So I am going to be picking up a 2nd phone line for work, and it's either Sprint or Verizon due to the unlimited calling packages.
I was at the Verizon store today and I did a side-by-side comparison with my Samsung Captivate in terms of speedtest.net.
While Pandora was streaming, I was getting 900 down and 800 up on the Droid X. I ran that twice.
As soon as I turned Pandora off, it was at about 400 down and 800 up. Is this typical for Verizon? Do other people have these types of speeds, or was I just in a bad area. They had a Droid 2 on display that was getting 1 bar of signal, and the Droid Xs were getting 4 - 5 bars. I don't know which to believe.
I like the Droid X and the talk time it offers, but I don't know if I can cripple myself into a slow network.
Thanks for any input!
EDIT: I was getting 1800 down and 350 up on my Captivate. I guess I should mention that.
Wireless or 3G?
My 3G results fluctuate anywhere around 800-900 down and 500-600 up (in NJ)
My WiFi signal on the other hand...fuhgettaboutit
Last night I pulled a 14,457 down with a 1,791 up

Sheesh. I knew that the 3g with verizon was slow but damn. I often tether to my laptop so that might be a deal breaker for me. But the quoted up to 8 hours talk time is still very pretty.

Just tried mine a few times
1.26 down and 0.43 up
1.03 down and 0.40 up
1.63 down and 0.42 up
1.19 down and 0.63 up
1.87 down and 0.57 up
all over the board, but better than what you were getting.
this in a area that ATT does not even have 3g yet.
never bothered to test the wifi on the phone.
I live in a a small city in Oklahoma and on average I pull down 2082 kbps and upload at about 754 kbps. Some days I get about 2500 kbps down and 900 kbps up.

It varies a lot, depending on area. In central NJ, on my Droid X, I trend to get 800 to 1800 (of course there are areas lower, but few; and there are singe in the 2400 range).
I did have the EVO for a few weeks, and at least around here, it was generally (~30%) worse, though better in a few spots.
I tried the EVO in Vegas too (though I didn't have the Droid X then). I was nir impressed. And Vegas is supposed to be a big Sprint town. They had their 4G there, but it was not that much faster than their 3G (maybe 1.5x-2x, not even close to 10x), and not very reliable when moving around (kept doing down to 3G).

I don't see how VZ's pending 4G is going to help anyone getting a Droid X. Unless, may be it will free up some of the bandwidth on 3G' but even then, that will be a slow transition through 2011.

So far on 3g I've never broken 1000kbps. yes thats kbps.
I just ran a few speed tests again.
5 out of 6 bars.
3 tests run.
Highest download speed: 26 yes TWENTY SIX kbps.
Upload was the normal 147.
IS THIS THE ENHANCED 3g/4g experience I'm paying for?!?
Sprint 3G sucks pretty badly compared to AT&T and T-Mobile. I've seen AT&T phones get over 1500kbps way more often than not.
With my phone I consistently get under 1000kbps with good signal areas giving me over 1300kbps and up to 2000kbps if I'm lucky.
Yeah, this was one of the major disappointments of coming from tmobile with 2-6mbps dls and not realizing how slow cdma 3g data was..probably the main reason im getting the g2 soon.

Ha, I just got 592 down and 87 up.
Honestly, though, my house sucks for signal quality. My AT&T phones could barely even make a call out of here. My Epic sounds basically like a land line in comparison. But yeah, data speeds suck. It's not the Epic's fault.
Luckily I have wi-fi at home and at work and I'm in a 4G area otherwise.

You're comparing 2 gsm providers with a cdma provider. Cdma is not real 3g, so their gsm speeds are always better...personally sprint gives me the best service of verizon, usc, or att. My data speeds with sprint are twice what I ever saw with vz and I never had att 3g serviceat home, had to drive into town.

My phone rarely drops below 600dl. One of the places I work I get decent speed at 1700 down (still upload capped). The 1 time I got no upload cap, my phone must have been downloading an update from Sprint (DI07) cause I got prompted to install it shortly afterwards. This has to account for something... I'll patiently wait for the fix though as I love the phone and rarely upload anything. E-mails still send fine (no pics, just text for work).

Our phones capable of taking advantage of that at all?
Maybe faster speeds? Maybe that is why my data kept dropping today.
It might mean better speeds all around, but wondering if this is something where the device/hardware has to be capable of supporting such speeds. Roommate has a g2x, being that it's so new i'm telling my roommate to run a couple speed tests. Of course he is pissing around about it.
Edit: Here in pittsburgh at 1 a.m. both our phones (g2 and g2x) are stuck on EDGE. Obviously the 3g is down for the upgrade, yay! Plus with that rocket thing coming out tomorrow, they pretty much gotta have this done over night so people dont go and buy them and ***** that the speeds aren't what they are advertised as. So if nothing else, tomorrow morning we shall see!

Of course we're not gonna see a number even close to 42mbps. When it was at 21mbps we didn't even see that. We saw numbers at 5-8 average. With the increase, hopefully Tmobile's network can go head to head with Verizon's LTE cause its damn impressive. If we can at least hit 12mbps, we'll be good!

I think because there is a difference between mbps and MBPS. I don't think anyone thought it would go that fast from the getgo. But before I used to get 1 to 4 mbps, now since testing about twenty different times all over the city the past 12 hours, it is consistently 3 to 8 mbps. Big change here.

The difference is b versus B (lowercase versus upper case)
Mbps = megabit per second
MBps = megabyte per second
1 Byte = 8 bits
But in talking about data transfer rates, Mbps is pretty universally used. Often, people get lazy and just type "mpbs" when it should really be "Mbps".
But technically, the lower case "m" is not correct. It symbolizes 1/1000th, like millimeter (mm). Uppercase "M" as the prefix symbolizes one million, very different. But there really is no such thing as a thousandth of a bit. So when "mbps" is typed, its usually understood that it means megabit per second.
Not for our android devices. Only for that Rocket 3.0 thing sadly.

They keep on getting better and better with connections (4G, LTE, etc) but sometime soon the batteries need to catch up with that development. All the people I know with EVO's can barely last the day. The HTC Thunderbolt apparently has HORRENDOUS battery life when using the LTE network. Browsing and such is amazingly fast on it, but it ruins the battery life. I don't see the point in using these blazing fast speeds when the phone itself lasts half a day.
In general all this pisses me off. The connections keep getting better and faster, yet we keep getting more and more caps and restrictions placed on it to barely even utilize it. It's really getting out of control and ridiculous IMHO.

I think most people just accept that cell phones are supposed to last only a day. I dont think it's on any carriers/manufacturers priority list. It's just accepted knowledge at this point. Were not using piece of garbage clamshell razors that can last 3-4 days no more sadly I mean really when you look at how advanced and how much our phones can do, it really is a miracle of god that it can even last a day with such a small form factor and battery.
G2 and G2x can only run 14.4Mbps that's the max for our phone just the new vibrant 4G can run to 21.+Mbps and those 4G cell site upgrades aren't for the releasing of Rocket 3.0 only, android phones, tablets, web connect and anything that t-mobile sells that has web are all included.

At least the new rate plans that rolled out Sunday have a 10GB option. I would prefer a true unlimited option, but at least it is not going the other way like ATT and Verizon with smaller data allowances and overage charges.
I do HATE the new advertising though. We are now supposed to answer the phones with "thank you for calling T-mobile, home of the $10 unlimited data plan". I'm sorry but 200MB is not even in the same ballpark of unlimited.
I can confirm speeds now of around 6-8 Mbps. Pretty nice bump. I do agree with the unlimited thing being BS. All the carriers but Sprint have jumped on the cap wagon. That being said, I'm liking the new speeds. My wife has the Thunderbolt but I can still laugh at her pathetic "3G" speeds. (LTE is not here in Portland, OR and won't be for some time) Now if we can only hit that 12 Mbps mark.....

I'm in Pittsburgh (South Hills) and I've seen almost a double in data speeds since the turn on. Before, my average speed was 1-3Mb/s and 6Mb/s was something that I'd only get for wifi or maybe at like 3-4am on my way into work, I consistently hit 5-6 all afternoon yesterday. Even if we can't fully utilize it, it did benefit G2 users in some way.

Its exactly because speeds are getting faster that they are breaking it down to different plans. They don't want the network going down.
So, my cousins, who have Verizon came over to my house today. I asked if I could look at the Droid Charge, they said sure. Upon turning on the phone, I instantly notice the 4G LTE icon next to the signal bars, on top of it being 4-5 bars out of 6. So I had to do a speedtest to compare with Sprint's 4G (at my house, mind you). Verizon's 4G LTE hit 20,000 Kbps DL, and 3,000 kbps UL. Whereas Sprint hit 1,100 kbps DL, 300 kbps UL. I decided to really test this monster called 4G and hit up my home WiFi via Comcast. My Comcast high speed internet home service hit 13,000 kbps DL, and 6,000 kbps UL. This just made me sad that Verizon's LTE had that much potential. Sprint's 3G speeds score 2,650(ish) at my house for DL, but it's nothing compared to LTE. Will Sprint's LTE be better than WiMax to this extent, or is it just the location of the towers?
I'm happy with Sprint's unlimited service, so switching carriers isn't even an option in my mind, but I am curious as to what Sprint's 4G plans are later on.
I did laugh though, that the overpriced Droid Charge is on FroYo still. lol typical Samsung.

Me and my buddy who is on verizon with a charge also have done the compairsons showing verizon Is much faster. However verizons lte is very new, compared to "sprint" 4g which has sprint, comcast, and clear users on the network. When clear 4g hit seattle, I was early on the bandwagon and it wasn't uncommon for me to hit 14000 kbs down now I see maybe 7000kbs down on the regular. Also sprint teathering is the only way to get 4g without any throttling after heavy usage. Were as clear and comcast throttle after about 20gb usage a week roughly. So we will see as verizon loads its network what lte truely has to offer.

My wife has a Charge. I've watched the sickness that is their LTE. It also makes me glad I'm not sharing a bill. I think Sprint scares everyone else because they most resemble the mentality of Thomas Edison, “I shall make electricity so cheap that only the rich can afford to burn candles.”
The biggest impediment is money right now. Sprint and Clearwire need billions of dollars. Recent debt ceiling debacle has made corporate financing even harder and more expensive. Meanwhile, Lightsquared has to win over its regulatory issues concerning GPS.
The clock is ticking. Subscribers are fleeing. Ultimately, Sprint needs the iPhone ASAP.
My work is switching from sprint to verizon. I don't know why. But they are offering the lg revolution, the droid x, driod 2 incredible and of course the iphone 4. I told one guy good luck with that. It very convenient when you're on the go, but when you're home WiFi is pretty much better to use than 4G because it doesn't strain the battery that much. The good thing about 4G is if Comcast is doing maintenance at your house like they did mine one night, you'll be without internet for a few hours and 4G as a temporary connection.
I generally get 6 Mbps download and 1 Mbps up. Plenty quick for a phone in my opinion. For some reason at my work though, WiMax consistently tests out between 9 and 11 Mbps. Makes me think that I am either close to a tower or there aren't many 4G users out there. Either way, I can download data faster than the average person can to their home PC. No complaints here.
Damn I wish I had 20000 kbps on my phone. I have no 4g here and Verizon is roaming In my area. Luckily I use my wifi all the time and get like 18 megs down.

I recently updated to stock GB and decided to try some speed tests in different parts of the the city today. This is my first experience with EI22 or anything not based on EC05 for that matter.
Anyway, in my neighborhood (Morningside Heights), data speeds have always been terrible, but I was able to pull pretty decent 3G speeds in most of the rest of Manhattan with Froyo. Today, I drove through Manhattan, starting as far south as Union Square, and worked my way all the way back up the west side. In short, 3G speeds were the worst I've seen them. Areas were I was able to pull in upwards of 0.8 Mbps with Froyo, I could barely crack 0.3 Mbps with Gingerbread. The best I got was about 8th Ave and 14th, were my downstream was 0.5 and upstream of 0.73. Everywhere else hovered between 0.12 and 0.3 down and 0.2 to 0.63 up. In every case, as per usual, 3G upstream was faster than down.
I have no idea if this is a Gingerbread issue, the fault of my Epic or if Sprint's 3G network is just that much worse now than it was a few weeks back, but this is far and away the worst I've seen it since becoming a Sprint customer.
I only ran a handful of 4G speed tests, and those had downstream speeds between 7.33 Mbps and 8.74 Mbs, and meager upstream between 1.37 Mbps and 1.46 Mbps.

I agree. Still on Froyo , here are my 7 AM Sat results (Upper East Side, 90's):
3G:
0.34 - 0.7 MBPS down, 0.6 - 0.7 MBPS up, PING: 87-122 MS
- most ping times were under 100 MS
- d/l speeds are inconsistent but generally are closer to the lower end of the range number rather than the higher end
4G:
2.95 - 8.77 MBPS down, 1.47 - 1.50 MBPS up, PING: 119-126 MS
- ping times are consistent, although sucky
- download speeds are very insconsistent
Conclusions:
- it is NOT Gingerbread.
- it is NOT the iPhone launch either - these speeds are similar to what I had since August, way prior to the iPhone launch.
- Sprint's 3G: you get what you pay for. Wifey's completely stock Droid 2 Global (VZW) pulls 1.5 - 2 MBPS down consistently, with consistent PINGs in the 70 MS range.
- Sprint's 4G: great if you can find it, but spotty coverage and battery life drain limit its usefulness. Would take consistent 1.5 MBPS+ 3G with in-building penetration over current version of WiMax any day of the week.

Not when I had my Hero. Sprints 3g was pulling upto 5mbps
But ever since I got the epic, my 3g has been horrible. 4g has ALWAYS been great (I keep it running when I'm in ny) but 3g took a big hit.
I came down to florida the day of the snowstorm so I haven't really gotten to see the speeds get worst in nyc, but down here on 3g I'm getting 1.8 mbps (atleast on eh06... since I've upgraded to ei22, I've noticed things taking a bit longer to load but ima blame that on my phone still getting used to the modem.) I haven't ran speedtests with ei22 yet. Ima wait a couple of days.
I expect when I come home, for 3g to be even more atrocious than it was.
Trust me bro...keep 4g on in the city. It stays connected along the entire 6 train line in the bronx and all throughout manhattan. I haven't gone to brooklyn in a while but I imagine 4g is upto par there too.

I've noticed a few of the more honest Sprint reps I've spoken with have said that the HTC devices have considerably better antennae than the Epic. Supposedly the HTCs are crappier in every other respect, though. I still hold that Sprint's 3G in NYC is worse than it was a month or so ago.
Things down started slowinglast Jul IIRC. If you think Sprint 3G is bad in NYC, try Suffolk County, Long Island... unless you're next to a tower, it's often slower than thick molasses, dying snails and glaciers.
Now off Froyo EC05 and onto GB EI22 rom, the measured speeds are (drumroll!) exactly the same. As for 4g connectivity, it has dead zones in various places i.e. Upper West Side. I don't know how people manage to keep 4g on all the time and not run out of juice - extended or extra batteries?
Lol at the guy who said it was apple...

Things down started slowinglast Jul IIRC. If you think Sprint 3G is bad in NYC, try Suffolk County, Long Island... unless you're next to a tower, it's often slower than thick molasses, dying snails and glaciers.

I live on deer park avenue and work on 110, if it weren't for optimum wifi, I'm pretty sure I'd have killed myself by now (that's the only positive thing you'll ever hear me say about cablevision, lol)

In my neighborhood, I can't stay connected to 4G at all. Usually, I can get on and I'm then dropped within a couple of minutes. If I'm driving around Manhattan, I can stay on 4G for a chunk of the time, but usually get dropped in a few places. 4G is nice when it works: the speeds typically range anywhere from 5Mbps to 8Mbps in the areas of Manhattan I've used it. That being said, it's tendency to just drift in and out make it pretty hard to deal with. There are also a few total Sprint dead zones in areas where dead zones should exist - for example, around 34th and Park, there's almost zero coverage.
sitting by a window on 110th and Broadway, ran the speed test app 3 times to check 3G speeds:
Ping 286 - Download 0.12 Mbps - Upload 0.29 Mbps
Ping 362 - Download 0.01 Mbps - Upload 0.23 Mbps
Ping 356 - Download 0.03 Mbps - Upload 0.27 Mbps
remind me why I'm paying for this
I have been seeing some pretty crappy speeds myself (not in New York though).
Nothing nearly as slow as what I had been seeing for awhile. You should also take into consideration that Sprint has been rolling out the GB update OTA so that could be what's causing the abysmal speeds lately?
I noticed a huge difference in 3G today. Could be because the majority of the people got the update? Just a thought. But speeds are blazing fast for me on 3G today and it hasn't been since GB rolled out.
Check out the LTE speeds that I get in New Haven, CT on AT&T. I'm using an HTC Vivid and running Rum Float beta 3(ICS w/ sense) Pretty impressive IMHO... ALMOST 39 DOWN/14 UP!!! Check out the attached pic!

amazing!
low latency + high speed
You suck
The best I ever got with verizon LTE with 5 bars right next to a tower is 33mbs DL and 15UL. Yet with 3/5 bars you get 38/14. And I bet it never just drops too. oh why verizon WHY. With 3/5 bars on verizon I avg 8-15mbsDL and 2.5-11mbsUL, with the best being 24/15.
There are times were my H+ S2 can flat out beet my droid RAZR in youtube video loading and keeping it a flowing.
P.S I had no idea Poland had LTE. It's it any good?
NICE. That's a tad bit faster than my FiOs too.
I'm in Hawaii and we always get things last. LOL.

For the few seconds I had data on with my prepaid plan few minutes after I landed, it was pretty fast, then I had no money eft on my account to call lol.
I didn't check speeds, but it was pretty damn fast. But I was in the capitol at the airport, so it will always be faster lol. But even 3G is pretty fast back in Poland. America is way behind on mobile data.
@OP , Im in Harford, best I ever got was 8Dwn 1Up on HSPA+, wife has LG Nitro HD LTE, will have to give it a try. Was told by a Best Buy Mobile Rep we should be getting LTE any week now. 2 ATT customer service reps on the phone coulnd find a date, but said all LTE markets should be done in the next 2 months.
--in the meantime Im throttled to Edge speed for going over 3GB, I know theres an APN switch for 4G SIM Users, but I'll have to wait.
---GT-P6200 by the way. Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (from Malaysia) HSPA+ and voce calling on Honecomb 3.2
awesome!! Faster than my dsl :/
wow! I wish I had these speeds!
faster than my H+ S2, My Droid razr on 4GLTE and my TWC ISP. I would have to add them all up to get what you get. LOL

You are not too behind, but still behind than some other places
Japan started using 3G in 1998, whereas the US started it in 2002. Also, check this out too: http://en.teknoblog.com/communicati...cell-3g-is-faster-than-4g-networks-in-us.html
As jaszek said, 3G is pretty fast in Europe
Yeah, 3G is quite fast here on Europe but not so fast than the LTE on USA for sure

I agree, and even though they say Turkcell has one of the fastest networks available worldwide, and Steve Wozniak's thoughts about the network, I can't really say that its that fast because I used the same network for 4 years. Maybe it was the phones I used, who knows?
Hi,
how about the ping? is the ping always constant 40-50? or also sometimes 100+ or 20?
thx
