[CLOSED/G2] 3G/HSPA+ Issue

Well, not sure if anyone else has had this issue with their G2 yet, but I got mine today and found that the 3G/HSPA+ (I'm in Austin and we're an HSPA+ location) doesn't work. Edge is working fine, wireless works fine, but I had no hi speed data.
Spent a while on the phone with T-Mobile and they tried everything. Swapped SIM cards for the new one, master reset, checked my coverage area, checked my account, etc. No dice. Phone has been deemed defective. Grrr...my brand new G2 birthday gift. Oh well, replacement is being shipped out.

oh that just sucks... oooooooo i need to get home and open mine also now! and pray for the H lol... hspa+ area also

I live in charleston SC, we do not have HSPA+ just 3G. My phone shows the "H" when on 3G, how are ever going to tell if we are on 3G or HSPA+?

The "H" means you definitely have HSPA. The only way you'll know the difference between HSPA and HSPA+ is probably the speed. Unless there's something in the testing menu that shows you the difference.

it should actually say "H+" if you in a HSPA+ area

The user manual actually says that it will show the H if you're on the HSPA, HSPA+, or 3G network.. so I don't know how we'll be able to tell unless we speedtest it.

I don't notice any speed increases from the g2 compared to my nexus one regarding the data network

You probably won't until they throw the switches on in all areas of your town. only like 10% of the towers in mine actually use HSPA+... the other 90% at still on HPSA/UTMS. Give it more time...

This is the one single aspect about the G2 that kicks the N1's butt. The 3G connection and radio reliability is awesome! Everything else is a wash for me. I'm actually starting to like the keyboard a little, too.

Fascinating... I think they are shipping some of us Desire Zs stamped T-Mobile by accident... 1.5GB NAND, no HSPA+... Seems to fit.

Oh wow, I feel retarded. In my defense, it's not marked on the map! I hope the Greenville/Anderson towers reach Clemson!

Telus 3G icon and H icon
If I can ask for one more clarification.
Up here in the Great White North I am with Telus who has HSPA+ coverage in my area : Montreal (no 2G available at all)
The icon on my Desire shows 3G unless I am accessing data then it flashes the H with the up and down arrows.
I am assume this is correct and the "H" only makes an appearance when it needs to access the data network. The rest of the time it stays as 3G
Important today as they had major connection issues and the H was not appearing even when I was trying to browse or update Facebook.

Yeah. I've seen speedtests on youtube and the G2 has been so disappointing. I was all excited to see 8Mb download speeds then it gets... 600Kb? WTF is that?
Heck, in one video the dude tests the G1 and G2 side by side in Speedtest and the G1 won! This is enraging! HSPA+ is T-Mobiles biggest marketing tool right now yet they made no effort to even see if it worked.

Does G2 display hspa+?

Does anyone know if the G2 displays hspa+ in the phone signal? I only see UMTS or HSDPA and I live in Dallas which supposedly was one of the first cities to get HSPA+.
I've searched around but I have never found any concrete evidence regarding the issue. Fastest speed I've seen is about 6 Mbps, which I think is just standard 3G.

I went to Dallas last weekend, and mine showed HSPDA on status... So, I'm not sure... I was getting pretty rock solid download and upload speeds, roughly around 8 Mbps download...

When it says HSPDA it is on HSPA+, UMTS is 3G. Only reason I know this is because I live in Chicago and we just got it, so ever since, it has said HSPDA. Before, it only ever read UMTS.

I see a lot of people around here saying this and it's a bit strange to me. I have very clear E/edge, G/3G, and H/HSPA+ indicators on my phone.
Maybe I got a special build. haha

I was rocking a N1 before and it clearly was on HSDPA... This was months before HSPA+ was officially released in Chicago.

Is that so? My mistake then.
My phone almost never stays on G and if nothing else, is only on H and fluctuates to edge in some of the weaker signal areas.

G = gprs
e = edge
h = umts/hsdpa/hspa+, (3g/"4g")
g<e<h

Do you know of a way to force the phone to display 3G when appropriate? I think having the phone display "H" at all times is fairly misleading.

That does seem pretty rubbish, if it shows "H" even on when you're on plain 3G speeds.

Just so everyone knows. This discussion is not about the H in the status bar. We already know it displays H for all high speed connection types.
It is about the network type displayed in the staus and how to determine if you ade on HSPA+.

The only other option you have is to grab the "Mobile Signal Widget" from the Android Market. That will accurately tell you your signal strength and what connection signal you're surfing. I.E it'll show 3G if you're on 3G and H if you're on HSPA+.

I do use that and I see 3G and H, but I assumed I would see H+ when it goes to HSPA+.

I occasionally get HSPA+ from where I live and even then, my speeds are below 1 Mbps. At least the rest of you are approaching 3 or better, I'd kill for that.

NEwbie question H symbol

Ok so i updated to 2.2 using the qdl tool., everything seems to be working fine but I dont have 3g symbol, just a H which seems to be getting good speeds, does the H replace 3g?

Yes! it does. It means you're getting 3G speeds.

ATT, for whatever reason dumbs down their phones to not distinguish between the older UMTS 3G and HS*PA flavors which are technically 3.5G. Most unlocked (read non-ATT) phones on ATT will show up as H when they're getting their fastest speeds, although I have an old Nokia that actually has a '3.5G' indicator.
In short, if your phone says 'H', it's better than '3G'.

When I updated thru the QDL tool, I had the H on the 305 or 309 (whichever one it was)...then when I put DJSteve's 1.5.1 on my Streak, it went back to 3G.
Two questions:
1. Can I go into the build.prop files and change a line somewhere to get the H back?
2. If the answer to Q1 is yes, is it really going to get the faster speed, or is it just gonna give me the H instead of the 3G symbol?

anyways. its not european, its hsdpa not hspda. and the reason you see 3g instead of hspa on att devices can be for multiple reason. the obvious is that people see it and think "herp derp, im not on 3g! att suxors". another reason is that it will just show up as 3g on android 1.6 on most any device. and unless its told to show, if hsUpa is deactivated, the H wont show and att has made it a habit to remove hsupa from as many phones of theirs as they can.

H > G and if you ever see N your streak connected at 'Nirvana' speed, there is just no faster than 'N', yes your streak does support N speed as well but only temporarily and only when you let it go above 5m (~15') high

For G2 users, would you rather have a 4G icon instead of the H icon?

Just wanted to throw something out there to both users and developers. I always wondered if it was possible to change the "H" icon to a "4G" icon on a custom rom. Lets leave out the arguement of "Well HSPA+ isnt true 4G" and all of that. I just want to put that question out to developers and ask the G2 users if that is something that interests you. Just for my own curiousity. I personally wouldnt mind seeing it. Im a rooted user using Virtuous.
By the way just want to add that i read more than i post here and i wanna thank everyone who has posted helpful info on here. I love this G2. Glad i switched from Blackberry to Android.

It's just a small graphic element - there's no reason it *couldn't* be done, honestly.
You probably won't see it in Virtuous - the developers have stated that it is to be a pure port with few tweaks than a custom-built ROM (hence they don't support toggles in the notification area, etc).
It could easily be done as a stand-alone mod for any ROM, though.

There is no 4G and therefore a 4G icon should not be made. End of the ****ing story. Dont let the devs start supporting the bull**** marketing.
Its HSPA+. Label it as so.
If ANYTHING is to be changed, I would like to see E for edge, 3G for when I'm in 3G, H for HSPDA/HSPUA, and H+ or some derivative for HSPA+. That would make the most sense. There is no 4G, I do not ever want to see a 4G icon until 4G specs are met.
Its like putting a V6 sticker on a Honda Civic. It just isn't right.

Both CyanogenMod and Virtuous ROMS display 3G when your on 3G. Hope that helps.

I knew this, but thank you for clarifying that for anyone else

E, 3G and 4G icons are on sparksmod. 2G, 3G and H are on enomther. G, E and H are on stock. Non of this matters but a preference. What really matters is holding that data for long periods of time.
p.s. And to reference to 4G? This country doesn't have true 4G on any carrier. This has been discussed on another thread.

You do know that the ITU officially stated that LTE, WiMAX, and HSPA+ are now classified as 4G, right?
It would be well within reason to make a 4G icon when on 4G due to this fact.
I actually kind of think it would be better for devs. For example, CM is on several phones across several providers. Verizon with LTE, Sprint with WiMAX, and T-Mobile with HSPA+. Right now CM uses an H icon which is not what providers, other than T-Mobile, use. By using a 4G icon, it would make the new speed protocol icon generic across all platforms, regardless of network.
Just my thought.
Sidenote, a lot of Honda's are V6, even some have V8's, just depends on what one you are referring to. Need to be more specific XD

In my opinion i would say it would be nice if per-say thats hspa+ says 4g seeing as hspa is still closer to that of the 3g speed ranges. Just my two cents.

If there were only triggers to check speeds we could have a FUNCTIONAL system....
Say, We have the regular G, E
1 - 7.2MBPS = 3G
7.3+ MBPS = 4G (since ITU officially sees this as 4G)
I think we should go by this system..... keeps things nice and easy.
on a side note I do not understand why they let Sprint's WiMAX become 4G since it maxes out at... I donno 6ish MBPS....... sigh

LTE replaced by 4G after 17.1.A.2.69 update on AT&T

Hello all, so i updated to 17.1.A.2.69 today and notice i no longer have any LTE options. I now see 4G in quick settings and in mobile networks. Is this normal?

Yes - happened to me as well! But it's still LTE as I'm getting the same speed, They basically replaced the LTE icon with 4G icon, which I found pretty annoying.

In the US (maybe elsewhere) there is a strange distinction where a 4G icon is sometimes used for HSPA+ 4G (or 3.5G, depending on who you ask) and an LTE icon is used for LTE 4G. Kinda silly, but it's become something of a "standard" here now. I think that's why it concerns some people, because they are worried their phone is only using HSPA+ and not LTE.

Yes Sir! But US carriers had a history of marketing 3.5G/HSPA+ as 4G (Xperia Play 4G!). So anyone over here would freak out after seeing a 4G icon on an LTE capable phone. But all US users are using imported Z2 at this moment - so I guess we just have to deal with it.

I know this sound stupid.... but if i am getting 50 Mbps then.. even thought it has the 4G sign it should be an LTE... right? Logically thinking the HSPA+ can only go up to 20 Mbps

Should be correct. I think technically H+ can handle up to 42Mbps or something like that. I wish it were that fast here, lol
