Gps workaround - Epic 4G General

Ok so yesterday was ridiculous. Me and my friends were going to a Sonics cuz we've never been to one. Long story short, whenever we get into a jam, I use Sprint nav. I couldn't use it yesterday because the gps wouldn't lock.
I thought DI18 fixedthe issues

DI18 was not even supposed to fix the GPS issues on the Epic. We are still awaiting a final fix from Sprint and Samsung. (For that matter, we are still waiting for them to publicly acknowledge the problem.)
One workaround for the worst of the bugs, caused by bad handling of GPS cache data, is documented here. (It's also documented somewhere on xda, but it is harder to find.) Another workaround is just to reboot the phone.

ive never had problems with gps

Rebooting the phone and using the workaround doesnt fix the issue with the phone lagging like **** when you're actually driving. Sometimes it wont update for 30 seconds.... which can totally screw you over. When my EVO locks on, it doesn't go half a second without updating.

even before the fix i haven't noticed a problem with my GPS. Now with the fix it updates faster. Maybe you are holding yours wrong.

Reboot is not the answer. Change the setting in GPS to cold start. Fixed the prob for me completly andim on DI18 stock.

If you follow the link I posted you would understand that I agree about recommending cold start. But some folks might be more comfortable just rebooting as needed. Both methods reset the cache, and both can take a little time to get a fresh fix when the GPS starts. After that, the performance is quite decent.

The GPS has other issues, frankly I think some of which can't be fixed and some of which can be fixed.

Boomer is correct. There are half a dozen ad hoc ways to clear the cache. Cold start does it every time, which means the problem never shows up, but has a drawback of harming Standalone GPS operation (outside of data coverage) area.

There is no fix in the latest firmware, there is a user developed workaround which address one of several issues.

Im receiving my Vibrant on Monday... what can I do to limit the issues?

So im receiving my Vibrant on Monday, and from what I have read a lot of people seem to say that you should do a factory reset on it. Should I do this straight out of the box so I dont have to do it later on once everythings installed on it? And is there anything I can do to make the battery last a little longer? such as charge it up all the way, drain it completely, and charge it up again, and do this cycle three or four times or does it not help at all?
What I would like to know overall is what should I do straight out of the box to fix (if possible) the issues with the:
1. GPS (I understand the GPS and Compass issue are going to be fixed in the first OTA update, but until then can I do anything?)
2. Compass
3. Lag
4. Battery drain
5. Should I immediately do the factory reset, or wait and see if I have any issues?
From what I have read, it seems like 100% of people have issues with the phone, but maybe thats just because the people who dont have any issues with it are out enjoying the phone?
All help is extremely appreciated!!!!
C'mon, just enjoy the new phone.
jake...
exuse my most basic of basic questions. I am fairly new to the droid phones.
I see your question of problems with the Vibrant.
Well, you said GPS, and then compass
Well I know what GPS is, and I certainly know what a compass is.
HOWEVER, Not within the text of a phone. Is it simply a compass that is used by a GPS to function?? Again, excuse my bare bones knowledge guess. I should have PM'd you it is so silly. Maybe not
I would love to hear back from you. It sounds like you try to be one step ahead of the game. I would love it if you had the time to take to PM me...could you

The simplest guide to happiness with your new Vibrant
Reset it out of the box
Root
Install SetCPU
DONE
You should use a black or dark background to reduce drain on the battery and you also have to give the battery some time to adjust. GPS should be fine, but if it's not you should do a reboot first and you should try increasing accuracy before doing anything else. I have my Vibrant and I don't need any of the "fixes" to get a solid GPS lock. Solid enough for now until Samsung issues an update so we can lock onto more sats. I've seen the latest beta perform extremely well, locking on 6 sats at a time with 10Ft of accuracy (moving).
I just got my Vibrant today and was using the GPS just fine without a master reset or anything. Didn't even know there was an issue lol

great! thanks for help. the only issue is the rooting part... i can root a phone if i wanted to no problem, but the only issue i have with rooting is voiding my warranty-my MyTouch was replaced three times under warranty-if i need to replace this phone for any reason I would like to keep my warranty.
now i just have a question tho, how do i increase my GPS accuracy? all i see are threads on 'fixing' it.

Increasing the accuracy number (not "accuracy" in the literal sense) can be done by accessing the LBS (location based services) menu. It's under Application Settings from there. The code for getting there is in all of the fix threads. Just increase the stock 50 number to 100 and it should lock a bit easier.
Root, I don't believe there is a way to unroot back to stock. Not 100% sure on that so someone else can correct me. Root would only be useful for SetCPU, the ability to take screenshots and other minor things. No WiFi tether is reliably working right now which is bothersome and one of my biggest reasons for rooting.

it would not hurt it. if it did, you could just change the setting back to 50.
Wow. You can unroot. There is a working tether option. Very likely you will not have any issues outof the box. Many of us have no issues with gps. You can do a factory wipe immediately after logging into the phone,i just don't see the point (seeing as it just came from the factory).
Strongly encourage you to read the sticky thread.
Also, not sure I see the reason for installing SetCPU, right now, as there are no kernels for overclocking.

JI6 GPS still has major issues

Got excited after updating to JI6 this afternoon and the GPS locked on with 10 seconds, however tonight I went on a drive and the GPS wouldn't lock on after minutes. Finally gave up and rebooted which resolved the problem.
I'm also seeing some issues with the GPS being off by 100's of feet which is causing maps to reroute. Seems like mainly when stopped at a signal light.
Hopefully rebooting solved the first issue, but I not happy that there is still problems with GPS after waiting 2 months for a fix
Also the LAG seems worse. LAG needs to be the next top priority
That's a drag man, sorry to hear that. Maybe consider installing a custom ROM? I'm running Bionix 1.4, no lagfix because I'm getting zero lag. Rooting and flashing was very quick and my phone is now very responsive.
GPS is still hit or miss, but it's mostly hit and overall is working much better.
To be honest flashing this ROM has improved my phone ten fold.
Maybe give it a try. Just a thought, and sorry again to hear about your issues.
fix: flash (clockwork) "Vibrant-JI2-GPS.zip"
ji6 gps BLOWSSSSS
enter *#3214789650# and switch to MSmode, This solved the accuracy problem for me on JI6.
I don't know why samsung insists on seting Standalone mode for the GPS, Swiching to MSmode was the first thing we did to fix the GPS months ago.

Bionix 1.7 is the answer to your woes
Did you **** with any of the GPS settings prior to updating?
My GPS is working great, tracking, navigation and all. Lag? What lag?
Also, why did you think this topic deserved another thread? We already have one on this topic.. thanks.
Is anyone seeing their GPS just start wondering off? I'll be setting perfectly still and the GPS will start jumping in one direction by 100+ yards each time and it'll keep going, like yesterday I ended up over 200 miles away from where I actually was. Oh and instead of being on the street it has me in parking lots and fields. Not seeing the fix on my end.
It's working like a charm for me after JI6 !!!
GPS is fine for me and even better after enabling agps
For some reason agps is disabled by default.
Can you guys tell me your exact settings on the LbsTestMode? Not just the usual ms-mode/ supl.google.com/ 7276.. I need to know all the settings you have cos I messed with mine and want it back to stock
No problem here
I must be lucky, I am using Frankin Twiz final and a simple fix and i have 5-7 sats locks and 10-15 m accuracy. From all the reading...... depending on how you customized your phone, it seems to me that you have to customize the gps fix as well, as I see no absolute fix by anyone that works for all.
GPS
I got the update. The GPS worked for awhile but now it doesn't lock in. What's the best way to solve the problem?
Yes I have the same issue. I also noticed that when at a stoplight the gps will drift which causes maps to recaculate routes.

I don't see the USB icon after pluggning the cable. Anyone seeing this issue?
Preface: I was rooted with lagfix using OCLF. Prior to the OTA, I unrooted & uninstalled lagfix. My phone got locked up in Vibrant/Samsung screen during the OTA installtion like many others.
I used Odin to return the phone to stock, then download & flashed the JI6 file using Odin. GPS, compass, Task Manager, HD Camcorder, Youtube HD, Media Hub, etc are working fine ... however, no USB icon.
Has anyone else still not received this update?
People put your phone into fight mode and see how accurate GPS is after
Mine works perfectly, I am digging this update specially the new task manager. I can't wait for froyo.

TouchScreen issue resolved in gingerbread?

So before the gingerbread update i was experiencing the nexus one touch screen issue. This issue would happen mostly when the phone would be charging or warm, and the y coordinate of the touch screen would be off by about an inch. (I would post a link to youtube but i can't yet... new member =/ ) So if you try to answer your phone while the defect was active, you couldnt, because touching the slider would be recognized as trying to touch the 'menu' key on the phone.
Anyway, after gingerbread got pushed to my device, i have yet to experience this issue!! i havent been able to find anyone reporting this resolution. i'm extremely please about this because it was becoming a deal breaker after i missed an important call because i couldnt answer my phone due to the issue!!
anyone else experiencing this resolution!?
In my experiences it does still occur, although seemingly less frequently. It is a hardware problem though so probably won't disappear regardless of the OS

Observed no difference. The bug still appears every now and then. Doesn't bother me much because it usually occurs when the phone's charging. Not when I'm on the street using it. I heard that removing any kind of screen protectors can actually solve this problem.

I had it terribly after the GB OTA, I wiped cache & dalvik and it all but went away. One occurrence in a week and a half, and I've been using the crap out of the phone.
Slightly off topic question: On stock Android, is wiping cache the same as wiping the dalvik cache? The stock recovery doesn't have the "wipe dalvik" option, only "wipe cache".
No it's not, but if you have root you can wipe it manually by removing the contents /data/dalvik-cache/

Thanks. But every time you flash an official update, the cache gets wiped and rebuilt though, right? That's why after each update it takes a long time to boot.
I still have the touchscreen issue. i think it will never be solved because it's an hardware issue, not a software one.
So the problem still appears, maybe a little less frequently.
I still have the prob but it's different with 2.3
Before 2.3, the touchscreen problem was unpredictable and could happen at almost anytime, whether charging or not. I replaced the handset but the problem persisted.
Since upgrading to GB, I've noticed a very clear pattern. If I'm charging my device and unplug it before it is fully charged, the touchscreen becomes extremely erratic to the point I must reboot the phone. If it's allowed to charge completely it's okay.
It never happens when it's is not charging.
Still annoying as hell but I've moved to Africa and having the device replaced is a real challenge. So I guess I'm stuck with until I replace it.
Still has issue
Stock, no modification at all. Today when I was rearranging icons in ADW Launcher, it seems that the screen registered click below where my finger actually was, same as the problem I saw previous to updating to 2.3.3. The phone was not hooked to a charger at the time.
Stock GRI40 here on my Nexus One...same issues that i've already had with Froyo. As it was posted before, it's a hardware issue; and the Nexus S is the new kid on Google's block, so i'm not expecting anything to improve our screens.

Theoretically, there is a chance they could fix a software workaround for the hardware problem. If the error happens in only specific circumstances, and ALWAYS happens in those circumstances, then just teach the phone to know when those circumstances are happening, and tell it what to do in those cases. However, I doubt anyone at Google is working too hard on this problem. I agree, it seems to be much less frequent than it ever was. Seems likely that they may have added a little something to help us out.

Or more likely, it could be unintentional.
So even with official OTA it's still here?
Remember me of the ''crazy'' screen problem we had before while charging, perhaps it's a hardware problem after all
This is a main reason why tomorrow i'm getting a new galaxy s.
I tried a lot of custom and stock roms, I sent my phone to HTC and they replaced hardware, but this issue still persist. And it cause me a lot of problems, especially while driving...
I also still get that glitch but not as frequently. I noticed that i didn't need to reboot the phone to fix it. All i need to do is tap the power button to shutoff the screen and then re-tap to turn it back on and it'll show the lock screen. Slide to unlock and the screen is precise once again.
The bug is still there for me also. However, I didn't seem to have it as bad as some did originally, and now I've noticed that it's happening even less frequently.

After Flashing to Overcome 1.2.1....GPS is not working correctly.

Ever since I flashed to Overcome 1.2.1 the GPS has been VERY wonky and just plain WRONG. Maps says that I am in the next TOWN which is a good ways away.
GPS Locks are extremely few as well and takes forever to lock on to.
Can anyone else confirm this and or help?
Bumping this up.
When you flashed, did you wipe your cache? With a new rom it always takes a while to reaquire your location. I use the app HereIAm2 from the market to get that first position lock after a rom flash.
Yes I did wipe the caches. Will try that app out if it is free.
Thanks.
EDIT: Noticed that the compass seems to be very inaccurate as well. Weird.

Oh well, that's the least of my probs;-/
i have installed OC 1.2.1 and at one point the whole tab became very sluggish....and all sort of issues appeared such as slow browsing.......then the tab would simply freeze! Reboot did not help at all....
I have since installed OC 1.2.3 with the new kernel and it went ok-ish. But today after rebooting i have all sort of errors (broken messaging service, when i click on the wifi tab to switch on, it says 'error'.etc).
I wonder if others have this sort of probs. I cannot understand how it can work fine for a few hours and then.....kkkkkkkk.
I have the UK tab version with firmware JK5; Also cannot figure it out why it does not show 'overcome v1.2.3 on the build number...it still shows v1.2.1, kernel overcome 97.
I'll have to reflash the lot now.......how annoying.
I am sorry that you are having problems. However hijacking threads is frowned upon here.....

The app is free.
How many roms have you flashed? Maybe it's time to do a factory reset, then flash the full version of the rom/kernal.
Well it did the trick and put me in the correct spot but the compass is still completely wonky.
Oh and this is the first ROM I have flashed. Overcome 1.2.1.
There are apps in the market for that. You want to calibrate the compass, so look for a gps utility. Sorry I don't have one to recommend to you.
Not a problem. I appreciate your advice and welcome any others as well.
One thought about the compass - do you have your tab in a case with a magnetic clip?
Mine works fine out of the leather case, but not when it is in the case.
Just a thought.
No I don't.
To test the GPS to see if there was any interference I put my iPhone 4 into compass mode in maps and did the same with the Tab using the Maps program.
The iPhone 4 was spot on....however the Tab was wrong yet again.
So that means there is no interference.
I am stumped here....and the recalibrate apps did not work either.
Just thought I would try a catch-up.
Since my last comment I moved from Rotos JMIv2 to Overcome 1.2.3 and my GPS also stopped. After 24 hours however, I have got it going through a the use of GPS Status (free from the market) and the LbsTestMode which you can access either through a dialler code or through SGS Toolbox, also free from the market.
To cut the story short, I went from just finding about 3 satelites (with no connectoins), to finding and connecting 10 satelites.
I must say that I am very happy with the current ROM and with the GPS Status program.
Hope this helps if you are still having problems.

[Q] GPS reset utility?

Does anyone know of a utility to reset the internal GPS completely?
I use location-based tools all the time, and this annoying GPS failure in EC05 is a real PITA.
I know some folks have had some luck doing a "cold start" using the GPS Status utility, but this has not worked for me.
Symptoms are that the GPS works fine for a while, then loses lock. Going into GPS status reveals no satellites visible at all, and the GPS icon on the notification bar is gone..
Using Menu/Tools/Manage A-GPS state I have tried both reseting the state (cold start) and downloading assistance data. Turning the GPS off and on again also does nothing. OTOH, if I simply reboot the phone, the GPS comes back right away.
Many have reported this issue was fixed in EB13, but came back in EC05. I'm running SRF 1.1 right now, but I also had this problem in the stock EC05 that I received OTA.
Having the GPS just work properly all the time would be ideal. But short of that, being able to restart it from scratch without having to reboot the phone would be an acceptable workaround. Even a command-line utility would be better than nothing.
-Sean
It's aggravating... I have the issue and I too am waiting for some kind of fix/workaround.
I use my GPS at my evening job pretty extensively. I suffered from this issue on DI18 ROMs daily, but I haven't experienced it yet since the dk17 froyo beta.
Exact same problems here. I am on Bonsai 4 but have also had the same problem with all the other EC05 roms I've flashed and the stock EC05. It was fantastic while it was working in EB13.

It came back in ec05 because people didn't use the fixes we used in going from di18 > dk28 > eb13. Search these threads and do what we did and you won't have the problem either.

I was on whatever the stock Eclair release was out of the box -- bought the phone literally the day after Sprint suspended the EB13 OTA rollout.
I got EC05 pushed to me OTA a month later. GPS had the same issue on Eclair and EC05.
To get from the OTA EC05 to SRF I had to Odin back to EB13, but I only had EB13 on the phone for a few minutes -- did not test the GPS behavior.

I've tried a few things.. but at present, I went back to stock Eclair through Odin, then took the OTA to EC05.
Basically, I installed clean, so it's a mystery to me why others don't have this. Actually I think quite a few do, but haven't realized it yet... because the first time you get a fix after boot, it works magnificently well... 3-10 seconds. Great.
It's the down time after that, the hours that pass after that first fix that seems to change things. Without doing anything specific, just using the browser and other things.. the ability to AGAIN get a fix is hindered. Sometimes the GPS doesn't get one at all.
I'll let all the smart guys work on this one. I'm just a competent end user with no real knowledge of how the GPS works.
Just wanted to chime in..
I was waiting for someone to bring up this issue. Symptoms identical to OP's. Stock eclair worked perfectly, and this problem appeared in eb13, after a manual update. Ec05 did not change a thing and Gps status cold start did not help either.
This sucks since I use gps all the time.

Just wanted to chime in..
I was waiting for someone to bring up this issue. Symptoms identical to OP's. Stock eclair worked perfectly, and this problem appeared in eb13, after a manual update. Ec05 did not change a thing and Gps status cold start did not help either.

As I noted above, I'm not a real gifted technician.. but I'm guessing this issue has something to do with the internal compass. I noticed that my two co-workers who both bought the Epic based on their favorable impressions of my phone, had issues with screen rotation after going from stock Eclair to EC05. Neither are advanced users. Neither rooted or otherwise messed with their phones. I too have tinkered with the compass.. the upside-down calibration and the terminal command pertaining to Yamaha.
I can effect the quality and time of the fix by waving the phone in a figure eight pattern in an attempt to calibrate.. so I'm thinking it's all related.
Running SFR 1.1.0 and I haven't experienced this yet. Took a three hour walk yesterday and CardioTrainer locked me the entire time even through the trails.
How long does it usually take for GPS to lose lock?
If it matters, I only enable GPS, not network-based location.

On DI18 based ROM's, the GPS data cache would not flush itself properly and you would lose GPS functionality usually within hours after it seemed to be working fine. My evening job I work as a delivery driver, and I would have to reboot my phone a couple times a night because of this bug. But as I stated earlier in this thread, I have not experienced this bug since dk17. I did experience some issues in DK28 where the GPS signal would drop out for a few seconds here and there, but since EB13, it's been perfect. No issues. My other Epic is stock EC05, so I will run some tests with that one tonight to see if I can get it to foul up.
So is anyone running Bonsai 4 experiencing this problem at all?
My understanding is that Bonsai uses an EB13-based kernel with only select EC05 elements, so perhaps it is not prone to this issue. If that's the case, that may be enough to make me switch to Bonsai from SRF.
It would also appear that the problem is not universal across all EC05 (and EC05-based ROM) users, as there have been several reports in this and other threads from people with no GPS problems at all. This makes me wonder, among other things, whether or not some specific app or module is either causing (or clearing?) the problem. Since lots of folks on stock OTA have the issue, that would likely be an OEM app.
This problem is a real PITA for me as I use the GPS all the time. Really, really want to find a solution.

I'm currently running on one of my Epics a modified version of Bonsai 4.0.1, which is fully EC05 based, and I'm not having any gps problems.

Does anyone know of a utility to reset the internal GPS completely?

If you just want to reset your GPS cache data, there is an onboard utility invoked by a dialer code. Open your phone dialer and punch in
##GPSCLRX#
That opens a dialog that requires you to key in the MSL code for your phone. Normally the Sprint support desk has to give this to you. (If they do, write it down for future use.) There are other methods to find the MSL, including this one.

Thanks for that data point, but I was really asking about stock Bonsai, since if I switch, that's where I'd go.

Thanks, I have the MSL. I've also now placed a shortcut on the home screen directly to this utility, which actually bypasses the MSL. From Launcher Pro, long press on a blank area then select Shortcuts/Activities/com.android.hiddenmenu/GPSCLRX.
We'll see if using this GPSCLRX utility brings the GPS back to life next time it locks up.
While I am on the hiddenmenu subject, does anyone know which module is the GPSsetup utility? Supposedly this ships with the phone, and was previously (pre-Froyo) invoked with the dialer code *#1472365# but, according to threads on some other Galaxy-S forums, Samsung changed the code due to customer abuse. The alleged replacement code does not work for me, and I've tried all the obvious modules in hiddenmenu with no success.
In the interim, I've flashed LBSTestMode, which seems to work fine for reading and testing the GPS chipset, but is purportedly for a different chipset and so it is not clear if it can actually change settings (see androidforums.com/samsung-epic-4g/308885-gps-aquistion-ec05.html).

Does nothing show up in LauncherPro with a name like GPSSetup or GPSsetup?

I could not find anything. The only Activity I saw with GPS in the name was the aforementioned GPSCLRX. However I should note that I am on SRF 1.1.0, and it is possible that K0nane removed this module from the ROM. Does anyone know if it is in the stock EC05 build? Also, what's the .apk named, so I can try to find it and load it?
