is not updating bad ? - Epic 4G General

on epic #2 i did the recent update but on 3, & sadly now 4 i have not initiated update nor do i want to ... can this have negative effects in phones normal function ?

So far so good for me. But the only way to stop the update nag screen from coming back every 15 min is to delete the system updater process.

can u tell me how ? that message is quite annoying

The kernel on the dio7 update is superior too the dg27 kernel. I reccomend updating. Also if u update u can still get root using the oneclick and the update itself does not break root.

You have to be rooted to do it. The best method IMO is to use the SDX Stock App Remover. It will allow you to back up whatever you remove so it can be easily restored later if needed. Open the SDX System App remover, and hit Manage System Apps. Next scroll down till you find SystemUpdater.apk. Back it up and remove it. That's it.
I believe the download link for it has been posted here on xda as wall as on SDX.

All I can say on epic #2 the update fixed nothing that was broken prior, and as a bonus absolutely destroyed my phone's ability to adjust screen brightmess appropriately. all whites became yellowed....
Epic #3 is sans update and performing well so far. Epics crossed.

DO NOT USE LCD DENSITY CHANGER on EPIC 4G

So after rooting I thought I would try an app that I used on the EVO and has been used on the Captivate called LCD DENSITY CHANGER 3.0. It worked great on those two devices
MUST have ROOT to use! And when you use it with EPIC 4G it will restart your screen to a lovely black screen. Buttons light up and Notification Lights up as well but the screen will stay black. Until Full ROOT with Custom Recovery stay away until fixed
You couldn't factory reset it with recovery?
There's a fix for that in the thread...

I have tried that as well before I ended up returning the Phone for an exchange. I have used the APP on a lot of different phones too first time this has happened too. But now I know, shame though since that app rocks
Man, I feel sorry that my app give you all this trouble! Really. It's a hell of a job to make this app safe for every device, rom and root configuration...
Please can you give more insight in what went wrong? Did the boot manager not caused a restart with the old density setting when you got the black screen??
Did you rebooted it yourself directly after getting the black screen or did you wait for a while? (The device will reboot itself after 30 sec. when the user can't give any input )
And what is that about the partial root?
I hope you can give some feedback, because really.... I want this thing to be safe. Thanks.
After setting it to 200 it restarted automatically. When it tried to reboot it loads a black screen with sound bottom buttons light up but the device doesn't respond. I did let it sit the first time because I have tried this on the evo so I knew it would try to auto load the default 240. But nothing. Had to pull battery. After 20 - 30 min later I entered recovery and wiped data and cache but same thing happened when it booted back up.
I really do hope this gets fixed soon. It was one of those apps that I paid for that was worth it!

Thanks for your observations. I have contacted LeshaK and he gave me some great advices. I will look into this, because I really don't want to get users into trouble by trying the app out. On the other side, maybe Epic users have to wait for a full root.

wicked! wish this was out yest morning but considering the phone just came out great progress
The easiest way to fix this was to simply pull the build.prop file from /system
Open the file in notepad and find the pixel density value.
Set it to 240 or 234 if you want to be accurate. It looks best at 240 though.
this app just messed up my phone....i installed in GT-I5801 and still there is no solution i can't even exchange like he did....the same problem black screen wit no effects...what is the easiest way 2 get rid of this bootin' thing.. and it not even changing to normal...and no carrier signals...help me out!!

After I rooted my SF I noticed that whenever i go to Settings and go into About Phone and check for System Updates I get this error
Sorry! The application settings (processcom.android.settings) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again. Force Close
is this something i should be worried about? At first i thought maybe it was because i had a custom rom or maybe a kernel but i have tried several rom and kernel combos just to be sure but i keep getting the same error. The rest of the phone has been working fine. I am currently using Superdark rom and stupidfast kernel.
This is my first Android phone so i am still learning. Thanks.

GPS and Gingerbread

I'm currently on my third Epic and thought I finally got one that wouldn't give me issues (The first kept locking up, the second didn't have a working proximity sensor) but the third turned out to have some crazy GPS issues.
GPS would randomly turn off and say it was trying to connect and stay that way. Even in crystal clear skys when not moving, the GPS would just not work. Sometimes it would work only to lose connection a few minutes later.
I took it into the Sprint store and the only thing they could do for me was just flash the phone back to 2.2.
Is this purely the Gingerbread update not working (when it comes to GPS) or have other people experienced no problems with GPS on stock gingerbread?
Basically I'm debating whether I should call customer service and complain until I get a new one, try the gingerbread update again and hope it works this time, or root and hope the GPS works as well.
Any help is well appreciated.

The GPS is very wonky on the ei22 update... I would root and flash a different rom. All of the roms have the gps fix... if you would like to stay stock there is a gps fix floating around somewhere that you can flash over stock rooted ei22

No need if you have root permissions go into es file manager ( if you have it if not get it) go into your favorites and open the / or the phone icon go to the system file then find the vendor file then go to the bin file and hold the gpsd file there and go into its properties and check this:

It's a legitimate request I've seen before. I mean, why let your old devices just waste away when your children or family members could totally use them as dirt cheap replacements for iPods and such. You don't want them making accidental emergency calls or circumventing the settings you put in place.
Should be able to completely remove the radio somehow so that the cellular stuff just won't work.

Maybe this is a project for some of the budding devs on xda. In theory, it sounds like a simple change. Simply remove the phone aspects of a rom and repackage. I'm sure it's harder than it sounds in terms of stability and usability though (I'm not a dev) =/

Eh, some apps certainly wouldn't work, anything that needs to communicate through telephony and such. But really shouldn't be that difficult.
I'll come back when I'm not too terribly busy with some links about breaking down and customizing ROMs and such. I know that I've found a thread specifically for this kind of thing for another device, but there are a few of them I read up on so it may take a while to locate. Hell, you could just about remove the phone and contacts apps and edit your build.prop and leave an existing ROM intact. I'm no dev or anything though lol so I'll look around.

Not the OG article I had read, but after a bit of Googling I came up with a script that you should be able to set to run at boot which will disable your radio.
You may also be able to dial *#*#INFO#*#* and choose turn off radio, but that will not be persistent across reboots. I would use the script and a third-party launcher that can hide apps so that you'll keep the phone and contacts apps and such for stability, but not have them readily available.
*EDIT:
And a flashable zip! Thank you jellybellys!
**EDIT:
Just to elaborate about that flashable zip, it will actually "permanently" (until you wipe and install another ROM) disable the radio and clean out the apps that you don't want. Also installs some kind of binaries if they're currently absent from the ROM. Great find, I'm glad you asked about this!
exactly, my first thought would be just to use titanium backup and disable/freeze but not remove apps such as dialer or what you dont want/need. not sure if this will work but its worth a try. probably a few treads across xda on this (especially on older model phones) id search in those and see if there is a quick answer short of developing a whole new rom

I'll try it out on my phone, see if I can't replicate the issue and speak with the dev. Exactly what MIUI build are you on?

So that's the MIUI.us "Pure English?" I've just downloaded the last available build and will soon flash and then install jellybellys's zip. I'm hoping that will get me the same FC's as you are.
Once you've gotten home after the weekend, try rebooting it a time or two and see if it consistently gives you the FC's.
Also, just curious, but are you using MIUI just because it's the most similar Android overlay to iOS? To make it a bit easier for your friend? Because you could hook him up with some ICS goodness otherwise
*EDIT:
Ok, looking through his updater-script vs. my /system/app/ directory, it looks like MIUI names a couple of apk's differently. I'm currently installing a fresh MIUI so that I can see the directory before moddified by the OG jellybellys zip, then I'll update his zip to reflect those different names and try to run it again. If successful, I'll post the modified file and hopefully we can get your friend a fun little multi-tasking media player
Ok sweet umm can u send me the edit zip
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using Tapatalk 2
Had a good look at the flashable zip, very simple. I need to learn to code, I guess this is a good small place to start lol
All I did was unzip his file, change a few things and added a couple extra lines to remove one more app he hadn't worried with. As said above this will disable your radio, install the radiooptions binary if absent, and remove a number of apk's from the /system/app/ directory.
Removed apps:
TelephonyProvider.apk - cellular service
TelocationProvider.apk - emergency location service (I just don't see the need if you're not connecting to cellular networks)
Phone.apk - your phone app - should also get rid of dialer, I'm trying to find out why it doesn't.
Mms.apk - messaging app
All credit to jellybellys @ rootzwiki.com of course, I couldn't have written this myself or anything.
jellybellys-mod-wifionly-MIUI
Again, the phone app will still be on the homescreen and you actually can't remove it. It won't dial anything, and will just cause the acore process to FC if you try. It's looking like the only way to get it really removed is to modify the ROM's zip so that it never installs the app to begin with.
I'm going to restore the apps again, see if Titanium Backup can't do a better job than outright removing the app does.

I don't know if you have read the tons of suggestions to reduce or get rid of the "lag", but here it's a summary:
1-) Activate Developers options and then set to off all the animations options
2-) Freeze/Disable the AT&T and/or Samsung Bloatware
3-) Remove the option to activate the S Voice by double clicking the Home Button, go to options on S Voice and you will see it there.
4-) If you have the Default Weather Widget, get rid of it or at least set the options to not update all the time.
5-) if you have downloaded Swiftkey, people seem to have issues with it and Weather widget combined. try using Swype (already on your phone) or Google Keyboard that was updated on the Playstore and now most can have it for free.
Maybe there are a couple of other suggestions, but the last ones, 4 and 5, seem to have affected the most. I haven't had any lag but can't say that there is no lag, as there are a lot of people that seem to have it, so it seems that it maybe some productions issues if that's the case, that is affecting some, while others don;t have it.
Custom roms would be the only way to limit the lag, as most of the devs have pretty much put a stop to it. If you stay stock you will have to wait a LONG time until they release their slow ass updates.
I am running WanamLite with NO lag so far. The above post is about all your going to get running stock.
