Is there no other way to get the phone out of idle then pressing the button on the top of the phone?
it is a pain in the ass.
I agree, its not the most convenient.
Pressing the tracker ball does it for me.

You'll get used to it in no time!
Trackball method does not work for me.
doesnt work for me either, the tracker ball would be nice...
did you change an option for that?
The track ball doest do it for me either. I don't mind using the button on top of the phone. I've always used HTC phones and a lot of them use the button on top to wake it up. You should get used to it pretty quick.
Damn, I was hoping the trackball would work... I disliked this about the Droid as well. It takes two hands to unlock the phone, doesn't it? The G1 and MT3G methods were better.
shouldn't we be able to remap the button pressed to work with the trackball? (with root access that is)
i agree...im not liking the top button to wake up the phone...trackball does not wake it for me either...
CLOCK APP
I just realized if you open the clock application, and let the phone go to sleep, then you can "Turn it on" with the trackball or volume rocker.
Now if there was a way to have the phone set to "Sleep = Clock" we'd be golden; the clock screen doen't look that bad, either.
I will say, the button placement on the top is much better than the Motorola droid. I was worried myself, but I got used to it super fast, and it isn't an issue at all.
(Former G1 owner, used to just pressing menu twice)
Just download "Keyguard Disabler" from the Android Market. It will allow you to use the trackball to turn the screen back on.
The screen is capacitive touch, and so is the "hardware" buttons.
If you want to be able to power up the phone from sleep with these buttons, that would require the capacitive touchscreen to be active while the phone is sleeping.
Wouldn't that affect the battery life?

Agreed. look here too: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=613864&page=2
David1171 has a partial solution. Problem is I'm guessing, that there is no way to setup a double tap. Maybe someone knows.
I'm hoping that a future release of spare parts will have a setting for both a double or triple tap of the track bar to wake up, with or without the slide lock. ( I think that the slide lock would be less annoying if the track ball woke it up first instead of the poorly located power button) Also I am hoping that it will have settings to adjust the trackball notification flash speed and color for different google apps.
Just to let you know:
There is a thread about the trackball for wakeup thing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5337345
I got used to it pretty fast, its funny my other phone is a G1 and i find myself trying to unlock it by pushing up top all the time now haha, just become instinct.
I've heard a lot of people say they have trouble unlocking the Nexus One with one hand, but personally I have no trouble unlocking the device with one hand... with either hand.

This person does not own a Nexus One.
Lockbot from market. Don't need pro, the free version will do.
Dunno why they copied the iPhone with the slide to unlock, with the magic its so easy you press the power button which is near the trackball then press menu.
It would be great if you could just press trackball then menu button to unlock.
Alright well i've got android 2.2 installed via NAND. 10 times a day at least, the Bluetooth Voice Dialer pops up, and somehow disables my camera (back) button. It even stops my device from going to sleep. after about 5 or 10 minutes it will eventually go to sleep, i then press the power button up top to wake it up, the lock pattern is displayed. i can hit the camera (back) button then and then enter the pattern to unlock it and the back button works again.
its really frustrating, i cant find anything on the internets about it and my logfiles aren't revealing anything. has anyone had a similar problem?
bump bump bump. getting really frustrated. i've gotta use other peoples phones half the time because mine bullshits around like this. _any_ ideas?

Which rom are you using?
This just started yesterday but the bottom of my screen (the side where the serial port is) seems to be less responsive than normally. When I go to click to respond to a text message I find myself having to press it repeatedly. Sometimes the whole screen becomes un-responsive or if I click up top it will actually make a response at the bottom. Could this be at all due to an app or something I installed? Because normally when I put it on standby (pressing the power button once) and turn it back on it will fix it all but the unresponsive bottom section for texting only. Does this make sense to anyone why this could be happening?
Just having touch problems all together
i keep pressing the screen so many timees... even tried to restart and take the battery out. but still same problems
any help
Thanks
Try recalibrating the touch screen guys, that might help. Also if you have a screen protector on, try removing it, I found my first one got more unresponsive over time.
I dont like screen protectors for that very reason and dont use them. But where is the screen recalibration? I've looked and looked for it since this started happening. It's half way working now and really just varies. So if there is a way to calibrate I really feel like that would fix it. Thanks!!

yeah mine did that and calibration fixed it.
power it off, hold down both volume buttons and power it on, holding down all three until the menu appears.
Choose option 3 and away you go!
hth....
Haha, this completely fixed it!!! I'm so excited right now becaus I was terrified I did something to it. It works perfectly again. Thank you guys so much!!!

It's nice to be able to give some advice that works for a change
So I've noticed that if I leave my phone on for a long period of time. Usually for over a day that when I go to text someone the keyboard will lock up or be distorted. Such as if you try to turn the phone sideways only half the keyboard will be there and samething when you turn it back. Or the keyboard will be there but when you push the keys nothing works or responds. Sometimes the keyboard wont even be present and I can't type a single thing. I can back out of it and use my phone like normal. The only way I've found to fix this issue is to just power off the phone and start it back up again. Let me know if anyone else has a solution to this problem or has experienced it.
I just experienced this last night only what happend to me was my key presses were being registered way above or below where I was typing. Soon as I turned it off tho it went away.

Anyone having an unresponsive (to touch) screen when the a500 wakes up?
I thought it was just me or the rom i had or some app doing it but a coworker just got his a500, hasnt installed anything really and is not rooted.
I can sometimes push the sleep/power button a few times and it will come to life but not always.
I think twice i have had to use the hard reset button.
Almost seems as if the screen is not responding to touch when you wake it up and it has to rotate the screen to the orientation you are holding it, but that is 100% speculation and i only say that because the l9ckscreen is unresponsive

Once in a while. Usually only when the device has been asleep for a long time. Not sure how to prevent this issue - i usually find hitting the power button a few times clears it up, but I have been forced to reboot from the issue once in a while.
