how do I get to the system/app directory? I mounted the sdcard but can't see it, I'm guessing there is a trick? do I need to adb push to it or something?
You need root to access /system/apps dir.If you already have root:
To do it from phone:
1)Make sure "Usb Debuging" is enabled in phone settings.
2)Download EStrongs File manager(free) or latest Root Explorer(not free, you will need latest version for it to work on Epic).
3)In Estrongs go to settings, select "root options",it will ask you for su privileges, select "yes" and select "Cyanogen",then select "mount RW" and you are good to gr install Root Explorer(easier to setup) and you're good to go.
Or to do it from pc download Android Commander.

okay. you need a total of three file. in the folder.
Do this,
1) use the Astro manager and go to /mnt/sdcard and create a folder. And name that folder "root" (all lower case). Or you can create a folder via a mounting the SDcard and using a computer.
2) Then download This File.
3) Once you download that extract the file. In that file are three scripts.
4) Move those three scripts to the folder that folder you created in step one.
5) then try your command again.
The reason it's not finding /sdcard/root is because it's simply not there. It cannot find what doesn't exist.
Also make sure its CD / not cd/
Hi everyone ! I updated my Zte Blade to CM 7.1 and I realised that this ROM don't has the "Task Manager" application . I extracted the .apk from a stock ROM of Blade, but I cannot install it.
So, how can I install "Task Manager" on my phone ?
Thanks!

You can push it to your phone with adb.
Code:
adb remount
adb push your.apk /system/app/
adb shell chmod 0644 /system/app/your.apk
adb remount
Sometimes when running 'adb remount' for the secont time (to remount /system back as read-only) it fails for me but doesn't give any error message. So if you want to make sure your /system gets mounted back as a read-only, you can run
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /system
This tutorial didn't work for me.I get no message on line "adb shell chmod 0644 /system/app/your.apk", but the rest seems work ok.
It's not supposed to output anything.Did the app work ok?
Sent from my Blade using XDA App
I didn't succeed to install the application. This tutorial don't work for me.

Was the file copied to your device? It could be the app's not compatible with gingerbread? Anyway, there are lots of task managers in the market, you could try a few and pick you new favourite. You could also try 'adb install your.apk' and see if that works. Other than that, I'm out of ideas.
The file was copied in my device, but nothing happend on reboot.I'm sure that TaskManager works on Gingerbread.I'll try to find another Task Manager.Thank you!
I managed to install it. So i think the problem was because i tried with a TasManager.apk extracted from a 2.1 stock version. Today, i tried with a 2.2 version extracted from 2.2 Swedish Spring (TaskManager.apk).
You can use the tutorial below or try this:
1.Download and install Root Explorer on your phone.
2.Put TaskManager.apk on sd card.
3.Open Root Explorer and navigate to sd-card (where did you put TaskManager.apk).Long-press TaskManager.apk and choose move.
4.Navigate to system/app.
5.Mount R/W.
6.Paste it.
7.Long-press TaskManger and choose Permissions ( Change permissions to match all other apps in this folder (rw-r–r–) - first four checkboxes)
8.Mount R/O.
9.Reboot.
I think that' all...
I cant mount /system as r/w on my nexus 10, I have rooted and tried root explorer and es file explorer with no luck.
I mounted it once, and it overwrote all my changes

On Root Explorer did you press the "mount r/w" button at the top?
yeah, I pressed it but it doesn't mount
Do you have superuser installed? If so, open superuser, uncheck root explorer, select forget and restart root explorer and click "allow" when prompted when you try to mount r/w. Let me know if that works.
I do have superuser installed, thanks for the quick reply but its still not letting me mount system
Is superuser giving permissions to Root Explorer?
If it is, all I can suggest at this point is to try and restart the device and try again or re-flash stock and root your phone and try again.
If anyone else knows something I don't then I'm sure they'll chime in soon.
Good luck!
Thanks for the help but its still wont let me mount i re-flash stock and root again still no dice
you need to actually answer their questions instead of just saying thanks
what does it say in superuser? the permission for root exploer
try ES file explorer, and choose mount in there
Superuser is giving permission to root explorer, it says access grant if you need me to be specific, I have already tried ES file explorer, terminal and many of the mount apps in the market place none of which are working
Try updating the SU binary in SuperSU or SuperUser whichever one you have installed. 4.2 requires a new binary to work properly.
how do i update the SU binary in SuperSU
Hi,
First of all let me say thanks to whoever first rooted the NST. It simply rocks. Also, XDA's introductory video made me laugh and scared at the same time.
I'm trying to install an apk which is not available through Google Play/Android Market. I go to the .apk in ES File Explorer, but it won't install. It says
'Install blocked
'For security, your phone is set to block installation of applications not sourced in Android Market'
In Nook Color Tools, 'Allow non-market apps' is checked. I note that below, it says
'For this to work, the apps apk files must be copied to system/app'.
However, I cannot persuade ES File Explorer to copy the .apk file to /system/app, which I assume is protected or something.
So, I'm stuck. How do I get this little terror to install?!
Many thanks.

On the device is an app called NookColor Tools. Run it, and ensure that the checkbox for on-device install is checked. If it's already checked, uncheck and re-check it to make sure that it's actually set. Exit the app and reboot your nook. You should now be able to sideload apps.

To copy files to the system partition you need to mount it read/write mode. In your ES file explorer there should be an option that allows you to do that "mount root" or something similar. You can also use Rhytm file manager (i use it therefore i know you can do this in RFM).
If you have adb access you can also connect to NST (adb shell) and run
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblk0p5 /system
http://nookdevs.com/Nook_Simple_Touch_write_enable_the_system_directory
5 seconds in web search engine
query : "install non market applications nook"
dude...
You only have to put things in /system/app if you don't want to "install" them.
Most apps go in /data/app which is easier anyway and no hassle when you want to upgrade.
I always install apps over ADB using "adb install myapp.apk"
(especially when I am developing and doing 20 installs an hour.)

Thanks .
I did try a lot of search strings, but not that specific one. I guess I didn't want forum people to get cross with me! Oh well...

I had the same problem for an hour or two. However, ES File Explorer allows you to mount the system partition in read/write mode. Run ES File Explorer, click on the icon near the top LHS corner, choose Root Explorer from the menu, and choose Mount R/W from the pop-up menu. I needed to add and delete system files.
