Droid X info. overload - Droid X General

I started my android research 3 months ago. I've read nearly everything I could on a handful of websites like xda (and droid-life.com, droidxforums, androidforums, lifehacker, droidforums.net, howtogeek, androidpolice, mydroidworld and others) enough to be an expert lurker and terrified of being flamed.
After a little more than a week with my DX, I've rooted and survived the Froyo 2.2 OTA (forget the boogeyman--my new fear is the word "bricked"). For the last 5 days I've been too afraid to modify my phone at all after reading hundreds of horror stories (back to lurking again).
So, fear aside, I 'm looking for a simplified (what is it with the over-abundance of icons?) format that makes the phone more usable for me. I've been experimenting with Astro file manager and using Titanium backup to freeze apps but it's just not working for me.
So, with the plethora of posts out there from the last few days of what might or might not work, brick, or help...any recommendations on how I should proceed?
TIA

The RubiX rom is nearly blur-free and most of the bloat removed.

If you're gun shy, you can always just install Launcher Pro and hide them by selecting from the home screen, Menu -> Preferences -> General -> Hidden Apps

In the settings you can change the "font style." (New fonts can be downloaded for a buck.) It can have a significant effect on how things appear. Some suggestions from the tips thread are Helvetica Nue, Soho Gothic, Frutiger and Felbridge. I'm digging Helvetica a lot.
Thanx for suggestion.. I forgot to mention I downloaded a few flip fonts I love how it changes the look of the phone.. Any other suggestions? Or performance boosters?

you can not change the boot logo (or shutdown) if you are not rooted. If you are rooted, you still get OTA, but once installed it will unroot the phone
No problem do this
Fancy Widgets
Pure Messenger/ Grid Calendar and an Agenda app... (can't remember the name)
I am running Agenda Widget and liking it ok so far. I am always looking for a better one.
Launcher Pro or ADW, Beautiful Widgets, change the font style.
Here is a link to a thread with a plethora of Flip Fonts to choose from. Just download the .apk. locate and install on your device. Go into settings and change the font, restart and there you go

Don't mean to pick on the op but I'm curious why people don't want to root.
I did the day it was possible and haven't looked back. So many things you can do to customize all reversible if you have to. Just don't try doing really crazy stuff unless you know what your doing but most things in the stick under the root section are easy and awesome.
Anyway I'd love to understand why people don't just do it.
Battery usage with percentage would be really nice.

I don't get why people who don't root their phones go on XDA. XDA is a place for rooting and ROM development. Not a user-friendly website for non-rooters. But yeah definitely root, you can customize a lot more. Customize the notifications bar, I don't really big the light gray and blue 3G icon
I've gone from a few different Nokias, to a Motorola Razor, to a Blackberry Pearl and now finally to a Samsung Vibrant. I'm pretty good with computers and software so I know I could get rooting/recovery/flashing down, but this is my first time with a mobile device I could hack.
Whenever I do research on the topic I find multiple threads with multiple ways to root. The whole directions/concept just isn't crystal clear with me yet, despite how much I've read. And, there's always posts at the end of each thread by users with unanswered issues/problems.
I guess, I'm just taking the slow cautious route, enjoying stock android eclair for a while. I do have the itch, but no apps or issues with my phone have pushed me beyond curiosity and into the experimental, so to speak.
What is the top main reason you have for rooting your vibrant?
Edit: to point out, I know I could've "hacked" my previous phones, but not the way you can with an Android phone, you know what I mean...

- Allows access to applications that require root access (e.g. Titanium Backup, SetCPU, AdFree (not suggested since it helps developers), metamorph, etc)
- When you root, you have the ability to flash a custom recovery that allows custom ROMs. This allows nandroid backups, restores, and more.
- Remove bloatware that comes with the phone (this one DEFINITELY)
- Screenshots
See, I get confused. All I've read about recovery was people talking about "booting into recovery. The only thing I thought you flashed were the custom ROMs. And, I thought you only needed the backups and restores so you could get back to an unrooted state in case you needed warrantee work, or messed up your phone somehow.
What are the major bloatware items on the stock t-mobile vibrant?

... oh yeah and with root (and installed clockwork recovery) you can apply the Captivate camera which its interface is easier to apply different scenes.
And no.. you can restore non-root with Odin and nandroid backup (JAC's thread has a unrooted backup online). But yeah you do backups before you apply hacks to your phone incase anything happens

Trying to figure out how to remove bloatware was THE reason I found xda and rooted. I had no idea what I was doing but it is ULTRA easy. Download update zip-boot to recovery-apply-enjoy. That got me discovering all the other awesome things I can do.
You will always see people who have problems with anything in the threads. This is why you make backups. Once you have those you can do a lot more with a lot more confidence knowing that if you make a mistake you can correct it - mostly. And you can unroot if you have to.

Come on guys lets talk about stuff you can do for non rooters please. I did root my phone but I took it to far and bricked it. I'm not doing it again and I know that xda forums lean more to rooting then not. I thought a thread that talked about non rooted phones was a great idea but its been taken over. So I'm bringing it back.
There are a lot of good lockscreen apps to look at for changing your lockscreen. I've used some of them just haven settled on one yet. So no need to root just have fun with it the way it is.

[DISCUSS] Blur-less ROM Comparisons? [With List/Links]

In the last couple of weeks, we've seen a lot of advancements in ROM releases for the X. I don't want to start some kind of flame-war here, but just wondering who has run all, or multiple variations of the available Blur-less ROMS and their opinion of each.
I know of these ROMS:

Anyone care to weigh in on their experiences?
I decided to go an make this a list of Blur-less ROMS with links. While most of these have homes other than XDA, I tried to put both the XDA thread link and the "home" link.
Since we are discussing here... I always wanted to know what was the reason you could not remove BLUR??
I mean.. I know the phone wouldn't boot if you removed it WITHOUT a acceptable replacement.
Like I know I removed HTC Sense UI back in the before time and my phone boot looped because I didn't have a another Launcher to replace it with... could this be the same thing?? Could we remove BLUR apps as long as we have a acceptable replacement??
EX. Remove Blur Dialer and replace with Dialer One...or remove Blur Home and replace with LauncherPro....

I have blur home removed and replaced with launcher pro. Do at your own risk though. I know nothing of any other changes that are ok as of yet. I haven't gotten that far.

I'm personally on RubixFocused 0.5 and think it's just great. But I would like to know if some of the others would be worth trying, or if they are all more or less the same.
I know of these ROMS:
1 - Tranquility (Are all of the current ROMS based off of this one?)
2 - Rubix
3 - zapX (Tempted to try this one just because of the name )
4 - Apex

Nice question.
To me the Theme/Rom's do seem very similar. They for the most part delete or freeze a lot of the "blur" packages.
The statement by most chefs is "It's faster". OK how much faster then a 2.2 OTA,rooted, 928Droid themed phone???
Is the boot time "way" faster .Do apps activate in split seconds???
EDIT: Flash Fixed
I hesitate to try the Theme/Roms because most seem to have glitches like "Flash not fully functioning so that I can view weather and radar maps ,as an example.
Zapx does peak my interest though....
I've said it in 2 other forums. The zapX rom is awesome. Its the fastest I've used and I have had just about all of them. To me its about how fast everything reacts. From opening the app drawer, tilting the phone, to activating the camera, which you all know typically takes 4 or 5 seconds. With zapX all of it is almost instantaneous. That's my 2 cents for what its worth.
And by the way. I've had no problems with flash on zapX, only issue was with weatherbug and it was fixed by the creator within a day...

I prefer ApeX. Nearly 100% AOSP. It's the closest thing yet..
I just went from zapX to Apex, to me Apex is snappier, and boots up faster.
they are all pretty much the same but zapX seems to be a little slower than the rest for some reason.
You know you can optimize your apks with xUltimate and essentially your stock ota will be just as snappy.
Add a lil MinFree love... and BOOM!!

Yeah, if you pay nearly five bucks for it and I'm poor, spent all my money on the DX, lol. The free version will run the batch restore but you have to click "Install" and the "Done" for each and every app...it would be easier to write down all my apps and settings on a piece of paper than F with that, lol.

I second that. Learn everything you can before rooting. Unlike your dumbphones you can permanently break your smartphone if you're not careful with root access. Rooting is like jailbreaking an iphone, it voids your warranty and good luck getting support from big red afterwards.
If you just want to change the look of the interface, try a new launcher from the market. Launcherpro and adw are great places to start.
I agree with the idea of not rooting without proper knowledge, however if u want to save a little time u can use z4 root in the market

ya. i already rooted the phone. i think. i followed this guide here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...ent/79811-newbie-guide-rooting-fascinate.html
everything seemed to go fine. but i dont know how to check if the root was successful.
i also got clockworkmod rom manager but i am having trouble getting it to work like it says here:http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...nandroid-backup-and-clockworkmod-rom-manager/
i get stuck at the backup faze. im going to have to make a new thread about it.
Unfortunately you can't just install ROM Manager and have CWM magically be there. You have to flash CWM thru Odin, which you can find all the instructions in the development forum

Newbie Question

I have rooted my phone and now I want to start playing with the ROMs.
My question is, what rom manager is the best. Is "rom manger" good?
If so, I notice it will give you a list of all the rom's and let you know of all the updates.
I have a Droid X with the lastest update from Verizon.
Please let me know

Yes rom manager is probably best but if you want to have the latest and greatest download the "team black hat" app in the market for $2 and thry usually throw out the lateat releases for donators.
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
Don't listen to that load of crap. Team Black Hat (also known as P3Droid) releases buggy apps, and half-ROMs, along with FAKED .SBF's, created by himself, NOT Motorola. It's a shame people still support him after TWO instances on the Droid X alone, where using his "ROMs" and "Updates" would leave your phone useless, and unable to .SBF back to stock.
Oh, and it's a paid app. Only Android community app I've ever paid for is ROM Manager back for my Droid1, because it's worth it, and koush is LIGHTYEARS ahead of Team MoneyBags.
Yes, download ROM Manager.

Ok, no need to be harsh about things... P3 and those guys have contributed a TON to the android community, including the SBF files you are bashing against. I was just giving out the info that was requested. I personally don't use the team black hat app, but the question was about ROM managers in general.
Please don't come into the forums and rant and rave about a potentially bad experience you had and add bias to a simple question.
Thank you for the information.
If i want to try different ROMs, is there a way to save apps or app files. For example, Angry Birds saved games?

How make make my phone better.

Anyone have any tips that I could use to make my Android/Atrix experience better.
Any tips?
*Sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Oh sorry, didn't see it. Don't need to swear at me.
Here is my tip from my shallow experience with the phone and android.
1. do factory reset after your phone has been fully charged to 100% for 4hours-ish while its turned off
2. get before update root
3. update to 1.57
4. do the post update root
5. get titanium backup pro and go to the freeze the applications under the safelist.
6. get an launcher (I bought launcherpro plus, but i think just launcherpro is just as good... because the only major perks i've noticed was the launcherpro widgets and widget resizing)
7. freeze the motoblur home(after installing another launcher like lpp)
8. download screengrabber app (it works on rooted phone and I like using it, you may not need a screen capture program)
9. do the webtop mod if you want to try it. you need android sdk first to do adb commands. (I tried it to see how lapdock would feel like and I found it pretty good)
I love launcher pro, as it looks so nice!!! 3d app drawer and home screen flipping animations, and overall so many settings you can customize. (# of app row, column etc)

No need to be so hostile... There has been alot of hate on the forum lately. I know it gets annoying when the new users start asking questions that can be found by searching. But, you have two sensible choices: 1. give them some tips so they know what to search for, or 2. don't reply to thread and let the thread die off...

and if you're feeling real brave??.... You could root the **** out of it and flash gingerblur or gladiatrix or the newest rom greyblur!! Im about to flash greyblur right now!
If you want a gingerbead look to your phone, as well as getting rid of the hideous white notification bar, you should try out GingerBlur, a pseudo-rom for the Atrix.
GrayBlur has also been released, which I'll be trying out shortly.
Get a launcher. If you have the money (15$) I would buy SPB Shell. That is one amazing launcher. Or just get one of the many others like ADW, Launcher Pro, Go Launcher, etc.
If you want to tether (data plan required), go to the dev section to get the tethering APN for mobile hotspot.
Install Tenfar's custom bootstrap recovery. Allows you to flash ROMs.
Install the Amazon App market. A free paid app a day (games too).
And last but not least: check out the themes section. Lots of cool themes and boot images.

You'll have to side load it. you can enable that by running glad root.
Then, download the apk from amazon, put it on your phone, and install

Yeah as long as you reinstall amazon appstore all the time with it and I was reading that the appstore is kind of a form of spyware and require too much info from the user.
Uninstall appstore and you'll see. I had angry birds rio and a few others for free. I uninstalled the appstore and then my apps just stopped working! I heard this would happen but didnt believe it! But it is 100% true! Which like I said sucks!
How do I disable MotoBlur using TiBu?
Never live in the past but always learn from it.
Get GO Launcher EX. It's so much smoother than stock, you'll love it. I just returned to it after using LauncherPro Plus for a few weeks. Features on LauncherPro are great, but it had some stability issues for me, and GO Launcher is MUCH smoother and consistent for me. There are a lot of themes for it as well.
