According to an article on engadget, verizon ceo confirms plans for tiered data pricing. I'm not sure how this will effect customers who have already signed a two year contract. I asked the Verizon rep when I bought my X, and he told me a while back that since I have a contract I won't be affected until it is up, but you know you can't trust them.
Either way, this sucks... way to go Verizon and ruin the best thing you have going for you.
That sucks the big one.

if ur already on an unlimited plan they cant make u chose a a tiered plan it goes against ur contract with them so they would ummm grandfathered ur plan until its expired...
Yes they are all correct your current contract would not be affected. I also saw a story about the Sprint CEO making comments that teired data could be coming to Sprint. Looks like all the carriers will be doing this in the future. Maybe they will use some of that money and upgrade their networks

Its just like the new data plans for the iPhone. If you had the unlimited plan before the tiered plans game out you would be grandfathered in. My younger brother had the iphone 3 gs, then cancelled and switched over to the droid x, didn't like it then went back to at&t with the new contract only to find out that he now has tierd data plans.
This will be the same issue for verizon users so stick with your plans and nothing will change. Plus we all know that droid x users consume more data than any other droid product.

If Boost uses a cdma network it's possible. Just a few system changes. For my old Storm it was as simple as changing an xml file to cross to other carriers, but it was a cdma and gsm phone.
This is horrible, first they go from $10 data to $30 data (charging basically what it would cost you to get a voice line) now they **** us again???
AT&T is a joke, went from $30 unlimited to $25 2GB...really?????? you charging basically the same for only 2GB? what a joke, this is complete bull**** if verizon has anything close to that.
Fair $15 2GB $20 5GB
Yeah good thing I just signed for a 2yr with verizon. Cuz THAT BLOWS BIG OLE DONKEY BALLS>
In the future....I'm talking 10/15 years....Tiered Data plans will suck if the limited plans stay at the same cap. Because when 6G comes out and verizon has yet to raise the ceiling on your 200MB plan ...your transfer rate per second will be so fast that within a few minutes you'd hit your 200MB monthly data cap for the whole month. I know the executives are thinking this far down the road and are probably shivering with fear with unlimited plans and are thinking dollars signs with tiered plans. That's why it's so crucial to try to stay on unlimited for the rest of your life.
.....in canada we get pretty much gouged......eat this boys...$25 for. .... Wait for it....500mb.
I am constantly aware of how much i am downloading and up loading. Thank god for wifi everywhere.

25 bucks for 500MB??? I feel so sorry for you. I'm really curious to see what Verizon proposes. They usually copy everything AT&T does so I'm assuming 200MB/2GB but it may be a little different. Either way it's limiting and those caps will only work with today's technology not tomorrows.
They would be doing this as some people don't use that much data on their smart phones so this lets them pay for what they need at a lower cost. Now for those who use 3-5GB will be screwed, what really sucks is they say the Droid line uses more data than any other smartphone.
But luckily those of us that already have unlimited data plan will not be have to deal with this until you upgrade your device which in that you would be upgrading your contract including that specific detail. Even if you go month to month after your contract they cannot change it on you.
Crap...

LTE is just around the corner, and can already run up to 100/mbps on single antennas without duplexing. Poor sprint.
So if we are grandfathered in...and we upgrade our phones in one or two years, only to find out our unlimited plan isn't "compatible" with the new phone, we'll be forced to get tiered data?
This happened when I went from my dare with $10 unlimited data to my omnia with $30 unlimted data. I wasn't allowed to keep my data plan because it was not compatible.
So Unlimited not equal to Unlimited!
I just got a message from simple mobile saying that my data will be suspended for the rest of the billing period. I called them and they said there are no caps but I used a lot of data in small amounts of time stressing their networks!? I told them I didn't do any streaming/tethering, I just need to work with huge email attachments. They said that they don't care. I asked them how to make sure that this doesn't happen and they said that they don't know.
Anyone else suffering the wrath of simple mobile for no reason?
boo
get what you pay for??
isn't simple's plan like 60 bucks for talk text and web?? can't complain too much..also, taken from their website::

Surprisingly, I had a good 7 month history with simple mobile. I average about 3 to 5 gigs of data per month (no tethering.. just some light streaming, office use email, nav etc.) But this time I used about 3 gigs and bit the bullet.
And you know what sucks? Signing up a contract for two years and paying $79.99 plus tax with limited minutes and unlimited data. I can walk away from simple mobile now without paying a dime. Just my 2 cents.
Lol I font even have a data plan..got the phone from wallyworld for 50 bucks..cancelled the line after two weeks..200 for that..i got a half price phone with no contract..yeah.

I also was capped! I have always used at least 3Gigs a month.
Simple Mobile piggy backs T-Mobiles lines.
T-Mobile Still offers Unlimited but, you get capped if you go over their 5Gigs.
But T-Mobile now has 59.99 unlimited plans and they lowered their 4G limit to 2Gigs.
They still keep true to their word, but they CAP YOU INSTEAD!!!
Simple Mobile has to follow T-Mobile standards.

so you can actually just buy the subsidized phone and cancel the contract? what if you try to get service form them again later on? do they black ball you?
You get what you pay for!
After research on this matter after being capped (More Here!), my data speeds have been restored to normal after REUP.
Conclusion:
Service was Capped (restricted up/download speeds) after 2 gigabytes of data services use.

T-Mobile will suffer the same cap! Be aware!

In my opinion:
Either T-Mobile is joining the other carriers with their Capped data services or they are getting ready to merge with AT&T!
Hey I'm getting a rezound in a week or so, and I wanted to ask, can my friend put some kind of prepaid no data service on the inc and use it when I get the rezound
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
As far as I know no I have a inc on my prepay account and a data package is required when selecting a plan.
I was thinking about going prepaid... and I didn't spend much time researching. I got the impression that you can get like 400 minutes talk and unlimited data for the same price I'm paying now, about $75/mo.
The deal is more of a "month to month" deal (albeit prepaid) than one where you pay a chunk of cash and use the service until your minutes (or data) run out. I assume (you know what happens when I assume) anyone with a Verizon capable phone could do that. I can't imagine Verizon turning down money.
Like I said, I didn't spend much time researching. Once I saw the price was same as I was paying... there was no point for me to investigate further. Basically its the same deal that happens have when a contract is done... but if verizon isn't pre-paid... service will be cut immediately.

I am using my Incredible with them. They are a Verizon Wireless MVNO and have several plans to choose from. Check them out.
RE: Page Plus Cellular - FYI -They will disable data on any plan at our request. This is particularly helpful if on a paygo plan (vs one of the monthly bundle plans ) and truly don't want data .

I'm in the process of looking for a T-Mobile 4G phone to use on Simple Mobile and their 4G plan - 60 dollar unlimited
So i'm planning to give my two fascinates to my parents when the S3 comes out but the minimal data plan is $30. is there any way to activate it using the $10 data plan? also, what happened to that 15 dollar data plan? damn verizon..
my parents will probably use less than a 1GB of data. i dont want to pay $60 when they will use so little of it.

verizon is in the process of changing thier data plans...a rep told me they are coming out with family share data plans instead of each line having its own. not sure when its going to happen but rumor is this fall.
thanks for the insight. i might wait till then.
On the new plan they can share 1 gig of data for $130 monthly with unlimited talk and text. That is the smallest plan for 2 smart phones.

Are all of the new plans going to combine voice and data in a single package? I want as much data as possible and as few voice minutes as possible. I'm on the unadvertised Loyalty Share 550 which shares 550 minutes between my phone and my wife's. We have never gone over that. I hate to pay for unlimited minutes just to get a high enough data limit. Same goes for texts, which I don't use a lot of.
I am in the same boat. I don't use text at all. I hate Verizon when it does that. But galaxy s3 that I want so, well I will update.

You have the choice even after June 28th to keep your current plan.. You will not be forced on these new bull**** plans
However, unlimited data,
After the 28th of you want to upgrade a line that has unlimited data you will have 2 choices
1 pay in full (700-800 dollars) and keep your unlimited
2 get your phone subsidized like we all usually do when getting a new 2 year, but lose unlimited data.
PSA ! If you have a upgrade and unlimited data, PREORDER YOUR SGS3 NOW or UPGRADE TO ANOTHER PHONE BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

Looks like I'll be a new AT&T customer here pretty soon with a Galaxy SII. I received a text from Verizon stating I will have to switch to an available smartphone plan, since I've been using an old prepaid talk and text plan from 2 years ago with $30 unlimited data. I'd sworn off contracts but there's not much choice. Prepaid GSM is a no go because they don't use the full network, so the coverage is nothing where I live. Decent HSPA+ coverage with the postpaid network though. It comes out to $84 per month for a decent plan with 3GB data and my business discount. It's been fun gents!

Why don't we just get rid of the whole plan thing? It's stupid. You pay per liter water you use. Per liter gas. Per KWH. Why would this be any different with calling and internet?
If provider A says "come to us, we charge you 10 dollar per GB", and provider B says "with us, you pay 30 dollar per month for 5GB data", everyone will immediately run to provider B. With provider A, you pay 50 dollar for 5GB, and with provider B, you pay 30 dollar for 5GB. So at first sight, obviously provider B seems cheaper. But it isn't. No one uses the same amount of data every month. Some months you don't use any data at all. Think about vacations. If you go to provider A, you will pay NOTHING those months.
The thing about plans is that people are using more data just to reach their limit. "Damn, 5 days to go for the end of the month, and I still have 500MB left? Better watch a lot of youtube videos, otherwise I've wasted 500MB!" Just think about that for a second. Think about how stupid that is.
If you really want to use 5GB every month, you will have to pay for it. But if you don't use data at all in a month, you won't have to pay anything. You pay per GB (or MB) data you use, and while provider A may seem more expensive at first sight, I think that with 99% of the people, it's actually cheaper.
No one thinks it is weird that you get charged per liter/KWH. Tell me in what way calling or internet is any different.
(All the prices are examples and aren't relevant to my point)
Carriers would never go for this. It's all about money for them. They would charge you to recharge your phone off they could
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yes. But the carriers also use the people that don't use their full data allotment to recoup the costs from the data hungry individuals. Plus, you may choose the more expensive one because you feel you will use less. But you will also feel restricted. However if you do the 5gb a month plan. You get a better rate AND you have security that you will know how much you pay each month.
Also, a lot of people use more than 3gb of data. Not the majority. But the majority doesn't care about 4g. The point of 4g is to be able to utilize large downloads, streaming, and video calling. Do any of those and you will quickly rack up the costs. If you don't want to do those things or you have WiFi every where than you are fine.
But most importantly there are carriers with plans like this, do go jump on theirs. What is really ridiculous is people spending $50 or more for unlimited calls or texts when they don't need them

Isn't that the same thing? Just like you pay per liter/KWH, and just like you should pay per MB, you should also pay per minute/SMS. Only for people who actually call/SMS/browse MORE than the limit (or would, if they could), every month of every year, this would be a problem. Because they would be paying even more if they would pay per call/SMS/MB. But I doubt that there's anyone who actually reaches their limit without deliberately trying to. And some months you don't call/SMS/browse at all.
So while you will be paying more in the months you actually use a lot, you will be paying less overall. Even if the providers raise the prices. Customers got to understand that. It will only be disadvantageous for the people who always reached their limit.
That's what we call BUSINESS!
