, how did you update to MF9? The dirty way, which is to install things separate and piecemeal? Or did you do the official upgrade by returning to stock MDL and either taking the ota or installing the official update in the stock recovery?

Google Play confirmed culprit on my device. I updated to 4.1.10 and today Google Services went from 26% of my battery use to 6% and battery life was much improved. I also cleared data and cache on multiple apps and deleted my Google account in order to get Google Play to update apps again. The procedure I followed was as follows:
1. Installed Google Play 4.1.10. New Play Store worked fine but gave an "error retrieving information from server" message when I tried to update any apps.
2. Deleted data + cache and force stopped :
Google Play Store
Google Play Services
Google Services Framework
Hangouts
Market Feedback Agent
3. Deleted Google account
4. Rebooted and re-added Google account.
Better Battery Stats also reported a big jump in time the phone was in Deep Sleep. Maybe it's my imagination, but a well rested S4 seems much snappier when it wakes up
I have done a few of the things listed here and it did not seem to work. So last Friday I deleted Maps as a system app (both files, the apk and odex). Then went in to the market and installed installed Maps that way. The highest I have seen google services then is 4% of my battery.

Stock ROM Google Services eating battery

So I've been using this phone for a little over 3 weeks now, and I am loving everything about it (except being stuck on MF3.. thanks Hash!)
My question is how do I stop Google Services from eating so much battery? It seems that whenever the play store decides to update apps.. or sometimes just no reason at all it decides to take up a chunk of the battery?
I'm quite happy with the battery life on the stock ROM.. but when google services starts to take over my phone while it's in my pocket it sucks any advice? Here is my most recent battery life with GPS and WiFi used when needed.. normal day but it had 37 minutes of wakelocks due to google services.
Thanks

if youve used google maps before it turns on automatic gps, so you gotta turn that off too. for that
youll have to open google maps>google location>then turn off acess location
there are a number of factors that play along it as well. ie: nfc, and the samsung features.

Google Battery drain

Got my mate 7 A few weeks ago. Love it. Getting awesome sot (8.5) the last charge mainly using mobile data..
But today google contact sync is draining so much battery. I've exported and deleted all contacts from google. Disabled back up my phone in settings and even disabled the app in settings and it still opens... I don't really want to have to root it. Any ideas I may not have tried?
Also wonder,my phone is rooted though, well, didn't want to freeze any Google services but some features like backup system is stubbornly running even after disable in settings. Don't know any good medicine from this issue.

Yes I know that. The thing that drives me crazy is that I have no control over running background apps, like backup, that were disabled via Google provided interface. This is type of cheating to have an interface that doesn't do much.

I've got same ... even more 40mAh
you know what you can do go to setings -> google account -> tap account where numbers are synced from -> disable sync contacts
see if that helps
I froze with TB google app, then defrozed it and converted to user app, also didnt enable google now service, after all I have drain 10% per 6 hours at night, while phone is on extreme battery mode and just laying on the night stand without anyone touching it. Screen on time is impressive but battery drains while screen is off.

Mine is also draining too much energy while screen is off. Like 100% to 55%!! All in a matter of 10 hours and a half.
Have you fixed this particular issue yet?
Please see my case here:

It did solve the problem temporary, however my phone died (not related reason) warranty replaced the phone and new one, uprooted, doesn't have that issue any more.

How did you fixed it temporarily?
But the one million dollar question is: How much battery is lost while idle overnight?
This is the real question I think, because in all my tests, no matter the build version, I have got l least 5 hours of SOT (17 hours of use in total), which is not bad,
but most people get at least 7 hours SOT (in some 30+ hours) I guess I use it too frequently.
So, that would be the main question.
Please, do try to answer and tell us. Thank you!

I have already told it in this discussion, I have frost (later removed actually) google app system application, and fresh installed it from the market as user app.
As I said earlier though, now I use unrooted phone with locked bootloader, in completely original state (except I use tsf shell and disabled all unused system apps) and no longer have any problem with battery.

Guys I noticed that now phone drains battery faster when just browsing internet..
Had 20% and after 10 mins got 15%
Why it is so draining .. it is just browsing pages.. no video no audio at all..
