After a couple days of normal use I started getting frustrated that my battery wasn't lasting very long and that Android System was consistently the top entry on the battery use screen. Time for some investigation.
I got adb working and logcat revealed that my phone was doing a lot of network location fixes. One would trigger every couple minutes even when the phone was sleeping.
I turned off network location and the results are stunning. With two hours off the charger so far this morning, my battery still says 100%. Cell standby and Phone idle are now my top battery use entries, with Android System a distant third.
The problem, of course, is that I like using network location. On demand GPS fixes are slow and do not work in many of the places I want to use location. I want to figure out if the G2's Android build is just doing location fixes too often of if the problem is really my poor signal problems in most of the places I go. I wonder if my phone is constantly jumping towers, triggering location fixes.
This is where you all can help:
Are you experiencing high battery drain with network location on?
Is Android System at the top of your battery use list?
If you know how to use adb logcat, are you seeing a lot of network location fixes?
My next step is to try logcat with my G1 running CM 6.0.0 and see if it also does frequent location fixes.
TLDR: Turning off network location dramatically increased my battery life. Trying to figure out if the problem is caused by software or by my low cell signal.
I had this exact same issue on the G1. I heard once that it was related to the GPS running frequently even when the phone was idle. Just disable the network location option and you'll continue to be good to go.
Is it definitely not a 3rd party app doing this?
I leave network locations on and my battery lasts.
How funny you bring this up as I jsut did this this morning. However a little differently.
Ive been noticing huge drains. Well, I have the Battery Watcher widget, and have seen the Android System was taking up like 45% of the drainage with things like
VPN Services (huh???)
Google Backup Transport
Setup (again, huh???)
Network Location
Android System
Settings Storrage
HTC Checkin Services
Account and Sync Settings
All I turned off was Background data, and for the last 2hrs, my battery has been @ 100%, and Im running both Tweet Deck and Trillian with 3 - 5 accounts on each

I don't think it's a third party app because I turned everything off on the few apps I have that use location. I will definitely do some more testing by uninstalling apps this evening to see if anything changes. There is one app I can think of that could be doing this, but it was never a problem on my G1 (or maybe I just expected bad battery life on my G1).
Edit: Wow. At 3 hours and 10 minutes off charger now and still 100% battery. I hope I can find a third party source for this problem so I can use network location and get great battery life.

Yeah... I'm not using any location-using apps except what was preinstalled, with the exception of SpeedTest. Battery works just fine and I only see GPS if I'm actually using the app. I could do some logging later I suppose to see if it's being used more than I think, but the battery life definitely isn't suffering.

I think there is a fair amount of debate on just how much network location does impact battery. Maybe it's just a matter of what sort of battery life people expect. I'm trying to figure out if there is any way to reduce the battery drain from network location, particularly by reducing the frequency of location fixes while the phone is asleep.
It looks like network location is very different on my G2 compared to my G1 with CM 6.0.0. While the G2 appears to check the network location every minute, the G1 only seems to do it on demand. On demand makes a lot more sense. Does Google really need to collect where I am every minute of the day?
Does anyone know if leaving gps on will render the same (or better) results, while facilitating it's functions on demand rather than random sampling via network location?
I read somewhere that leaving gps on, doesn't necessarily drain the battrery unless actively being used.
When I leave GPS location on with the phone sleeping I do not see any location activity in logcat. I think GPS location is purely on demand.
After playing around a bit yesterday, I don't think any apps that I installed are causing the constant network location fixes. That's not to say that one of bundles apps isn't misbehaving, of course. What I have noticed is that while the phone seems to do a location fix every minute normally, additional locations requests will occur when apps are actively seeking the location. It looks like all these requests may not actually be location fixes, but instead simply getting the location already stored in the system. Nonetheless, this is causing CPU activity and draining the battery.
I'm not sure where to go next with this, but am open to any suggestions.
Having this issue as well... android system is in the highest partial wake and when I turn off location services via network, it does it less. So does anyone know why location needs to keep going on and on?

When you enable Use Wireless Networks under Location, it prompts you that it will collect background data for Google. That's why it's a battery drain
Curious for anyone on the Sense ROMs - is there a way to get the weather widget to work without enabling Wireless Network Location? I have GPS enabled, and Fancy Widget worked fine with just that, but Sense won't update location w/o Wireless Networks enabled it seems.
FYI, this problem went away for me completely after I did a factory reset a few weeks back. The constant network location activity in the logs went away, and I've been able to leave network location on full time since then with no significant battery drain. The one thing that I may have done differently was that I never ran many of the bundled apps that use location after the reset.
How can I check in logs for which network activity runs?
Use aLogcat from the market or, if you are familiar with adb, use adb logcat from your computer.

I have both options since I have quick system info and adb installed on my PC as well.
but what exactly am I looking for?
I don't recall what the exact entries are, but if you're having the network location problem that I was it is hard to miss. There were log entries that clearly indicated checking the location every minute, even while the phone was in sleep. It's probably easiest to check with logcat because you can let the phone sleep and monitor the log without all of the activity that occurs only when it is awake.

GPS and battery life on the G1
Lots of users/developers assume that if you enable the GPS you will drain your battery more quickly than if you don’t. While this may be true on the iPhone, on the G1 it is actually not true.
Your GPS is simply a radio receiver (k band). On some devices the radio needs to be enabled to get a ‘fix’, but on the G1 the k band radio is ALWAYS on. The G1 uses the radio for several phone features instead of using another band. As a result regardless of whether or not you have your GPS on the radio that receives the sat signals is on - the battery life of your phone won’t be different. This is great news for developers.
There is an open source project that provides a service that location dependant applications can use to ‘pre-fetch’ location data so that it is ALWAYS available regardless of whether or not you can get an immediate GPS fix. It also fixes another problem - the time it takes the GPS to obtain a fix (30-60 seconds). Whenever you use ShopSavvy to scan an item we need to figure out where you are to give you a local price. Even if you can get a GPS fix when you scan a barcode, we might not be able to get the GPS coordinates before we provide the pricing results - as a result you won’t get local results. By prefetching your location regularly we can use the last known result which is likely very close to your current location.
Anyway, turn on the GPS!

As do RC33 and ADP builds. While Big In Japan makes an interesting argument I'd like to see either some good evidence or Google engineers input before leaving it on all the time.
How about the fact that even when it is "on", it is not actually "on" unless you see the icon in the notification bar.

That automatically doesn't tell me it's not actively sync'ing with a satellite and burning juice. Along those same lines do any of the battery monitoring apps on the Market actually work? As in, do they give you reliable battery draw levels over a period of time?

Watts seems to work rather well. It also tells you what is causing the battery to drain as it reads the Android log files.

Well, the K band is 20 - 40 GHz, but GPS (the non-military L1 frequency) is at 1575,42 MHz.
The other parts of the blog post sound similarly 'imaginary' to me.
Battery Drain G1
Guys,I own a T Mobile G1 Android 1.6 Phone and recently I’m facing some problems. The problem that appeared recently is with the battery drain. before some days ago the battery of my G1 lasted up to 4-5 days, without using Wireless, GPS, and Bluetooth. If I used the mentioned services normally the battery lasted up to two days. But recently the battery is draining too fast. Within 4 hours the battery goes down less then 15% even I do not use any mentioned services. I keep my phone on standby, without talking a single minute with the phone, not using any service etc, and again it goes down very quick. I took some measures according to HTC instructions how to save the battery but again it does not function. I uninstalled all applications and reset the phone to factory setting by again same thing. Then I searched on the Google some instructions, I tried also that one’s but again it does not function. I always used HTC charger that came with the phone but again same problem. What is the strangest thing that after some days the battery gets back and works perfectly for two weeks, which means I use the phone normally without charging 4-5 days. As I operate very well with the smartphones, Pocket PC’s etc I start analyzing G1 and monitoring very closely why the battery goes down, I monitored for a long time the query under the :About Phone-Battery use- and I see there that Andorid OS is using the battery from 76% up to 85%. Now it came to my mind that something is keeping engaged or it keeps running the Andorid OS always on. Then I suspected that thre my be any virus on my phone, but I installed form Market Flexilis/lookout antivirus application, but there was no virus and again the battery goes very quickly down. As I said after sometime the system returns to normal and the battery lasts for 4-5 days, and when I check the information under Phone,Battery use, I see that the Andorid OS is spending only 6% of the battery. Comparing with the previous description it is a huge difference. According to my opinion there is a small problem with any file which keeps always running to much the Andorid OS. Can you please give me any instruction why Andorid OS is spending that much the battery? Or give me any instruction how to prevent this operation that keeps Android OS to much engaged? or is there any programming mistake?, is there any need for update?, do I need to root my phone as it is not rooted? The reason why I’m thinking that there is a technical problem is because sometimes the system gets back to normal and sometimes it goes out of normal running. I appreciate a lot if you could help me to resolve the mentioned problem.
I think I finally found the solution to lousy battery performance on Android phones in general!
If you are using Spare Parts -or any other battery monitor app- and noticed a near 100% of awake time then,
it's as simple as that:
Go to menu, choose Settings->Applications->Development
and make sure that Stay Awake (second option) is NOT checked.
If it is checked the phone never sleeps while charging, but unfortunately, due to an android bug I guess, won't return to his regular sleep schedule after disconnecting from the charger.
Please try this and let me know! It worked for me!

Do you have Spare Parts installed?
If yes, then you can see what exactly is using your battery.
My solution applies to those who constantly have near 100% awake time.
I hope you find your culprit soon!
Timescape is the culprit.
Force close it and remove it from your home screen and watch your battery life double.
Well i'm having the 100%, so i will defenitely give it a shot. Thank you.

You speak my words absolutely right Timescape is the Main Battery sucker and nothing else. I removed it Days ago including of closing the Process in Taskmanager. my battery Life got up from 7 Hours to 16 Hours. Nothing else had effect for me even changing the Launcher to Helix or whatever.
Timescape / Mediascape is what sucks the X10 down.
No timescape on my homescreen and stay awake is not checked...still batterylife is lousy
Its fine when its not being used but as soon as i start using apps or use the phone in general, the battery drains fast.....
I reset the phone after unplugging it in the morning after a full charge, and my battery lasts a good 18 hours. Thats with Wifi on 75% of the time and 3g always on.

could you guide me through what settings you use please
cause with wifi on ....i get like half a day!
3 to 4 days with wi-fi off,3g off and gps on......................
don't twit or face though.
After being fed up with barely making it throughout the day, I decided to perform the following experiment:
1) wiped the phone clean (factory reset);
2) did NOT configure my google account with the phone to avoid needless sync with google as well as all those processes running in background no matter data connection available or not;
3) disabled data (as that line I am testing the X10 on has no data plan on it);
4) switched off location services; removed every single widget from the home screens;
5) installed HelixLauncherDONUT and left default widgets + added SE's digital clock;
6) installed startup auditor to prevent stuff like timescape from starting
7) contacts/settings/show status updates changed from all to none
Now after 24 hours and 45 minutes since unplugged phone has 88% battery left!!! There was no usage beside me checking stats every few hours. Phone is set to 3G, so switching to 2G may yield even better results.
Before this test I have done exactly the same test with the only difference of Google account being enabled on the phone (with sync disabled). No matter there was no data connection at all, phone went thru 20% of battery in just 6 hours with same usage pattern - 'no usage, just standby and checking every now and then the status of battery'. Not bad as with normal use of the phone I was been able to make it thru the day without shutting down due to battery empty.
Bottomline, I blame Google services for the excessive battery drainage in this phone. It is 1.6 'Donut' with its outdated google services 'at fault' IMO.
Hopefully with the planned Eclair update (lets hope Froyo too!) this situation will be addressed, at least to a certain degree.
Cheers!

Don't get me wrong. The experiment I've done is a "proof of concept" sort of - I am trying to figure out what is wrong with the battery usage in this phone.
If we look from your point of view, just to have the phone on standby and not using it, not Motorola V3, but a toy phone from the dollar store would suffice.

oh, i know. i just upset with SE, we're here to find some solutions
it's so sad that we buy the phone for the look & the features, too bad that SE did a very bad job. now we have to wait for months to get an update from them, & still don't know it'll fix all the issues???
What I've found out is that most battery drain comes from apps. Install an app that monitors cpu time per app and cpu speed and load. Shortly after I got the phone I was about ready to throw it from a bridge or something because of the horrible battery performance. However, one day I noticed that the cpu was running at ~1GHz most of the time even though it's supposed to throttle down and match speed to need. I found out that one app had ALOT more cpu time that all other apps/services (a widget from DMI, the Danish weather service, in case you care). Once uninstalled, my phone could go through half a day with both 3G and Wifi enable and not even drop below 90% battery capacity - although only mild usage because I was working. Before, the battery went from 100% to like 60% during a night with 6-7hrs of sleep.
Finding out how to improve battery usage has definitely made me like the phone alot more, but I still wish HTC had made the software for it.
Regards - Martin
I get a good full day with my x10. I use Timescape but set the update option to NEVER so it only updates by tapping on timescape tile; i also turn of wi-fi when not in range of my home wi-fi, bt off, gps off (unless needed for maps).
I also trained the battery. Let power off by itself and charging full 4 or 5 times.
as for the google thing id suggest going into settings then data synchronization.. click google and uncheck background data.. it even tells you it will save battery and lower data usage.. whenever you use market though it will ask you to enable it in order to use it.
hope it helps!!

To follow up on my test - 7 days, 18 hours with 3% battery left. Here is a quick video I made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lt2YjrREgxg
for me i use Launcher Donut
and disable data and mms
settings > wireless controls > Mobile network settings > MMS & DATA
try it and tell me how much u will reach in the same daily using average
Removing Timescape & Mediascape totally from the home screens.
and disabling Data Sync>Gmail
battery life is showing huge improvement.
I know this issue has been posted in forums for other devices, but I haven't seen anything about it for NC. I did try to search the NC forums but couldn't find anything that seemed to address this problem.
I am using MIUI 1.7.22. I have noticed significant battery drain due to Android OS (in battery stats), suspend (in the systempanel app), and event/o (also in systempanel). I have disabled auto-sync and any apps that appear to be likely culprits (those that might attempt to download data). This problem seems to appear with wifi on or off, and when on, I have tried both setting it to never turn off and to turn off when the screen is off. Initially I was experiencing battery drain due to cell standby, which I took care of by disabling the telephony provider, phone, and mms apks. I know many don't believe this has an effect, but I did it anyway. The cell standby drain is gone, but now I'm fighting the drain due to these other factors. Has anyone found a fix for this?
After scouting around for info, I have tried some suggestions seen elsewhere: rebooting and wiping dalvik cache. So far today I haven't had any Android OS, etc. issues. Standby life with screen off is as it should be (for now and hopefully forever)--very slow battery drain.
This is with wifi set to never shut off, which I prefer.
Suspend etc. came back last night although not as extreme as before. Hopefully some other folks will have things to add to this thread. I will continue posting progress info as I learn more about this.
From the code.google.com forums:
Confirm heavy battery drain with enabled Location & Security -> Use wireless networks / Use GPS satellites. I've disable both options and now my battery life is normal.
With enabled "Location & Security" options battery eaten by "Android OS" process (about 40-55%).
I will try this and report back.
Disabling WIFI and GPS in location/security had no effect. There appears to be a google process that prevents the system from sleeping.
I was still experiencing random battery drain due to Android OS, suspend, event/0 after switching to cm7. One suggestion I read was to disable calendar sync, as this appears to be a runaway process that attempts to connect to the server constantly without allowing the device to sleep. Doing this allowed me to get through the night with very little drain and the Android OS, etc. processes were finally behaving (within normal limits).
I'm not sure if anyone is reading this thread but I will continue to update until I figure out the solution, as I imagine this problem will become more noticeable to others who are equally frustrated with this issue.

Right now I'm using cm7 (2.3.5) but I was using MIUI before. Turning off calendar sync has worked well so far.
I had bad battery drain in the past and no deep sleep. but what worked for me was not to use any live wall paper. this fixed my deep sleep issues. for the battery drain, re-set your battery stats and re boot a couple of times for the stats to settle down. also check google map and latitude. in latitude just log out. un-checking sync in my yahoo email app also helped with my battery drain. my wifi is set at, off with screen. I went from 20 -30% drain in 7hrs to now 1-3% in 7hrs
I hope any of this info can help
cm7 n146
Thank you, boxcar. I had tried all of those things (froze live wallpaper, reset battery stats, reboot, froze maps and latitude) but the only thing that worked for me was unchecking the box for calendar sync. Email sync and wifi appear to be non-issues--no difference between off or on. Evidently this google calendar sync bug is a known issue (that very few people seem to know about!). I hope google will fix this soon.
I also have same problem on my Galaxy S2. These two(events/0, suspend) drain many battery, 14% one night, without WIFI, GPS, Bluetooth.
I'll keep on tracing this issue, and share the result in this thread.

Turning off autosync seems to help the most (although setting WIFI to turn off when the screen turns off appears to help, as well). I tried using an autosync toggle but just turning it on at all seemed to result in a gradual creeping up of the Android OS, etc. problems. Manual sync of calendar and perhaps gmail and contacts seems to be the way to go. For some reason, exchange mail set to push results in no problems. The other trick I've found is to go to applications, then calendar and calendar storage, and force stop, delete cache, and THEN manual sync of calendar (reboot, recovery, wipe dalvik, fix permissions are good ideas, too). When I flash nightlies, I go through this process and the offending processes work as they should. If I don't, problems appear sooner or later.
I've had my nook on for 9 hours now, WIFI on (off with screen off) and 30 minutes of display on time. I've lost 9%, so I think I'm on the right track. This is how it should work, I.think. Of course, the results SHOULD be the same with autosync on, but manual sync for good battery life is an acceptable small tradeoff in my opinion.

Menu, settings, accounts and sync (I leave background data checked).
I found part of the root cause, maybe some old application - can work on new version, but drain many battery. Today I uninstalled the 'Android photo widget', then only 1% battery has been drained within 2 hours when standby. Not totally solved the issue, but seems OK.
I guess you can also try this, find another 'bad' application which drains your battery.
Well guys, I'm not sure if I'm the last Nook Color user to continue fighting with this super annoying headache (I know SGS2 users are, too), but I think I'm on to something. I thought calendar sync was the culprit (and perhaps it was), but the Android OS drain (featuring nemeses suspend and event/0) would not go away and the arrival of this problem continued to be (apparently) random. I had an idea that, if the calendar sync kept alternating between suspend and event/0, perhaps this was due to old events that caused the sync process to continue longer than it would normally. So, based on this idea and logic, I changed my exchange e-mail account settings to sync email from the last month rather than to sync all mail. Looking at my work e-mail history, I realized I had e-mails in various folders and sent mail from as far back as 2001! Although it's nice to be able to access all e-mail history, perhaps the polling services were constantly monitoring the activity of super old emails and folders, which caused the suspend and event/0 processes to flip out. I don't know if this is the way Android actually works but it seemed logical to me. Well, for the last 24 hours, I have intermittently checked my cpu activity through systempanel, and what do you know, when the device is not being used, suspend and event/0 work as they are supposed to and Android OS stays low in the battery % list. PLEASE let this be the fix! I know there are other factors that contribute to the acting out of these processes, but on a stripped down device with no autosync or widgets and no out of control services identified in systempanel or watchdog, there can't be many other explanations. I'm curious if others with this problem have similar settings on their email accounts. In all the forums on different sites (and I've read a ton of them), I've never seen anything like this mentioned.

Please vote there, and, may be, Google will fix it.
For those still following this thread, here's a tip. Use Gemini app manager (in the market). This has been one of the best tools I've found for managing wakelock issues and battery drain during standby. It allows you to identify apps that start up on their own (more than you think) and prevent them from starting randomly. In my experience this has been a huge cause of the standby drain problem showing up as Android OS, suspend, and event/0 in battery monitors. I'm currently sitting on 81% battery remaining with over 1 hour of screen time after 21 hours since my last charge. I know it's not a lot of usage but it's the standby time that's fantastic.

I've a Galaxy S2. Tried everything, except disable autosync. Was losing 30-40% battery at night. So far since turning off google sync I'm getting about <1% battery use an hour. Will see if it continues. Thanks.
Im currently on XXJVS with Semaphore 1.7 kernel, but i have experienced the same behaviour the last weeks (or maybe i just started noticing recently): traveling starts a battery drain
Update: see post #22
Some background:
I suffered from the Android Process battery drain up to XXJVR. Flashing XXJVS seems to have improved things (after numerous reflashes of XXJVR and XXJVQ which didnt help. My phone's cpu keeps between 1% and 3% when sleeping, but i have noticed that Cpu rockets to like 30% as soon as i leave my house to go to work, or leave work to go home. Its as if the phone keeps trying to connect to some network all the time, but only while in motion (and trying to lock in from tower to tower?). The problem is however that Systempanel nor the log give great clues where to look.
Examples:
In this first example, my phone is hooked to the charger during the night, and the alarm clock is running (hence the steady 10% cpu load). As soon as the phone is disconnected, cpu drops to low levels. On the exact minute i leave home, cpu rockets. And yes,i arrived at work around 07:50.
Home environment:
- connected to wifi
- good 3G coverage
- 3G, Bluetooth,GPS enabled
- no Bluetooth profiles present
Work environment
- wifi network present but not connected
- average 3G coverage
In this second example, i'm at work, hardly using the phone. Without touching the phone, stepping into my car and driving off, the cpu kicks in again. Notice there is no Device Usage whatsoever at the moment the CPU climbs. Bluetooth profiles active at this point and paired & connected to the carkit.
This last screenshot shows the typical clues (or lack thereof) that SystemPanel shows: just the System process using the most CPU.
Also the logcat doesn't provide much clues (or too many maybe) either. I have found that some applications couldn't contact GoogleAnalystics because i have AdFree installed, so i uninstalled those apps.
Frankly, i don't know where took look further. The damn android 'System'process just doesn't give enough clues. I have formatted internal & external SD, deleted cache & Dalvik cache, flashed & factory resetted to no avail. I'll try to have a log running tomorrow morning just before leaving the house to see if i can find what log entry corresponds to the system process kicking in. In the meantime, has anyone ever seen this behaviour, or any hints where to look?
adb bugreport > c:/report.txt
look there maybe
Install System Tuner pro it has option to record processes(+analyzer ) better than System Panel.
..try freze Maps or turn off network localization -Uncle Google likes to locate phone very often .

in short words - bull****
i have not touched (freezed/deleted) any app
yet still i have not noticed a drain, any kind of drain
let him determine what app is causing the 100% cpu usage first
prior to advising him to freeze or delete anything - that is wise you have to agree
also localization service would not provide such high cu usage
think please
Hi,
It might be facebook 1.7.1. There are several complaining comments that "upload manager" process is running in the background and prevents phone from going into deep sleep mode.
i got data connection active all the time with all apps syncing (gmail, twitter, facebook)
and phone got no problem sleepin =)

i think you should go out and do some thing better with your life then watching what a battery uses
i think its a waste of space to quote WHALE post
and well if he got battery drained overnight it is important to determine why
it should not happend
Just a quick question, where is the phone when you are in the car? I have noticed that if I keep my phone in my trouser pocket while driving, I loose signal frequently, shown on Bluetooth unit, and over a 3hour journey I can loose 30% battery, but if I put the phone in my shirt pocket I do not loose signal and my battery loss is about 20%.
My theory is that the phone signal finds it easier to penetrate the glass windows of the car rather that the metalwork.
Similarly to Geryatrix, when I leave my phone beside my bed (=~~, best place for alarm), my battery drains because the phone stays with a very low network signal and keeps searching for better antennas, I guess. But then at "Battery Usage" I could see that "Cell Standby" was eating my bat, not the "Android System".
battery drains from wifi staying connected in idle state - thats a bug in my opinion from samsung - it should not use such ammount of energy
data connection in idle is almost unnoticable in battery use
When I had facebook 1.7.1 installed, "Android System" was consuming 20% battery.
After I uninstalled facebook 1.7.1 and the problem is gone, "Android System is back
to normal, about 4%.

seems like one of apps you use is trying to connect somewhere
have you made bugreport - i think you will find the culprit there
Have you tried disabling fast dormancy? Maybe these wakelocks are caused by incompatible 3g cell.

system works perfect with none of stock apps touched
using memory killers and altering system with such freeze options

Hi,
I have opposite experience. Keeping Wifi enabled causes almost no battery drain for me, keeping 3G enabled does big time. My Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wifi version is set to never let the wifi connection sleep, and still battery drains no more than 1% or 2% a day is the tablet is not used.
I tested today with Wifi disabled. Still the Enter Dormancy messages appear each 5 seconds, altough the CPU hit is less. The Fast Dormacy messages seem purely cell-tower related, and wifi-unrelated. The Dormancy messages start as soon as i start moving, and stop when i'm home. I will update the startpost agan tonight.

I entered this Sysdump menu, the button read ""Enable Fast Dormancy" so i guess that means it was disabled all along. I enabled fast dormancy and will continue to test.
Hi,
Below you will find some tricks i use to increase standby time and force less resource consumption leading to a better battery life. I have tested all these things a number of times and my device's battery performance is upto the mark when i follow them.
1. Disable Moto tips n tricks in Settings > Motorola privacy > Uncheck Help motorola and Moto care
Everyone by now knows how to use moto apps and their added benifits so there is no need to enable those options. They use data in the background. By turning these off you not only save data but also prevent wake lock leading to better standby.
2. Use active display cleverly
I dont use the option to turn off notifications at night. But all the notifications recieved during my sleep are shown by the active display leading to battery drain even though the device itself is asleep. So, the trick here is to place the phone on its back or put the phone underneath a cushion tricking the proximity sensor into thinking its in a pocket so that active display doesnt show any notifications.
3. Disable motorola security in Settings > Security > Device admin > Motorola device privacy
By default google's android device manager is on which helps to locate device in case of theft. So there is no need to get the same benifit of android device manager by motorola. All it does is use data under google services. Again less data consumption and better standby time.
4. Google location reporting
I dont use google now. And everyone who doesnt should disable google location reporting in Setting > Location > location reporting. If you use google now then it is not a better idea to disable location reporting because it helps to provide info about places nearby but if you dont use google now unchecking location reporting helps to save data and unnecessary wake locks.
5. Retrain Ok google now
If your moto x wakes up to voices not even close to the phrase ok google now in a crowd or a noisy environment then you need to retrain the device. Speak the phrase loud and clear. This helps me to avoid unnecessary wake ups.
6. Check you ram usage under Settings > Apps > Swipe left
This is suggested everywhere but the actual thing to note is the service section. Simple apps like Aviary (photo editor) keep a service running in the background. Remove all such apps. It helps to avoid unnecessary ram use and keep the device smooth after days of use without restart.
7. Battery percentage in status bar for better Screen on time
I use Du battery saver to indicate the battery percentage on the status bar. Weirdly my device would charge slowly but provide way better screen on time. However it behaves normally if i turn of the battery indicator. I have no idea why this happens but i have tested it and this trick works on my device.
8. Turn of scanning when wifi is off
Goto Settings > wifi > in options de select avoid poor signals and scanning always available.
9. Charging with a full signal
Whenever you are charging the device be sure to charge it in a place with full signal. I have noted that when i charge the phone in a room with three signal bars or low it charges slowly as compared to full signal. Although this maybe because of different power sockets but i have tested this on two sockets located at a place where i get one maybe two signal bars and two another sockets where i get full signal. It works for me.
I will update this thread if anything else comes in my mind.
I already do all these (and a lot more actually) and i just barely make it through a day if i don't really use my Moto X (X1056). Love the phone and all but it's battery is not up to snuff at all. Just got tired of spending time babying the battery and now just use my phone. Have a Targus 6000 mAh external battery thingy i keep in my tote bag that comes in handy every now and then.
In my opinion and experience, the 2013 Moto X and great battery life are not synonymous at all. I just deal with it.
I am going to disagree with you. I think the battery performance is way above average. I have attached some screenshots. Check them.
I'll give some of these a try, the problem I usually have is my phone thinks that it is much more dead than it really is. I think this instance it was on 1% for like 8-10 hours.
I do know about the 1 percent bug but i think it to be a hardware problem rather than software. I have a similar problem with my car. The nossle that pours gas in the tank cuts off automatically even when the tank till has the capacity to get 10 litres of petrol in it. The car company told me that the sensor is placed incorrectly in my tank leading the nossle to cut off way before the limit. Similarly the battery circuit may be wired incorrectly but this is just a theory.
Adding to my list of suggestions-
1. Switch to 2g when using wifi
If you use 3g/4g in an area where signal strength is not that high the phone would constantly force its modem to not only maintain a steady signal but also to get maximum signal which causes battery drain. So if you got wifi installed in your home or office, switch to 2g and save battery. Goto Settings > More..> Mobile network > Preferred network type and toggle accordingly.
2. Google + auto back up
Photos app that is a part of google + app automatically backs up all your images on the cloud. Many people are unaware about it and the back up happens in background. This uses a lot data. To cancel this open photos app and in options goto settings and sign out of your account. Some people may use this feature but i dont because it backs up every image stored on the device - whatsapp images, screenshots, viber the list goes on.
3. Google sync
Goto settings and scroll down to your google account. Uncheck all the options which your device doesnt require syncing. Since i dont use google play books tv i keep them unchecked.

Are you running stock? I'm thinking about putting in a warranty claim on my device. I'm currently at 61% battery. 5.5 hours on battery and about an hour screen on time. did use maps for about 5 minutes, but even then, not close to what many other users are getting. I've factory reset multiple times. Don't want to unlock bootloader as it's still under warranty.
Going to call Moto today.

Yes i am running stock. Never rooted never felt the need to. Although i like to tinker devices but within the limit. Before calling in for warranty try disabling google now for a day. I am sure it wont hurt. Also check the times your device got awake in the battery section. The key here is to extend standby time. No one can magically increase on screen time of a device beyond the battery capability but what can be controlled is the standby time. If you arenot using the phone it should be figuratively dead. And seeing the information you provided i can judge your device remains awake. My average run with the battery is about 22 hrs including 4 hr screen on time.

Ill turn off Google now and see what happens. Here is a screen shot. I was an avid android user the last four years, but have been using and iPhone for the last 8 months (for work). Recently switched back to Android and thought the battery on this device would be great but haven't been happy.
Attaching a couple screen shots. Have less than a couple weeks to submit warranty so don't have a lot of time. I'll give it a day with Now off and see what happens.

After watching the screenshot i suggest you switch to 3g. Your device is getting poor 4g coverage which is the only reason for heavy battery drain.

Thanks - tried that. My only options are Automatic and 2G only. No option between 3G and 4G. I usually have better signal, but I'm in my basement working from home today. When that's the case should I switch to 2G? Signal is the same. I guess I could turn off mobile data when I'm home and on Wifi. However, if I'm on wifi, do I need to worry about that or does being on Wifi turn off mobile data? It's been awhile for me.
I really just want to make it through the day on a charge. I normally only have a couple hours screen on time, but even now, I'm lucky to get ten hours. took your advice and turned off Google Now. I'll see how the second half of the battery goes.

When i switch to 2g i never lose a signal bar. Never. So if you see yourself in a situation like today where signal is low i strongly suggest you to use 2g. Since you are connected to wifi your modem doesnt need to pull data. I get that people want atleast a day's battery life out of their phone but this hassle of 3g 4g is really what bogs down battery life. Another thing to lookout for is location reporting. Since you have turned off google now turn off location reporting as well.

Thanks for all your help. I went ahead turned mobile data off since I'm home. I'll keep an eye on signal and try to use Wifi when I can. I do have location reporting off (I only use it when I need GPS, which isn't too often).
When I switch to 2G, my signal remains the same. Does that sound right? Or is 2g just going to use less power, regardless of signal?

Thanks again for all your help! Closer to 11 hours in and around 45%. Only lost about 15% in last 4ish hours versus 35% in first 5. Turned off Google Now and switched to 2g when on WiFi. Location is also off. Guessing guys that get 4+ hours SOT are doing the same. Bit of a pain to have to toggle between 2g and 4g. I'm guessing I can download a widget to make it easier.

Whether you agree with me or disagree with me is irrelevant. At the end of the day, it is MY experience, and what I experience using MY Moto X. Is it improbable that we both have dissimilar experiences and usage scenarios?
those are some nice suggestions, but some of your paths were not found (e.g. Motorola Privacy).
regardless,
a.) there is already a battery life thread
b.) battery life is going to be what you make of it, and there are numerous variables - even within the same country or carrier
but if you are going to report your battery life experience, be sure to give full detail so that folks can make an apples-to-apples comparison. For example, below are mine for a typical weekday:
carrier: VZW (maryland)
off charger time: 16 hours (6am - 10pm)
wifi: on all the time (about 6 hours connected to wifi)
mobile data: set to Global and on all the time (about 10 hours connected to mobile data - no wifi connection)
bluetooth: on all the time (and connected to Moto 360 watch, with 1 hour total connected to my car)
location services: on all the time
touchless control: on
active display: on
google now hotword detection: on
GPS: battery saving mode
root: yes
unlocked bootloader: yes (although this REALLY shouldn't make a difference, but I have noticed worse battery life after unlocking - could be due to after a reboot, the system does not revert back???)
system partition: DALVIK
ROM: Krypton 4.4.4 or stock 4.4.4
total screen on time: ~2 hours
battery saving apps: greenify
other apps: Xposed with gravity box
prior to the 4.4.4 update, I would get 3 hours easily, now I barely hit 2. my reason for leaving everything on is that I like to have my day/life as seamless as possible. i don't want to have to worry about turning on/off wifi/bluetooth or any other features. a smartphone should be usable for at least 24 hours with at least 2 hours of SOT without having to tinker with it all day.
hope this helps.
