[Q] Anything more needed after GPS fix?

I have a non-rooted Vibrant. After the OTA J16 fix a couple of weeks ago, the GPS went from non-functional (hardly ever locked on any satellites, even after many minutes) to quite good (usually locks on 6-9 satellites within 10-30 seconds). The Google Navigation works well and stays on track 99% of the time. However, Google Earth seems a little wonky. It can locate me in my neighborhood and usually within my 1-acre yard, but, after I'm located, it can begin to wander around by 100-200 feet even when I'm standing still...not always, but sometimes. Am I expecting more than I should?
I know how to get into my GPS settings with the dialer. Is there any point in clearing the GPS data? I assumed that the J16 update would have reset this. I'm generally happy with the GPS function now, but wonder if there is anything more I should do now that it works pretty well.

Can we take another run at this?

How good can the GPS in a smartphone be? Do any of you have any model of phone where the GPS is blazingly fast to lock, never gets lost or off track, and is always dead-on? Since the Vibrant is my first phone with GPS, the only thing I have to compare it to is my Garmin navigation unit, which is less-than-perfect.
So, can anyone give me a reality check or a realistic set of expectations? Thanks.

After the J16 update, my Vibe's GPS is a bit better than my G1's GPS. Both are lightyears ahead of my girlfriends TomTom.

after the update, my GPS still does not work. I think the GPS is just absolutely horrible and I really do hope they release a new software fix because the ji6 did nothing for me.
to compare, my g2 was able to find my location within 5 seconds. in terms of my location, it was pretty dead on within a few feet, and also accuarate in the direction I was facing.

All my Nokia phones had great GPS. Locks were pretty fast, but they were dead on and I don't remember ever losing the signal outside.

I haven't had to use the gps much since fixed, but it locks on in a reasonable amount of time now and within 20 feet usually. What I don't know yet is if it stays locked on while driving.
To be honest though, it's still much better than the magellan gps I bought last November. That thing wouldnt lock on unless I was out on the road. Not inside my house right up against a window, not under a carport. I'm satisfied for now as long as it stays locked when I use it for roadtrips.

If that is what you looking at, I haven't seen one GPS unit in any store with an acquired signal.

I guess the title says it all. Has the official UK froyo release fixed the GPS?

I don't know about fixed but mine is certainly a lot better. It no longer loses lock every 5 mins or so using route tracker pro. and it turns back on properly after using waze - so averall a great improvement.

Suggest you get something else if GPS is important to you because it is absolutely crap on the Galaxy S. It is inaccurate and will jump back and forth at regular intervals. It will also lose lock very easily if there are high buildings around. I can't even get a lock sitting on the top deck of a bus and next to the window.

I'm not so worried by how long it takes to lock, more-so by how it keeps the lock and can track an accurate location.
I'm assuming it is still all over the place then.

you are right, useless for what you need.

Why not RMA, ask for a new built phone, test GPS and report back?. I'm sure it will be ok in most cases. It looks like it was fixed on later hardware but no one is going to make Samsung admit it

No here too, better but still tracks really badly at times. Will look into an rma when I get some time to. Pity because apart from the gps I really rate this phone.

Well, so far, based on my experience in the last 3 days, it is better. At least it seems like it is. I used RunKeeper quite a lot before, the tracks showed me flying over the river and stuff like that, but after I got FroYo, it got better. My tracks are more exact and it seems the GPS reception is not lost, like it used to. We will see how it will go on...

Huge no. It takes sometimes up to half an hour to get lock and then only lasts mins.
Add to that the advertised (here in australia anyway) free navigation which does not work here (no, google maps is not free navigation, its google maps. Navigation is navigation). Its an awesome phone but, and i may regret saying this. The horribly slow, misleadingly advertised, failure of a phone nokia N97 wins on delivering gps by a long shot. There i said it, its out there.

Those of you that know me here will know I have dedicated a large slice of my spare time in trying to find out as much information as possible.
Throughout that time my GPS was totally useless running on one of the very first SGS's released in the UK.
Anyway, I altered nothing on the phone left it on it's stock ROM and did the upgrade last Saturday.
In short Kies totally wrecked the phone and I had to resort to using Odin to sort out the mess.
I've since told Samsung exactly what happened and my thoughts to Kies.
However, you are asking what is the GPS like.......
I have nothing to gain. Far from it I would be at the very front in damning Samsung for using Kies but the honest answer from me on GPS is for the very first time I can say I totally am impressed with it.
Whilst sat in my home, a good 10 feet away from the window in a large house with thick walls and three floors I get a lock within seconds and notice again for the first time many locked Satellites with signals above AND below 20SNR, yes below 20... (Prior to the upgrade not once did I receive a locked signal on anything other than above 20).
More importantly under My Tracks the lock follows my movements accurately and not once loses it's signal.
I took the dogs out this afternoon for a long walk and each time I checked the phone I noticed the compass showing the correct bearing and the GPS signal right bang on top of my position.

No... bought a SGS in the UK last month and have been using it in Brazil. GPS has been completely useless for me. Froyo seemed to help at fist, but yesterday it took over 20 minutes to lock in google navigation. Terrible!!!

Easy to get a lock whilst walking, when i get in my car it becomes near useless.

Got a gs2 and still have my incredible s so I tested GPS precision: got 4 meters for the HTC and not stable and lower precision 18/20 meters on gs2.
Is something adjustable with new kernels?
Another two questions : about voice low quality ( someone said that it depends from noise reduction filet) and low volume during a call are these issues already addressed by some roms?
Low volume and quality with earphones is addressed too?

GPS is a disappointment. On my old pda asus a696 precision is much better. I wish gps was working better for me, I use it with sport tracking software. I changed ntp server, played with all kinds of gps apps, updated AGPS data, helped a bit but fix is still slow and precision is almost always more then 30m.
If anybody saw an improvement on some ROM or kernel, please let me know.

No as no reported flaw in GPS so nothing with GPS altered that i have seen.

i am honestly very disappointed with the sgs2's gps precision. tested it side by side with the HTC Chacha...rebooted, cleared gps data and redownloaded it (Gps status app), then run test on both devices for abt 2-3 mins.
SGS2 7/7 satelites, error 40m!!!
HTC Chacha 10/10 satelites, error 6-10m!!!
frm both rooted 2.3.4 and stock firmware ...

I agree that the precision (error) is bad on the S2. However, in my experience, when I open maps and look at the location, it seems to be just about dead on. Meaning, even though there is often a blue circle, the center of the circle is extremely close to my actual position. So, I think the issue may be with how the phone calculates the "error" and not with any real inaccuracy. It feels like the reported error value is double what it should really be based on my position on google maps. This is just my experience, ymmv.

I agree with this. I was puzzled at first too when I looked at the accuracy reading, but then I realized that the actual positioning was much better than the reported 'error margin'.
The GPS itself is fine, but whatever algorithm they use to report accuracy is flawed..or should I say, could be better.

GPS accuracy is a statistical estimate of the maximum error and many assumptions must be made when calculating this, and I don't think different manufactureres does this in the same way.
So a HTC could very well report better accuracy than SGS2 but provide worse position (or vice versa).
Here is an interesting article about GPS accuracy, it mainly concerns static accuracy (reported accuracy in specifications), but the problems are basically the same for dynamic accuracy.

When I've logged driving on a highway with SGS2 (with my tracks, i e no map matching or other filtering) the position is often within the correct lane but still SGS2 reports 10 meter accuracy (good GPS reception). But once in a while the position drifts a bit further away, mabe 5-10 meters. I would guess I get similar results with other modern smart phones with good GPS even if they report 4 meter accuracy. What phone is wrong in this case? The one reporting 4 meter accuracy that often is correct or the one reporting 10 meters that is even more often correct?
So please compare the phones by logging routes simultanously with "my tracks" instead. I've seen very few tests doing this, and SGS2 seems to do very well in the few tests I've seen

But not only the accuracy is an issue but initial fix is very slow compared to other phones. Even in hotstart mode when it had fix ten minutes ago it still most times takes over a minute to get a fix vs 7 to 10 secs on my Sgs 1

I had this problem and found that disabling wifi with data enabled led to much faster first fixes - I assume because the a-GPS data could be obtained more quickly direct from the carrier rather than over the wifi?
Also my UK phone shipped with a US NTP time server. I have since rooted and used GPS Aids to change this and refresh the other GPS data and now have no problems getting a first fix, usually in under 10 seconds.

Last week i traveled to Bosnia and used GPS on my SGS2 for the first time. I have only good words for it as with IGo it was very accurate (in a meter).But as i see with Google maps app GPS is wrong up to 20m.

I was also concerned about the gps first cause it seemed to show very inaccurate results and I have used gps with running a lot. However after using it to track my tracks I have to say that its 98% perfect. Also used it to navigate while driving and its also perfect. Samsung has just done something which makes it look like it would be more inaccurate but reality it is not.

same here. I tested GPS performance a few times when i was walking (relatively static), the error was never under 10 meters, however it did not have a problem tracking my position.
In the other hand, I did have some long long GPS locks from time to time, once in a while the GPS just cannot seem to find my position, despite the fact that I am standing outdoors with no tall buildings around.
Overall experience, just acceptable.

[Q]Anyone else having GPS concerns vs. Note 2 & Note 1?

I am having GPS/GLONASS accuracy issues. Especially when compared to my stellar Note 1 and Note 2. Whether using Google Maps or GPS Test app it seems much weaker and tends to wander/waiver especially when stationary. I have always kept network assistance turned off for better accuracy at the expense of initial lock speed.
I use Navionics app for boating and a couple of athletic training apps that depend on best accuracy.
GPS radio/antenna appears to go to sleep in less than two minutes while screen still awake. Power saving mode is turned off. Indoors Google Maps was comparable with TMo display. Will compare with Best Buy's and a couple of AT&T COR store displays before returning. Just disappointed with my new flagship : (

Just what I didn't want to read. My new Note 3 has the same issues. I actually had to ship it off for repairs because the GPS was so terribly bad. Comparing with my S4 it is just broken. Lets just hope it is not a design flaw but a problem with some devices only.

I cannot agree.
I were hunting for 10 hours yesterday, logging 20km with barometric altitude using Oruxmaps.
The GPS worked fine and I spent about half the battery the entire trip (>12hrs)
Ingress appears also to be very precise and nice, I do not see any difference fomr Note2 - except that barometric sensor had a slow refresh-rate with display off on GN2, now it's fast.

Got a new replacement which is much better.

I tested with GPS test and an got accuracy of 3 meters which is damn fine if you ask me. Never seen it below 5 meters before...

Same problem with my Tmobile note 3. Using GPS test app I show far less signal strength then the note 2 which had the best GPS reception I've seen on a phone. Having much difficulty locking on to a fix in the Learjet. The note 2 had no problem! Kind of sucks. New technology shouldn't be a step back.
Going to go ahead and exchange at the store.

I am finding it very hard to get GPS lock with this device

The T-Mobile store had me compare mine to the unit in store. Same deal. I think it's a design flaw. The note 2 was so much better at receiving gps signals. Oh well, I guess they want to leave a reason to justify the note 4.

Location works fine, but the compass is way off. When walking it points about 100 degrees to the wrong site. The map does not show the road ahead but the road sideways.
This is true even in a train. Moving at 100km/h should give you a good clue of what North is, but it's still pointing wrong.
Hoping this will get fixed in an antenna firmware upgrade... !

I noticed that too! Note 2 was way better! I think you're right about the compass calibration. Is there a way to calibrate it?

If I lean the phone forward, and then back up, I could rotate the compass 180 degrees.
Found a solution now! I downloaded the "GPS Status & Toolbox" from "MobiWIA - EclipSim", and ran Tools -> Calibrate Compass. The compass is much more stable now!

It seems that gps issue affects only some phones.
other have reported here that the gps reception on their Note 3's is good.
On my SM-N900T the reception is stellar!
(about the same as on my note II)

I tested the gps reception on my Note 3 and Note 2 in my back yard to give the report that I did in the above post
but since then I have traveled by airplane and can now report that neither my Note 2 or Note 3 could get a fix while the plane was at altitude but my Galaxy S4 did get a fix without too much difficulty.
On the ground all three of these instruments will get a fix about the same time and have generally the same accuracy - except that the Galaxy S4 according to the app GPS Test will have maybe one or more satellites in view and also have one or more satellites in use - but to reiterate - according to my quick tests the accuracy on the ground is about the same in all 3 devices.

I can almost confirm that the issue is related to the Compass.
Today I was in tram, and I suddenly lost lock. In GPS test it was showing only 1 satellite "in sight" and could not lock, which was wrong. The compass was also pointing the wrong way. After I shaked a bit the phone, it suddenly switched back to a normal position, 21 satellites in sight and quickly locked.
I will try to take a screenshot next time it happens
Is this worth a send-in for repair?

Did a compass calibration and it seems stable but still no fix. N900W8.
EDIT: I am starting to think its a hardware problem. Outdoors it does work but takes a long time for a fix, and the SNR is low compared to my S II or Note II.

It's not enough to do compass calibration "once" with a program.
Whenever you are in the app that must achieve a lock, while it is trying, take the phone and rotate it a couple of times with the wrist. The compass should snap back to the appropriate value and you should quickly get a lock.
I reckon that the SNR maybe lower. I know for a fact that it's lower than the Tab2 7" which, in turn, has the best signal of any phone I've compared with, including Note2 and S2.
Nontheless since I do the compass trick I get reasonable lock speed and accuracy in most conditions. On the open the lock is almost instantaneous.

There is definitely a problem both with the GPS AND the data connection on the Note 3 vs. the Note 2!
I drive a tractor-trailer for a living and use Google Navigation constantly to find my destinations (I know it's routed for automobiles and not trucks; I'm intelligent enough to NOT drive my tractor-trailer down a road it's telling me to go down that I shouldn't!) - the Note 3 is CONSTANTLY losing it's GPS lock, and displays "Searching for GPS" on the screen. The only way I can get it back is to turn off GPS and then turn it back on. Then it'll sometimes work for just a couple of minutes, or a couple of hours before it happens again. Most of the time it's just 5-10 minutes before it loses GPS lock again. My Note 2 NEVER, not even once, did this!
I live in Phoenix, AZ and drive to Las Vegas several times a week to make deliveries. There are large areas where there's no data connection at all, and in some areas where my Note 2 had a 4G connection, the Note 3 has NO data connection whatsoever! And, I'm not talking a couple of miles here; I'm talking at least a 30 or 40 mile stretch of US 93.
Yesterday, I was driving across I-40 west in New Mexico, on my way back from Wichita, KS, and Google Navigation, when it was working, looked terrible on the screen - the roads were all fuzzy and "bloated" because, apparently, it wasn't downloading all the map data.
My Note 3 experience so far has been terrible (I'm experiencing a myriad of other problems, too - TERRIBLE Bluetooth call audio; sounds on the phone, except for my music being played through PowerAmp, just stopped working, even though ALL volumes were at maximum, had to reboot to get them working; screen is "jittery" when typing, it'll sometimes type multiple characters as if I'm rapidly pressing the keys, etc, etc!); I'm returning it today to AT&T for another one. If I have problems with that one, though, I'm returning it for another Note 2!
This makes me VERY sorry I sold my Note 2 on Craigslist!

That is essentially what's happening with my ATT Note3.
GPS just drops in the middle of navigating; the notification-bar icon just goes away. I have to toggle GPS off and back on for it to work again. While it's working, it never works well; there's at least a 15sec 'lag' time from when I move to when the screen actually updates my position - but it never truly gets a precise location. I can go to a specific location 5 different times and I'll be 15 yards away in different directions each time.
This is in any of the various mapping/navigation/gps apps, but is most notable infuriating while Ingressing.

Weird that has never happened to me. Perhaps there is a background app that makes some confusion. I have extensively tested the GPS in the last days and I confirm that the only problem that I have is with the compass, rotating the phone a couple of times makes the GPS works fine. The navigation is very good so far. However this was always in the city where the reception is good and the 4G connection is always present.

Oneplus 5 GPS Issues

Hey guys. Is anyone having accuracy and connectivity issues with the GPS? I had a couple of times where I just lost signal and it kept showing me like an arrow on the map with no directions or anything. I have just reset the AGPS and cleared cache. Will update the results. I'm running stock without root or anything.

Yes. I'm running stock and I have a decent amount of GPS drift and sometimes it cuts out. The drift is somewhat annoying when playing Pokemon Go as it moves me away from the gym and I have to exit walk a bit and then try again.

Ingress player here, I have zero issues with GPS. It is very accurate.

That's the word - GPS drift! I'm having that with Google maps and Waze both.

Yes, mine drifts too. But I am using Google maps indoors - so maybe that's why.

I ran the GPS sensor test (in dialer, type *#808# then choose GPS from the list) and I got "Failed - 20 seconds has passed" See photos attached.

Yeah. I wouldn't worry about GPS drift if you are inside. I get it outside in the wide open areas.

Yes. Same here. While driving.

It's not a bug. Oneplus has poor gps signal. I had a gunmetal 3T and out was bad. Had midnight black 3T and it was also bad. So I'm not doubting that the op5 is bad as well.

I used my OP5's GPS with Google maps and Waze to go to holidays and it was a nightmare. Hope it'll be reported and fixed soon

That's weird you all have been having issues because mine has been great. I've been using maps or Waze everyday for the last week with no issues at all

I line half way between Philly and Baltimore and had to drive to Westminster MD on Friday. It was an hour and 30 min each way and maps was on point. No drift and GPS lock is writing 3 seconds each time I try it now. I'll have to pay attention as I have another 3 hours of driving tomorrow.

My husband and I each bought a OP5 on announcement day. We've had them less than a week, and are pretty happy with them, but we've both noticed at home that it often reports us as being in Irving, TX, when we live nowhere near. Odd that both phones, unboxed and turned on at the same time, would report at the same incorrect place. It's causing our geo-fenced security system to go bonkers.
I chatted in (I know...but I was hoping!) with OP customer care and their idea was to hard reset. On a phone that has been in use less than a week. When I pushed on that a bit she asked if I'm still within my 15 days.
ETA: I did a GPS check, and it was perfectly acceptable. Even inside, showed the correct location. No idea why it randomly decided we're in another state. Could be more WiFi related than phone, but never noticed it until we got the OP5s.

I drove 1.5 hours today and used maps the entire time. I never noticed anything odd. I dropped GPS signal when I entered the Fort Mchenry Bay tunnel (under water) which is to be expected but came back instantly exiting the tunnel.
So I'd have to say my GPS is working great

I use the phone's GPS with a running program as I did with my previous Nexus 5. I can say that the OP5 indicates that the first mile is significantly longer than with the Nexus 5. I assumed that this was due to a more accurate modern GPS sensor. Now I'm not so sure.
To be fair the Nexus 5 varied a number of yards day to day but on average the OP5 is significantly different than the Nexus 5's measurement.

I have switched over from an LG Nexus 5 as well and have been noticing some oddities as well.
I never use my phone as a guidance system, but have been using it with Strava a lot.
What I've noticed:
- doing rides with a couple of other people, my distance and height is always a lot more than the others. Yesterday's 100k ride with 800height difference was only 95km for the others and 730-750 height for the others (using Garmin and Nexus 5).
- I managed to get a KOM by riding up a steep hill at 46.9kmp. In reality I stayed behind another rider the whole time who actually only did 14kmp on average...
- when looking at the map result I don't see any big deviation, but when zooming in I sometimes see it jump around off the actual path taken.
The phone itself is great, but this is a huge issue for me. I hope there will be a fix of some kind if possible.

Have been using GPS a lot with Endomondo, Google Fit, Google Maps and Sygic while driving and GPS is fast and accurate on OnePlus 5. Not had any issues. I have 4G data always on maybe this helps somewhat.
